Really enjoyed the "Natter" again. Apologies for the long post. I agree with Sarah that if I was chosen to go on the programme (which I wouldn't be as I won't apply!), I would go back through the whole of the series from day one and note things I hadn't done before, like fly zips, then practice them. There are other techniques as well such as different seams, pockets, setting in sleeves properly, invisable zips, different collars and the list can go on. I don't expect them to be perfect but at least I would have some idea how to do them. The other thing I would do is with the transformation challenges, is sit down for 5 minutes at the beginning of each one and think what I could possibly do. That way my brain, which at 73 is not so quick as it used to be, would get some idea of what I could do. I know all the materials are different, but I think it would help with creativity. Also practice the fitting challenge - they have thought what they will do and even if it is not the same fabric, at least it would throw up areas where difficulties would arise. Listen to what the judges want (as long as it is said in front of the contestants). On that point, I feel that it seems like personnel taste is coming into the judging which it shouldn't. I agree with Alistair as well about the demonstration model of the pattern challenge. I have noticed in other series how bad some of them were sewed and fitted but I thought it was just me. Apologies again for the long post!!
I have just started watching Series 4 again and one of the contestants has just said "cutting on the bias was on the list". So they must be given some ideas of what may crop up. Interesting!!
Hi Kim, Alistair and Sarah lovely to see you. Great critiques for this weeks Sewing Bee and I agreed with so many of your opinions. I really feel sad for the contestants and I know we agree every week that they don’t get enough time, they must feel so desperate that they can’t complete the challenge so we are not seeing the wow factor. I plead with Sewing Bee to sort this out. Transformation challenge, it broke my heart to see brand new calico wasted, I would love more calico in my stash and treasure it. Most of these transformations are unwearable and will end up in landfill, but well done Luke. I was so glad you reminded me about hammering beads as I once made a cushion using a sari and the beads were a nightmare, I’m about to do another beaded project and I’m looking forward to make it this time. Thank you all so much: From Di 😊
Another interesting talk this week. Sarah looks so well . I feel the sewers are struggling to finish the garment in this series.
Well I’ve just dropped on to your UA-cam channel and I think it’s wonderful .. so much advice and you’re all so enthusiastic .. love it 🥰… I am in agreement with you regarding the amount of time given for the contestants… not everyone can design also ..it really should be more about the sewing skills ..design and everything else comes as you go through your sewing experiences and each person is interested in different avenues to go down … 😁… Looking forward to your next videos…😜🥰😁🤗🦋
Totally agree with Alistair about the technical challenge, they all should have the same fabric. That way they can be judged equally on their technical skills. Also Sarah’s comment about brushing up on skills before the series starts, I’ve thought this from episode one.
I’m starting to loose interest in the sewing Bee. Although saying that it was nice to have a new judge this week.
I think Patrick and Esme do have favourites and don’t necessarily judge garments on technical skills but also what they do and don’t like ie colours, embellishments etc.
Loving all the hints and tips from Alistair, Kim and guests. Keep up the great sewing bee natter
Thanks for all the info on dart construction Alistair. Love your discussions learn so much x
Thank you for clarifying the dart situation I really thought I had been doing my darts wrong. I really think at the end of each programme there should be a footnote giving the correct procedure as not everyone is tuned into your discussion. I am sure there are some sewers will try to follow what is seen on the programme. Keep up the great work and explanations
Loved the Indian theme
Totally agree with Alistair about the button placement, common sense to me. Also thought Suzie should have gone home this week.
The winners dress needed a good press, it looked it hadn’t seen an iron
I used to buy used scarves en mass and make a butterfly sleeve top that tied under the bust. Sold quite a few in my hippy days
Most interesting as always to hear all your thoughts about the show. I do think Patrick's and Esme's bias at times is quite unprofessional so having an extra judge was a good idea.
Thanks for the tips as always. I also thought Suzi would go this week.
For me this was a disappointing week. I love Indian fabric and design and was hoping for lots of lovely garments. Instead the timings were so short that not much was even finished. I liked Alistair's point about needing to be less precious and more creative even with lovely fabrics.
Am not going to comment on the transformation challenge as it's not worth the effort, except to say that the winning garment was quite nice.
That was my thought as well. Beatles jacket. Sarah you are lovely and you have made such an amazing recovery.
thank you. That is very kind of you to say so.
Lovely to catch up on the Sewing Bee review again. As usual, great insight and useful tips from the experts. Maybe you should invite Patrick and Esme to join you for an episode!
Thank you all for another great week of feedback and tips xx
I'm enjoying the natter here on these episodes more than the actual program, thank you Kim and Alistair, you are an encyclopedia of knowledge on all of the techniques. I really look forward to all of the guests and their input on the show, great to see Sarah.
Hello Kim, Alistair and Sarah. How lovely to hear my name mentioned as a prize winner this morning. Made my eyes leak 🥹. I couldn’t find a way to contact you Kim so have emailed House of Alistair. Fingers crossed that we can get in touch. Thank you so much. Jan
I’m feeling really sorry for the contestants this series. The focus appears to be more about speed, rather than having the opportunity to show off their sewing skills. I’m still waiting for the ‘Wow’ factor in their makes.
So true Alistair. The sample was not good and I could just hear you saying it as soon as I saw it 😅
Me too lol
Loved Alistair explanation for welt pockets. I really felt for the contestants
Love Sarah❤ great show
Anyone contemplating applying for the sewing bee - never mind reading the series books or binge watching episodes.... tune in here. Honestly, I learn something new every time - love it ❤
Another excellent review of last week's programme. Thank you all for your construction and sewing tips. So lovely to see you looking so well Sarah. What an amazing recovery you have made.
The challenges for children's week sound bizarre.
Love Alistair, he’s so knowledgeable and this program is such a good educational tool. Thanks x
I liked Luke's dress
Thankyou Alistair: runs off to practice welt pockets ❤
I really appreciate the technical discussion about the neckline and collar of the jacket, and the welt pockets. Thank you!
Absolutely Alistair - seemed like the sari's were used as scarves...
I love this chat and I agree with all the points made with the exception of the suggestion that they should all start off with the same fabric. Successful garments depend first and foremost on an appropriate choice of fabric and the contestants should be able to identify what will work well and what won’t, or even which fabric will make their task more difficult.
I agree. Pairing pattern and fabric is a skill.
When it comes to buttonholes not all machines are equal. I’ve got several sewing machines and all perform differently. Also success depends on the type of fabric and whether you need further accessories eg a buttonhole plate which helps with thicker fabric or apply interfacing on finer fabric to give it structure. But I agree with Sarah that contestants need to have practiced certain skills before coming on the show. I enjoy your chats.
Buttons - that's what I did when I tweaked my shop brought coat
This week I feel is the first time design, sewing, and wearing the garment has ALL played a part. It's restored my enthusiasm
I’m enjoying the program and the bonus of this natter too
In the transformation challenge, the only garment that wouldn't be ridiculed if it was worn on the street was Marcus's (maybe Sascha's at a pinch). However, I think that's what the judges, especially Esme, are looking for, the whackier the better. You'll never make me believe all the hacked-to-bits garments don't end up in landfill, let alone all the badly executed pattern challenge and made-to-measures.
That was a beautiful jacket always looks stylish no matter who is wearing it ❤❤❤
I agree that the pattern challenge should start with an even playing field, all need the same fabric so the sewing is the focus not the fabric itself also easier to see mistakes when comparing the garments. Loving the show and lovely to see Sarah.
I agree too that this week was a little better. Let's hope it continues! Thank you all for your advice. I was starting to doubt myself watching the methods some of the contestants use. I have your pressing mat, Alistair, it is definitely a game changer.
More great tips thank all, felt this weeks GBSB episode the best so far
Heard the voice... Beads....
I'm not able to watch GBSB as I'm located in Sydney so I enjoy your discuss very much. I really like learning about the technical parts of the sewing. Excellent viewing.
Great GBSB natter folks. It’s going great this year.
Double ended darts are easier than Princess seams
Being a complete beginner to dressmaking, I've got no concept of how challenging the projects are for experienced sewers. Do you think the challenges this series are more difficult than in previous years? This year there seems to be more contestants struggling or not even finshing. Are the tasks expecting far too much in the time available, because these people obviously know how to make lovely clothes as they are often wearing them on the show.
Lovely thing to give away!!!
Interesting to find out the history of the fabrics
Just got a new sewing machine - buttonholes on machines have always been beyond my capacity, and always did by hand
Listening to your discussions, inspires me to start making my own cloths. Although, its daunting thinking of where to start 😬 xxx
I knew there was something wrong with that grey dress but couldn't put my finger on it
Nice point Ms Payne
I worked with a white sari, white lining for a skirt that I combined with purple crushed velvet, for an evening dress...I think it worked ok, for my first evening dress
Oh no, just realised I have not watched last nights yet, ooops, better catch you later. Much love xx
Last challenge was so difficult and a bit unclear. And yes, Kim, you're right. Not nearly enough time.
Lauren - obviously not paid attention... sometimes you can bend rules but the Nehru is a staple for tailoring
Everyone can get ❤❤❤😊
I would love a pressing mat
As shown by Lauren, I think the contestants are just let loose on the fabrics, no giidance...
I'd always called it a mandarin collar...
I think Ailsa needs one of your pressing mats 😂 Marcia
Hi guys xx
So many contestants have had trouble stitching buttonholes that I am starting to wonder whether these particular sewing machines can actually make consistently good buttonholes. I would hope stitching buttonholes would have been a basic skill that they had all practised before going on the show. I know workers should not blame their tools, but when different contestants have trouble with buttonholes each week, the common denominator is the sewing machine.
I agree. I thought the same during the first episode. So many people's machines didn't want to make them (it seemed).
I have a janome machine and it seems to only do perfect buttonholes every so often, (and this will always be my practice version!)😊
Someone on another forum pointed out the poor performance of Janome machines where buttonholes are concerned and it's Janome machines they use on the sewing bee, I think. I always interface both sides of the buttunhole.
Continuing the debate regarding buttonholes, I think the contestants should go back to basics as described by Alastair. I noticed how badly the Nehru jacket had been finished. It also needed a good press. Although I like Patrick, I do wonder how much real practical experience he has. The programme is certainly slanted towards design. I think Alastair should be nominated as an extra judge and get rid of the comedian 😊
I have a fairly standard Janome and it's very reliable on buttonholes. It can struggle if there are a lot of uneven layers, but it's pretty rare.
Loving the helpful tips and tricks. I have always tied off my darts but didn't know to press before I tied them. What's your view on understitching? Press before or not?😊
When's Alistair releasing his video course in 'how to sew '?
Welt pockets scare me
That's Esme, or at least how she's portrayed
Stuck in again. I can't see a winner here, though one of them will. There are still too many errors and unfinished bits to see anyone riding above the rest.
Welt pockets - thank you, but still scare me...
Doesn't the pattern have fabric suggestions on it like other patterns do?🤔
Heard Kim's voice all the way through - interfacing..... Stabiliser.....
I think it’s sad that the time given is so short for some of the difficult challenges. I know it’s a competition but it really is just becoming a race, not the show it started out as. They shouldn’t be making to impress Esme either! It’s their garment , and not what Esme prefers.

I am a bit underwhelmed with this series, to be honest. I am currently watching all the old series on iplayer and some of the skill levels were a little better, I have to say. If I went on, which is not going to happen - it would take me all day to choose the fabric! - I would make sure I had practised all the technical skills, such as invisible zips (which I haven't yet tackled in my 40-odd years of sewing) so that I was more prepared than some of the contestants appear to be. As for the buttonholes, I have heard that Janome machines can be a bit finicky and don't like any slight uneven surface, so I think that is what is causing their problems.
I think when it is a challenge or pattern making they all should have the same fabrics. But that might not be interesting for viewing.
I think we need new judges, hint hint, or a guest that knows something.
I liked having an extra judge this week. I think they should do it more!
I was disappointed with the choice of fabrics/garments for the transformation challenge, it could have been amazing and was simply underwhelming. Alex's nehru jacket was way ahead of all the others and in my opinion should have been garment of the week. The made to measure challenge was a bit of a mess all round due in part to time restraints. I think Suzy should have gone this week as it is a sewing competition and she made a couple of basic mistakes.
This week was better that the challenges were kept to brief. These contestants seem so amateur and their skills plus knowledge of fabrics is so limited consequently the results are poor. I felt the wrong person went this week
