  • Wodyetia bifurcata, known as the Foxtail Palm, is a medium height, thin trunk palm that is self-cleaning and has a smooth crown shaft. Leaves are plumose (fluffy) and this species wants full sun in most areas and tolerates heat. Cold tolerance is, at best, into the low 20's and growth rate is medium. These trees have been know to be more cold tolerant around water.
At The Tree Planters, we have installed and transplanted thousands of large trees of every variety all over Florida for over 50 years. Every tree we sell, we plant. Every tree we plant, we guarantee for One Full Year.

I've lived in south central Florida (deep inland where some winters have severe radiational cooling nights) going on 24 years. As a palm enthusiast I can attest to the thermal value of large lakes during the winter months (akin to Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastal areas). Proximity to large lakes, especially the southeast side of them, provides (I estimate) one full USDA hardiness zone higher than the surrounding area. I know this not only from taking direct temperatures using hi-lo thermometers, but from the zone 10-11 palms (coconut, royal, solitare, adonidida, alexandrea, king, spindle, bottle, triangle, et al that grow there (proof is in the pudding). Further, high ground areas along the Lake Wales Ridge also have significantly higher nighttime temperatures during the winter months during radiational cooling nights (the coldest nights, more so than advective cold events). I remember when I first got into the palm hobby some 20+ years ago, I went to just about every palm nursery and big box store in Highlands County, Florida, asking for a foxtail palm. The staff looked at me like I just landed from Mars -- they hadn't a clue what species of palm I was talking about. Now the foxtail is becoming much more popular and ubiquitous in my area. I have many foxtails, the tallest being 30 feet high overall. IMO, foxtails are great looking palms for those fortunate to have the climate to grow them. How long does it take for it to grow that big?
