    Imagine calling someone an underachiever if he has Hakeem's career, especially when we know Broussard is old enough to have watched Olajuwon' from the beginning and seen how devastating a player he was. As a Spurs fan if Wemby can be Hakeem and put a couple of banners in the AT&T Center while being a top 5-10 player alltime I'd be beyond thrilled. I don't know how anyone can underrate Hakeem after the way he put the Rockets on his back in 1994 to carry a team with no other stars to a title in 94. Only other carry jobs I have seen like that are Duncan in 03 and Dirk in 11.

    The weight on his shoulders must be enormous just of the expectations the media put on him. I wish him all the luck in the world but realistically he didn't really play in a hard league, he has 10ish euroleague games averaging 6.5 ppg and 4 rpg, he was't really put against the best amd that one year he was, he didn't really show much (he was like 18 at the time so there's one of rhe reasons) but comparing him to Luka who was euroleague mvp when he was about Victor's age is like comparing formula one to carting. Give him time and let him develop, hopefully he'll avoid injuries but due to his height I highly doubt he'll be able to achieve that. Best of luck.

      Then again there is Kareem who was 7'2" barefoot and he played 20 years back in an era where stars regularly retired in their early 30s because he meticulously kept himself in shape. The fact Durant was able to come back a top 3 player in the league from a stress fracture in his foot gives me reason to be optimistic. This isn't 1978 when the Blazers were injecting Walton with cortisone and telling him to play through a stress fracture. And this isn't the Yao situation where he was practically property of the Chinese national team and expected to play on a stress fracture in the Beijing Olympics since as far as China was concerned, that was the pinnacle of his career and the whole reason they'd been investing in him for years. Which of course ruined his career the same way it did Walton's being made to play through a serious injury like that.

    • @tribalypredisposed
      @tribalypredisposed Рік тому +1

      The best physical comp is Ralph Sampson who started out playing amazing and then got injured and went downhill from there. But that is a long time ago, sports medicine and everything about keeping players from getting injured is way advanced from then. Also, he is going to the Spurs where Popovich has gotten great long mostly healthy careers from the prior two seven foot or taller centers who got drafted first and are now in the HOF. On top of that, Wemby will be playing PF and he will not be banging in the paint with big centers all game long. His ability to guard 1-5 means he will be out on the perimeter a lot giving guards and forwards actual nightmares after they try to shoot over him or drive past him for thirty minutes of their lives.

    • @Irfanhill
      @Irfanhill Рік тому +4

    • @pcollins527
      @pcollins527 Рік тому

      @@Irfanhill we’ve seen it more then 5 or 6 times. And being 7’4 being as mobile and quick is not a positive. It will put more stress in his body causing more injuries. Majority of 7 footers don’t have a long career and with his movement from what we’ve seen in all levels of basketball from the past he will most likely have foot injuries hindering his career and potential. He is a hell of a potential however just look at the thunder with poku and chet similar builds similar play style both were hurt last year, that’s only recent I can go back a little further in history if you would like.

    That Olajuwon quote is completely terrible. If your expectations are that high you are an idiot. Hakeem is one of the best players in NBA history and the most skilled big of all-time. He was drafted ahead of Micheal Jordan, the best player ever, and no one thinks it was a bad decision. That is how incredible Hakeem Olajuwon was.
    If Wembanyama is anywhere close to Hakeem his career will be phenomenal.

    No one is going to talk about the obvious issues obsessing over his mid range? How do you think that opens the inside if he stays busy shooting these beautiful jumpers you’re swooning over? And why do we pretend at the big man level, being thin isn’t an issue in the nba? It works for some forwards. But which big man? Shawn bradley was strong as hell. Don’t even say Yao. Kareem? No way . Idk why ppl think he was lanky. Even Lou Alcindor days he was beefy. Don’t you dare say Wilt. It’s not even simply CAN he put on mass. Sure he can. But he’s uniquely tall. Given his natural frame (unlike bradley for instance), it’s how it’ll hold onto his frame… a frame that has some mileage.
    Which brings me neatly to the next point. While I do find the comparison to the dream interesting, there’s a tremendous difference: Wemby has been playing much, much longer. Since he was 10. Would you like to guess the statistics of injury on a player of his frame who also had a robust amateur career? Especially in todays mobile fast paced game? Hakeem didn’t even know what basketball was until college lol he was training with Moses to get in shape. I wish the best for the guy. I just don’t know why everyone doesn’t see that the stats are such that you’re building him up far too much before we even understand durability. An area that is not in his favor. And his talents on paper are game changing but his deficiencies come at the direct expense of his positive parts of his bag eg his size. They’ll have to play bigger bc he’s simply not going to be able to get boards atleast early on as you’d expect the tallest player on the court to. Which affects their pace, their perimeter defending, their second chance shooting. Not to mention how having the tallest guy taking mid range shots as mentioned previously . Unless he’s shooting 60% from the field, the spurs better be able to shoot rhe 3 ball bc every lane will be congested as he’ll be mitigated if he stays low but if he pops out like a wing as he’ll surely do, his defender can slag off and play significantly more help side. Now if he can shoot like Dirk, okay we’ll talk. But there’s no evidence to support that on the slightest and it’s irresponsible to say he’s as talented as Dirk before he’s played a single possession in the nba.

      Doing stats about a dozen of 7.2 + players is meaningless. If you want good stats, you need a large sample : that's Gauss-Poisson Law in statistics. Anyway most of them were hardly injured (knees, ankles, feet) precisely because they were much more heavy. Sure he will have injuries but not necessarily more than an average NBA player unless he bulks too much.

    you have to understand about injuries though, is that Wemby is not injury prone whatsoever. Obviously his frame is supposed to be an injury machine, but Wemby has been training that as a priority for years to make sure he is durable and stays injury free and so far, it's worked pretty well. Of course there's no guarantees that that will be the same in the NBA, but as of right now, I'm not too concerned about that.

The truth is he is more skilled than 90% of NBA bigs, but on offense he was never that efficent everybody just saw the highlight reels, with this frame he has no shot becoming a superstar, but he can work on that.
