Ep 149 | The Pine Marten killed every chicken in the coup | From French Chateau to Farmhouse

- Despite our best efforts to safeguard the chickens in the coup, the cunning Pine Martin manages to hide away before the coup closes at night to then feast on our flock.
Anna and Peter reflect on what to do next to protect their last two hens, luckily away from the coup that night, and if and when to replace the flock with new birds.

We have the loveliest supporters and followers of our UA-cam channel 'It's a Wonderful Life'.
We remain committed to provide our content regularly, and of late, to increase the frequency of our vlogs. We have and continue to receive, many kind requests, to send gifts, or in some way help us financially with our channel.
We have given this a great deal of thought. Whilst 'Patreon' and 'go fund me' are out of the question for us, we feel the 'buy me a coffee platform' (or for us, a cup of tea!) would be a great way to do this, especially in light of its ease of use and non ongoing commitment.
Any contribution towards maintaining and hopefully enhancing our channel is very much appreciated, but never expected.
Only Anna could talk sweetly to an animal that just killed her beloved pets. So heart sick for you both.
I thought as well. Beautiful lady with a kind heart to animals.
Well such a sad day for you both.. we really feel for you .. who would have thought after securing the coup that this would happen.. taking time to reflect is wise . When any pet dies. It's difficult not to want to go and replace it .they leave such a big hole in your heart when they go.. and such a change in your daily routines too . Respecting nature and the
"cruel" circle of life can be so hard.. but our thoughts are with you at this traumatic time ❤❤.take care both xx
I thought exactly the same. I’m sure I couldn’t of been so kind
I’m so glad Annie and Sally survived to give you something to focus on. How devastating to lose them all in one go. Hugs ❤
Anna's gentleness towards the Pine Marten is remarkable. Rarely do we witness such kindness on the streets of UA-cam, as well as Peter's pensive stroll considering how and when to move forward whilst giving Anna time to grieve. Now that's LOVE in action! 💞So glad two of your chickens were housed separately. Wishing you both peace from across the pond in Minnesota. Your Iris are absolutely lovely, by the way! 💜💛💜
Thank you my lady for such kind and generous words 😘
Oh, so, so, sorry. Anna must be devastated. 💜
Heart broken for you both. How kind you both are...
I'm so sorry to hear about the chickens. You two take great care of your animals and I know this is devastating to Anna. Prayers for her and that there will be a balance with all the native animals and your animals.
Peter and Anna, I am so sorry about your chickens. This is heartbreaking. You guys did everything to protect your chickens. Anna, you are a good soul to show kindness to the pine Martin. I hope the geese will be OK. Thank goodness the other two chickens were safe. An older lady in Georgia has problems with snakes. I feel so sad for you both. Big hugs to you both.❤
Oh dear I am so sorry. What an awful thing to discover. Poor Anna. You were so good to those birds and did your very best to keep them safe. A big hug to you both.
So so sorry for the loss for your beloved chickens.
What a horrible thing to happen to those poor chickens. Oh dear Anna - I know your heart is broken. I’m so very, very sorry.
My daughter has her chickens named and I understand how Anna feels.❤❤
Oh my goodness... I am so sorry to hear this sad news. My first reaction was anger at the pine marten and revenge was in my heart. Wishing to get rid of that danger for the sweet innocent chickens. Then I heard Anna's sweet reassuring, loving voice as she spoke to the pine marten and it made me stop in my tracks. How horrible of me to blame an innocent creature for doing exactly what he needs to do to survive. Both of your kind and understanding voices have given me food for thought. Thank you. I am so glad that Annie and Sally are still with you. Bless your hearts.
My reaction too. But when I heard Anna speaking softly to it, I soon realised that it was probably panicked too when it realised it couldn’t get out. It probably has a family too. We have to respect that it was just doing what it needed to survive. Some may call it cunning to sneak in during the day and hide, but it may have not realised that there was no way out. So not as cunning as we think. Heartbreaking none the less. ❤
So very sad to hear about your beautiful chickens. I cried listening to you recount what happened. Virtual hugs for you both. ❤
Oh no. I am so so sorry. How heart breaking. There is no way you could know. Those animals are so cunning. Thankbgoodness you have 2 left.❤❤❤
I am so very sorry for you both. What an awful thing to have happened. The only thoughts I have are that those chickens have had the best possible love and care during their lives. 😢❤
What a dreadful shame! I thoroughly agree with other comments about how kind Anna is to speak so sweetly to the pesky vermin! Could you not get it taken to another location by animal rescuers?
I also agree with you Peter, about the subject of free range. We had guinea pigs that roamed our lawn freely (did you know that they also take themselves to bed at dusk, just like chickens?!!) occasionally we would lose one of them to cats.😪
Unfortunately, as you said, it's a chance we take when giving our friends such a wonderful life! I'm glad you still have Annie and Sally 💜
So sad. Lovely Anna, remember to take some solace from the fact that you gave them a wonderful life xx
Oh, I am so sorry. I can imagine how upset Anna is. They are her babies. Some animals are so smart. Yes, you are right, they at least had a good life not being penned up.
This is so devastating... not enough words to express...hugs to you both
We are so sorry for you both, and of course the chickens
It’s nature I know but it doesn’t make it any less heartbreaking,I am so sorry for you both xxx
So glad Annie and Sally are OK but sad for your other ones😢 really sorry Anna😔
Oh no!! I'm so sorry! You work so hard to keep your feathered friends safe and happy! I trust your care and (emotional) investment will be rewarded. Sending love to you both.
Oh no..that's heartbreaking..You did what you could.
I am so sorry, you are both such loving and caring human it must be so painful, so glad Annie was safe
Poor Anna 😢 I am so sorry, after all your hard work, trying to keep them safe. Love to you both xx
I am speechless...so sorry that you've lost your beloved flock, but thankful that Annie and Sally have survived. I can imagine how devastating this is. I have such huge respect for you both that you understand the pine martens nature and have accepted it as many would definitely not be so kind.
Sending hugs for your losses.
Kindest regards as always Rose H xx🌹
So sorry to hear. You are such animal lovers. ❤
So sorry what for what has happened, you both did your best for them, thank goodness the other two chickens are o.k. Sending you hugs. 🥰
Oh my goodness! Immediately my broken heart went to Anna. I would be immediately be angry! But Peter, you reminded us about the Circle of life. What a cunning little critter. I don’t know anything about them. But seems such a small animal to do so much damage. I hope Anna will be on peace soon enough.
I also watch The Newbys, and they lost many of their chickens not to long ago. But theirs was to some dogs. They were heartbroken as well, as they also allow their chickens to run free on their property.
Horrible horrible situation. Sending love and hugs to Anna. So very sorry to learn about the unexpected loss of your darling feathered family 😢
😞 how awful..so sorry to hear this ..poor chickens
I’m so sorry for your losses. What a disaster. Poor Anna. My chickens were my babies because I had hand reared most of them. We had foxes attack in the night and lost nearly my entire flock. I’m glad that at least 2 were saved.
I followed you both for a long time on your journey - so sad but glad you can be positive about going forward. Hope Anna is ok x
My heart is with you.
So sorry for your loss. Losing any pet is sad. I think if he hadn't been in there already he would not have got in there on his own so I think when you're ready you should get more.
So sorry to hear about your chickens ❤
So sorry to hear about the chickens 😢
Oh no!!! I am so sorry to hear this very sad new....Love to you both.....
Shattered to hear this tragic news! Yes, nature is very clever. Thankful that Annie and Sally survived! I must say, Anna was much kinder than I would have been with that little pine martin. Your chickens have a lovely home at your property and I think that taking a little time to reflect is good after any shock. Anna will know when it is time to try again. Sending hugs from Colorado USA.
I am so very sorry. Many hugs and much love to you all. 💜
I’m so sorry to hear this news. 😞
It really hurts me that your chickens could not be in peace for the calculated ferret.
I know it is difficult to have almost all feathered pets.
Our first 8 chickens were bitten by a dog while they were in a transport box, while my father finished the chicken house - they were replaced, but our grief over the bitten hens was a grief that was difficult to cope with, but later got but we new hens that laid lovely eggs. It's just not easy to make sure!! I send Anna and you the warmest thoughts 🐔🐓🐣
So sorry for your loss

Im so sorry to see that you must be devastated 💔💔sending you both a huge hug
Anna & Peter, very sorry for the loss of most of your flock! Bless you both. ❤
Thank you for the courage it took to make this video. Please take time to heal.
So so sorry 😔
Oh what bad luck and what a cunning animal the Pine Marten is. So sorry for you both.
Oh no, so sorry for you ❤
Oh what a terrible shame. What a cunning little fella he was. Sods law after you had just done your best to secure them😢
How heat breaking, I am so sorry.
I'm so sorry for your loss ❤
Oh that’s so sad. I’m so sorry to hear that 😢
I am so sorry. A similar situation happened to The Newbys they are in Portugal. In their case I believe it was wild dogs. You guys are such lovely people. I know you do everything you can to protect and care for all your wonderful animals.
So sorry, 😢
Thankyou for update, you're always positive Peter & this is life with animals & on land no matter where you are, I've lost 2 horses to bushfires in someone's care, left me heartbroken for years, I've successfully evacuated many times, learnt new techniques & lessons each time for greater ease & less stress. Such wise words, 100% agree your sentiments. I trust you'll find a way Peter & Anna. Take care, until next time, Its always a pleasure to hear from you, keep it real. Jane
So very sorry for your loss,it's so sad for you both hope you manage to keep the other two safe .take care 😢xx
Oh so sorry...those pine martens are clever...
Oh, I'm so sorry...its normal animal nature - Anna knows that "anger or lashing out" isn't whats needed...she's so kind to the "killer" and yet in her sorry she maintained knowing "so is the nature of the beast" and the "cycle of life". Hugs
I admire your understanding and respect for nature. Something that would not come easy for me! 😢
you could NOT have possibly factored in that Anna and Peter, I am so shocked, clearly they are not to be underestimated. The only silver lining is it helps you learn more what's needed for future. I have a horse & that's the only thing we can do is avoid it happening again. Love to you from Sth Oz
You're absolutely right. It's nature, it isn't the "fault" of the pine marten any more than it's your "fault". Still difficult to cope with in the immediate aftermath, but the reality of looking after stock deep in the countryside.
So so true Hugh, very wise words
Ahh so sad for you both xxx
I’m so so so sorry 😢 😢😢🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😇😇😇💗💗💗
So sorry!
Oh No! I'm so very very sorry! Anna must be devastated & to find them also! I am so very very sorry. This is the hardest part of having animal family. Its heart breaking. My love goes to you both as you were working so hard to protect them & keep them safe 💐xo xo
A very philosophical view on nature and you are clearly already reviewing the next steps with your logical mind kudos.
ohhhhh so awful and devastating, my condolences for your feathered family, it's so heartbreaking especially as you had done everything to try and protect them, if you capture the pine marten maybe take it to some woodlands far away from you? so pleased the other two are ok. hugs to you both xx
That’s so sad. It’s live on the farm unfortunately. Condolences to you both.❤
God love you both, so sorry. Nature; both stunningly beautiful and at times a terrific force.
You are both amazingxx
Bless you both ,how sad x
My heart aches for both of you. I would encourage you to get more chickens. Peter, you're so gifted and talented, you could make a really spectacular coop with lots of space, so the chickens wouldn't feel like captives; maybe connect one coop to a big fenced in area with a tunnel. I'm hoping you both won't give up.❤
So sorry to hear.😢 Another channel I follow had their chickens taken out by two stray dogs the other week. So sad when you get so attached to them.
I am sooo sorry to of watched the video. Didn't realise pine martens killed chickens. Xx
Ah sad to hear the news, I had just watched your vlog about securing up the place, a sneaky critter. Glad to know 2 were spared.
So sorry for you guys. I know Anna must be taking it hard.
I’m so sorry, you both must be devastated, sending massive hugs to you both xx
Ask the farmers around for advice. They will help you.🐥🐣🐓
The enemy is always from the inside. 😮
How awful for you both…… I’ve never kept chickens, but you both on film have showed much love for them…. You both must be devastated 😢
Thank God at least Little Orphaned Annie was ok and of course Sally 👏
So sorry to hear this sad news
very sad news today but must be one of the hazards of living in the country there has to be space for all animals to live as they live
got to be strong and move on bless you both
So sorry to hear this.
So so sorry!!
So sorry to hear that sad news. Years ago my mother had 25 chickens and she went to feed them one morning and a fox had killed 17 and she thinks she disturbed him as she heard the commotion as she was nearing their area.
WOW, OH NO, SO SO SAD, BEST WISHES TO YOU
I am so sorry this happened just catching up on videos for some reason not getting notifications. You aren't alone in losses Amy and Marc of Chateau de Rosieres also lost fowl and a turkey due to foxes. Sending hugs to you both to heal we know how much you care for your menagerie. Nature can be cruel sometimes. Taking a time out probably the best and maybe in a bit when you are ready if you are wanting any to prepare your areas and pens for such an event to prevent it from happening again.
Oh my goodness, I am so VERY sorry! 💔
That is so sad, and one of my greatest fears...I too have chickens and ducks and I´m constantly worried about something like that happening. I already lost a sheep, mauled by a big dog and it was traumatising. I send you some love from Portugal.
So sorry for you both ... and the chickens but, nature is nature
Oh goodness, Anna must be heartbroken, I’m so sorry, nature is so cruel at times. Xx
After all that hard work blocking the door. Will watch the vlog later. So sorry. 🍷🍷🇬🇧🇬🇧🐓🐓
Devastated for Anna and yourself take care
So very sad 😢
Oh no, I’m so heartbroken 💔 for you!
😢 I'm soooo sorry you guys ohhhh gosh .
So very sorry
That is very sad news , but unfortunately it is life (or death) on a farmlet . thank goodness for some survivors.
That's such a tough one for you both and Anna is right to take some time to reflect.
You did the right thing in securing the coup but nature finds a way. Take care both and I am sorry for your loss.
