I personally think that overcoats only look good if they go past the knee, especially for the vintage/old money look, so I would go for the longest one
Totally agree about the vintage watch suggestion, although modern watches with vintage styling can work just as well (the Cartier tank being a good example).
Great video. I love a navy blazer. One in wool with braze buttons in the winter and one in linen with bone buttons for the summer. I also love Belgian loafers. I would add Nantucket Red chinos. They look great on the Cape in the summer and in Palm Beach in the winter. With respect to an overcoat I would include a Camel Hair Polo Coat.
Thank you, Walter. A linen blazer for summer sounds fantastic. Great point with the camel hair polo coat. It doesn't get much classier than that 👌 Thanks for the tip with the Nantucket chinos. I will check them out.
Just found your channel. Great stuff! Back in the day it was mandatory to dress well and most everyone wore this type of clothing. At some point could you please discuss your thoughts on todays use of cuffs and pleats. Thank you for sharing this type of information. My faith is restored in peoples ability to dress well.
Thank you, Mark :) Glad you liked it. Do you mean the fact that cuffs and pleats are not that common anymore, or that they are making somewhat of a resurrection?
Wide wales for me! I like old fashioned: when you're old, why not embrace age? And another one here for past the knee overcoats - arthrtic knees need that extra protection. Your cashmere coat is beautiful - I want it!
Pants were always cuffed in the Ivy look but manufacturers found they could save money (fabric) by hemming pants. Almost no manufacturers offer unfinished pants that could be cuffed or hemmed, again because saving one or two inches of fabric per pants can save a company hundreds of thousands of dollars when manufacturing 100,000 pants.
Great video Lukas, the Ivy League style is the one I've adopted. A couple of thoughts & a question: You're so right about cream coloured chinos, such a step up from tan. I notice your tie is striped from right to left, not the athentic US Brooks Bros, style left to right! And the question: how do you feel about wearing a tie with a button down shirt? (no, I don't use that dreadful abbreviation lol). As an Englishman I just can't bring myself to do it!
Thanks for watching, Barry :) I only use the OCBD to save space for the text in the video 😁 I read somewhere that it's usually not recommended to wear a tie with a button down shirt, but I actually kind of like the look. How about you? I've seen Simon Crompton and also the guys from The Armory wear button down shirts with a tie and I personally think they make it look great and casual.
@@Lukas_Schanderl It seems hard-wired into my brain that a button-down shirt DOES NOT go with a tie. Don't get me wrong, an OCBD (now you've got me doing it😉) is my daily casual go-to when I'm not wearing a tie and when you see photos of John Cassavetes totally rocking the look or Gregory Peck peering over his sunglasses with the top button popped & skinny tie there can be no doubt its a very cool style. Do you have any experience of the tab collar Lukas? I thinking a tab collar shirt maybe my next sartorial investigation.
Just looked up the guys you mentioned. They really knew how to dress. Crazy how much times have changed. I haven't tried tab collar shirts yet but I really like the look. I'll put it on my personal list as well :) Let me know when you get yours.
If I ever get a watch, i have my eye on Longines watches: a fanciful part of me wants one with the moon phases; however, for the “esthetic”, I’d like the Dolcevita.
I feel the same. I really love their moon phase watches, but I would probably start with the Dolcevita, as well, as a stepping stone to the Tank Americaine.
I want something less preppy but don't want to look like I'm cosplaying peaky blinders while touching on outlaw themes and american/dustbowl themes. Advice/places to start looking?
Thanks for watching. That's not an easy task 😅 I guess some of the vintage Ralph Lauren looks on Pinterest might work? With green, brown colors, suede leather jackets?
I love my loafers! Both suede and regular leather :). I should add a blazer back to my wardrobe again, but I'm usually pretty happy with either a suit or a sports coat, and don't really feel the lack of a blazer. I agree with you on red pants- I bought burgundy cords for this winter :). I do a lot of striped, rep ties, but am also looking at more foulards to round out my collection. I agree with you on red/dark green too. I'm with you that the alpaca coat looks better, although the navy is great too! In terms of sweater colours, I would add burgundy to your list. I have really been loving that colour the last couple of years! Was the Seiko that you mentioned the Presage collection?
Thanks for watching, Simon. Great point to add burgundy :) Fantastic color for sweaters. Yes, It was the Seiko presage collection, with the cocktail edition. Quite a nice watch in my opinion.
@@Lukas_Schanderl I always watch your videos! We have very similar taste in style, so it's great to see what you cover from video to video. Thank you, Simon. I'm glad to hear that. Timex and Seiko are probably the best budget friendly dress watches. I really like many of their models, especially the vintage ones. The presage definitely looks interesting but for some people, it might be a bit too large

The style if one understands it, teaches quite a bit about being smart with money. It's emphasis is quality over quantity. It is also timeless and doesn't chase nor concern itself with the hottest trend or following the crowd . One can build a wardrobe that can be worn for a lifetime. Beats replacing several times annually to replace items no longer in style or because they were cheaply made and didn't last. My Brooks Brothers blue blazer is twenty years old and looks new, perfectly tailored. My Lacoste and Ralph Lauren Polo shirts are over ten years old. I can go on . I can go anywhere and am always one of the best dressed and get compliments in my old classic clothing. Only place I don't have to go is to the store to buy new clothes.
hello! about the blazer. single vent or double vent? i might go to a tailor. and since it's gonna be unlined, there probably won't any padding. but what if i have weak shoulders and would like to help the situation?
Thanks for your comment, Pierce. I went for a double vent blazer. Maybe you could also go for wider peak lapels to create a larger V-line in your upper body? And maybe you could add a tiny bit of extra padding, but not too much to make it look unnatural.
Most will get more use out of the sport jacket than the true blazer. Thinner wales will look less "country" overall? Pleated front chinos and other trousers will look more formal. Ivy Style and "old money" are not necessarily the same thing, since most people equate OM with more subdued looks than the brighter preppy looks even though it's largely just a rename for Trad.
That's not a trench coat because it doesn't go past your knees. Also, many might prefer the Car Coat to the full overcoat, etc. The most typical Ivy look would actually be the Duffel coat because it's more a true cold weather coat than a businessman's overcoat.
The point is these guys are in COLLEGE, so they're still spending less money on their wardrobes which aren't going to follow them so much into the post-grad business world over half century ago and all that. So now people are taking these former student looks and weekend looks and using them more and more for office looks and such on days that aren't just Office Casual Fridays now.
I totally agree with you on all of your suggestions. I wish I would have discovered suede loafers a long time ago. Suede is durable and easy to care for. It appears as though Hocketry has served you well.
Thank you, Arthur. Totally agree :) I also started to really like suede jackets, but they are a bit out of my price range at the moment :D I'm pretty happy with their clothes, especially the trousers, jackets and coats.
Double breasted blazer and tie calls for a spread collar, not button collar. You can get away with button down collars with single breasted blazer or sport jacket though
Personally I don't think a button down shirt should be worn with a jacket or tie. One reason is that your collar should be tucked under the jacket lapel. i.e. there should be no gap. The button-down collar makes this very difficult.
I think that just applies for 'dressed' shirts i.e. cutaway collars and co. The point of going OCBD is to adopt a more relaxed look without getting the austerity of a wide collar. I personally think that it looks odd to wear a cutaway collar with a tweed jacket and flannel trousers, OCBD seems more appropriate as it is more casual.
I don’t understand ‘looking like old money’ when one isn’t from ‘old money’. I know a lot of ‘old money’ people. And none of them dress like this. My Ivy League friends don’t dress like this either. Btw. I turned down two interviews from Harvard. People brag about going to Harvard. I brag I turned them down. Twice.
Thanks for the feedback, Eric. I usually write a script but try to speak without reading from a teleprompter, and then all those less than ideal filler words and sentences creep in. Definitely an area I plan to improve on.
