Absolutely not! Do not carry your license, registration, and proof of insurance on your visor. Keep your license on you, in your physical possession when driving and as a legal form of ID. If and when you get pulled over, gather your items and have them ready but do not give them to the officer until (1) they identify themselves, (2) they state the reason you were pulled over, and (3) they ask you for your info. The officer has already run your plate as he pulled you over and has a good idea who he/she is dealing with. All of your previous police interactions, possibly your criminal history if applicable, anything dispatch decides to tell the officer as they run your plate or whatever their department's in car computers access. Depending on what State in which you are being pulled over, the officer may or may not be legally allowed to ask you if you are carrying a weapon. If the officer asks you anything except for your information, simply state "I don't answer questions". Every single thing the officer is doing is to collect evidence against you in a potential charge or citation. Admit to nothing, apologize for nothing, but be polite and direct.
I've also found it beneficial to the officer's safety (and mine) to provide my concealed permit along with my license, registration, and proof of insurance. That way, the officer knows you may be armed but you're not making a big deal of it. It's merely a notification to that officer.

But you might lose your license doing that, it happened to me. Now I just carry a small wristlet type purse and always have it beside me. Then I ask the officer if it is okay to retrieve my license and I allow them to watch me while I pull it out (slowly). Also your insurance could be on your phone so have that handy as well.

This was a fantastic, well-rounded, and highly relevant video. Over my long years (some of those living in a rough area) I have personally encountered both the 'bad cop' and 'good cop' in various situations and at the end of the day it comes down to *Mutual Respect.* In the 'bad cop' scenario, yes they are in the wrong, yes they are overstepping their authority, BUT if I choose to mirror that bad attitude one thing is absolutely guaranteed: it is going to get much worse for me, not them, and amplifying the encounter is self-destructive, at best. As mentioned in this video, if you cannot tamp down your own heat index (personal accountability) you should not be carrying a firearm; work on yourself with training and mitigating stress encounters and life then makes alot more sense.
Beyond this, reading through many of the comments on this page, they either chose to completely ignore all the common sense advice, or they are prime examples of the very people that good cops hate dealing with which eventually turns them into a bad cop because regular combativeness and hostility can sour even the best of people.

I had this exact situation happened to me a couple weeks ago. Except for my firearm was in a concealed Kydex holster in my center counsel of my truck. Upon retrieving my registration, I let the officer know that there was a firearm. He asked me if I had my concealed weapons permit although I do, it is not the law in Florida to have a concealed weapons permit to conceal a weapon in your vehicle. He then proceeded to tell me to exit the vehicle so he could retrieve the firearm. Then he proceeded to argue with me saying Florida is a three-step law I kindly disagreed and waited for a supervisor to arrive. Upon his research, he realized he was wrong. He was polite about it and apologized. The situation could’ve gone very differently if I wanted to be arrogant and argue with him. But I remained respectful and I received a respectful response. Police may not always be in the right, but it is their job to have these concerns. We should just remain respectful and 95% of the time we will get out of it with a satisfactory result for both parties.

The attitude of the police depends on where you live. Down here in Tennessee, they are trained better for interactions with legally armed citizens.
In all the years i have been carrying, i have been stopped a handful of times and every time but one the firearm wasnt an issue. I did have a young cop disarm me for a seatbelt ticket. The kicker about it was what he did with my firearm. He gave me the ticket, put the empty mag on the trunk, put the ammo in a plastic bag on the hood and placed the gun on the roof. He made me wait until he left before I could get my shit.

When asked for your license, tell the officer that it is right here with my CC permit. Then tell him that you have a weapon in your possession. The reason for the window down part way is that it would very difficult for me to try to shoot the cop with the window in that position.

Then they leave it in your trunk unloaded and you have to reload it after you leave. Just be as calm as possible and don't flip out so you don't get shot.

This is not hard, I’ve been pulled over a few times while carrying. 1st when the cops lights go on, use your blinker, stop Asap in a safe area, weather on the road shoulder or better in a parking lot if close. 2nd when stopped, put the vehicular in park and roll down the drivers window, turn the vehicle off put the keys where the office can see them, on the dash, or on the roof. 3rd put your hands on the steering wheel and make casual eye contact with the officer thru the side mirror while the officer walks up. 4th be polite, the office already knows you have a pistol license, he got that when he ran your vehicle license plate number, he knows you may be armed. 5th DON’T YELL I’VE GOT A GUN!!!. 6th When he ask for your license and registration and insurance, also hand him your carry permit. He / she will ask if your carrying, answer honestly, the officer is actually happy your A) licensed and B) happy your polite and honest, he /she knows your on their side. The officer will then tell you why they pulled you over then ask you to wait while they run their required checks and in my experience they come back and thank me for my cooperation, tell me why I was pulled over.. I have then had several next actions: I’ve been released with a have a nice day comment, been asked what I’m carrying ect.
By doing the above I’ve not received a ticket since I’ve been carrying.

      1) Cops don't necessarily know that you have a CC permit; it varies by state. In Georgia, that information does *NOT* come up when the car license plate is checked by the cop.
      2) If you are acting normal the cop may not even ask, so the conversation doesn't even go there at all. (I've been pulled over perhaps a dozen times in my life, and I've never been asked if I was carrying or had a permit). Unless your state law requires you to (some do, some do not; mine doesn't), don't offer that information unless you are asked, then answer only the question that they ask, don't offer any additional information. If they want to know more, they'll ask. Trust me on that.
Telling the cop up front that you have a gun and/or a permit *may* unnecessarily complicate your traffic stop; it will almost certainly elevate their adrenaline, and you don't want that. You don't know how they will react. Some cops might get nervous by you claiming to have a loaded firearm and want you to step out of the vehicle, possibly handcuff you, until they feel secure that you are not a deadly threat to them. The best thing to do is to stay calm, turn down the radio, roll down *both* windows (one night after being pulled over for a broken taillight, I rolled down my driver-side window, and the cop approached and tapped on my passenger window, scaring the hell out of me), turn on your inside dome light(s) if it's dark, then put both hands on top of your steering wheel and wait patiently, without moving around, for the cop to tell you what he wants you to do. Don't do anything unless he asks you to, and always be polite and reply "Yes sir" or "Yes ma'am".
The idea to to make them as comfortable with you as possible, and you do that by making sure they can see easily into your car and know where your hands are at all times. Only tell them about your firearm and/or permit if required by state law. Otherwise, if the cop wants to know, they will ask you. Really. Simple as that.

During the last 20 years of carrying here on the Peach State, I've been pulled over about 4 times, and even though I let them know I'm carrying, they really don't care as long as you keep it where it is. Good communication is key! BTW, they already know we're carrying, and they actually appreciate that. So the most honest you're with them, the easier it will go. Love and support the blue! These are good tips... I guess. As a committed and very religious carrier of concealed firearms, I don't think that it is any of the officer's business if I am carrying. Furthermore, as an active duty police officer, I assume that there is a gun in every vehicle I stop and I approach a vehicle accordingly. I never ask if they have a gun or where it is unless I have a reason to. The public has to understand that cops don't have the luxury of assuming anything in our line of work and cops need to respect peoples' privacy when concealing firearms. From my experience that can be accomplished by diligence on the part of the officer and understanding on the part of the citizen. Some officers may come off as edgy or too aggressive because their hand is on the holster or gun as they approach the car or because they ask the driver to put his hands on the steering wheel as they are approaching the window. Those are all completely reasonable things of an officer to ask. He is the one putting himself out there in a completely unknown situation and, just like us citizens, he wants to go home safely and he wants the interaction to go as smoothly as possible. Any good officer is going to approach the window cautiously, not because he is scared but because he is good, and when he gets to the window and is able to begin a conversation and gauge who and what he is dealing with then a good officer will change his demeanor and tactics accordingly.

It's the gun I cant see that I worry about... I wouldn't ever want to escalate a situation, or create a situation by over reacting or imposing too much force... If a Cop gets nervous then Citizens get extremely nervous, because the Cops are supposed to be Professionals with a cool head, not to get all freaked out if someone (innocent until proven guilty) has a firearm.. So reguarding the ar15 scenario: although i agree that u shouldnt keep ur ar on the dashboard of ur car, i dont fully agree with the the phrase “just because u can dosent mean u should” when it comes to carry. In florida we actually have open carry (contrary to what most people think). U are allowed to open carry as long as ur going fishing, hunting, camping. One day these guys wanted to educate the community on open carry in south beach by having a gathering where people would go fishing on the pier and open carry. Well people got nervous called the cops and the cops went to the pier with guns drawn.
So my point is if we dont excersise our rights people tend to, forget about them and with time our rights (although legal) may become percived as taboo. There was once a time in the US when people carried their guns openly and no one would give a rats ass because it was normal. Today people dont carry them openly (mainly cause its not permitted in moat states) but the states that allow (excluding texas) its still pretty taboo to do so and if anyone does, they will have the cops called on him/her and have to deal with law enforcement even if its legal. Because it becomes abnormal to do so in the eyes of ignorant people. polititians will use peoples “ignorance and feelings” to chip away at our rights and pass gun reform because ignorant people will support them. Then we lose our rights completly.

attiume yami , when people do unusual things, we look at them strangely. If you wear a parka on a hot beach, we’re concerned. If you sharpen your knives while you wait outside the church for it to open, we’re concerned.
You will absolutely lose the right to open carry if you keep making ordinary voters worried.
I was in a military surplus store the other day, waiting in line, and this jerk is in front of me, muzzle sweeping the whole store with a hunting rifle as he tells some stupid story.
I’m not going to confront someone for pointing a gun at me. I know from experience that people who don’t care about muzzle direction, think the rest of us are being sissies. He’s likely to point it at me at click the trigger to prove it’s not loaded. Mine is, then I just shot a man with an empty gun, which I didn’t know until I was already committed.
I carry every day, with a permit. I see one more idiot trying to disturb the peace showing off laws from when Indians might scalp you, and I would get behind an update to that law.

I have a question: Why would an LEO disarm a licensed concealed carrier, knowing (beforehand) they not only ARE licensed... but HAVE TO pass background checks, proving they aren’t criminals. If they had done anything that would make them unable to be licensed, they wouldn’t be in the system.
I get the LEO being cautious around anyone with a firearm, and I let the officer know before she/he says anything that I am carrying... then ask the officer how to proceed. But, I’m not registered a CCW permit holder, so they don’t know when they approach. If I WERE a lic holder, and thereby had passed all checks - showing I am a law abiding citizen, and pose no credible threat to anyone - why the need to remove me from my vehicle and/or put in handcuffs, and disarm me, to run my info?
Just a question. Not arguing with any of this advice, at all.

    • @elvisacosta6666
      @elvisacosta6666 4 роки тому +4

As a retired law enforcement officer (federal) I will say that between the time you received your CCW license and the time the officer stopped you, you could have committed a crime. The officer does not know this, therefore, for his safety and yours, he would "detain" you. In this example, by handcuffing you, whereby he/she limits your ability to harm them since your hands are restrained. Same holds true when he/she runs your vehicle. If you borrowed the vehicle from a friend, and there is a warrant for your friend's arrest, that you don't know about, and until the officer verifies your identity, he/she must take the necessary and safe measures to identify you, and in so doing, restrains you to that end. Keep in mind, the officer does not know you personally, and so, he must take every plausible measure to ensure his/her safety, as well as yours, as they can. Lastly, if the officer stops you, it means he/she had a reason to stop you, and thus makes his/her determination of action based on a plethora of variables. Hope this helps.

But there is an added apprehension for John Q Public, when detained/cuffed and unarmed. And just as there are bad people, I have known a few that let the badge get to their heads. Shouldn’t there be a protocol, maybe even federally implemented, so there aren’t any discrepancies in different jurisdictions? It seems to me (and many others) that it’s the differences in jurisdictions, that lead to further widening of the relationships between the two groups.

It is easy to hand driver license, registration with gun permit under your driver license at same time. That way you have produced all documents to police and notified the police of you having a gun without having to say I HAVE A GUN! reducing your chances of having an awkward moment because once you tell the officer he is going to ask for your gun permit and he is going to be on full alert after you say I have a gun, and then you have to go through the motions and it is awkward. Hands on steering wheel, etc, etc. You also reduce stress for both parties.

I've had 2 bad encounters with cops where i was pulled over but they both ended up working out fine..Why? Because i was Honest, chose my words, and was always kind...The old adage rings true if u are dealing with a good cop be nice, if u are dealing with a BAD cop be NICER...The two bad encounters i had was the first being i came upon a cop standing in/near the road having pulled someone over already...I slowed down swerved over to give extra room and proceeded on...He after finishing gets back into his cruiser RUNS me down about 7-10 miles down the road and proceeds to hit me with the lights, and it was after dark...I pull over immediately shut the car off, turn on the interior lights have my license and reg. ready before he gets to the vehicle and of course have all windows rolled down so he could fully see into the car...Now keep in mind i only make it 7-10 miles before he catches me, he comes up and goes someone called into 911 saying a car matching your description was driving erractic, and as i was behind u i say u crossed the yellow line a couple of times(BUT i wouldn't call that wreckless/erractic)... It was a total lie,no way within 7-10 miles someone called in on me in rural america at about 10 PM with it being very dark and then give an accurate description of my vehicle...He was a liar, which i never called him that i mostly kept my mouth shut and admitted to nothing, esp. seeing i hadn't done nothing wrong...He was just looking for tickets pulling random folks over to see what he could find...He decided since i done everything right, also very courteous to him, he tells me to have a good night and let's me go..If i had gotten smart, or just not done things exactly right to show i had nothing to hide i would've gotten a ticket based upon his lies...Then one time i was driving through my hometown at night, with a vehicle i had recently purchased that had tags from another county which i had bought out of town...Anyways the cop follows me to the edge of town hits me with the lights..Said i was swerving over the yellow line like 2 or 3 times,to which i never said you're lying,or admit to something i had not done...If i had said no i didn't i was saying he was lying, which would be highly inflammatory to call a cop a liar to their face, if i said oh i'm sorry then i admitted guilt to which i was not guilty of his accusation...So what i did was keep my mouth shut, look dead ahead and then casually at him momentairly to which he stares directly into my eyes waiting for any excuse to ticket me...Yet i answered not a word either way...He goes and runs license/reg. and finds out i'm a local..Now keep in mind he accused me of wreckless op to which he could take me straight to jail,he thought i was an out of towner when he saw i wasn't he tells me to have a good night and let's me go without a citation...
So those was the only two bad corrupt cops i ran into while driving and even then since i gave them nothing to show my annoyance, nor did i get beligerent, or use inflammatory speech i was able to walk away from those two jerk cops without anything against my license...
Remember 99% of the time if the cop lies the judge will take their word and u will be found guilty even IF u are innoncent...So be smart and think before u act, and u can save yourself some serious trouble...

The real estate crash and the retirement community caused some really bad commission-based policing. Some of the Police Officers were super anti-gun. One thing my ccw class trainer told us was that he felt uncomfortable admitting to his ccw handgun, and if an officer asked about weapons he would just say “I have nothing illegal in the vehicle, sir.” (All legal conduct in CO -check your state’s laws)
I told him I would feel very comfortable declaring it from the outset out of courtesy and safety, and he said that I have that luxury. But he said he doesn’t because he’s a minority (latino), and cops don’t treat him the same (he was speaking from ALL his experience with LEOs, ccw related or not)
I knew I couldn’t relate with his experience, because I have had good encounters with cops and always felt at the core that I can trust them.
Can you identify with his experience at all when dealing with cops, or has your experience been more like mine?

Don;t put your hands out the window or the cop is automatically going to think you’re guilty (because you were arrested previously and you were ordered to put your hands out). Normal people don’t do this. Just dome lights, windows down, keys out of ignition and on dash, and hands at 11:00 and 1:00 on the wheel.

Hey Trauma Cop!- some months back wife and I were driving, I’m pulled over for making an illegal turn. Fine, the officer asks for my DL and registration. DL is in my top shirt pocket. As I’m removing it the officer sees my CCW next to it and asks if I have a firearm. I reply yes. He then asks how many guns do I have I reply 2. He asks that I step out of my vehicle and to turn over both weapons to him as they were both on my person. He states that he is only confiscating my guns during this traffic stop for his and my protection and that he will return both when he is finished writing the ticket
I was totally respectful and complied. Both guns were returned along with a ticket (left on the hood of my truck) and off he went. I don’t see how this is legal. Thus happened in north central Fla. I’ve held my CCW since 1990
Just to reiterate, this only happened because the officer saw my CCW permit while Ivwas removing my DL from my shirt pocket

I’ve had these conversations with several LEOs in the western US while training. Beat cops to SWAT/Marshals. All have stated they have no issue interacting with CC. “Bad guys don’t tell you they’re carrying”.. that being said, two points of advice.
    A. Have your hands visible at all times and have respect, be truthful.
    B. If the officer asks for your firearm, never reach for it. “I would be happy to step out of the vehicle and allow you you remove it”. His/her partner walking up along the passenger side hasn’t heard the conversation and may think you’re going for a gun.
    Just my 2cents

I had a police officer get triggered when I said, "I have a cousin who is a cop." He replied, "'Cop?' That's drug talk!" and stuffed me in the back of his car. But...in 50 years of driving, that's the only time I've been disrespected by a police officer. And that includes my first interaction, when I was 15 and a half, driving with my cousin on a learner's permit, and clipped a parked car. That officer looked closely at us and said: "I don't know you boys. If you were troublemakers, I'd know you." Then he took us home and left us in the custody of my mother with a warning... after getting assurance from her that she'd pay for the damages. That was a white cop with black teenagers in the 60s in Oklahoma (and that was the cousin who became a cop).

And as for the criminals do what you have to do and go home every night . I'm seeing way to many officer's giving people trouble because of their EGO .
And to make it worse they do it in front of other officer's and do nothing about it . Until Law enforcement takes care of these crooked officers you are going to have trouble . For example look at the first Amendment Audit videos and you will see just how bad it is . It's all about EGO'S most of these officers don't even know the law . And these officers don't change when they are dealing with a CITIZEN who has never broken the law .

As to the license, that lives in my wallet with my CCW license, but registration and insurance are in the visor. I do try to have my wallet out by the time the officer reaches my window, making sure to hold the wallet up so that it can be seen through the back window. I haven't been pulled over in a while, but that procedure hasn't changed, although sometimes I'll have my wallet in the door or one of the cup holders.

The key element in essentially any kind of stop is uncertainty. We forget that the police are always walking into an unknown situation. A factor that police occasionally forget is that the folks they are stopping may have utterly no idea why they are being stopped. Even if they are not transporting anything legal, they are confused about why they were stopped, and that by itself is likely to make them nervous and they will act "suspiciously." The public knows that police are armed, and the same reflexive fear that leads to people calling 911 because they realize some one is carrying, extends to a nervousness toward the police as well, but they can't call the police this time. So it behooves every one to be smart, calm, and pleasant.

If I get pulled over I will answer the first question with, " I have my concealed carry firearm and permit on my person." Then I will answer their question once they say that it is fine. I have had police/sheriffs act very strange and take all of my guns out of the car and run serial numbers, unload them and sit them back in my vehicle. They made a comment about how we don't want to end up on CNN. They were investigating me because I had pulled into a parking lot and I was resting my eyes after driving all night. They thought I was passed out on narcotics as it is becoming a normal occurrence in America. I know they were trying to do their job but I think some rights were violated.

Great video I live my life as a black man practicing all of these safe habits. The only statement that should be reconsidered is the one when he says "don't get pulled over in the first place" I understand his basic point but a lot of black men are pulled over for no other reason than the officer saying we match the description of a burglary , robbery or someother type of crime suspect. I just really have a problem with that statement maybe follow it by saying just control the things that you can control like not speeding etc. Still great video and I truly believe if more cops and civilians followed these basic principles there would not be any need for the "Black Lives Matters" campaign. Unfortunately that's not where we are today...sad times...love all and treat others as you wish to be treated ....it's that simple..

This is a very informative video that I feel like anyone new to carrying a firearm should watch, I agree with the steps to interact with the police and I am always a calm and respectful person during a traffic stop. I have to say though, some of the cops where I live should not have been allowed to become police officers, which is surprising because I live in a small City that is 10 minutes from the town I was raised in where everyone knows your name and all the police remind you of Andy Griffith. I do usually drive a "beater" car because I'm a mechanic on the side and I always keep an older dependable car around to use as a "work car" like 90s or early 2000s Accord or Camry but they're not exactly what I would call a rust bucket, maybe a few dings here and there paint peeling in places. I do feel like I get profiled because of my cars being inexpensive... And even when I am in one of my nice cars I will get pulled over for no reason, it is usually "tag lights" even though they work ( I've only been pulled over for tag lights actually being out one time) and they always hold me up for an hour. Every time I'm headed to work at 5 in the morning there is at least one traffic stop in progress... I wish all police were more like they used to be, instead of only having met a handful officers that are still the "good ones" even if I were to get a ticket I would be so relieved just to deal with a good officer.
