99% of the cameras on the market are better than the users who own them. Way too much number and spec wars between folk who should focus on becoming better at the art of shooting rather than gear experts.

Camera companies have figured out that focusing consumers on the shortcomings of technology instead of their own abilities is much more palatable & profitable.

They may be packed with features but they also lack the basic package together and they lack the modern processing found in every smartphone today. I'm looking for few simple specs: 1) big sensor and fast lens for low noise in low light (shooting on the streets at night), 2) 4K 60p for good quality, future proof high resolution with smooth motion capture, 3) stabilization for handheld shooting. Right now I can get some of those but not all and the best options are still quite expensive as here with the 50mm f/1.4. Panasonic has big sensor but crops in 60p. Fujifilm crops much less but has no IBIS and the lenses aren't that fast or stabilized either. Of course if you don't need video and don't print large you can use 20 year old DSLR and you'll have still fine images for web use but that's not what we are for, right?

Gerald Undone well deserved shout out. Both of you guys provide rational thoughts in a sea of click bait. Thanks for that!
I feel like two things are holding me back from a pre purchase: 1- lenses. I am. I’m not super fired up about making the switch to FF from my gh5 and basically keeping the same bokeh or even less... running any of the fast lenses on the gh5 I’m able to get a FF 2.8 look. Moving to a FF f4 look doesn’t seem like an upgrade... now, wham sigma drops a 24mm F1.4 my attention will officially be grabbed. This seems like a timing issue and it’s unfortunate that Sigma isn’t able to have these lenses ready to go in April. Maybe this is an agreement between pana Leica and sigma. Maybe this is a camera conspiracy...
2- auto focus. My GH5 is totally workable, but I wish that it was better. I would love to see the af functional in VFR. For the work I do 120af would be super helpful...
I think pana is making an error releasing the camera in the same manner as the gh5 with major upgrades needed at release to meet the promised expectation. I think eventually they delivered, but I think the initial letdown is hard on the brand.
I’m pretty sure the a7iii will do what I need, just wish the 120 was higher quality in fact all the video...
All I want is the perfect camera...

The issue is that it feels like Panasonic is trying to entice video shooters with a camera that wasn't made with them in mind. They're marketing it much the same way they did the GH5, right down to giving Griffin Hammond one to make a documentary with, but as you said it's not a GH5 and it's not comparable. That they're then adding what is essentially a video tax to get features that should be in it for the $2500 they're asking for, to me, is even more annoying.
I really wanted to like it, I'm a Panasonic shooter, but I think most criticism is valid.

Indeed, I really want to like this camera, as well as the S1R. I was even going to be an early adopter, all they needed to do was release something decent, and the money was their's. It's funny that the release actually stopped me in my tracks from ordering it. Now I'm really trying to find a reason to buy it, but the GH5/GH5s are simply better video cameras - full stop. I can already use my current speedboosters for similar dof, etc, etc. The gradeability will also make the picture out of the the GH5s better. For video, FF only really gives an advantage at dof at this point.

I think it's a good first step for Panasonic FF. But I think people are upset, myself included, that we were really hoping for 4k60p without crop at 10 4:2:2. Now if they're able to do that with their paid update, that would be a very worthwhile upgrade imho and would make me highly interested in this if a7siii never comes out. That being said, I do also agree that the focus issue is huge and Canon & Sony have much better currently. Whether this is an "early version" or not, I am surprised that they would have this displayed this camera with such a bad auto focus if they plan on making a major over haul to it. Meaning I don't see a major update by the time this camera is released, maybe also in a future update? Idk, my eyes are still firmly waiting on the A7siii, meanwhile I'll keep shooting on my T7i and just upressing to 4k so I can shoot at 60fps, even if it is 8 bit.

So, there will be features that won't appear or be announced until the S1 is released and after release. I like seeing pre-launch videos for upcoming cameras, but, I don't base my purchase decisions on these videos. What bugs me is when a YT creator makes conclusions about a camera before it's even been released. I get that they want to create content. But, don't make absolutist judgments until you have the final product in your hand.

So many cameras coming out this year... but for a mix of stills/video i'd still choose the Fuji system in the sub $2-3K price bracket.. if you're video centric then it's probably the GH5s, and if you are video only then go with a rigged up BMPCC4K. 4:2:0 is just not enough color to grade with. The GH5 was killer out of the box. It was only later that the AF debacle happened. But even with that, it was still the best mirrorless video camera, by far. This S1 doesn't even rival it's stablemates, for a much higher price tag with so few available lenses, etc. I feel there will be significant discounts before the holidays to move some of these units, especially if the lenses don't come soon enough. Perhaps, Panny themselves should put out a Canon to L-mount adapter to steal any disgruntled Canon users, that may help.

9:58 I really don't get why everyone dislikes this. The only situation in which the flip out screen is better is filming yourself, IMO for every other use case it's actually worse.
With a flip out screen if you want to shoot from the hip you have to look slightly to the side, and the camera strap constantly gets in the way of the screen.

Kaleb, I posted this on Gordon Laing's video review of the S1 he just made a few days ago. I'd be interested in your comments on my response to the review in regard to S1 peaking feature.
Not to beat a dead horse, but to drive a point home to at least my satisfaction I set up a peaking test.
I used the Panasonic S1, the Panasonic GH5, the Panasonic G85, the Nikon Z6, and the Fujifilm X-H1, all using third party lenses.
With the GH5, G85, the Z6, and the X-H1 there was absolutely no change in the quality and intensity of the peaking settings between using peaking to set the focus up and after the camera started rolling.
Sadly, after checking BOTH the EVF and the LCD of the S1 both showed a diminishment in the quality and intensity of peaking once the shot was rolling. This diminishment is SIGNIFICANT, at least on my S1---I'd say at 70% or more %% drop--sometimes very difficult to see, especially on the EVF.
The effect of this is that if you change the focus to another object while rolling you either focus past it before you see it, or you focus past it because you're not sure if your focus is not quite right---and most often it isn't. How do I know that? Because if I stop the shot after shifting focus the original quality and intensity immediately appear. When that happens I find the focus I ended up with was not accurate. Either not focusing far enough, or focusing past the object you are simply guessing.
It seems to me the peaking feature of the S1 is calibrated to be its best, most viewable, and most accurate before the shutter is pressed with a SIGNIFICANT drop off once you start rolling.
Why? This is not the case with the other four cameras I tested---and two of them were Panasonics.
The peaking of the GH5 and the G85 are just...okay ....But they are stable before and after the shot is made, and pretty accurate.
The Nikon is excellent---very easy to use and accurate. Even the gosh-awful Sony peaking is better than the S1---and I didn't think it was possible that anyone could have worse peaking than Sony. (Silly me).
By a hair I think the Fuji X-H1 is best, clean, easy to see without obscuring the shot, and very accurate. The Fuji folks have done it right---and they keep making the X-H1 and X-T3 better.
Will someone with some contacts or influence pass this on to the Panasonic people.
Maybe they know and don't care. Maybe it was done intentionally for reasons I can in no way surmise.
Nikon has done a few analogous things on the Z6, but nothing as egregious as the S1 peaking problem.

Out of the recent first time FF mirrorless releases, the S1 is looking pretty good. The only major con that I can see is native lens selection but if you film with manual focus rigs then it shouldn't matter because you'll probably be adapting good glass to the camera. Great First Release though; esp with the firmware update added.

The most underrated camera of 2018 was the G9. I think it was overlooked because nobody seems to care about stills anymore and it was a true hybrid. I think the S1 cameras are basically the G9 version 2 with a huge FF sensor. It has some of the limitations of the G9 for video but with the paid firmware update (when it comes), it will pull way ahead of the G9 for video. What the hell are people complaining about? Honestly. IMO the only real disappointment is the lack of flippy screen (WTH?).

My problem with your counterpoints for auto focus and lenses is that you say it will get better over time, which is probably true (I don't think it will be to the level you think at least for auto focus) but the camera companies ask people to by the camera now. Not later. Also firmware should not be paid for, if they just charged me a little more for the camera I would be okay with that. In addition to that, the firmware for most of those features feels like the camera wasn't ready for launch. Some of those features should have already come with the camera, it shouldn't be a fee for me to get those features. And this just doesn't go for Panasonic, back when sony lens options and auto focus were shit I gave them the same flack.

I am surprised how Panasonic's new cameras have somewhat been hit as if they were false advertising or lying about their cameras. These set of cameras did not receive any of the hype I thought they would. I use Panasonic cameras for the overall user experience. It does seem like Sony has the lead on auto focus, but that is it. No one is talking about ISO performance anymore now that this camera has arrived. What happened to the lack of dual card slots in other cameras and the praise for this camera offering it? The 4k 60 fps is not a lie, it is capable with an external recorder. that is not a lie. Most cameras had said that they were capable of it. Fuji is the only one that hyped and made clear the ability to do it internally. Everything this camera has done seems to lack any compromises... maybe the autofocus compared to Sony. Panasonic can easily smash the competitors.

I like everything about this camera except that Panasonic is holding back features (even if they plan to charge extra for them later) and that they have not improved the major issues of their 2 year old GH5.
It's maximum price gouging for minimum effort. Panasonic needs to drop the price or provide something more than recycled features in a bloated GH5. Why is AF still unreliable, why is 10-bit 4K60 still external, why is 4K60 cropped to the size of a GH5+Speed booster, why no anamorphic mode, why does the dynamic look like 10-stops, and why does the image get softer very stop over ISO 3200? I know the S1 will excel in other areas compared to the GH5 but these features are the ones I use the most and I don't see any improvements in those areas.
14-stops of Dynamic Range with V-Log is the only thing that sounds great so far but unless they add 12 or 14-bit Raw we'll be squeezing that into a highly compressed 10-bit codec. Isn't that what Sony tried to do with S-Log 3?
I hope the Production models show much better results for AF, Noise and Dynamic Range for video because everything I've seen so far doesn't look any better than a GH5.

Now, that being said, the only I disagree with is lens pricing - I don't expect to see affordable lenses for a while, even with Sigma. And adapting is great, but have a native mount with IBIS is how I shoot, so I need native glass. And that lens price is just not worth it for me.

While their flavor of contrast AF does seem to work fairly well for photo (at least on my G80 when there is decent light), it is just terrible for video and way outdated to boot. I hope they rethink this sooner than later and put phase AF into their GH6 (or whatever's next) just like Olympus did with their cameras.

Problem about the fact that the s1 only have 150mbps at 10bit:
    1, 150mbps cannot resolve 10bit 4:2:2 while the 400mbps all I codec can.
2, the 150mbps codec has a lot of problems when editing.
3, The lack of 400mbps All I codec means that a lot of people have to buy a Ninja V, so further increase in it's already steep prices and it's bulky size.
4, The 150mbps codec have some problems with skintone in vlog l, so imagine what will happen when using the even flatter vlog.

Dang, I really want that full version of V-Log. I guess protecting their cinema line isn't a concern for Panasonic anymore? If so, please add it to the GH6!

Bro, still doesent change that Canon has 4K60,Fullframe,with lower crop 4:2:2 8bit, it has it FOR TWO YEARS ALREADY. Yes, at a price, but i believe they could have squesed a lot more out of this.

Why would they release a half-baked camera then charge for firmware upgrade? Did Panasonic hire Canon executive to run the company? I agree with the other people who are disappointed in the specs. You are a Panasonic guy so you are defending them but if you were honest you will be saying that this camera is a no-go. 15 min recording limit? Are they going backwards? Are we in the year 2000? Maybe the reason they took so long to release a full-frame camera is because they don't have the capabilities to make a good one.

Wow... can't believe you did this Video! I've had enough of this UA-cam HYPE about a camera that no one yet has shown me it's worth over other FF camera for a lot less money! WHAT's WRONG and TRUE about the Panasonic S1 camera and lenses! First Caleb, I am an GH5 owner, invested heavily in Panasonic MFT system. I love MFT and Panasonic. I am not a fanboy of any BRAND,. I am a successful Professional Photographer in Canada of almost 30 years behind the lens, and I've used most Brands over the years, so it would be fair to say I know a bit about cameras and lenses.
So let's get REAL HERE... the new FULL FRAME LUMIX S1 & S1r from Panasonic (other than a larger sensor) doesn't even come "CLOSE in comparison to what the GH5 or G9" do. I don't see Panasonic proving there's better AF with these new Flagships, no articulating LCD screen, I don't see the value in the new XQD card slot and paying even more for the overpriced XQD Memory Cards, I'm already heavily invested in V90 SD cards well over $1,000. But most important I just don't see the value in what Panasonic is offering and the Retail price! There's much better out there, at these prices you could even look at Medium Format sensor size cameras that would blow this out of the water.
Here's what I found today on B&H website on the Pre-order prices for the Panasonic S1 and PRO 50mm f/1.4 Lens:
Panasonic Lumix S1 Camera Body = CAD $3,423.32
    Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 Lens = CAD $3,042.08
TOTAL COST = CAD $6,465.40 (Est. with tax included)
Woohoo, that could buy a lot of cameras and lenses for the few who have this kinda cash to spend!
As a Professional Photographer, I would much prefer purchasing the PANASONIC S1R CAMERA priced today on Pre-order is an ASTONISHING = $5,018.70 Est. CAD. How ridiculously is that? Panasonic priced their S series cameras and at this time, even to only Pro glass is even out of my price range and budget for this year. I can't imagine many that will see the benefits spending this amount of cash into Panasonic S series Cameras today! I truly was excited and waiting to order a new Panasonic S1R camera, however now... Sony & Fuji will get my money for 2019. So glad there's so much competition in the market today :) We must remember it's not all about the gear!!!
That's why I can't believe you made this video Caleb! You usually are trying to save you subscribers money!! That why I don't understand you defending this camera and the costs. This doesn't come close to their GH Series cameras... and even if it did, at this price point it would have been a hard choice! In Full Frame there's much better out there at these prices.

M43 is a mature system, but once Panasonic gets into full frame it will get flushed out. Look at what they did in M43. Look at there pro video cameras, there is no pro Nikon, they are small. Canon DSLR color is poor. My g9 focuses just right. The L line glass with full frame is very Pro equipment. Enjoy the great equipment, so much hard work goes into these new camera’s.

    -> For 4k25p run & gun = perfect
-> For 4k25p static (i.e. unsupervised event B-Cam) = less DOF than a GH5S, stopping down required, ISO advantage gone
-> For 4k60p run & gun (i.e. Weddings) = No "normal" lens available due to the crop factor of 1.5. A 17-55/2.8 would be needed to replicate the 24-105/4 or a 17~45/2.0 to replicate a 24-70/2.8. The current 24-105/4 is useless for 60p recording, and the DOF gets even greater (~5.6) with the crop. A GH5 with a 12-35 could probably produce similar images for a fraction of the price.
    -> For 4k60p static = 30 Minute recording limit.
Bottom line: If you have a GH5 and / or GH5S, the S1 has little to no advantages. If you want slow motion and shallow DOF, you need to look somewhere else. If you want a static B-Cam, you need to look somewhere else. Only if you want to do documentary, the camera is decent but has no advantages to cameras like the A7III.

i shoot documentary - i am buying the fuji X-T3. made my decision as soon as panny f'd up and released this monstrosity. if i wanted the weight of an fs7 (with inferior features) i would rent one.

how would the S1 not have shallow DOF? Is that not an advantage of FF over anything else with a smaller sensor? Sony says it only outputs 4k 24/30p to external recorders. Nice eh? Doesn't have 4K 60P at any crop. It will not have the dynamic range either recording 8bit video. Can only record up to 30 minutes.... really, no advantages over the A7III. You have to be kidding...

@@Reyfox1 What the hell are you on about?
      1) At 4k60p the S1 has a 1.5x crop decreasing the f4 DOF of the current "normal" lens to a DOF equal to f5.6. I can achieve the same DOF with my GH5 and a 12-35.
      2) Yes, at 4k25/30p the S1 has no crop, but since in this mode it does not offer any slow motion -> The only use cases that are left for 4k25/30p (in my case), would be documentary or static event recording. And for the latter, a shallow DOF is mostly not wanted making the GH5 the better choice again. Leaving documentary work, where the S1 might shine, but where the weight might also be a disatvantage.

    • @Reyfox1
      @Reyfox1 5 років тому

@@DSP1337 what are you talking about? Can the Sony A7III (a really good camera but you tossed it into the mix) shoot at 4K 60P? No. If you are shooting a wedding, why would you bring a "normal" (whatever that is) lens? You would take the right lenses for what you need to do. If that means you can't shoot at 4K 60P (which Sony can not shoot at) all the time, 30P will do.
The GH5 is a stellar camera no doubt. And if I had one, I would not see the S1 as an option/upgrade. But if you need a camera that can shoot great images, the GH5 while good is not great.
The camera is not for you. It's not for me either. The G9 is for me. But I won't trash it or any other camera because it's not for "me". It does not diminish the camera's capabilities at all. As you and I know, Panasonic did deliver an update for us to help make the camera better. They won't be sleeping on this one either.

Really watching this camera with hopeful eyes as I'm looking to replace my tried and true Canon 70d within the next year or so. I work with Panasonic's and Sony's at my work and personally think my GH5 is leaps and bounds ahead when it comes to video production and if I were just looking for a video camera I'd snag a GH5 on the cheap when this thing hits. But for my personal cam I tend to look for something that's versatile for both stills and video and all the full frame options seem to kick the gh5's teeth in on the photo side. Would love this to be a best of both world situation but somehow doubt I'll get that lucky on a first generation release of a new system.

I think the low light might even exceed the A7III, the noise floor pattern looks better than the A7III from 51200 and up.
