Wow! So glad I just found this! I just ordered my first Weeks, for 2018, and these tips are genius!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. As a newbie, I now feel so much more prepared, and will be using almost every one of these tips! 🤗
Thanks for the tips! This is the first year I am using Hobonichi! I have the Weeks and the Cousin and they are a bit intimidating because they are so beautiful you don't want to mess them up!
I know the feeling--the Tomoe River is so luxurious! (I'm a fountain pen user so this paper is a joy to write on). I decided to pick up a second Hobonichi Weeks and I still have to get the A6 (had one last year and loved using it)--will share how I use them all in a future post. Thanks for watching! 😊
Thanks so much for great your tips! This will be my first year in the weeks.....and I will be puttting many of your ideas to work!!!!!Needed the help!!!!
I use the Japanese reference pages to test my knowledge of Japanese and then to learn terms and phrases that aren't covered in my Japanese classes. I also don't have a problem with using the Japanese calendar system, since I'm familiar with their days of the week and months of the year. The only thing that gives me pause sometimes is the weekends at the end, but I get back in the groove of it once I'm using a planner everyday again. I simply freehand it in the first few weeks as a reminder of the weekend being there, if need be. These are the tips I would add: 1) Get Hobonichi's cover for the Weeks ($4.75 for the basic clear version). It will not only protect your Weeks better, but also has a pen loop for keeping a pen exactly where you need it the most. It also has a tab at the front that can be used as a bookmark, and the inside flaps are great for keeping stickies or other loose papers tucked in to the book. Bonus: It's plastic and non-stick, so it can be used on the Weeks journals you get in subsequent years. Cost: $4.75 - $7 at Jetpens, but available only for a limited time starting in October. Note: To use the pen loop, you need a pen that has a good clip. A Biro or other such cheap stick pen won't do the job. Fountain pen users should know that most of those pens won't fit in the loop, but thinner pens like the Sheaffer 100, Waterman Hemisphere, Diplomat Magnum and Wing Sung 601 will. 2) Get Hobonichi's "page keeper" accessory ($6.25 at Jetpens). You can use it for its stated purpose, but it has a far better one for the Weeks in particular: As a strap to keep the book closed when not in use. It's also great for keeping a pen even more secure in the loop. Like the cover, this product is designed for multiple years of Weeks use. 3) Get a shitajiki (pencil board), especially if you write so hard that you can feel the writing on the back of a page--you'll be murder on Tomoe River if you write that hard on normal paper. You can make your own with cardstock, but Hobonichi makes one that is a matte plastic and has a tab at the top that lets it double as a bookmark. Because it's plastic, it, too, will last through multiple Weeks that you use. Totally worth the $4.75 price tag.
Thanks for the tips, Aquaria! 👍 I originally held off on buying the accessories until I knew for sure the Weeks would work out--the ones you mentioned are the ones I'm interested in the most. And how wonderful that you use the reference pages to practice your Japanese; I've always wanted to study it given my great admiration of the culture. Thanks again for commenting and for watching!
Hey Melinda! Great idea; I've added it to my list of future videos. Sometimes we assume that others already understand certain planning techniques but that's not always the case. Check back for more information and thanks again for watching! 😊
Hi there! Basically the monthly index log is a “cheat sheet for the month”. Sometimes we try to remember when something took place, for example-started/canceled a subscription, mailed a payment, received something important in the mail, or followed up on an ongoing issue. Instead of trying to scan all your daily/weekly pages for the past few months, you create a one page cheat sheet, for each month At the end of each month, list any day (e.g. 1st, 3rd, 12th, 22nd) a brief description of the activity/action/event; to make things even easier to find, use color coding. If nothing important happened on a specific day that month, then skip it. Once you find what you’re looking and identified the month/day when it happened, THEN you can turn to that page to get the rest of the details. Lastly, if you ever decide to throw away old planner pages, you can still hang on the index logs to keep some sort of record if needed. I use a monthly coded index log for both personal and work to find things quickly. HTH and thanks for watching! 😊📚
Hi Jennifer! It's for the regular Weeks. My understanding is that the only differences are that the Mega Weeks has a lot more note pages in the back and some of the 'extra' Japanese pages might be different so these tips still apply to both. HTH!
Hi Meg! Generally, I tend to agree--and I would pass--however I've become a huge fan of the Hobonichi books because of the Tomoe River paper--it's perfect for fountain pens, watercolor, markers, etc.--and the number of layouts packed into such a small package was extremely impressive (the 72 blank pages sold it for me). Given that the pros outweighed the cons (for me), I didn't mind making a few tweaks. 😉 Thanks for watching!
Yeah, the point of Hobonichi is the special paper. It's completely unique. That's why so many Hobonichi users customize their books. There's no other product like it.
First time user for 2022 and these tips still resonate! Thanks

Can you explain more specifically about how you’re doing your habit tracking? I need to see an example or two so I get it. :)

where do you order the Hobonichi Weeks Planner?
Hi Stephanie! I ordered mine from Amazon (USA). Thanks for watching!
Is that the regular or mega weeks? Love that red :-)
Hi Jennifer! It's for the regular Weeks. My understanding is that the only differences are that the Mega Weeks has a lot more note pages in the back and some of the 'extra' Japanese pages might be different so these tips still apply to both. HTH!
Thank you! Love your videos!
If I had to do that much modification on a planner to make it work, I think I'd just buy something different.

+sunnymoon Agreed, that Tomoe River paper is a dream--and addictive! 😊
