  • Benjamin Moore Aura has been my favorite paint to use for a while now, so I was interested to find out that they had reformulated the product. It's pretty awesome what they came up with because it seems that some of the slight issues people had with the previous version had been rectified. But that was my opinion. I wanted to talk to some professional contractors to see what they thought of new Aura!

My stir stick stood straight up and didn't budge in the can, its that thick. Its working time seems better than it used to be. I still love my Regal tho and happy to work with the new Aura.

Now that I’ve seen Benjamin Moore Aura painted and this close to it, I really like how the colors through Aura come through in the sense of sheen and even how quick it starts drying. I can see gleams of bounced light that help the colors in Aura enhance not just the walls it’s on but throughout the whole room. Now I see how and where Benjamin Moore got the name, Aura for this new paint of their’s.
It helps enhance and broaden the color spectrum and the whole room…in an aura of its own.
I wonder what a Benjamin Moore Aura…taupe color would look like now that I’ve seen this video.

Excellent vid. Watching the paint being applied, I could almost feel how easy it was to get good coverage. Thanks for this.

I’ve been painting now for 13 years and have always just used Regal. The prior Aura to me wasn’t worth the upgrade price. However recently tried new formula and will agree a lot better……

Aura Matte - my favorite. I won't buy anything else! Great coverage. Doesn't smell. Gorgeous sheen.

That was a fun vloggy approach to video, James!
That house looked more like a museum with the big stairs.
Or something from a James Bond movie. I imagine.
I've not seen one before but I image a dramatic scene on those stairs.

I'm a painter, I paint everything. They call me one-coat Willy. I used Aura on my car the other day, used a roller, a brush, came out beautiful.

From the mouths of contractors…. GREAT idea for a video, James - hope more remote shoots are in the works! Have chosen Aura on a number of occasions. I did try Regal once; preferred Aura’s application experience. How does new Aura compare to Behr application- and coverage-wise?

Need to try the new formulation. Always needed BM extender in the past. What is the recommended roller cover (besides the BM Aura brand) for minimal stipple?

the real test is painting OC-65 on a dark wall 😈 3 coats minimum, even with Aura. It's so clear in the can.

Curious if I finished the can of paint of regal then did the rest of the room in Aura (same color of course) would you be able to tell the difference once it dried?

Regal is fantastic. the new aura is great. they redesigned it because it dried too quickly. They made it a low VOC paint again to help with spread of the coating.

About to paint the walls of a stairway (in a house). Conflicted about whether to use Aura (matte) or Scuff-X (matte). I enjoyed your recent Scuff-X video. It seemed like you were advising against using Scuff-X on residential walls. But the stairway walls are prone to getting dinged. Hence my conflict. Which paint do you think is easier to roll (asking as an advanced beginner). Thanks!!

    • @jesusgonzales1045

i would use scuff-x matte, i painted my stairway with it and let me tell you that stuff is amazing holds up, that matte really holds up , it is ideal for those areas no matter residential or commercial. I sell it to a lot of my customers that are homeowners.

Pro painter here, Aura is hot garbage, last time it was any good was back in 2019. Now this stuff weeps from the cut ins and you have to wait until the cut ins are completely dry before rolling the first coat. I’ve always used regal select and praised aura but now, Ben is a better line than the $100+ per gallon Aura garbage. If your a pro you know, time is money and you don’t want to wait around and watch the paint dry.

Professional painter here, with 10 years in the business- though I feel the formula is improved, I still do not feel like this is a user friendly product, especially at higher sheens. Wouldn't recommend for a novice, and it certainly isn't the right choice in every scenario.

Smells different and handles different, covers about the same, dries slower. Was a great product so WHY CHANGE IT? It was likely changed because certain raw materials are not readily available.
