My fave channel strip! Black is the go-to for kick and snare usually. I find the Orange circuit is wooly and large, less defined, but my fave on bass. It's the only time I use Orange. The gate is fantastic for kick and snare. Seriously can't go wrong with the 4KE. Nice video!
@@mixdownonline Awesome, let me know! Like I said, it's wooly lol It certainly works for bass, especially in the 78 to 110 hz range. I follow it up with an 1176.
Great in depth review of this plug-in. I have been using the plugin alliance/bx version which has been great, but just got this SSL version this week and have been loving it. Really good bit information to know that the output slider adds color. Thanks for what you do!
Great info Chris. Crazy, I have the whole SSL and Slate bundle, so I have this SSL 4K plugin, but I've not used this yet. I'm going to try it next session though. 🎉 The 3 EQ color types is very interesting. Orange passive sounds intriguing.
Hi, thanks for this video, I really enjoyed it. I'm using the Softube Console 1 controller with SSL, API, Neve emulations. It just sounds great for my needs.
I used the SSL Plugin version, which works well for the video, but I recently started to work with the Console 1 version, and it's great...mote flexible on some level, but I wish it had the Brown, and Orange EQ circuit, it only has the Black one.
the output stage (fader included) isn't actually static, it has the non-linearities of a real fader. Which is why pinning it at 12 db and trimming the output gets wildly different results :p
@@TokyoSpeirs Yes, that's what I mentioned as well in the video with the SSL plug-in 😎 The Brainworx version Output fader is a simple clean output level, according to the manual. Which one you like to work with?
Chris thanks for this other video. However, I would like to understand the issue of filter routing, what is the difference between pre eq and post eq? Except for the side chain you explained, I wonder in which cases it is better to put the filter post eq. I usually have in order the filter-Eq-Comp but I don't know why and when is useful have the filter post eq. Thank you if you can answer me ;)
My SSL channel strip is the CLA Mixhub. However it is too CPU hungry and I only use it on my mix bus or when self-mastering. I tend to use just EQ strips like Neve or API and standalone comps like 1176 and LA2A.
plugin alliance SSL 9000J brings new options to my channel ins, or even for parallel processing of chans/groups. it has that combination of clarity and character that suits many applications.
No, you can't map plugins with the Console 1, you control the plugins available inside the main Console 1 plugin. Console 1 has it's version of the SSL 4000e, which I use on a regular basis
@@mixdownonlineit is possible, but only in Reaper using CSI (controller surface integrator). In this case you can't use anymore softube's console 1 plug-in,which is a big drawback... It's because the display one software (visual of the hardware on screen) takes the lead on any midi transmission from the controller, so you have to disable it. Thanks for the video, it's great!
Hi Chris, I use the SSL EV2 Channel-strip most. I love the Sound. I also use the SSL E + G Cannel . All Channel-strips come from Waves. Nice Vid, greats from Germany
Hi Chris. I currently have Rode NTH100M headphones that I use for PC and I use them with Soundblaster G3. I am also looking for a headphone for listening to music with my phone outside. If I consider the weather conditions, in-ears seem more suitable to me. It can also be over-ear, of course I would like to hear your suggestions. For in-ears, I have Truthear Zero Red and Nova in mind. For over-ears, I don't know whether to get wired or wireless. If I get wired, I like Verum1. I don't know what else! My maximum budget is 350 dollars and I can't go above that. Naturally, I need to get a DAC for such good headphones. Again, I have Questyle M12i, Fiio Ka5, Eversolo H2 in mind. Again, I am open to suggestions. I would be glad if you can help me choose.
Hey Chris, thanks for this great review and your amazing channel! I love these SSL emulations from SSL Oxford. It’s also great when you have the UCI Hardware. But now your dream come true - UAD SSL Version and the UAD SSL G Bus Comp is now native with a special feature. Have a great weekend 👍
The SSL 4K-B comes free with the SSL UC1 controller and ever since I purchased it, SSL have been trying to get me to get the 4K-E plug-in. This video has given me food for thought but I haven't really played with 4K-B yet - anyone know the major differences?
@Iceleben yeah that expired months ago and I didn't have time to test everything out! As I bought UC1, UF1, UF8 & SSL 12 I had, theoretically, 21 months combined free access to their plugins - alas I could only use 1 offer of 6 months!

You're welcome!
Excellent tutorial. You have a wonderful teaching style. I learned a bunch. Thank you for taking the time on this, Chris :)

My favourite SSL plugin is the drum strip. So easy to use it feels like a cheat code.
Lol, love it!
Kazrog true iron is great for bass low end. Makes it thick and translates on smaller speakers. BB Tubes for the mid range.

Plugin Alliance all the way for me, Baby!
Same here, I have their MEGA subscription and everything, even used the SSL plugins on some of my songs.
Can't go wrong with this one!
Hi Chris, Could you explain us how did you connect the SSL 4000 E Plugin with Bertom EQ Curve Analizer?
Insert Bertom on a track, insert whichever eq plugin you want to analyze on the track, then insert another instance of Bertom onto the track

As far as I know, the orange circuit is a passive EQ - so basically similar to the classic Pultec Style EQs

This SSL emulation has a Width Mode you can put to "High", which might emulate this.

Heard that uad has native version now
Uad has orange one too
Brown sounds natural, Black tight, Orange thick.
Good way to describe the differences :)
I think softube has the orange circuit on Console 1 EQ emulation , I'm pretty sure
It actually has the Black Circuit, I use it often since I have the C1 Channel Controller

I have all of solid state’s strips but man ol man I’m waiting for Uad to make theirs go native 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You're not the only one waiting Lol!
It finally happened! Uad native is here! @mixdownonline I would love to see a comparison between UAD native and this SSL original.

Btw, your description says sll..
Good thing it wasn't the title 😅

Saying all EQs are the same is an idiotic take (I have no idea who you’re referencing).
