Restoring an Abandoned Mechanical Keyboard for my Gaming Setup! (IBM Model M)

  • In this video I completely restore and bolt mod an abandoned IBM Model M that has been sitting since 1994 in an abandoned mental asylum that was repurposed into a data center in the late 1980s. After 4 months of using this keyboard, I have to say that the hype is real. This really is one of the best feeling keyboards out there and is a joy to type on. Glad I saved it, otherwise it would've either been destroyed when they take the building down or destroyed by vandals.

Also, yes im aware model m uses a membrane to register the keys. Majority of people accept buckling sping keyboards as mechanical.

DUDE! this video is my savior :) I had an old IBM Model M in my dads attic piling up dust for who know how long. I later found out that he had worked in IT for 20 years back in the 80's with a guy name Tom Gore. He told me I could have the keyboard and so now I'm here wanting to refurbish this old thing but not knowing how. I decided to search the internet for answers but with no results. So after 3 years I decided to come back to this project and to my surprise, stumbled upon this video. I am currently working on the project and will hopefully get it finished this time. Great video btw keep up the great content!

Dude! That's so awesome what you were able to do with that early Model M. I actually learned some stuff from watching your video. I had no idea electrical pain existed. I'm gonna get some to fix my Tandy keyboard I used in that video. Also that's a pro gamer move cleaning the whole keyboard with a high pressure water sprayer. I never thought of that. So much easier and faster! You should have seen my Tandy keyboard and my PS/2 when I first got them. They looked just as bad if not worse than your computer. Just didn't smell like piss.

If you don't have the right socket for those deep case nuts, you can take the barrel of a Bic pen, soften the end with the flame of a Bic lighter, then push it into the hole against the nut and the plastic will mold itself to the shape of the nut as it cools. You can then use it like a makeshift screwdriver to deal with those nuts.

I'm surprised that you were able to get it back in the shell after doing a bolt mod with the nuts under the steel plate. I modded my circa 1992 PS/2 Model M a couple years ago and had to use very flat head screws and run them up from below with the nuts on top of the plastic deck. Otherwise I didn't have enough clearance with the bottom row of nuts and the steel sheet wouldn't fully seat in the shell. I wonder if there was a manufacturing revision somewhere along the line that slimmed it down a bit?

How much will you take for that keyboard I want it?

A slight correction - model m is using buckling spring not mechanical switches... So I don't think it's right to call it 'mechanical'

I lubed a few keys but it's not the same as lubing a regular mechanical keyboard. It actually makes this one worse. It just feels a bit mushy. Gets rid of that clunky feeling.

Those were an HP monitor and an acer. Got rid of both and replaced with a Sceptre 35inch curved monitor
