- Metallica started as thrash metal. Then turned more like mid tempo metal. Then whatever St Anger was… But now Metallica incorporates a pretty unexpected sound in their songs.

Also, James was hanging around Pepper Keenan from Corrosion of Conformity & Down a lot on those days. May be some musical influence seeped into his riffs from going to shows etc.
Sludge is closer to doom I’d say, and has a default fuzz sound in it, characteristic of Orange amps.
Funny enough, I actually visualise the fuzzy sound in orangy tones. Wasn’t aware of the amp thing tho.
Sludge is more like of Stoner imo, like Mastodon or Baroness

The Orange amps are just a statement, it's an example of gear fetishism in general. You can get sludgy sounds through loads of different amps (and guitars, effects pedals, microphones, etc).
I think that The Thing That Should Not Be would be a perfect qualifier for the sludge/stoner/doom family of genres. Also considering that James and Kirk don't really use overdrives running into their amps (for rhythm guitars), as the tightness of their pick attack prevents the sound from getting muddy on those Mesa amps. Love those later album tones, thanks for talking about this!

The tone is definitely a huge element to their lack of tightness. James has progressed to more of a 90's alt metal style (think Creed or Nickelback) rounded guitar sound rather than the laser precision scooped sound he used to have (which emphasized the pick attack and palm mutes). The boosted mids plus greatly decreased gain make the riffs sound squishier and more hard rock than metal

For real! No matter how far away they stray from their roots, it still sounds like Metallica. Even without recognising James’s voice, the instrumentation always sounds just like them.

I hear a lot of Kyuss influence in the Load/Reload era and beyond: the last solo on Outlaw Torn plays similarly to 'Caterpillar March', Bad Seed's riff mirrors 'Big Bikes' ... and heck, I did a double take on the vocals on Slither the first time. Felt very John Garcia. The Judas Kiss' chorus riff is Hwy 74. These are fun Easter eggs for me.
I can def help here! Sludge and doom was my gateway into metal. Sludge is def closer to doom and Sabbath-type stuff like others here have mentioned, and a few bands even incorporate noise rock elements like Chat Pile, or post-rock elements like Isis and Neurosis. Ofc, some bands incorporate drone and stoner elements too like Melvins and Boris, some of the 90s bands like Eyehategod had their thrashy moments, and others went real slow and grindy like Toadliquor. One of my favorites now is a band called Spotlights, they combine sludge and shoegaze, which may sound weird but actually are a perfect fit for each other. Overall, I would say sludge bands have a wider array of influences and are more experimental than the groove bands, who tend to stay rooted to thrash.
That sounds crazy cool, I always imagined sludge and shoegaze being the opposite of each other on the tonal Spectrum. To have the most disgusting tones combined with the most clean and beautiful in one band? Going to check them out!
@@Nicholas-Santiago Yeah Spotlights are super sick! Their LP Tidals is really great, the tracks Walls and The Grower are what really opened my eyes to them.
My standpoint of a mix will always be: "Drums are the most important instrument in a metal mix", even as a bassist myself.
They are the driving factor, or sometimes the dragging factor of all genres, they decide the groove, the tempo, the feel of it all
the difference between songs like "sad but true" and "the thing" is mostly the drums, in Sad they are a driving machine, almost like a diesel engine speeding mid tempo along, but in tttsnb they are a dragging force, like a massive steam engine chugging along slow and steady
also if anyone wants some sludge recommendations from a sludgehead:
-Amenra (Post Sludge-Doom)
-Doodseskader (Drum and Bass sludgecore, with hiphop and grunge elements)
-Basically the entire Belgian Sludge/Doom scene
I think what you're describing here would be better labeled as Stoner metal instead of sludge. I get the confusion though, there's a lot of overlap between the genres. To me, sludge is more raw and misanthropic with a clear hardcore punk influence, while stoner is closer to bluesy, Sabbath style riffing and groove.
Stoner metal is basically planet caravan type of songs. It's chilled, looser, easier, more type of feel unlike sludge. Sludge is way darker to me and closer to doom metal
"For Whom The Bell Tolls" is basically one of the prototypes for doom metal. Not the very first proto-doom song, of course; Black Sabbath pretty much invented doom just like they invented everything else in metal. And the Scorpions' "The Zoo" and "Animal Magnetism" would almost be doom metal if not for the lyrics. But among post-Sabbath bands, Metallica was the next innovator of doom.

Also for proto-doom there's countless heavy psych bands out there. My personal pick for first metal/doom metal release would be Randy Holden's Population II.

That slow groove could sound kind of ominous if the Scorps had written some spookier lyrics to accompany it. Same with "Animal Magnetism." Only the lyrical subject matters veers these songs away from being doom metal. But those riffs are so reminiscent of Black Sabbath.

I was aware of bands like Trouble and St. Vitus Dance (if I recall their name right), who were fairly early practitioners of what would eventually be called doom metal. And I do recall hearing doomy elements from early power metal bands like Fates Warning. But I'm surprised there were so many early bands. Although, yeah, I can see where late 60s and early 70s psychedelic rock had an influence, too.

They toured with Corrosion of Conformity on Load. I know James is good friends with Pepper Keenan & likes COC music. I'd say there was definitely an influence back then.
Good call. Great point. Load/Reload was very James and Lars trying to mix COC and Alice In Chains but Metalli-fy it. Maybe Reload moreso, i.e Carpe' Diem Baby, Slither, Bad Seed.
they also toured with kyuss in that era. just by the album covers of load/reload and blues for the red sun you can see some influence. also james has uncredited backing vocals in a COC song i think Man or Ash. you can clearly hear his voice in the chorus
the sound you're referring to could be from james discovering kyuss after the black album tour, kyuss was a big influence on lots of sludge bands
James is also best friends with Pepper Keenan from down and corrosion of conformity. James actually does some vocals on a corrosion of conformity song.

This is why it's worth making a point that songs and riffs are not tied to one genre. People can draw similarities but with as much overlapping there is in techniques in a lot of rock and metal, it's pretty much a matter of familiarity to many.

You could almost say Metallica's mid-tempo songs are like... Bright sludge. That's what I'm going with. Bright sludge. Like Kyuss banged Corrosion of Conformity and they had a hyperactive love-child out of wedlock.
Load and ReLoad- It's definitely a different genre. Sure you could put it as Hard Rock, Grunge, Alternative, Metal, Sludge, whatever. But it always doesn't fit any of these genres. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, and the 'Metallica' sound as well. I haven't heard anything completely like those albums yet, especially songs like King Nothing, The Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Fixxxer, Devil's Dance etc. They're the 'Mid 90s Metallica' genre.
I don't really understand these technical terms. What I do know, is that Metallica have never had a conventional sound that you can pinpoint. Yes, they were labeled as thrash in their early years, but even you see just how many variations they have. They've never sounded like a traditional thrash band like Slayer or Testament, they've always had a more open mind and a wider range of influences. Very, very cool indeed, love them!!
Well in the end, they became the conventional thrash metal band. They drew from nwobhm then moved on to drawing from grunge, stoner, and groove mid discog. With as many thrash metal bands as there are, there are bound to be more open minded bands with a wider range of influences than Metallica at that. Even Nuclear Assault had acoustic passages on some songs early on, even one of the first known uses of blast beats in metal.
Out of all the Thrash bands that I have listened to the only ones that sound even similar are Slayer and Sodom, thrash was always an innovative genre, wth, Watchtower released their debut one year before Master of Puppets came out. Im not saying they were not smart or innovative but you have to give credit to everyone, Metallica was no different from other thrash bands in their trajectory.
Load and Re Load are less tight mainly because you James playing on one side and Kirk playing on the other side.
When you listen to it through headphones it makes more sense. You have Kirk on the right, James on the left, and Jason with Lars in the middle of the mix. It’s like a dance of sorts. I actually love how the stuff from Black Album to S&M are mixed for the most part.

They opened for Metallica at Sofia, Bulgaria in 2008.
I saw them open for 'tallica back in the day. They were a nice warm-up act. I liked what they were doing.
Metallica got me into them and A7X as well!
Im a huge sludge and doom metal fan. I saw Crowbar twice in the past year (first time opening up for Sepultura and the second time headlining). They have to be in my top 5 favorite metal bands ever. I definitely think that they’re the heaviest band ever. I met Kirk Windstein both times, and the second time i met his wife Robin. Super nice people. Love seeing them and Down get mentioned on this channel
I'm a bit late to this but I feel a huge characteristic of sludge is tempo changes, you mentioned the heavy slow parts, but what makes something sludge in my eyes is fast punky/thrashy riffs juxtaposed with those fuzzy slow bits

I feel like Bad Seed was Metallica trying to write a Kyuss style song.
Check out the bands High on Fire and Sleep if you never heard them. Matt Pike is the king of writing sludge riffs.

They do and it's fairly clear to make out the style/direction they took on each album. Genres were an afterthought for some, other's more clear cut. For Metallica, it's always been pretty clear.
There was an old concert flyer that labeled Slayer as "LA's Only Black Metal". As inaccurate as that is, lots of bands mislabel themselves. As time goes by, people probably could see the big picture and draw what style bands were based on the most similarities.
For Sludge Metal, one of my favorite bands is High on Fire. High on Fire has more of a Motorhead flavor when it comes to Sludge.
You know, this thought has occurred to me every now and then. When I learned what sludge metal is, I realised Metallica does it quite a lot. It's quite funny when you think about it. I know what you mean by Metallica sounding 'wider'. But then we've got something like Thingy.... but then, do you think we could pick that up from Kill 'Em All too, or is that a stretch?
I would have been happy with a Reload, Black Album, I Disappear, Presidio Tapes influenced Album instead of St. Anger. Hopefully the new album will be that kind of new open free way. Death Magnetic was a heavy brick, and in Hardwired they recycled their riffs for the first time in their career.
I loved the direction they were going with the Presidio stuff. Shame they kinda backed out and scrapped it, but I understand why they did it.

Listen to the slowed and pitched down version of Creeping Death on UA-cam. It sounds a lot like doom metal. And likewise if you play the riffs in a lot of sludge or doom bands faster, then they sound like thrash songs. So it makes sense that late era Metallica starts sounding kinda like those genres.

Sludge is a bit more doom ridden and muddy. I think we’re looking at more of a stoner blues hard rock with ‘Tallica at times. Heavy and swinging. James has been known to love the likes of Corrosion of Conformity, where its not full trippy stoner metal but is definitely that feel good swang.
Crowbar is the kind of music you have on a workout tape if you're skinny, and you wanna get fat.
This is not a coinsidence, I think I've heard some vibes even from Alice In Chains on later Metallica works. Every time when I hear "the House that Jack Built" I imagine how could it turn out if this piece ever was performed in collaboration with Layne...
All these inter-influences are such a good trick in the whole musical world, the older influence the jounger and vice versa.
The magic of Metallica and, for example, Ghost, is that they sound every time freshy and actual, absorbing the best influences of the musical predecessors (and even successors!) and extending the musical horizon and set their own trend. That is why they will never ever get old.

And James Hatfield is good friends with pepper there's a song called Diablo blvd and it's about the road James lives on.

No need to look further. If you want clear explanation, take a look at the videos from 1995. James was clearly influenced by CoCs record Deliverance and he was in the strong friendship with Pepper Keenan since then, helped CoC get ESP endorsement, took them on tours etc. And what? Next album by CoC, has James guest vocals. So for me mid 90s was, when James wanted to go into similiar direction that CoC went after Blind album...
Hey buddy crowbar came from a lesser known name that was originally a hardcore band named shell shock in the earlier 80s which was followed by after shock then Kirk left formed crowbar metallica nothing to do with their sound they started out playing black Sabbath covers. I'm from louisiana..

Makes sense that Metallica slowed down more drastically after touring with Kyuss. They’ll do that to thrashers.
No matter what anyone says about Metallica I still enjoy any and all new Metallica songs. And I do believe Metallica has started to sound like stoner metal as we used to call it..Kyuss and C.O.C etc. Any way they are sounding great to me. After 40 years they are still rocking. I kind of think their best work is behind them so I take it for what it is and don't analyze every song and riff

With the risk of being reductionist, I hear them the same except groove has explicit or even just implicit 16th note swing and sludge has no swing. As you mentioned there is a lot of blues influence they just each emphasize different aspects.
There are so many different Metallicas. I don't think any are bad, but thrash Metallica will always reign supreme.

The one thing I hate about the metal community is all that senseless need to categorize every note in every song into its own damn genre. Music is, just like the people making them diverse, nobody is just one thing, we are all awesome collections of all the influences we ever experienced and so is the music we create.

metallica definetelly use some sludgy influence but i wouldnt say that they are clearly sludge on some songs. sludge is more THICC and slow, has some misanthropic and kinda end of the world type of lyrics. crowbar/down is a good a example but in the othen hand you have some bands like eyehategod acid bath that they are sludge too. sludge and stoner/doom metal is a vast genre sometimes you cant exactly say that this band is sludge or stoned metal or doom metal etc.

Anyone who knows Metallica knows that Hetfield is/was a massive CoC fan and friends with Pepper Keenan and has been seen multiple times sporting CoC and Down tshirts. Hetfield loves the slow bluesy riffs and itshard to believe that you didnt feature "Bad Seed' in your highlights as its the best example of Metallica at their sludgiest.

Metallica has sucked for a long time
Lars told many times after the black album tour that they moving towards a more « greasy » sound on Load/Reload. They were influenced by blues and classic rock like Deep Purple. They didnt invented this sound at all, COC, Down and many New Orleans bands were playing that kind of music long before Metallica….
As much as I love bands from Louisiana, since we're talking about load/reload, there's also the whole desert/stoner rock scene which originated from Palm Beach, California iirc. Also for any possible grunge influence, which originated from Seattle, Washington.
So a lot of bands from three or so areas have been doing things in similar roots long before Metallica. And we haven't even mentioned the various nwobhm bands they were "influenced" by lol
