I loved Supertramp - back in the day and still have many albums!! Not until I started to follow Roger Hodgson a few years back, (thanks to the internet, and my kids getting married) did I soon realized all my fav songs are actually written by Roger Hodgson! Listening to this tune LIVE and sung by Roger is unbelieveable! His voice is still amazing!!! I have been to over 23 + concerts over the past few years and I cannot get enough!! Although 3 concerts I had tics for in 2020 - were postphoned until 2021 - I cant hardly wait to see him again!! The horns are now performed by the amazing Michael Ghegan - and again hearing these tunes live are addicting!! I hope you all get to see Roger at least one time in your life! Cheers!! :)
This album is a masterpiece, with all songs being strong, and all being reliably played in concert performances. But you won't find another song that is at the level of School until you reach track 6, Rudy, and then the title track, Crime of the Century. Dreamer was the most commercial and well known of the songs off this album, but School, Rudy, and Crime of the Century are the standouts. Crime of the Century is the masterpiece of the masterpiece album, a song that ends the album with power, gravitas and epic quality.
Listen to the album Indelibly stamped, theres some great tracks on that early album. But pretty much every Supertamp album is great, Crises What Crises is probably my favs and Even In The Quietest Moments is also a stand up album. Breakfast In America, Famous Last Words, Brother Where You Bound without Roger but David Gilmour playing guitar on a few songs. And last Roger's solo albums are brilliant!!!
To me If Everyone Was Listening is the only weak point of this album, all the rest is 99% flawless. This album almost makes me believe in God. Pure creativity, perfect collaboration, right intentions, perfect lyrics, so much care in searching for the perfect sounds... And this album is contributing to making humanity better without teaching a lesson or being arrogant. It comes from the heart, it is benevolent but yet extremely involved.
I am sure Hide in your Shell has saved many lives through the years. First they encourage people to be different, then they make this song to help those who are having difficulties for being different, for thinking too much. What better way to confort them than this song? Perfect for a strong positive cry that will actually gives you strength and make you feel that everything is possible!
Easily the best album ever recorded. The Beatles has Sgt. Pepper, Supertramp had Crime of the Century.

@@darrylcole5575 Their sadly overlooked 1970 debut album "Supertramp" is way better than "Indelibly Stamped" - full of nice and catchy tunes, a gem with signs of great things to come.
It's a heartbreaking song with attempts at redemption, trying to help someone in need of a friend. I gravitated to this in particular as I was a very shy child who overthought many situations. A great song evokes emotion. I always get choked up hearing this even 45 years later. It's not specific to me but I've always envisioned someone trying to talk somewhat out of their depression or perhaps even contemplating suicide.
- This album is a masterclass in song dynamics.
- I call them Prog-Pop.
This album is sheer class from start to finish. I love every song. Breakfast in America was also magnificent, but COTC is their pinnacle IMO.
The next song on the album Asylum is very emotional same with Hide In Your Shell. This is Really good again I listened it again earlier Although the Album is Much darker than all the other SuperTramp albums it’s still Very good. This is 44 minutes of a brilliant masterpiece
I cant wait for The song Rudy which is my favorite song on the album. When i hear 1 song off this i must listen to whole thing because it just works IT JUST WORKS all the way through every song 10/10
I'm 33 and I grew up on Supertramp. I love them, though they're not known for happy songs. Frankly, I'm convinced there's a causal relationship between Supertramp and chronic depression
Just true shear emotion and melancholy in this song! Like most of Roger Hodgson's songs, he writes from the heart with loads of spiritual passion. Huge Supertramp fan here. Justin, I am really digging your channel. Your critiques are thoughtful and informative. Keep it up! If you are liking Supertramp so far, I suggest Babaji and Even in the Quietest Moments from their 1977 of the same name.

This song expressed my personal emotions big time at the age of 15. Not quite understanding the lyrics fully then, but with the way Roger delivered them with the grand music to back him, it landed. English isn't my native language so that's why it took me some years to fully grasp the lyrics. Good and honest reaction Justin. And I get the musical vibe. There are a few (Roger's) songs here where that returns, in one of them quite strongly even. Please continue with this magnificant album. Even In The Quietest Moments is also worth the try!

Omg. Me too and I was the same age. Used to listen to it over & over & over. As well as all Supertramp. One of my favourite bands. Beautiful lyrics and music.
Supertramp was a good pop progrock music band.
In their repertoire, they have many songs that speak to the soul and offer a sustainable lightness of being. Never too complex, just a sweet moment that sounds like summer, like teenage years, like good-natured candor without being syrupy.
I listen to them on a roadtrip !!!
Great tune. Reminds me of "If Everyone Was Listening", later in the LP. Reminds me in the way that both songs fit into the overall album. They used a 3 piece backing vocal section for Hide In Your Shell's chorus sections- at least they did for the "Paris" DVD. A DVD, by the way, very much worth owning !!(if you really dig Supertramp, it's almost silly not to own it !!)
They play almost all of Crime Of the Century on the Paris gig(s)& subsequent DVD release.
My wife & my old neighbor saw them in Philly for several shows in the late '70s. While the band itself was not very animated on stage, soundman Roger Pope seriously brought the goods. Much time was spent on the soundcheck, getting the right balance for any given house they'd played to.
Both of them (wife & old neighbor) agree that Supertramp sounded phenomenal on stage, live. "Better than the albums" was said by both- time well spent ! Roger Pope even got credit on the albums for his live sound mixing duties ! What band does THAT !?!
Besides, concerning how active/entertaining could they be on stage ? Certain songs had Davies, Hodgson & Helliwell ALL playing keyboards simultaneously for parts of certain songs.... And none of them were of the Keith Emerson ilk, either....👊😎

This one is amazing when seen live in concert with the ebb and flow of emotions from Roger. Having the insecurity of being shy especially when I was younger and still at times to this day, I can relate to this song a lot.

My favourite song off a great album. Deep lyrics, great changes of tempo and style, and sung with great emotion. A masterful song.

The first time I ever heard this song was when my older sister's high school jazz choir did an arrangement of it. Great personal memory. Of course, a short time later I heard the original after I started buying Supertramp albums and loved it immediately.
I saw Supertramp twice. First time on their North American tour, doing “Crime of the Century “.. you were right about the theatrical elements of the group. They had a lot of large screen playing movie elements during songs and also had a large number of actors come on stage during a couple of the songs. It was an amazing concert.
Definitely one of my favourite Supertramp songs and, for me, the best one on a great album. The call and response heard in ‘this song is also typical of Supertramp in this period, with John Heliwell providing true falsetto as well as the sax etc. I’m enjoying your response to this album; hope you like the rest of it, and then go on and discover their next album Crisis, What Crisis?

Supertramp is a required taste but when you like them you'll find they're so diverse and just an awesome band; especially live in concert!! Anything from their "Paris" (1979) concert dvd is a must see.
Always loved Supertramp from the first time I heard them. Nearly got to see them back in 76 but that's another story.

School is a hard one to top but after you've finished this album, Crisis what Crisis , and Even In The Quietest Moment it may be just a distant memory. I used to skip this song when listening to this album (but quit doing that years ago) because I couldn't wait for the next one but my patience has grown with age and I actually really enjoy it now. It will be in my head all day now.....🙃

It's one of the songs of my life. The one I don't fail to hear every day. Maybe it's not the most commercial hit, but it's certainly one of Roger Hodgson's excellence, whether it's composition or a lyricist.
Hide in Your Shell, musically has the five usual characteristics in Roger's songs high to the maximum expose: melody, rhythm, tone, harmony and intensity.
At the same time, a letter that touches any of us deeply, and helps to overcome difficult times.
It's powerful song is unshakable.
Whoever hasn't heard it live hasn't seen it and heard anything... superb and brilliant.

Supertramp relit the torch of progressive pop music that the Beatles initiated. Crime to Breakfast literally send you to a different world. Musically impeccable, brilliant ’soundscaping’ in background noises, fills, & effects, lyrically one of the few bands which truly intelligent profound thoughts & musings.
Great review Justin, Supertramp had 2 great songwriters, Rick Davis and Roger Hodgson,. Roger is my favorite of the 2 and this song Hide In Your Shell is a reason why. Roger searches and often finds spirituality within himself and brings out beautiful, loving, inspirational songs with incredible lyrics. This song has gotten me and many people through some dark days in their journey through life. Watching Roger perform this, other Supertramp hits and solo work is truly a magical evening.

Yes, the title track is an absolute classic, one of their finest, and the lyrics probably even more relevant now than they were in 1974, 46 years ago....

I think I have made a similar comment on every Supertramp reaction you've done so far but, I'm really glad you're giving them a listen! I have yet to see another reaction channel dive into the full album from start to finish. Someone else here commented saying that Rudy was the next song that is on the same level as School. I agree with that but I know there are moments you will love in Asylum, Dreamer and If Everyone Was Listening. There really isn't a weak song on the album but, of course, you'll be the judge of that for yourself.

What am I going to say about Hide in Your Shell ?, Just comment that it is a song that has accompanied me throughout my life, since I first heard it, some forty years ago.
I remember it, like it was yesterday, when I first heard this song on the album Supertramp Live in Paris.
From that moment, that song and its composer, Roger Hodgson, connected in a very special way with me; And so I realized that, from that great group Supertramp, to me the songs that I liked the most and synchronized the most with my feelings and emotions, were those that Roger Hodgson was composing.
I have been able to enjoy many of his concerts around the world, and each one has its own special touch, always with the quality of sound (perfect), and with a performance on stage in which it truly creates magic between the public and the artist. What a great atmosphere among all !!.
By the way, what about some of his great hymns, Give A Little Bit, perhaps it was perfect for you to prepare a video opinion on this great song, and even more so in today's times, in which solidarity and respect towards The next one should be essential, and part of each one of us, just commenting that Roger Hodgson is going to release a new album, Classics Live 2, I'm sure he will surprise us all with the songs that will be included.

The lyrics in this one almost confirm the concept of a voice in the main characters head which slowly drives him crazy in the next track and eventually doing the crime of the century. It looks like all the songs have a connection but I might be wrong.
When I was comin up, I never missed a Supertramp show. Their live shows were such an awesome vibe!!
The song of the album for many. And no wonder! It speaks for itself. Crime Of The Century may not have sold as well as Breakfast In America, but commercial success is probably the poorest way to gauge the quality of music. I love the work you're doing ~ bringing the very best of the past to new listeners in 2020. A sound, down-to-earth, but very meaningful commentary as well ~ especially concerning the lyrics. I think Crisis? What Crisis? would be an excellent album to pull a few from as well. It was the album I listened to the least when I was younger, but now I listen to it more than the others. "A Soapbox Opera". What a song! Anyway.... thank you for your efforts here on YT. I hope many younger people will find your channel and realize that once upon a time, there was an era of truly inspired music.

Roger Hodgson was the soul of Supertramp... He and Davies wrote deeply personal songs. In the context of the album, it really works for me. Wonderful stuff. Crisis What Crisis and Even In The Quietest Moments are well-worth exploring... brilliant.
It will grow more and more on you - it's an amazing song that moves all over the chords and jumps around in unexpected ways.
It is my favourite Supertramp song - so well written - alongside "Words Unspoken" from their 1970 debut album ( "Supertramp").
This sadly overlooked gem of an album is a must listen, if you are into early progrock, great tunes and interesting lyrics.
Emotionally and melodically this is in my opinion the best (prettiest) music on the album, and my top 5 on the Supertramp discography. Obviously ... in a well-made reaction as Justin has accustomed us, other important factors must be considered to make a final balance of which music is better.

Everything they did was a masterpiece. My all-time favorite song by them is “my kind of lady” I played alto saxophone in the marching band back in the 70s and I’m a big saxophone fan. The solo he does at the end of the song is just phenomenal. Lay your head back close your eyes and soak it up because you won’t be disappointed.

The whole album is fantastic, and reminds me of summer with friends and family. After hearing this album hundreds of times it will grow on you over time. For me it's not one song is better then the other, for me the album is one continuous song. Nice reaction JP, look forward to the next Tramp installment.

Bur Justin, if you listen to Even In The Quietest Moment, don't pick a live version that shows Roger singing. Those are from when he was solo without the band, and musical parts (and the birds in the intro) are missing. Get the extended studio version.
Supertramp has a real economy of sound. They strike the the perfect balance of introducing new transitions at the right time, and sparks of sounds and vocals just when they should be for maximum impact, with a stripped down clean sound always. One of my favourite bands
This was my "go to" album if I didn't want anything but solitude.
Yes, Supertramp were always a Progressive Rock band that dabbled in the Pop arena. And finally, in 1979, they stepped fully into the Pop sector with the Album Breakfast in America. The result was a sensational success because you had such good melodies performed by a band who put great emphasis on production and instrumentation. Almost like they did it for kicks...
Firsts listens can be a little underwhelming, and this certainly was my first impression of this song. The more I listened to this the more the melody came to the fore. I must be one of those people who can appreciate clever, intricate music, with lots of moving parts but in the end I’m looking for the melodic line, the catch, to hang my hat on. Supertramp were very good at melody and this song came to be a favourite from this album.

Did you notice the theremin during the chorus? And the double vocals @ "I as a boy" himself and him as a boy. The album is full of those bits.

Supertramp working hard make crime of century ....put a pressure make a great album ...before of crime of century... last two albums : Rose (supertramp1) & Indelibly Stamped stay with a lot of financial debt .... is the last chance to prove make a good music ....supertramp is roger hodgson & rick davies ....but secret is roger under all .
Supertramp was my go to group in college. So many great albums and so many great songs on Crime of the Century.
Justin, I'm really enjoying your take on the prog movement. A special thanks for playing Renaissance ... a band that didn't get much airplay primarily due to conceptual and long songs. Annie Haslam has a beautiful voice. I saw her 2 years ago. Even though she has lost an octave, her voice remains angelic. I suggest giving a listen to her album, Annie in Wonderland. The cover artwork was fantastic ... Roy Wood did the art, produced the LP. and played most every instrument. Roy Wood was a founding member of ELO with Jeff Lynn. There is a cool song titled something like Holico. Without giving things away, it has an African percussion section ... very cool song and lyrics. Anyhow, I really enjoy your perspective on the music you select as it was from a different period ... a period when most prog musicians were trained.

I liked your “musical“ comment. I can definitely see that. And I liked your comment in the last song how this would be a good band to introduce someone to Prog. For me the way they differ from a lot of prog bands is that their melodies are catchier, by and large. Strong melodies that, at least for me, grabbed me right away. And I think that’s really difficult to do as a songwriter. I think that ability isn’t appreciated as much as it could be. Or, at least it appeals to me. I’m looking for a moving direct musical experience, not so much cerebral-ity, though there is a place for a lot of different musical expressions. Thinking back to when I first heard this I remember loving the chorus, and the build up to it I thought that was all really well done. This is one of my favorite songs on this album. But, I’m with you in loving “school“, perhaps my favorite..
JP! So, here’s why I have always loved “The ‘tramp”, since I first heard School and this album.
Roger’s songs come from his background of British folk and pop. Most of his songs have either a dramatic/quiet sound or a distinctly “poppy” sound, in general.
Rick’s songs, on the other hand, come from his love of American R&B, jazz, Gershwin, etc. His lower voice and background the the band it’s “edge”.
John Anthony can swing those horns equally, from genre to genre.

Supertramp is very unique.... To me they constitute their own genre which I like to think of as "Soul Pop... In as where they can have a pop like Sheen but there's always something deeper about the track ...soulful in its own way. I think you'll find more examples of this as you venture on with this album Justin..... Cheers from Canada!

The musical blending in their songs are par excellence! I think they're on par with Alan Parsons in the power and clarity of their melodies and the message it's sending across. Just beautiful!
You still have to try doing Rodger Hodgson's ( Supertramp singer and songwriter) Fools Overture live with orchestra. It illustrates his ability to arrange a song. As good as he is as a singer and musician, his creativity and vision on how to arrange a song is off the charts on this piece. Love your channel and continued success. 👍

This and Aja top my list for favorite all time albums. I'm really enjoying your reviews and analysis, and I'm glad you're enjoying it too. "School" is still the best track, IMO, but "Rudy is a close second. Can't wait to see more!

Great review of one my favourite songs of Roger Hodgson. Agree with your point of view about loneliness and that's the idea of the song and that's why this track is absolutely loved for so many. We usually have that feeling while listening to some songs, that they are talking about us, about our inner thoughts and feelings. We tend to identificate ourselves with the lyrics, they come straight to our heart because Roger writes his songs from his own heart. I love the musicality of the song as well, that crescendo near the end of the song makes me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. And it's not only with this song, all the songs written by Roger provoke that feeling that it seems they speak of oneself. For me Don't Leave Me Now is another special song, I'd love to hear a review from you about this one. In fact all of them are special to me. He has written so many gems, and we are very lucky because he is still on tour world wide performing amazing shows with all his well known songs from his time in Supertramp and from his solo work which is awesome too, with his band or with orchestras. Take a look at his website to know the Tour dates, and if he plays near your area, don't hesitate, purchase a ticket and give yourself the gift of a journey through your life, through your feelings. It really worths!. And, as at the moment there's no chance because the current health situation, check Roger's You Tube channel to see him on stage, and have a wonderful time. I promise you won't regret at all.

You really SHOULD listen to a lot more of Queen, now that you mention it. lol! I characterize Supertramp as 'prog lite'. I think you actually stated this in one of your earlier reactions - they would make a good entry point for folks who haven't listened to prog rock but want to ease into it.
Also there’s some “give a little bit” was a major hit in their collection.

The interesting thing about the two main singers is that Roger tended to write a lot about spirituality while Rick seems to be more of the bluesy rocker. (Funny you mention voices in the wind-- that's on one of Rogers solo albums.) The first album they made after Roger left, Brother Where You Bound?, features David Gilmour on the title track. You may be a bit young to appreciate this song-- I have always found this to be a nostalgic piece, but when I first heard it I felt a connection to it. I have quoted this song many times since I first heard it.
Love this song, as I do most of the album. Sort of sing-along but love it in the different movements. Great one. Queen is quite a bit more bombastic, dramatic. But I can see your comment in the fact that it's easy listening in a way. You pick up the melodies very easily.
Once again - when these albums were made - at the height of prog - we were listening for the album experience. Each song was created to take the intensity and mood from the previous song and bring that intensity and mood to the next song. It is not just an album of individual song units to be evaluated as such. Each song takes the listener to a time and space mood frame until the album ends. That's just the way prog albums worked - so invariably the 'best moments' of most prog albums will be at the end of the album plus maybe a coda or reprise to finish the album off.
I totally agree. Taking songs from an album that has to be listened to and experienced as whole is limiting, unfair and frankly, cheats the listener. Supertramp albums are to be played start to finish without interruption!! 😊
Very true mouse! While I can't do that due to the nature of the channel, as I move forward in an album I always go back and listen to the previous songs to understand the flow/movement of it :D
