For the new prepper- I learned that Best Buy Dates are just that. You can store for years longer. That made life easier for me when I first started.
Spaghetti sauce- in a jar tastes much better than older tomatoe sauce in cans. Where ever you use canned tomato sauce, you can spaghetti sauce. Chili, casseroles, Spanish rice and ofcourse Italian dishes.
Start with your favorite recipes- buy enough for a month, then 3mths etc.
When I buy chili ingredients, I buy enough for 3 meals.
Once you meet your goal, always replace what you use.
Rotate your peanut butter, nuts, flour, oils, dressings, oatmeal. They will go bad.
Build up your hygiene products. Enough toothpaste, soaps etc for a 3ths, then 6 mths.
Same with cleaning products and First aid * Bleach and Hydrogen peroxide will go bad.
Thanks for sharing your pantry and info with us!

I bought some of those cafeteria trays from Amazon that I use to stack stuff on. They make a sturdy surface to stack different levels and they have that little lip on the edge.

In the box of things you need to use quickly find recipes that uses 1 or more ingredients. Make the recipe then freeze. You get freezer meals and get to use your items before they spoil.

You can just keep regular sugar and molasses and make brown sugar. Mix one cup of white sugar with one tablespoon of molasses. You can add less or more molasses if you need light or dark brown sugar. It also helps your prep space because you would be able to use that bin for something else. That is all that brown sugar is. You are doing great! Keep up the good work!

Love your pantry tour! I love how you show even the imperfect parts that you still need to work on. I have a tip for those cereals you said you might need to throw away. I JUST cleaned out my kitchen pantry and found lots of open, partially eaten cereals that got "lost" and were stale! I did feed some to our chickens and ducks but if they weren't too far gone, I poured the cereal onto a cookie sheet and put it in a 250° oven for a bit to crisp them up. Then I used them in a rice Krispy treat type bar with the butter/ marshmallow base- you can really use and kind of cereal in those! They came out good considering what they started with! It also used up some partial bags of marshmallows left over from camping/smores season!

Thank you! With kids, especially teen boys, my pantry gets ransacked often lol That is a great idea for the cereal! I need to make a new system with the cereal so that we don't have as much waste.

write the BB or expiring date on the side (front) and top of the products. I use a black sharpie to write on the items. I do it when I bring the items home from the store, i have been doing it for years. So all of my pantries have dates on them. I never let things expire anymore, because I can see when it expires everytime i look at my shelves. Has done wonders for me.

We use a sharpie to write the date of purchase and don't worry about best by date. So staring Dec. We write 12 / 22 on top and or on front. More is better, larger is better. It works good.

Lots of can last so much longer than the Best Buy date. As long as the can isn’t dented or bulging the food is still good in those cans. Home canned food can be nutritionally good for at least 10 years. As long as the seal isn’t broken it’s still good even after 10 years. The nutrition may start to degrade by then but it’s still edible. But that’s a great job using those foods first. That’s what rotation is all about.

You might like to try the powdered peanut butter for longer term storage. It is good well past the use date. Walmart has the best tasting and is much cheaper than the other dry brands. It’s not sweetened but you can add a little bit of honey. Mixing with warm water seems to work best for me. I use it for health reasons. 1.5 g of fat and 50 calories per 2 Tablespoons of dry compared to 14g of fat per Tablespoon for regular peanut butter. I enjoy your channel. I raised 6 sons as a single mother. They were all in sports so had ravenous appetites!! I learned long ago how to prepare good, healthy, homemade meals cheaply. It will benefit me now as a senior on social security.

    Thank you for your video.
As I like to say, "You're miles ahead of the herd".
I'd not toss the peanut butter right away. I just watched Admiral Preparedness open a jar of peanut butter with a BBD of 2013 and it was as good as the day it was stashed. Kept unopened in a cool dark place and the stuff lasts way longer than it's supposed to.
    Imagine that.
If your preps are not dusty, ... you haven't been prepping long enough! AGGHHH!!!!! Or you have an OCD cleaning compulsion, ... just saying. And there's nothing wrong with an OCD cleaning compulsion either, ... just saying.
Oh yeah, ... I just stopped into the local grocery and a small 2 lb bag of beans was priced at $6.49. I almost pooped my pants.
I was given a huge box of coffee pods a while that was worth about $40 at the time so I emptied the pods to get about $4 worth of coffee. What a freaking scam. But what a "profitable" scam eh?
    Keep prepping and good luck!

    • @RaisingHouseandHome
      @RaisingHouseandHome  2 роки тому +3

I can't believe the cost of beans or really all the staples today. It used to be those were a safe bet for nutritious affordable meals. Now it seems nothing is safe from inflation :( I worry for all of us. I am so glad that we got rid of the K machine. We got these K-cups on sale a long time ago and have been trying to use them up. It is a huge expense! I combat the dust often and the cobwebs lol Spiders love my storage area.

I have never been able to grow tomatoes for some reason! I just don't have the green thumb for it. I gave up a few years ago as it was costing me quite a bit and I wasn't getting anything in return for my investment. It was cheaper for me to purchase the pasta sauce and store it.

Home grown tomatoes are such a joy to eat. I'm growing 2 varieties in the spring. One paste and the other a beefsteak variety. Have you reached out to your local department of agriculture? Explain what happens and what it looks like. It might be something as easy as amending your soil. Good luck!
