Got to love Justin. Formidable audio educator and interviewer, He really sets the bar high, cramming all these important questions in a short video and yet leaving Michael very comfortable to tell his stories.
Michaels great in conversation. Doesn’t blow his own horn a bunch, just loves talking shop. His love for brainworx gear is a great asset for the company. I have been in love with PA gear for a number of years now and they just get better and better. Would love to hear an updated 4000 with a bus component.
You don't fake that kind of enthusiasm for a piece of software when you're a Super Pro as Michael is. His genuine excitement came through the scene. I bought the 4000E/G and 9000J. Solely mixing with the E now. Gonna switch to the G in a month or so and then the 9000J after that so I can understand the differences and know how to apply them. Great video!!!
@@PluginAllianceTV Just to hear the words "Digital Masterpiece" together in that way expresses a beautiful confidence which shines out with a loving happiness just like Michael Brauer was lovingly happily shining when communicating his experience of & with in this expose of the Plugin Alliance Brainworx SSL 9000J. Thank You Everyone at Brainworx for The Unbelievably Amazing Quality Plugins & Thank You to Justin at Sonic Scoop for bringing us this great video.
Michael Brauer! 29:40 "I am so Happy - I love that EQ - That was my favorite EQ - So if you're looking for the 9000 sound - That's the one. PA nailed it!!! To me that's all I care about."
It sounds incredible and is very easy to use. It’s really helped me stop fiddling about with tons of plugins with tons of settings and dial in good tones to create better depth and balance in my mixes. 👍🏼
Thanks again for making the J!! It’s what I’ve been missing since moving away from Reasons 9000K style mixer except way better than that will ever be. Mixing Hip Hop has become much easier overnight.
i worked on a 4K G+ in the 1990s. On mix down we often added stereo WHITE 31 Band Eq with 8K upward set quite a lot to add "air" the 4k seemed to be missing - worked well
I'm particularly interested in hearing about the G series from people like you who have actually worked with it. Would you share your experiences a bit? What was/were the main genres you worked with it?
I'm looking for a channel strip and after listening to several demos and mixes, I definitely fan of the 9000J, it makes huge thunderous sounds and adds great transients in your mix, and made by this legend and Brainworx, makes it a want to have. I noticed Plugin Alliance has a bundle of the Focusrite SC, the SSL4000E and G, and the 9000J, so time I'm ordering that bundle, great video, thanks all.
please make a stereo buss plugin for the 4000 and 9000 plugins. similar to the new api plugin. and please make the 4000 / 9000 buss compressor plugin as well!
Lol. I just subbed to the mix and master bundle. Bought the 4000E a few weeks ago (Along with a few others) which made me decide to get the bundle. I have so much to learn with the bundle. I hear some differences with the 4000G and haven’t even tried the J yet. Now I’m looking forward to testing it out . Right now I’ve set up my template to have the 4000E on my busses and master. Im producing electronic/ Dub so having a good bottom end is important. I tend to roll off the top end a lot so my mixes tend to be intentionally dark and warm.
Richard Dodd turned me onto the X-Desk as a summing mixer-he said it sounded like the K when you turn the master fader all the way up and it kicks out of VCA mode or something like that? Do you guys know anything about this? Would my X-Desk that used "SUPERANALOGUE" circuitry achieve a similar sound to that of the J series than? Thanks for this video-awesome stuff!!!
David Roberts ha! Good eye and funny interpretation of the numbers. I still have a bunch of Waves plugs on my system but it’s more because I paid a lot of money for them once upon a time, not because I actually use them much anymore (the sole exception is Maxx Bass). In my opinion, Waves lost their way as a leading developer around the release of those One Knob plugins, and then the celebrity-mixer vanity lines, things like CLA Bass or Manny Marroquin Masters. Total money plays. Between Brainworx, Fabfilter, Kush Audio, McDSP, Maag...just scratching the surface... there’s no reason to go back.
@@russell_szabados you can do quite a maxxbass with a chain of 4 or 5 standard plugins. just the sweet spot settings aren't prepared for you, it's a lot of work and testing. works great, once a chain preset got put together.
@neovxr I’m just seeing your reply now, a month later. Thanks for the info. I’m sure I would do that if I had more time and patience. There’s actually a great subharmonic synth plugin that I prefer called Lowender. It’s made by a small, one man operation called reFuse Software, it’s inexpensive, really versatile and it sounds amazing. Check out the link below. I’ve used it on everything you can imagine, from toms to bass guitar to oboe: www.refusesoftware.com/products/feature/2
This is addressed in the manual which says that THD is off by default because the original "SuperAnalogue" design is so clean. It's available as an option in the plug-in version.
Ok Plugin alliance make great plugs, but the constant BS that comes out after each release is amazing, you'd think that everything before was shit, and now its great, word is one only needs one good Eq, what that EQ is is up to you
Tommy Lockett while I generally agree with you, they have got to market their product and for those people who grew up loving albums mixed on 9000Js, this is a big deal.
yeah it's really a question of feasibility and diminishing returns. I get new plugins only when I am totally sure they will increase my options to make signature sounds, and to express my inner hearing with these knobs they offer. so, a J is really a possibility, but not right now. I'm sure not done with combining the other strips in the same mix, thrown on the instrument where they fit. I use the G for being G, bright and crass, and the bx-N for the low end warmth and crisp treble. Lindell X for insane compression, soft crunch, and air band. etc. etc...

I've always enjoyed Justin's writing and his various websites. Unsurprisingly, he's a great interviewer too. Great video, really fascinating.

wow man. An endorsement from Brauer would be a big deal, but this is more than endorsement

Why is there hiss at -117dB? I toggle push v-gain to the lowest value and activated the noise gate but it's still there.
Wait, Neve desks have third harmonic transistor distortion. That’s part of their sound. Maybe the 9000 has is across all amplitudes?
Would you guys say this is the best for classical/orchestral music?
that's a question to a philharmonic maestro I guess... (like Karajan was very meticulous about all the recording and mixing details)

Why does this plugin output noise ?
Doo you guys find the Plugin Alliance's SSL 9000 J sounding better than Softube's 9k?

No. Softube’s version wins out for me.

@@experiment0003 I mean those who use waves plugins exclusively.
Why does the plugin have V-Gain and THD when Michael says it was clean all the way up and then it clipped (in a nasty way)?
