The police appreciate him more than they are saying. They pixilated his license plate and then say, 'Oh gee, I wish I got his name'. They know who he is and are doing the right thing by keeping him out of it.

Sergeant is out of line. I have been backed several times by citizens with their guns. Hell, the civilian probably has more range time than the officers.
Might be alright in this situation but what about an active shooter in say a large shopping mall? How do the police tell who is the good guy/s and who is/are the bad guy/s when they arrive with little information?

You should never get involved as a 3rd party. Inserting yourself as a 3rd party when you dont know the full story is a huge error. 1st off the police have qualified immunity. The rest of us do not. 2nd you have no idea if the cop is a criminal. Cops can be just as dangerous as any criminal. In fact they usually are more dangerous because people trust the state too much
@@captaincapitalism264 In the handful of active shooter first response videos I’ve seen, I noticed the officer flanks then immediately drops the shooter. No commands, no warning. It might be part of the training or maybe the shooter was currently drawn on someone. I don’t know because it’s always blurred but It’s enough for me to really consider the consequences of helping in that situation.

I almost got shot a few years back. Iam a 15 year federal officer. I had just got off duty. I changed out of uniform as soon as I get off. I had my badge on my hip and my duty weapon. Some dude walked up to me and asked for a light. It was a joint but I was off the clock so I didn't give a shit. I lit it for him and his friend my neighbor yelled out that I was a cop. He pulled a knife and started walking towards me. My wife had came out I told her to get back in the house. I called the local dispatch who recognized my voice and said they were sending help. I kept backing up he kept following me. If he would have been white I probably would have fired but this was the height of BLM and I didn't want to be on the news for that shit. A female officer pulls in and sees my weapon starts yelling for me to drop it I told her I wasn't throwing my 1911 on the ground where he could reach it so I placed it on my tail bed and turned so she could see my badge and I yelled to hear who I was. Suspect took off they lost sight of him. That night he killed his ex wife and sister. Now I have to leave with not taking the shot.
That "civilian that is untrained" probably spent more time in the military than the deputy has spent on the job...
I'm not sure about that, by his stance I'd argue he's just a normal untrained civilian.

There are a lot of veterans here in this area including myself that are very well-trained and we know what we're getting ourselves into if we choose to do so.
@NicCageForPresident2024 I'm sure, I'm just saying that at a glance when a new officer arrives on scene it might not be immediately obvious if someone in plain clothes is helping or an aggressor. Sure there are tells, but mistakes can be made. I've even heard a story of a citizen pulling a gun on an aggressor that then got shot by another well-meaning gun carrying citizen because he read the situation wrong. I'm formally trained on firearm use and safety myself, and I'm not saying you should never help should the need arise.

Yeah, he claimed it was a problem because he doesn't know whether someone is properly trained. Meanwhile, a whole lot of LEOs are not _properly_ trained. I live in a town where the local PD uses one of the public ranges, instead of having their own (no money in the budget for their own facility). It's actually kinda nice because there's a lot of friendly interaction between us and our local cops. However, most of them are definitely not marksmen and several are more likely to sweep someone than the majority of people using the range. It _has_ helped them to want to be better, because getting out-shot by a bunch of regular Joes is a little embarrassing. However, they're not there, yet. I can't imagine how bad it is in places where officers train in private, and don't have to worry about the public seeing that they're a terrible shot.

Going to the range or taking some kind of self defense class does not make you a cop. They have specific training that they together with other cops so that when shit hits the fan everyone knows what everyone else is doing. If some rando shows up they don't know how the cops operate and they could cause confusion and do more harm than good. Like how the guy was initially pointing his gun in the direction of the officer and she had to correct him. That's not what we want. Not to mention all the legal issues that could arise from a civilian getting involved and screwing up something

Notice how appreciative the officer on scene was for the help. While the ones who werent in peril condemned the help.
It’s just because it’s dangerous for the civilian himself. An officer arrives as backup and sees someone in plain clothing they don’t recognize with a gun, they could not know if he’s good or bad. I personally commend the guy for the help. He did a great service and no one is questioning the guys heart and courage.

We’ve been witnessing all kinds of for years now.
We’re tired of witnessing the decline of our society… don’t give the responsible law-abiding any more restrictions… otherwise LEO will start getting less support from the responsible, law-abiding tax-payers.
Often being a good witness means defending yourself in a court of law with a criminal defense attorney in WA State. Police have no responsibility to protect citizens. Never relinquish 2A rights, or you own children will become the next government victims.
Too bad they take their taxes from us automatically. I wish we had that kind of leverage.

@@rickobrien4025the same applies to lone male officers, there are tons of videos showing how brazen criminals are when an officer is outnumbered but, the second the officer gets back up they become compliant or at the very least less combative. All patrol units should have two officers or, until numbers increase and policies improve, one officer accompanied by a K9 - the latter is already happening but, not nearly enough.

When I was a younger Marine Officer i pulled over on the side of I-35 because this guy was chasing this woman around the car. Got out in uniform with my service weapon on me. I asked him to stop, told her to get into my vehicle. He went toward his car and started to search for something. I pulled out my .45 and was dead set on killing him if he pulled out a weapon and I told him so. He took off and Highway Patrol showed up. I gave them the tag number and they took the young lady to the hospital. The officer never questioned me about my gun, he was former service as well, called my sir and by my rank. Many of us so called "Civilians", have more training and capabilities than these local Mayberry cops do.
Ok sarge, we'll just keep on driving next time, instead of stopping and helping.

Trusting strangers is also what the public has to do daily when you live in a city: trusting that neighbors won't steal from you, other drivers to use turn signals and not slam into you, trusting that a stranger won't rob you or beat you up. And lately, strangers seem not worthy of that trust.

I was thinking the exact same thing! It's also what we do in everyday life. Is that stranger driving at 70 next to me going to put me in the side rail. Strangers cooking the food for us. Sergeant said he "cringes" at these cases? The previous case they showed - one of the citizens was ex-military and he was far from "not qualified". They saved two officers that were shot to the head. Yet, Sergeant over here cringes. Wow.
I understand there is risk involved and it can cause confusion to have a civilian at the scene with a gun drawn but wow. Just Wow.
If that deputy was overwhelmed and taken down by an armed felon, you’d be singing a different tune when it comes to armed citizens helping when they see that law enforcement is outnumbered.
This female deputy had the right attitude about it - be cautious but if that guy was a bad guy, you’d be down already.

He may not be a bad guy, but he may complicate the situation further and unintentionally put the officer or others at risk. Stand by, be a good witness, but do not get in the way if not necessary. In this case, he could have stood by his car with his weapon holstered on stand by.

There were no politicians in this story. While I would always help a police officer in danger I fully accept that other officers rolling up into a situtation, especially if there has been fire, that I might get shot by mistake. This civilian pulled his weapon. When given directions to move HE HOLSTERED HIS WEAPON, MOVED AND THEN DREW HIS WEAPON AGAIN. That's text book. But what about the millions of idiot, wannabe cops? I see both sides of this as correct and am glad nothing bad happened.

Dang. Where do cops only get 6 weeks of training? Where I live it is 28 weeks averaging about 12 hours a day and when you graduate you are then in a field training program where you work with a designated officer for 1 year.
Bless that man. His steadfast courage, valor and moral rectitude was a shinning example of what happens when responsible, law abiding gun owning citizens are allowed to carry their firearms in case of potential protective measures.

She already had a game plan formed in her head, and the guy jumping in, without asking the officer if she NEEDED assistance, is a NEW VARIABLE she has to account for, and that could mess up her game plan. Having taken the Glock Armorers class three times over the years, I am the only civilian in the class. Everyone else is LEO and some of those are former military. Instructor asked how many rounds a year do you shoot in training. Some responded, maybe half, between 500 and 1000. There were a couple that were up around 6 to 7k, but they were SWAT members. Average was around 500 rounds or less. All due respect, LEOs are not as well trained with firearms as everyone is led to believe.

I am a former Deputy and if I was alone I would sure appreciate the assist, several LE officers have had their lives saved by citizens. The young Sgt needs to think long and hard before he tells citizens not to help, it may cost a deputies life.
In today's time, with all the hungry DA's that are looking for a reason for a lawsuit, they are obligated to give such a response publicly; regardless of their personal feelings.

Liberals & progressives in Washington state consider sentences like house arrest & ankle monitors as tough punishment, criminals consider both as a joke & easy to evade. You're never going to convince liberals that criminals are not victims of society, which is why they should have as little to do with writing criminal statutes as possible. In the state of Washington that's impossible because they control the legislature. That's a major reason for the decline of that state & its decent into lawlessness..

yeah, but those on house arrest are paying $300-900 a month for their ankle monitor, and if they miss a payment, cut it off, or fail to charge it and it goes dead, they get an immediate bench warrant. So house arrest truly sucks for the defendant. Had someone I knew on house arrest for an assault. He called it being on a 6-month "payment plan" with the County
No house arrest is not working. It’s just giving them a window of time to commit their crimes instead of 24 hours.
It's 2024, we have OnStar that can unlock your car or disable a stolen vehicle, but police can't disable a fleeing vehicle?! I'm surprised they get to drive cars and carry guns.

Civilian is anyone who isn't in the military OR the police based on all the definitions I've seen. The only reason it is maybe wrong here would be if the guy was active duty military or something--clearly he wasn't active police.
and they are public servants, ideally under a lawfully elected sheriff, not some holy uniformed army that's above any non-uniformed civilian peasant.
@@isoidWhat would you call the first forms of military when under England's rule? They were called minutemen and were famous with Paul Revere. This meant you had to be ready in a minutes notice to defend. There was no such thing as a professional military and was volunteers who were fed up with England's rule. I would argue a person who is Concealed carry would fall under this definition. As first active support for police officers to render first aid and cpr and support or cover fire. If we ever got invaded our professional military would go off to fight. Our police would then become paramilitary and we would then become the militia which is an in-between which utilizes some training but not full military training or training and waiting to be called by the military. Depends on the militia. I got gear in the event of an apocalypse and can have it ready in a couple minutes.

Most cops are barely trained with firearms. Training budgets suck and a good percentage of cops aren’t “gun guys.”
Civilians don't get trained on how to handle and use guns in law enforcement situations and scenarios. They usually know nothing of police tactics or strategy, much less having practiced them. They are liable to flag friendlies in high stress situations or even shoot them. They are much more likely to give into instinct or impulse and dangerously escalate a situation where cooler heads would otherwise prevail. Civilians are trained how to handle guns in a recreational setting, or for self/home defence, NOT on how to use them as law enforcement tools. Some are well trained to use them effectively for self defence, but that has limited relevance in a LE situation. Totally different things.

It's especially ironic knowing how little training cops typically have themselves. Unless the cops are military combat vets its not a stretch to assume your average conceal carry civilian has just as much if not more firearm training than patrol cops - basically everything the sgt said could apply to himself

@@Teesquared00 In today's day and age it is a derogatory term used by cops to put themselves above the citizens. It gives them a military mentality. This fits sense their trained that the citizens are their enemy. This is why cops approach most situations with a very combative mentality. Think about this. In a defensive situation if you fire two or three shots you are typically good. Now if you mag dump like a cop very quickly it would go from self defense to murder or manslaughter.

Thankfully it was a positive outcome but the next "intervention" might not be and someone's Mom/Dad could end up dead be it the civilian or Officer because of such a situation. It's also possible that criminals could try to ambush Police by "pretending to be there to help" and then take their lives. Then what happens the next time a random civilian tries to actually help and the civilian gets shot dead by Police. This can go on and on. So the Sgt., has right to be grateful but discourage the practice in general for the safety of the public and Officers.
Never tell the public you would not welcome their assistance. Police need all the help they can get today.

@@BjAn Cops "range time" is almost exclusively in an indoor pistol range, shooting at paper silhouettes. Everyone I know at the range has more training with more targets than that. I used to work with a local PD, and I'd trust the knowledge, experience, training, and just plain old safety mindset of the range guys before I'd automatically trust any badge. Seen way too many NDs from cops.

If it's a liability issue to assist your sherif who is potentially going to be out gunned protecting the security of the area, then there needs to be provisions created so sheriff's can accept armed civilian help as needed and extend "qualified immunity" on a case by case basis.

Retired Los Angeles area cop here. Seasoned officers can "read" the person who appears to be coming to their aid. But don't worry Pierce County, I have high level of confidence cops today will alienate the good guys so no one will be to quick to help you in the future.

I became a cop in the 80s. Many of were prior military and we worked very dangerous neighborhoods. You had to be able to determine who was thinking about killing you and who wasn't.@@SwampOperator

What this female deputy realized, that her male counterpart did not, is that it’s not us against you, it’s all of US against them. Not everybody’s out to get you my man, that gentleman who helped the deputy was calm, cool and collected under pressure. That’s what you should be training to be, not scared of the public.
Most female police officers act and control public interactions way better than their male counterparts. What women lack in physical strength they make up for in brains, intelligence, and empathy, and they can politely and respectfully gain cooperation and control without immediately resorting to physical violence and intimidation like most male police officers.

The Sgt corrected his statement on the fly. They didn't know his level of training. Anyhow, in this situation, the civilian drew his weapon and was standing in a cross fire with the deputies and also not behind cover. Would you say trained or untrained?
@@Bootyjuice.. Depends on the state. Most states allow you to buy a gun without showing proficiency, but many states make you take a class and prove that you are a competent shooter whenever you get a concealed carry license.
