World leaders including Russia's Putin meet with Ukraine leader, aim to end conflict

- President Vladimir Putin of Russia met with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy of Ukraine for the first time Monday at a summit in Paris to try to end five years of war between Ukrainian troops and Moscow-backed separatists.
Both sat down at the French presidential palace along with the leaders of France and Germany for talks focused on reviving a 2015 peace agreement for eastern Ukraine that has largely stalled. Since 2014, the war has killed 14,000 people, emboldened the Kremlin and reshaped European geopolitics.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also said there was goodwill at the summit, which is aimed at advancing efforts to restore peace to eastern Ukraine, though much work remained to be done. She said this at a news conference in Paris, where she spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after bilateral talks with Ukraine.

You can argue about what Russia did and whether it was right or not, but the fact that they outright lied to him (and his country) is a perfect representation of how Russia has been treated on the world stage for many many years - despite which, I personally believe, they (the Russians) tried to make things work with the West.

Dude France has one of the Largest militaries in the EU. Also, in 2016,they were third in having the most nukes in the world. First being Russia, second being America and fourth being Great Britain. But it kind of takes the piss. For Great Britain to fire a nuke of their own they need the launch codes from America. And most American nukes are kept in the UK. We're almost like an Island rocket base for a rapid response nuke attack for America. Can't fire our own without authorisation, used as an Island base for America. How times change eh?? There was a time when we were one of the most powerful militaries on the planet. Now because of budget cutbacks we can barely afford ammo and equipment for our own forces. If there is an American base nearby the British troops have to buy extra boots and clothing from the American troops there. Not ammunition of course, that would probably be illegal.

Ukraine will not give up its territories to Putin. They have suffered greatly,, died. starved. beem tortured, been raped, etc. for no reason other than Putin thought they were an easy target. Putin is looking for a way to save face. Ukraine shouldn't have to make concessions. They did not start the war.

Ukraine has the smaller population and russia has a well functioning war economy. It's beginning disorganized forces have improved in discipline. Russia won't be globally opposed. India won't and for china this situation is just way too beneficial. Also many nations in the global south aren't too fond of the west and not entirely unjustified have more sympathy to russia than the usa and as russia was successful to frame this war as "west vs nato" a lot of them won't oppose russia either in this matter.
China has stated that it is happy to buy russian oil and sell it 3x the peice to europe. And i almost cant blame them. This war is hurting russia and the west bad. It is cutting into weapon stocks and hurting down our economies especially those in europe. All the while we arw too hesitant to give Ukraine what it would need to push russia out of their territory. It will drag on for another year or more. Some are saying that e.g. Germany should go into a semi war economy to not only produce the necessary ammunition for Ukraine but also resupply its own drained weaponry.
The only upside is that for russia the situation is way worse.
@@IsomerSoma I agree that all Nato Allies have been dragging their feet in actually supporting Ukraine to end the war. Meanwhile a great leader and his people are being slaughtered, their country is being destroyed and the rest of the world is suffering from inflation. shortages, shipping problems, etc. Trump's lies and attempted Ukraine black mail to hurt Biden resulted in years of future financial costs for Americans as well as our trustworthyness for decades.
Surely the citizens of Ukraine should decide who there leaders should be, after all, a government is in place to serve the people.

But NATO didn’t and Ukraine was tricked by the west. Ukraine must have stayed with it’s neighbour Russia . Russia warned them and gave them several chances but a comedian president wasted everything and is ‘fighting for his country’
But this is my worry. If NATO is to withdraw, who will protect the countries which joined NATO in the first place? NATO doesn't need to move eastward; that should be agreed upon. But the little Baltic nations on Russia's border, without weapons and troops Russia could invade and take all three countries in a gulp. Russia has more tanks than all of Europe; they need to mutually support each other or else Russia could have whichever one they want for dinner. So, 1) let NATO do what it can to meet Russia's security needs, but 2) Russia will have to also meet NATO countries security needs. Besides, neither the US nor NATO have ever discussed invading Russia. But Russia has invaded European countries. Russia is the country which everyone fears will invade, not NATO:;

@@100krypton There are conditions which must be met before being admitted to NATO. Democracy, rule of law, etc. These are conditions which have kept Ukraine from being admitted to NATO. Endemic corruption in Ukraine has been one factor which has kept Ukraine from being admitted. Russia does not have true rule of law nor true democracy and its corruption is probably worse than Ukraine's.
