YAY! It's Charlie Chaplin. He was my fave & constant companion & tour guide when I was there. He's the big, fluffy, toothless puss seen in a few spots, but 2:13 is a good cameo shot of him. I wonder if he's still alive? What a nifty video to stumble upon. Here's hoping that I can make it back to see the kitties again before I 'buy the farm.'
I have a polydactyl mainecoon who has 24toes in total, he likes splashing his paw in water and grabbing food or toys with his extra toes. Its like he's got boxing gloves on :)
My cousin has a Hemingway cat and one time when I was pooping in one of their restrooms the cat pushed in a toy mouse under the door and I pushed it back out but then the cat pushed it back in haha. I proceeded to do this a few more times and then stopped to finish my business. When the cat realized i had stopped he grabbed back the mouse from under the door using his extra paw! haha. These cats are extremely playful. I love them.
My poly, Shadow, has seven toes on each front paw and two extra dew claws on the back paws, giving him twenty-six toes. Since he has "opposable thumbs" I threaten to teach him how to help with housework. He gets a lot of attention because of those big feet, and because he's a pretty fellow, Russian Blue/Bengal/Heinz 57 mix. There seems to be a history of polydactylism among the many cats my sister and niece have nurtured over the years, which is where Shadow comes from. My sister's clowder of cats, that is.
I didn't know polydactyls were considered Hemingway cats, but that's neat! very cool so many of them retained the gene that made them have thumbs. my cat tries the doorknob all the time in an attempt to get out and we have always said if he had thumbs the little turkey would be gone lol
I love this! My cats (I have 3 rescues) have blessed my life in more ways than I can say. They are my inspiration to being a writer and an artist. Although, when they try to sit on my keyboard, it's time to stop and give some lovin or they won't stop till they get it. Great video!
Thanks SO much for sharing this! I recently was adopted by a Hemingway kitty. He's a 6 month old stray that came to my door and decided he wanted to live here.... The first day I saw him he was timid so I just put out some food. By the second day when I woke up in the morning I heard a thump against my front door and there he sat in the doorway LOL I opened the door and in he came. When you love cats, what's one more?
At 2 m 16 he mentions the cats using their extra toe to paw food off the bowl - my 7 month old ginger polydactyl does that with his water bowl, a running tap in the sink and the water plates under pot plants. Very, very intelligent boy though, very chatty too. Is this a trait of polydactyls or am I just very lucky?
Had a polydactyl cat when I was younger, she was a black and white cat. Also all of her kittens were polydactyl. We always called multi-toed cats "mitten kittens."
My cat, Felix is a black, medium haired Hemingway cat. Me and my now ex-wife adopted him at the VA Beach SPCA back in 2008 when I was stationed there. He is probably the most laid back, friendliest animal I have ever owned, and I currently have him with me now. I love this breed!
I visited the Hemingway House a few weeks ago, beautiful place. Saw many 6 toe kitties. I've always had cats but never a Hemingway 6 toe cat. That's okay, I love all just the same.
I only just heard about Hemingway cats. I just recently adopted a polydactyl cat. My cousin was offering up a 7 toed kitten 3months of age and I was like OMG, I would love to own a 7 toed kitten LOL, but once I adopted him and took him to my vet and got him looked over and got all his shots and got him neutered, I found out that he has 25 toes all together, normal cats have 18, my cat, NAMED ERNEST HEMINGWAY (Ernie for short) has 8 on one front paw, 7 on the other and 5 on both back feet
got my cat from there! lol his original name was YETI i re named him Frankie...he was the best!!! lol if i knew how to post his pic on here i would!!! lol they are the best!! and they can actually tell when you are sick or when you are about to have an attack of any physical impairment. Polydactyls are so unique and extremely special.
One day I took my first cat to the vet. We had an appointment, but for some reason there were many emergencies that day. One of the ladies that worked there felt bad, so she decided to show me a little stray that had been brought in. So I went and saw the sweetest little Hemingway kitten. It was love at first sight. We adopted her and she is so happy. She had been abused, then abandoned, and then hit by a car. Then we adopted her, making the perfect cinderella story.
LOVED this. I want to see the Hemingway Museum some day. I too have a "Hemingway" polydactyl cat, named Bruiser. They are amazing cats.
I take care of an orange kitty whose front paws looks like mittens. I named him Garfield for obvious reasons. He is so sweet.

+Cat with thumbs My Shadow is the same way! He only has 22.5 toes, though!

"cat's are not disruptive when you write" as my cat walks across my keyboard right now.... I have a polydactyl cat he's the best!
SO cute! I have a five-year-old Hemingway and it's amazing how he can manipulate objects with that opposable thumb.
My mom grew up with cats and she had a polydactyl cat that was a rescue and it was peregnate so it had polydactyle kittens!
Love cats period!
