    Hey man I really want your opinion. I have watched all your videos. Currently I’m upgrading my light. I have a 10 gallon nuvo 10. My light options are between a brand new kessil A80 tuna blue or a used AI prime 16hd. Prime was used for 1.5 years on 40%.
    I’m trying to grow a zoa garden, with a Duncan, hammer, leather, mushroom and a chalice coral. (Probably getting rid of the chalice for a torch)

    • @TOMReefer
      @TOMReefer  Рік тому +1

      Hi GSupreme, thanks for watching my vids! I like both lights. However the 16 HD gives you more control. The A80 has great shimmer and is very good, but you don’t get the color control you do with the Prime. Also the AI app is really helpful. The 1.5 years shouldn’t be an issue, unless you can visibly see burnt cels. 👍🏻

    I’m about to go crazy with water parameters.. okay I have a 10 gal tank with mostly zoas, leathers, a Duncan, a hammer, fuzzy mushroom, and gsp. My parameters are at Mag 1190 Alk 8 Cal 400. Is this okay to get good growth? I haven’t seen much. Tanks has had corals for 6 weeks. I’m using Red Sea blue bucket salt. I’m trying to keep it simple and not dose. Should I consider a different salt mix? Or something simple like kalkwasser. (6 weeks isn’t a lot of time but should I see something? Gsp has spread a little bit)

    • @TOMReefer
      @TOMReefer  Рік тому +1

      Hi GSupreme, 6 weeks isn’t much time at all. In most cases corals, especially LPS take quite a bit longer. Zoas can take a while to get started, then grow more rapidly. Mushrooms are slow growers in the beginning. Your Parameters are fine for growth. You might consider adding a little Kalkwasser to your ato and see if that helps. 👍🏻

    Tom: I keep two fish only saltwater fish tanks (a 90 and a 45) - Question: Can I rinse my ceramic bio-media in treated freshwater as part of my regular maintenance, or will the freshwater rinse kill the saltwater beneficial bacteria. Typically I rinse in my media in my tank water when I do my weekly water change, but I would really like to know if saltwater bacteria is that delicate that a freshwater rinse to remove funk from ceramic media would kill said bacteria?

    • @TOMReefer
      @TOMReefer  Рік тому +1

      Hi Steven, rinsing the ceramic bio media will kill off the bacteria. How much, I’m not really sure. However depending on how much bio media you have it may not affect the overall lack of beneficial bacteria in your system. This is why the ceramic bio media has not been used as much anymore, it collects detritus and cause a raising of nutrients. You might try removing them a little at a time altogether. Unless they are fish only tanks with no live rock. Then you would need them. 👍🏻😊

    Hey, wanted to ask a question. I've ordered a dragonete from biota and that hatchery food I've seen you use. Assuming the fish eats prepared foods will he do ok in my 53g tank? He may have to compete for live pods with a melanarus wrasse so I want to make sure he will get enough food from prepared feedings..
    Also, been looking for a coral I can add to the top of the rockwork what are your thoughts on a candelabra? I'm not ready for acros but thought that may be a nice addition for now.

    • @TOMReefer
      @TOMReefer  Рік тому +1

      Hi Nick, The slow sinking pellet sink to the bottom. When I first got my mandarin, I used a turkey baster to shoot them directly on the bottom. He should come over and sample. As far as competition with your other fish you should be OK the slow sinking pellets are very nutritional and he’ll eat quite a bit of those and that should be enough. Mine was in my 20 gallon with probably minimal population of pods in the display area and he survive for years. Still going strong and fat😃👍🏻

    • @nickgarcia1292
      @nickgarcia1292 Рік тому

      @@TOMReefer how many times a day would you do that with the turkey baster if you don't mind

    • @TOMReefer
      @TOMReefer  Рік тому

      @@nickgarcia1292 hi Nick, ofc I don’t mind😃 that’s what my channel is all about. I fed 2 times daily, but don’t over do it with the amount. SA Pellets should be the .5mm size. Enough for him to forage around them for about 1 minute. Also turn your flow pumps off so the stay put in his area of feeding. You’ll find after a few weeks, when you feed the other fish their fair, the mandarin will go to the spot you’ve been putting them in. Stick to the same spot. 👍🏻np on any more questions 😊

      @@TOMReefer I'm under the impression since biota raises these fish in a biosecure area I shouldn't have to worry about parasites, in your opinion is a qt needed or get him into the dt as soon as acclimated? I can qt the fish just want to choose whichever will be less stressful for him

    • @TOMReefer
      @TOMReefer  Рік тому

      Well, if you’re set up to QT, it might be a good idea, not so much for parasites, but for ease in getting it fed without any competition. A few weeks in a safe QT is a good option. If you keep your QT salinity and temp the same as the display, you can transfer without any acclimation. Just net and carry over to your display.
