The story of Bill Nye inventing the ballet shoes is actually pretty interesting. He went to a ballet company to do a show about bones and muscles and realized that many of the women, most who were only in their early 20s, had already had 3 or 4 surgeries on their feet because ballet is so rigorous and demanding on the body.
He realized that when they went on their toes, it caused major stress to the feet. He also thought, “the valet shoe hasn’t changed in centuries. I can fix that”. He then created a shoe that basically has a “toe box” instead of coming to a point like previous shoes. The tow box then had an upper and outer sole which supports the toe, foot, and ankle when the ballerina does a plié.
He also holds patents for a device that guides a baseball throw, a magnifying glass made by filling a plastic bag with water, and a digital abacus.

Just have to say, while a flamethrower may sound good in a zombie apocalypse, but it probably won’t stop a zombie immediately in its tracks or kill it quickly, which means you just end up with flaming zombies chasing you instead of regular ones lol

That's exactly what I thought. It would be a great weapon against humans, but it is even worse then fists against creatures that don't feel any pain. So you will just end up with flaming zombies wanting to give you a hug.

That and refilling those is not an easy task. Plus the excessive heat from it, you would not want to use it long term. Even wearing full leathers, you'll get fatigued so quickly.

The only real way I could see a flamethrower might be useful in a zombie apocalypse would be as an area weapon...
Let's say you have a large number of zombies contained but don't see the containment lasting more than a few hours/a day. If you can catch their clothing on fire it would quickly spread through the group, literally cooking the zombies...
Depending on the way the zombies animate this should disable them

    • @J0hnDoe89
      @J0hnDoe89 2 роки тому +9

It all depends on the situation. If you're face-to-face with the zombies, it indeed will not help that much. If you would use it as a wall defense mechanism by using either a flamethrower through the wall or molotovs thrown into a group (more effective), it's a great tool

The half-life of U238 has to be on the order of the age of the Earth. It's a naturally-occurring isotope. When you hear about "enriching uranium", that means filtering out the U238, the significantly more common isotope, to increase the concentration of U235 for use in fission reactors and, if enriched further, fission bombs. For it to be minable, it has to exist in the earth and for that to happen, it can't have all decayed. The next largest answer was in the millions, meaning there would have been 1,500 half-lives since the formation of the planet which means you'd be left with (1/2)^1500th of the original mass. I tried to put that in perspective by setting an example of how much would be left after 1,500 half-lives if the entire planet was U235 when it formed, but all calculators I tried all gave me an answer of a flat 0. So I tried with the mass of the Sun. Same thing. So I lowered the number of half-lives until I got an actual number. I found that if an object the mass of the Sun was made of pure uranium-235, after 1,000 half-lives you'd be left with one googol^2.5th (1/10^250) a single U235 atom. That's an absurdly small mass, *orders of* orders of magnitude smaller than the smallest fundamental particles we know of, *and the full answer is divided by 2 another 500 times*. So a half-life of a billion or so years is the only one that makes any sense mathematically. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

    • @Jake-eb7fs

Glad someone was willing to explain it. I’m a nuclear engineer and just wanted to clarify that U-235 is what’s needed to make a bomb, not U-238. A bomb would need to be roughly 90% enriched which is why nuclear power plants (in the US) can’t become bombs

    • @RobertMorgan

@@Jake-eb7fs "which is why nuclear power plants (in the US) can’t become bombs"
They could be if we upgraded to newer-gen Fast Breeder reactors and fueled them with old-tech fission reactor waste products. Although, plutonium as weapon fuel requires a much higher level of technical sophistication, whereas U-235 just needs to be, well, put together to wreak havoc. The Manhattan project didn't even test the uranium 'gun' design, it was so simple and reliable they just dropped it on Hiroshima and knew it would work. Trinity, the first bomb test, was to prove that plutonium implosion would work, far harder and more complex.

Those zombie apocalypse weapons were so wrong if we're talking real world examples.
#1. Revolver. Ammunition readily available, very low maintenance, fairly accurate to 15 yards with minimal training or practice, great way to off yourself if you get into an impossible situation so you don't have to experience being gnawed on. Downside, reloading is awkward without a speedloader, and you might blow your fingers off if you try to hold it like people hold a more conventional magazine-fed pistol in movies. Gunshots will attract more zombies though, so use sparingly.
#2. Bazooka. Great AoE potential or for creating openings in crowds or barricades. Downside, very rare ammunition, worse than useless in indoor settings, though would be passable as a bludgeon in close range, actual bazooka explosions are kind of underwhelming, ammunition is quite heavy so you'd have few shots, and they would be so loud they'd attract every zombie within a mile.
#3. Butcher knife. Durable, sharp, reasonably light, quiet, made for cleaving meat and bone. Downside, melee range and very little reach. Only really good because the heft can reliably cleave a skull.
#4. Chains. Reasonable blunt force, great as a restraining tool for securing doors or for creating tripping hazards. Downside, melee range and awkward to use as a weapon, kind of noisy with its rattling. Most beneficial as a tool when fleeing, rather than as a weapon.
#5. Samurai sword. Very sharp, decent reach, weeb points. Downside, quite fragile, fairly high maintenance, very little heft so low knockdown potential, very dependent on footwork. Kill Bill or that one lady in The Walking Dead are not good examples for their efficacy in removing limbs or heads. A piece of sharpened rebar would be better since it would be much less likely to bend or break.
#6. Board with a nail in it. Okay blunt force, able to modify into something more in line with a baseball bat with some effort, which would probably be #2/3 if it were an option. Downside, awkward on the outset, splinters, semi-fragile, okay for knocking down but not for killing.
#7. Flamethrower. Reasonable AoE potential, assuming zombies give a shit about fire, but will likely debilitate them somewhat if it chars the muscles in their legs or burns out their nose/eyes, making it harder for them to find you. Gasoline is fairly plentiful on the outset, but will become more rare and less useful as the apocalypse carries on. Downside, fuel tank is very heavy, likely to get yourself caught in a fire hazard.
    #8. Fists. Duh.

    • @Takkunda

Bazooka is too high. Where are you going to find a bazooka ammo? If you are using it for utility ie: explosions you can do the same with a propane tank so its useless as utility.

    • @Koop784
      @Koop784 2 роки тому +1

@@Takkunda My presumption with you finding a bazooka in the first place was that you would find 1 or 2 shots with it.
And the advantage of the bazooka is purely ranged demolition. If you want to blow up a propane tank or set tnt or something, you need to set it first up close and then retreat. That, and it's actually quite difficult to make a propane tank explode. Just shooting one won't do it.

Uranium-238 is the most common isotope found in nature. It can't really be used for nuclear power or weapons. The isotope used for weapons and power plants is 235 and any 238 used needs to be enriched to the point of being 235.

Good luck trying to find any bazooka ammo. Military stopped using that years ago. Dick's Sporting goods in recent years hasn't had much in revolver ammo (.38spl, .357, .45, etc).
Also with revolvers, it's not just 6 rounds. You can find them in 5, 6, 7 shot and some have more but those are in .22lr and .22 Magnum.
A flamethrower is so impractical. They are quite heavy. The heat from them even with protective equipment is quite extreme. The leathers to protect you will fatigue you fast. Plus trying to find gasoline or diesel then a gelling agent to make it is not easy.
I'd rather take a revolver myself. You don't need a big caliber to take out zombies.

Uranium 238 is not used for Fission. It's first enriched, which means it's partially converted to Uranium 235, which has a much higher radiation level. U-235 is then used in reactor rods to perform nuclear fission. Though nowadays we prefer to use Thorium instead of Uranium, because it's very easy to stabilize in the event of a meltdown.

My two cents about the worst time for the Groom to leave: during the vows. It's suppose to be about how the two are devoted to the other and how much they love each other, so the image of the bride pouring her heart out to her soon-to-be husband, only for him to leave during it, hurts. :

U-238 is the natural isotope of uranium gotten from ores. U-235 is the fissionable isotope used in reactors and weapons. It is also found in ores but is only about 0.5%. This is what they mean by "weapons grade". It has been processed to increase the amount of U-235 to around 5%.

Just so people know, Bazookas and other launchers are not meant to be used against infantry by design. They are meant to penetrate the tough plating of armoured vehicles and bunkers. The explosion of a launcher such as the RPG or Law comes after the head of the rocket hits the metal or concrete (depending on the target). This means they would be a terrible choice in an apocalypse. Not to mention most are single shot.

Long story short, while the number of protons in an atom determine what element that atom is, the number of protons plus neutrons determines the isotope. Different isotopes can have slightly different properties, at least in terms of radiation and nuclear shite.
Uranium 238 is extremely common in nature. The more rare and short-lived isotopes are more useful, at least for now.

I woulda had flamethrower at 8, Its a very heavy rig and speed is important vs a zombie plus your only setting them on fire, I don't see why that would kill a zombie instead of a slow moving undead now you have one with elemental attacks :3, fists then chains, bazooka at 5, 1 good shot then your just swinging an unwieldy heavy metal rod, 4 revolver, Just has ammo issues, 3 the knife, Reliable but risky, You gotta have some skill to use it, The 2x4, Big sticks have been a decent weapon since caveman days for a reason and nat the sword, Good weapon and should the blade break you could still use it as a knife

at 5 Gold Medals - as difficult as that can be - that payout every year for not just hundreds of deals (guranteed to be on cereal boxes, commercials of hundreds of items, etc) you would get 37500 x 5 = $187,500. Which is a lot, and a better reason to earn more gold medals than just nailing more guranteed hits on sponsorship deals.

  • @jdgovender900

Lol my chemistry degree flashed before my eyes for question 2.
I was answering the questions to myself. The 238 in Uranium is the number of protons and neutrons in that isotope of Uranium. An isotope is when an element can exist with a different number of neutrons. Like Carbon (has 3 isotopes), one isotope of carbon has 6 neutrons, another has 7 and the other has 8. Not saying that all elements have isotopes or that an element can have any number of neutrons.
And for the half life, there is/are formula(s) that were developed a long time ago that are used. There is a decay constant in it that will differ depending on what you are calculating for. How we came to know what to use to calculate for Uranium ... based on the history I read while studying and what I saw in the research labs, there's people who dedicate their lives to adding knowledge and improving how we work with things. That sometimes results into things like constants and formulas ... So there is someone who really spent some good time with Uranium, even though we cannot live long enough to see it with our own eyes
