I recorded a lot of film scores on the 4000 in New York and then scores like "Three Kings" on the 9000J (mostly at Warner scoring in Burbank). For my needs, the 9000J is light years ahead of the 4000 for clarity and flexibility. Thanks for this video!
This is my favorite SSL plug in. I own the Waves and UAD versions but BX just captures the warmth/grit/character more than the others. I use it on everything.
A few weeks ago I mixed multitracks from the academy, 72 channels, and on each instance the 9000J, it sounded so good in a fraction of time, btw if you use this many tracks, and you press the random button you get a full console. The only thing that costed more time was adding the plugins on each track. So the experiment went very well. And at the end the Townhouse Buss compressor. Since you did this review I use this plugin on some tracks, where I need a combination from gate, compression and EQ, my first choice is always this plugin. Even I have all the SSL plugins and other channel strips in my toolbox. Plugin Alliance nailed this one for sure. And thanks again to provide multitracks, so I and many others who can exercise mixing skills.
I know this is kinda an old video at this point, but I recently got into the SSL-plugins after sticking with API for a long time. The Brainworks seem to have created a great version. To me it sounds a lot cleaner and clearer than what the Waves and the UAD SSL-types I've tried. Great demo, Warren. Also, that girl in the first song can really sing. It's so refreshing hearing a powerful female vocal that's not just a little girl whisper washed in a ton of reverb. This woman had power and freaking attitude, LOVE IT!
I'm one of the 10 lucky winners from last year's giveaway. I've been recording acoustic guitar and vocal projects primarily and I use the plugin almost every time. Reviewing this video after a year is quite helpful, especially concerning its use on other instruments. Thanks again
I've got the BX 4KG, 4KE, N console and several others from Dirk (Black Box HG2, Masterdesk, SPL Transient Designer, Solo, etc.). They make excellent plugs. Consistent, focused, and very musical...just what any producer needs in a plugin. Would love to add the 9K to the toolkit. Thanks Warren, Dirk, and SSL!
I have been working in the box for a few years, as a hobbyist, the sound improvement you achieved from the 9000 plugin is amazing, squashed and wrongafied perfectly, I am sold, but remembering you would have recorded the tracks super sonically pleasing. NICE WORK super impressed. I better release some of my many songs, currently only have 2 & in the last 2 years I have embraced the wrongafi
Honestly channel strip plugins is just best thing ever. I can't imagine myself loading up a separate eq, compressor and gate for almost every drum channel - i value my time, even on quarantine.
I just bought this plug-in. Interesting story…. In 2003 I had aspirations to become a mixing engineer/producer. I called around to studios in Chicago and talked with their engineers. At the time they all seemed a bit jaded about the home studio craze that was just starting up. “Don’t get into studio work because so many people are trying to build home studios. But they all sound like garbage.” Is exactly what I was told by all the studios. That honestly lead me to reconsider and I ended up in the corporate world. I wonder if the same people in 2003 think the plug-in’s of today are good. Plug-ins have come very far from the early 2000’s and there are more and more engineers using plug-in’s over hardware. You can now get a $300 Focusrite AI, and a Neumann TLM 103 and produce radio ready vocals with plug-ins. Wasn’t that way back then. Plus drum samples from Superior Drummer or other.??… everything has really been taken up a tenfold of notches.
I use a different brand’s E but all of these SSL plug ins are great. Highly recommend for anyone working in the box. I use them on probably 80% of my tracks
Nice video! This is my new go to Channelstrip plugin! To be honest you didn't even try (at least not in the video) E settings on eq and also this little thd knob next to V-Gain which adds some odd harmonic distortion that is disabled by default on Bx_Console SSL9000J, but enabled on Bx_Console SSL4000E and G, so if you want to get closer to a 4000 sound you should check them out as well. Also tbh this dynamics section is way better than in other models from Bx consoles 4000E and G, and the peak button next to ratio is great! Well done Brainworx and Michael, cheers!
The proper(perhaps best) way to use the TMT channel emulations is to insert the effect on EVERY channel across your mix, then for each channel select a different tolerance modeling number(TMT) up to 72 channels. There should be an option to automatically assign the channels when doing this. The 72 emulations are to give you the subtle differences in each physical channel strip like a real mixer does. In a physical console, while every channel is built identically, they are still physical parts and thus can have tiny differences in circuitry/response. The channel emulations will produce a cumulative effect. The effect won't be realized using it on fewer channels.
There's a "One" button and an "All" button right below the word "Random Channel". You can instantly change all instantiations of the plugin in your mix to random TMT channel numbers, or just the one you're looking at. Nice feature, but I agree it would be better if it would automatically assign the next sequential TMT channel number automatically when you instantiate each time.
This thing loads default on any track I add on Ableton. Since I've moved to mostly eqing with this instead of graphic eqs my music sounds simply better. I flipping love this thing and clicking "all" to switch up the channels across the mix is always a delight.
Curse you Red Baron, I've been in one of those needed phases at the moment, where I've decided I have enough plugins, including channel strips, and considered it would benefit me more if I started to really get to know more of them better; limiting the palette of choice can be very creative way to get your ears working. Add to that, I've rather burnt up a lot of cash in the previous 3 months. So now when I get emails from all these plugin manufacturers, I delete them, happy in the knowledge that I'm saving money and I have enough to get good results. Then you come along with your silky high end and your enhanced low end, and I'm hearing it and saying to myself, 'wow, that does sound quite nice'. All of a sudden, I get gear-envy, again, and think, I'd like that. You're ruining my plugin detox. Stay well, stay safe
Haha I hear you my friend! This is a pretty darn good plug in isn't it! Don't you just love how fast things are moving? Everything is getting better and better and cheaper and cheaper!
Thank you for this review Warren ! I own all Plugin-Alliance/Brainworx consoles and love them all, especially the SSL 4K E, G. I got this 9000 J the minute is was out. One thing me and some others weren't certain about in the past is how well they were able to emulate the COMPRESSOR section of the board, especially the F (fast attack) and threshhold slammed, where the hardware really responded differently than the plugin (shoot out tests videos on youtube). Here in this short demo you actually did slam it for a second and it sounded incredible ! Could you just comment as to how well, in your opignon, they were able to emulate the compressor section on this SSL 9K J ??? As for the rest, it sounds amazing. I can hardly wait to mix and produce with this new console. Keep up the great work and videos and everything you are doing for we thank you so very much !
Hi Mickey Mess Studios I love this plug in! Everything has that spank and sheen that expect from an SSL! It’s definitely a little more HiFi than my 4000, which is probably why R&B and Pop guys love it! I’m excited to try an even more detailed comparison of my console completely in hybrid!
Hey W, I have been mixing all my new songs on a 8 bus group system with the 9000, like drums, bass, guitars, keys and vocals, i grew up on analog desks, and this plugin gives me the vibes, sounds so good, but the compressor is interesting, I haven't found my way with it completly (it has its own thing) theres those other modes, is P like automatic ratio and F (those led light buttons) Fast release? other than that, I really love it, i don't have to do much, just shine and balance and shaping, all the work is done on the channels before it hits the 8 bus groups mostly, but essentially a 8x SSL mixer kinda approach, lets me tune into a great mix i feel so far...I really musically connect to the sound of it, the virtual circuits are neat. cool cool
@@Producelikeapro no worries, totally helps connect to the feeling of the music, really enjoying mixing with the 9000, your right, it is total vibes pretty much, cheers :)
Holy shit, I got the SSL 4000E and wasn’t sure about buying another SSL channel strip but this was totally worth it (especially on sale rn), what a gorgeous sound. I was just playing with it on drums and it blew me away how different this channel strip is compared to the 4000, but I’m very pleased. There’s def some magic in there. I think I might even like the 9000 more than the 4000 and that was probably one of my favorite plugins.
I like your videos so much! Anything you explain within music examples is a great lesson. One of my favorite video from your channel is the SSL BUS compressor comparison across the different plugins out there. I truly appreciate your work. Thanks!
It always seems to me that the SSL consoles really enhance 'big' drum sounds.I know that it is down to the mixer - dunno just seems 'boomier' when I find some big sound I like and then aha it was recorded and mixed on SSl console. Just love the sound
I've never heard anyone say smashing a 9000 sounds musical haha. Completely different console than the 4K I'm excited they did this, although I've been using the SSL 9000 K on my console-1 which is just beyond words for me personally.
Haha I hear you! I always hit my SSL pretty hard, however, when I say I hard, I mean occasional red light, if it's alleyways on it starts to sound 'spongey'.
Lovely as always warren ! It would be nice if you did a mix with it on every channel .like if it were your console to see if the 72 channel function is the same as yours , as you know exactly how it shall sound .Stay safe
Hi Warren I see you have the new SSL 9000 j console plugin, I use Reason 10.4 which has had a console based on SSL 9000k for many years now, although the 9000J looks like more options and analog modelling
Looove their stuff! It just sounds great! Sometimes I forget that the Brainworx stuff isn’t the real thing. I’m a total fan. Also a fan of your production techniques! Thanks for kicking ass!
I'm hyped for this. I have the Brainworx N console and the blue face SSL4000 ..the N console I'm blown away with. I like the Brainworks 4000 ...tolerance modelling. Wicked. I'm actually using Reason atm ....and it has an SSL mixer built in now as standard ...and the G bus.
Love it!!! I see many people put these types of plugins as the first plug-in in the chain… if I heard you correctly I think you have last in the chain? Care to breakdown the difference between doing one over the other? Or is this just a rare thing?
Warren hasn't responded yet so I will. When I'm using plugins on tracks that were not recorded in a professional studio, I like to pretend like there is a two-stage process. First the recording which in a professional studio would entail equalizers and compressors first. So typically I'll use an API or Neve equalizer going into something like a 1176, LA-2A, Distressor or dbx 160. One last effect I may try is saturation. Whether it be tube, transformer, opamp or something else, if attract demands a little bit more character then that's where a plugin like this will go in the chain. Finally, back in the day studios recorded to tape, which adds a little bit more compression and saturation. So after that plugin the SSL 9000J will go on.
Thanx for the vid Sir I really enjoyed the fact that you were having so much fun letting your soul do the work whereas others may say I'm pushing this too far
I havent downloaded the demo yet, but Im still very happy with the BX SSL 4000E and the Lindel 80 Series, Im curious to see if the 9000 will suit me better, but Im doubtful. We'll see :P Btw, Warren, did you check out the Purple Audio 1176 already? And P-A has quite a few interesting compressors, in my opinion.
Wow! Like on demand. Exactly what I was looking for. A guide to how you're thinking on the console. The philosophy I mean, not exact frequency settings etc that's up for me to learn. Wow! Now I can go try these ideas on my different console emulations ie harrison mixbus32c, ssl's, neves and what not. Thank you.
Amazing video. The track is cool, it reminds me of the main song of the girls' band from the movie 'Freaky Friday' haha. SSL-9000J is insane. I crank the THD and turn the E-setting on every single time I use it. Cheers!
Great video - thanks, very informative, though it cost me! Mind if I ask what reverb you used on the kit on the 1st song (if your memory can reach back there!), I liked it very much..!
I've been using Brainworx strips for a solid year now and can't live without them. Their N console as well as the new Lindell 80 through Plugin Alliance is absolutely mind blowing. I tend to place the consoles first in the chain, but now I'm curious if placing it last would be a better option. What are your thoughts or recommendations here? Cheers from Canada!
As always your videos are awesome. Thanks for all the great stuff you share. I wonder though isn't he whole point of an analog desk more about workflow and speed? Sure, a plugin may sound like a console channel but you won't be able to replicate the speed and general overview of your mix that you get with a physical console sitting in front of you. Having said that I wonder why we still use analog interfaces on computer screens ? As someone who actually works on a real console does this make your life easier or would it be better if you had an interface where you can see the eq curve and frequency analysis etc...
Just purchased this and the *AMEK* *9099* for 29.99 each. This is the price on Plugin Alliance's website or on Sweetwater That's over *700.00* *Dollars* in regular retail value for 60.00 bucks. Can't go wrong.
So, would you run one of these on almost all tracks, if you want compression, per-say in the snare? That sounds like a lot of processing power issues. Would love to know how you deal with that!
Eacy C I would use it exactly like I would on a 24 channel console, summing inside the computer then outputting to 16 or 24 channels through the plug in!
Produce Like A Pro Bob Ross has a tendency to make people feel good without even having to try! You do the same Warren :) they play bob rosses show on a tiny old tv at my favorite taco place in Portland lol
Cammy Sinclair, Not really, a good mix engineer can make whatever he/she is using sound great. Having a good pair of ears is much more important than having the latest and greatest plugins.
Thanks for this, Warren. Watching on a Thursday morning before my wife wakes up. 😂 I’ll be itching to go play with a mix all day now (I have the trusty ole’ Waves SSL4000 stuff). Saw some things in your video here that I want to try, specifically the way you were dealing with the bass, and I want to see if I can overdrive the Waves SSL Channel strip like you did here. I never tried that even though I’ve had the plugins for years. Today we’ll see. Cheers from Prague!
Have you looked at the Console 1? Curious what you think of the 4000e and the 9k on there? I recently did a quick video comparing the Console 1 4000e and the British Class A and found the Class A to be to my liking. Curious? You can find it on my channel, which I won't advertise here :)
I just want to say thanks for providing a diversion from the current events. It’s so relaxing sitting back with a cup of tea and watching your videos. I always learn something and your stories and experience that you share make my day.
If you could recreate any console in a plugin, which one would it be?
A toft console emulation would be nice!

Thank you for responding I get it now!
This Plugin is amazing... each of the BX SSL emulations are brilliant and this one just adds to that amazing collection thank You Plugin Alliance
Thank you Warren for all that you give us.
Hi Geo Zero you’re very welcome my friend!
Thanks Warren! Have you tried the brainworx focusrite console? How does it compare to this one?
Great stuff Warren, gonna have to look into this one. Got the 4000 G but might have to trial this one. Thanks
Great demo Warren, thanks for sharing!

That was a joy to watch. And hear.

Now that was a video! Using a plug in and actually making the mix better! Others should watch and learn!
Thanks ever so much Darlene!!
9000 J plugin just went on sale. Thinking I'm getting it. A chance to create some DAW templates again for me too.
I havent downloaded the demo yet, but Im still very happy with the BX SSL 4000E and the Lindel 80 Series, Im curious to see if the 9000 will suit me better, but Im doubtful. We'll see :P
Btw, Warren, did you check out the Purple Audio 1176 already? And P-A has quite a few interesting compressors, in my opinion.
Fantastic! Thanks ever so much for sharing Maarten!
love how it sound
Hi Dilla Oniel yes, wonderful!!
@@Producelikeapro you mentioned regarding the SSL compression that is has an auto gain built in is this right?
Wow!! thanks for this!!! stay safe Plapers!!
Thanks ever so much Milton!!
I have the Brainworx Focusrite SC and Brainworx bx_console N which are awesome - hope I will win the SLL
That THD - now I want to look at all my other plugins to see how many screw graphics are actually controls.
Ray Robinson haha I hear you!!
So many of them lol even on the Knifonium synth
Love you Warren but on the expander you need to use the fast attack or you're "eating" the transient. all the best!
Definitely if you want the initial peak! However, I like what it's sounds like that!
All the best. Always learning eheh. Stay safe!
Easy MIX definitely! Always learning!!
Thank you.
Hi Jonas Franck thanks ever so much my friend! You Rock!! I’m so glad to be able to help!!
Amazing video. The track is cool, it reminds me of the main song of the girls' band from the movie 'Freaky Friday' haha. SSL-9000J is insane. I crank the THD and turn the E-setting on every single time I use it. Cheers!
love everything made by BX. wish I had more to spend during their recent 30 dollar sale!
Hi Harmony Smurf wonderful!!
This is the price on Plugin Alliance's website or on Sweetwater
That's over *700.00* *Dollars* in regular retail value for 60.00 bucks.
Can't go wrong.
I love your videos! Informative, fun, inspiring… You make music feel accessible!!
I think it’s safe to say that he is the Bob Ross of mixing.
Justin Audia haha I’ve only seen photos! Growing up in the UK I never saw his show!
Produce Like A Pro Bob Ross has a tendency to make people feel good without even having to try! You do the same Warren :) they play bob rosses show on a tiny old tv at my favorite taco place in Portland lol
Amazing sounding plugin! and giving away 10!?!? Gasp! =o
Thanks ever so much Eric!!
" It's quite disgusting..in a really cool way " Woop. Yes Siree.
haha thanks ever so much Pat!
I have the G. Should I have bought the E? And now this? Just buy everything!
Haha there's always something new and great!
Very nice work here.
Thank you.
Subscribed & belled.
Have you looked at the Console 1? Curious what you think of the 4000e and the 9k on there? I recently did a quick video comparing the Console 1 4000e and the British Class A and found the Class A to be to my liking. Curious? You can find it on my channel, which I won't advertise here :)
Hi Blades Music would love to try it! Haven’t had any contact with the company yet! Would love to!!
I just want to say thanks for providing a diversion from the current events. It’s so relaxing sitting back with a cup of tea and watching your videos. I always learn something and your stories and experience that you share make my day.
Hi Robert Latzer thanks ever so much! That comment means a lot to me! I really relate to having a cuppa! Haha
Do you use any Slate digital plugins?
Have you done any videos on their stuff?
Have you ever worked with or give a listen to Reasons"s SSL 9000? curious about your opinion - thank you, love the channel

Great sounding plugin
Jason Simmons yes! Agreed 100%!

Hi Warren why dont you try Kush Audio plugins for your great tutorials, thanks for all great job!
Hi Soe Win would love too! Marvellous idea!!
When will the winners be picked?
I will test sounds between PA,UA and WAVES ......SSL...thank for the info
I know UA and Waves only have 4000 SSL but it will still be fun to compare
