How about making a couple of little handles to attach to the front of the dust guards on the side of the saw and then you don't have to put your hand around the ply to lift it off? Inspiration from watching your videos.
Do the blades, as supplied by any tool company, ever work well past the first three cuts? Every time I get a new tool a new decent blade seems almost obligatory....
Kind of a shame on Milwaukee's part that a saw in this price category has such horrible dust management. Love the light on it and the digital miter gauge is convenient . But, the dust collection has turned me off on ever getting one. The way the collection is set up makes this more a contractor saw (mostly used outside) than a shop saw, in my opinion. Thanks for the FYI Jay. I'll stick with my current saw (Kobalt 12-in) with dust collection similar to your old saw that goes out the top of the shroud.

I built my own version of your station and for my wings I used rare earth magnets recessed into the top of the backing frame for the wings and then attached washers to the back of the wings that correspond to the position of the magnets. Just an idea that I thought I'd pass on to you and your viewers.

Recently bought a new Makita 12'' sliding compound and it has duel dust ports and works very well. Certainly better than my 18-year-old Makita. Plus, the saw itself is awesome. And btw, your weight loss is terrific. Good for you!

I switched to CMT blades a month or so ago and am very pleased. I think they are a good value relative to both cheaper and ore expensive blades. The quality is very good and the price not that much ore than big-box plates. Plus they can be resharpened.
Push-pull ventilation of the dust-particulate (swarf) generation zone is the most effective means of evacuating the swarf zone. This existing technology has yet to trickle down into the woodworking world. A positive pressure air injection balanced with and directed thru the swarf zone and towards the negative pressure outlet. For the offending miter saw 4 air injection zones; 1.under the table, this could entrainment that which makes the circuit around the blade especially if wider than the kerf where the blade doesn't pass thru table insert. 2. Two in the shroud 45 degrees to the blade, aimed rearward into a negative pressure outlet to dislodge gullet carried swarf. 3. Behind the fence directed rearward. 4. Behind the saw directed rearward. With the limited front opening the additional cfm and velocity of positive pressure injection will entrainment more air into the custom opening preventing swarf escape. These concepts were borrowed from existing industrial applications where they must capture all swarf, collect and separate it before the airflow reaches filtration and discharge. One of these days a maker will add these principles to his tools, and maybe manufacturers will recognize swarf as the health risk it is and incorporate these principles into their tools. Meanwhile it is up to thinkers who can get in the Magic School Bus and get into the airflow identifying opportunities to master control along the swarf path. You are the first to think about why the mitersaw scatters wooddust (It is that which is broken down that names the dust, not the process. Unless the saw is breaking down, it would be the blade, we should retire "sawdust, sanding dust etc.)
Looks like the lights that tell ya where the blade will strike the wood are burned out on your Junkie miter saw , mine too . What a POS Milwaukee put on the market . Anybody looking to buy a saw ? Keep looking bc M dont have a decent one . My first and last "Red" tool I will ever buy . I should have stayed with Dewalt . BTW ,There is no way to improve the dust collection on this saw . On your old miter saw the ridgid. Did you ever have any issues with that black arm that your pointing at marker 9:50 ever bend causing your guard not to function properly I have this saw and had to take the guard off because the old one keeps bending . And you can not find this part anywhere. Thanks for any help
Interesting observations about the blade and shroud. Most people just seem to throw up their hands when it comes to dust collection on the miter saw, good to see you still working to improve it.
Why don't you attach a handle to the face of the panels? It seems that dust extraction happens when the cut is 90 degrees but doesn't happen when the wings are removed.
You might want to add some vertical "D" handles to the removable plates inline with, or slightly inset from the screws. That'd make it super easy to do a one handed grab to lift the plates off their screws as well as put them back in place. Just a thought...
Something else to watch out for when buying a miter saw... we'll see how long before you say "enough" and swap away from this. The dust issue is a big deal.
I think that saw needs looking at, it is noisy and the blades are 'ringing' (very clear on headphones) like it has a bearing issue or a lot of slack/slop in the drive shafts/belt/gears which ever it uses.
Is there a reason why you didn't just stick a rare earth magnet on the side panels? Seems like an even simpler solution. Love your videos! EDIT: LOL. I didn't wait for the next sentence "magnets..something else to purchase"
Best way to eliminate dust from the miter saw....no miter saw! I sold mine a couple yeas ago, and don't miss it at all. But I don't hang crown molding all day, either.
You had the Ridgid saw for several years and said you replaced it because it had worn to the point of not being as accurate as it once was. Given this difference in dust collection and today's $400 price difference between the two saws, which would you spend your own money on if you were buying a saw for yourself? To you, is the Milwaukee worth $749, or would you buy the Ridgid at $349 and use the $400 for something else?
I use a power bar that turns off outlets when the control outlet device is not on. The saw an shop vac are connected to it so the vac turns on and off with the saw. A second or two after the saw stops. Instead of a dust collection system each tool has their own setup.
I recently bought a makita miter saw, and it costs as much as the milwaukee, but has way better dust collection, and a smaller footprint. I would recommend that as it is comparable to the festool saw.

I missed you saying what your doing to loose the weight. Obviously it’s suited you well. The saws turntable looks really small. The wings of the frame tapering into the pivot point reduces the surface area quite a bit. Can you still put jigs or stops for crown? Hold downs? The long arm and small round turntable remind me of a spoon, so now I have to call that your spoon saw. Good job all around, have a great Christmas.
I have a DeWalt miter saw which has terrible dust collection. Even with a "dust port", it does absolutely nothing. I also tried a shop vac with no luck. I ended up just positioning a Hefty trash bag around the back of the saw like a tent to catch all of the dust so it gets trapped there instead of going all over the place.

I have a Tenryu Silencer fine crosscut blade, among many others. But, it really did cut down on blade noise when I put it into my saw. Significantly... Also, I found that blades that have what I think is called a “shear face” meaning the actual front faces of the teeth have an alternating bevel, (separate from the alternating top bevel), tend to be very poor for dust collection in a miter saw. It’s a bummer though because I feel that the alternating shear face teeth actually noticeably improve the cutting performance, but it really spits the dust out the sides... but all in all, the Tenryu Silencer series is definitely the quietest blade I’ve used in a muted saw... Love your vids Jay!

I was using a water hose to clean a broom. And I could see that when was hitting it there were not as much splashing around with water. Could the same thing happen to a table/miter-saw ? What would happen if the blade was running in close proximity to two brooms at a 90% angle ? What if the slot for the blade was closed of by a row of hair ?
I have a Delta 12" miter saw. Dust collection has bedeviled me for years. I have tried all sorts of containment measures, most recently the clever "box it all up" solution from Fisher Shop. Most of the dust I was unable to contain spewed sideways. When I switched from the original blade to the CMT blade you recommend, it made a HUGE difference. I would never have thought of this had you not emphasized it here. Thank you for the good work.
Hey, Jay, can you tell me why all miter saws are made for lefthanded operation? That has always bugged me. What I mean is, you adjust the right hand fence to be perpendicular to the blade, but if you are right handed, you tend to hold the material against the left fence and operate the saw with your right hand. Doing it that way means you really aren't necessarily getting square cuts because the left hand fence is determining the accuracy of squareness and it can't be adjusted (at least not on my Dewalt portable).
Does anyone (manufacturer) have some kind of air sprayer to clean the blade as it's exiting the material? If it was in the right place, pointed the right way, seems like it could toss the sawdust into the path of the collection system.
Jay, your the fourth person who has a love/hate relationship with their Milwaukee Miter saw. Maybe you could talk to the company now that they have outfitted you with their latest line of tools? Just a thought.
Do you think if the replaceable throat plate was perforated, on either side of the blade slot, dust could be drawn down from the blade guard and into the dust collection? Just a thought.

I would look at modifying the guard so it stays farther up first, then, take a metal hole saw and cut a hole in the side of the metal upper guard, 1.5 or 2 inches. Attach a small collapsible hose to that that can connect through your enclosure to your large port behind the saw. Radial arm saws had this kind of dust collection and they worked pretty well. Last thing I would suggest is zero clearance tape from fast cap. Helps get cleaner cuts but will also help direct any airflow from the blade across the tape and toward the shroud.
Yup dust collection is pretty bad on most miter saws. I have a large dust funnel underneath mine and another hose attached to the port, seems to work pretty well.
I have a dewalt non slider setup the same way but I cut my wings so I can angle the blade then cut felt LVP underlayment to fill the gaps have it hanging like curtains on the back of the wings so the saw pushes it out of the way when angled seems to work pretty well, I don’t have dust collection but I have a box underneath that everything falls into. I like the keyhole slots great idea.
Good thoughts of the dust circulation around the blade. It's made me realise that my saw has to have a vac plugged into the blade dust port or the buildup will eventually cause trouble - the blade guard would have to be wider to work without a vac. One thing worth adding is that the spray can also be to do with the placement and direction of the motor vents. These seem to be designed to clear the work area during cutting, but perhaps a some lightweight stick-on vents pointed upwards or sideways would help to keep the workspace tidier and reduce the amount of fine particles in the air?
Couple of thoughts 1)you can get very thin strong neodymium magnets that could be super glued easily so magnets aren’t a big deal 2) I watched another video recently showing the two rear large baffles replaced with a set of heavy duty vertical blinds slightly overlapped ( not sure what they are called you see these hanging in some retail stores or workshops they provide a wall that you can just walk through by slipping between two of the vertical strips). Sorry not explaining what these are called very well if anyone knows what they let me know in comments below. The point of this curtain was that it could flex and seal more effectively regardless of the orientation of the saw, ie cutouts in the rear baffles to accommodate horizontal or vertical articulation of the blade are not necessary. You do of course need to make sure there is no chance of the vertical blind being entangled in the blade mechanism. Thanks for the video, I hope you don’t consider this post as a criticism just and alternate viewpoint for others to consider if building / improving mitre saw dust collection. I'm always looking for a way to minimize dust. The DC on my miter saw station is pretty good, but you've given me a couple ideas. Thanks. A couple of inexpensive or shop made handles would finish off those panels. Congrats on the weight loss.

Looking good, man. If you care about clean cuts, accuracy, and dust collection, I don't understand why you don't just get a Kapex. So much work to still get mediocre dust collection and probably just OK accuracy.
Does this saw have the ability/option to loosen the detent plate for squaring? I have a Ridgid 10" slider that could only be adjusted by loosening the fence. Terrible. You had to have all the bolts loosened to move it, and trying to leave one on the end tighter, as a pivot, never worked correctly. That saw also had some flex in the slides. Curt ng perfectly square was very frustrating. I decided to go with DeWalt. Just about every trim guy uses DeWalt. Can't really argue with that. I'm currently building a modified version of your miter saw station and the DeWalt takes some creativity in positioning since it's so long behind the saw. The adjustment at the detent plate seems to be a much better method for miter saws.
Thanks, Jay! My miter saw has altered my perspective on dust collection into two categories; that which is easily cleaned up and that which is harder to clean up. The easy stuff is what bounces out front. The rest is what coats whatever is sitting behind the saw and what falls down behind it. That second group is where I'm focusing my efforts because a "whole problem" solution is too elusive. Sweeping the floor in front of the saw is easy in comparison.
Hey Jay, have you ever noticed your saw motor gets hot when making a lot of cuts? I have a brand new Dewalt sliding 12" saw and I made about 300 cuts last night and notice the motor housing was quite warm. I was wondering if its due to the fact that the saw is being used in a confined space (my setup is very similar with the dust shroud) Brushes looked okay and there was no arching that I could see... Any thoughts? Thanks!
A good saw blade makes a significant difference in vibration, cut quality, sound, and load on the tool. I used to think it would not be that much but after trying one, it's definitely noticable.

No. The stock blade caused the ringing. This motor sounds exactly like the kapex.

It will discharge my air conditioning as well. I live in Mississippi. Hot and humid. AC is borderline a must.

Your dust collection on the saw may work better if you pull the saw down into the cut and then pull the saw toward you to complete the cut.

I have a Delta 12" miter saw. Dust collection has bedeviled me for years. I have tried all sorts of containment measures, most recently the clever "box it all up" solution from Fisher Shop. Most of the dust I was unable to contain spewed sideways. When I switched from the original blade to the CMT blade you recommend, it made a HUGE difference. I would never have thought of this had you not emphasized it here. Thank you for the good work.

Hey, Jay, can you tell me why all miter saws are made for lefthanded operation? That has always bugged me. What I mean is, you adjust the right hand fence to be perpendicular to the blade, but if you are right handed, you tend to hold the material against the left fence and operate the saw with your right hand. Doing it that way means you really aren't necessarily getting square cuts because the left hand fence is determining the accuracy of squareness and it can't be adjusted (at least not on my Dewalt portable).
Does anyone (manufacturer) have some kind of air sprayer to clean the blade as it's exiting the material? If it was in the right place, pointed the right way, seems like it could toss the sawdust into the path of the collection system.
Jay, your the fourth person who has a love/hate relationship with their Milwaukee Miter saw. Maybe you could talk to the company now that they have outfitted you with their latest line of tools? Just a thought.

Do you think if the replaceable throat plate was perforated, on either side of the blade slot, dust could be drawn down from the blade guard and into the dust collection? Just a thought.

Good quality. Good value.
I would look at modifying the guard so it stays farther up first, then, take a metal hole saw and cut a hole in the side of the metal upper guard, 1.5 or 2 inches. Attach a small collapsible hose to that that can connect through your enclosure to your large port behind the saw. Radial arm saws had this kind of dust collection and they worked pretty well. Last thing I would suggest is zero clearance tape from fast cap. Helps get cleaner cuts but will also help direct any airflow from the blade across the tape and toward the shroud.
Yup dust collection is pretty bad on most miter saws. I have a large dust funnel underneath mine and another hose attached to the port, seems to work pretty well.
I have a dewalt non slider setup the same way but I cut my wings so I can angle the blade then cut felt LVP underlayment to fill the gaps have it hanging like curtains on the back of the wings so the saw pushes it out of the way when angled seems to work pretty well, I don’t have dust collection but I have a box underneath that everything falls into. I like the keyhole slots great idea.
If the dust is a problem with the Milwaukee saw compared to the other saw that you used, why do you keep saying that it’s a great saw?

Good thoughts of the dust circulation around the blade. It's made me realise that my saw has to have a vac plugged into the blade dust port or the buildup will eventually cause trouble - the blade guard would have to be wider to work without a vac. One thing worth adding is that the spray can also be to do with the placement and direction of the motor vents. These seem to be designed to clear the work area during cutting, but perhaps a some lightweight stick-on vents pointed upwards or sideways would help to keep the workspace tidier and reduce the amount of fine particles in the air?

Couple of thoughts 1)you can get very thin strong neodymium magnets that could be super glued easily so magnets aren’t a big deal 2) I watched another video recently showing the two rear large baffles replaced with a set of heavy duty vertical blinds slightly overlapped ( not sure what they are called you see these hanging in some retail stores or workshops they provide a wall that you can just walk through by slipping between two of the vertical strips). Sorry not explaining what these are called very well if anyone knows what they let me know in comments below. The point of this curtain was that it could flex and seal more effectively regardless of the orientation of the saw, ie cutouts in the rear baffles to accommodate horizontal or vertical articulation of the blade are not necessary. You do of course need to make sure there is no chance of the vertical blind being entangled in the blade mechanism. Thanks for the video, I hope you don’t consider this post as a criticism just and alternate viewpoint for others to consider if building / improving mitre saw dust collection. Did you ever try the Makita 12” ? There dust collection looks the best out of the saw I’ve seen. Also as everyone else has stated you look in great shape!

Looking good, man. If you care about clean cuts, accuracy, and dust collection, I don't understand why you don't just get a Kapex. So much work to still get mediocre dust collection and probably just OK accuracy.

Does this saw have the ability/option to loosen the detent plate for squaring? I have a Ridgid 10" slider that could only be adjusted by loosening the fence. Terrible. You had to have all the bolts loosened to move it, and trying to leave one on the end tighter, as a pivot, never worked correctly. That saw also had some flex in the slides. Curt ng perfectly square was very frustrating. I decided to go with DeWalt. Just about every trim guy uses DeWalt. Can't really argue with that. I'm currently building a modified version of your miter saw station and the DeWalt takes some creativity in positioning since it's so long behind the saw. The adjustment at the detent plate seems to be a much better method for miter saws.

Thanks, Jay! My miter saw has altered my perspective on dust collection into two categories; that which is easily cleaned up and that which is harder to clean up. The easy stuff is what bounces out front. The rest is what coats whatever is sitting behind the saw and what falls down behind it. That second group is where I'm focusing my efforts because a "whole problem" solution is too elusive. Sweeping the floor in front of the saw is easy in comparison.
How about a dedicatec high power vac that is pulling dust from a custom made hood mounted inside the cabinet?
I seen another idea to run a dado slot on the top and bottom to slide the cover open like a barn door.
Hey Jay, have you ever noticed your saw motor gets hot when making a lot of cuts? I have a brand new Dewalt sliding 12" saw and I made about 300 cuts last night and notice the motor housing was quite warm. I was wondering if its due to the fact that the saw is being used in a confined space (my setup is very similar with the dust shroud) Brushes looked okay and there was no arching that I could see... Any thoughts? Thanks!
They get warm. Most all electrical motors do. No worries so long as it is used as intended by the manufacturer.

A good saw blade makes a significant difference in vibration, cut quality, sound, and load on the tool. I used to think it would not be that much but after trying one, it's definitely noticable.
