I got it off using a long reach 13 mm with a swivel head as it’s not in the easiest of places to remove but you still have to move all the air pipes and a bunch of wiring just to get to it
Hey buddy. Just went though all that too. Check your ground strap between the body at the passenger side that attaches to the motor. It is an exposed copper braided strap. It will be deteriorated and just replace it. I reused the ends by melting the silver out and cleaning it out. Pesto all our problems for the past 4 years gone.
Thanks for the video. I don't have a hoist so this helped me in not jacking and securing it up. You where lucky! Someone had your starter out before and was too lazy to put the third tough to get at bolt back in... There is a bolt that goes through from the transmission side. Shift linkage has to be removed on an automatic and a bunch of other hoses and wiring to access it. My ground strap is in rough shape as well so I'm doing it at the same time.
Mine did something very similar if not the same thing as yours. Although, after replacing battery and starter it ended up being my key fob just went bad. I could still unlock and lock my car.. ect but couldn't start it. I only had one key so I couldn't really test it with the other key but after sending my key away to Seattle Mini they replaced the key and I haven't had the issue again. Just throwing this out there incase anyone else has tried all of the other options.
Dang, that sucks. Same thing happened to my R60 a few months ago, but I couldn't even get it to rolling start (mine's a manual too). I got the starter replaced by the stealership and it worked after that. I can hear it click so it sounds like the starter is trying but not getting enough voltage. My only guess is something with the battery (or the cables)? Did you try jump starting it?
I just found the issue, there is a ground strap from the engine block to the frame that was broken. I would check that on yours and it sounds identical

I tried jump starting it too. Going to see if there might be a bad cell in the battery or maybe a bad ground somewhere
The starter has three bolts if you had two one is missing it is a. 13mm which goes through to the threaead part of the starter
How did u got it off?
We're is this located

At the time of attempting to start it, what exactly did it sound like? Did the starter engage for less than a second then shut off?
In the bell housing of the transmission
Going through this right now , ridiculously difficult. I can't even find the bolts
You'll get it. Tight spot

It ended up. Eing the ground strap on the back of the engine. I made a follow up episode for it. Hope that helps.
I’m curious to know the issue. Mine is doing the same thing.

@coreyclaybrook do you have the location of that ground strap? I see the one on top. But will have to look where there might be another one.
@coreyclaybrook you were right! The ground strap was bad. I ordered a new one. Hopefully that is it! Thank you!
That was it! I made a follow up video thanking you.
