- The full First Story showdown with the White Lion at the start of a vanilla Kingdom Death campaign in Kingdom Death: Simulator! 🖤 I explain all the rules you should need to get started with your own First Story (including traps and severe injuries!).
Please note! I made a mistake in this video and rolled a hit location die for every point of damage in a single hit (for example at 36:30) - in fact, all damage from a single monster hit is resolved to the same location. Sorry about that!
OMG, there is so much I have been doing wrong. I redid the First Showdown after watching your tutorial, not only did everyone survive, they got through without any severe injuries! THANK YOU!
weeeee this comment made me so happy, thank you!! i’m so pleased i could help! i hope my next few tutorials will be useful too 🖤
lol I said basically the same on another video, and sure enough I learned yet another great basic rule from this one. This channel is a treasure.
I appreciate that in amongst the encouragement derived from rib cracking, hacking the scapula deltoid and jawless blood vomiting, KD lightens the mood with the almost friendly-sounding chomp attack and hits to the beast’s ding-dong.
Great video, thanks :)
Always use the founding stone on the first hit. That extra strength is awesome early game
Fantastic video, well done! Just what I needed in preparation for my first campaign.
comments like this make me so happy, thank you!! 🖤
On a long trip today, so I’m binging your content. Thanks for your videos!
you’re so welcome! hope they make the trip bearable! 🖤
Thanks a lot for this great playthrough/tutorial!
I think you are doing a fantastic job in combining an entertaining playthrough with a solid rules and simulator explanation!
And I enjoy watching and following along because of the fresh and vivid way you are doing this.
Looking forward to your next videos and thank you for all the past ones.
PS: I love how you say "cool" whenever something bad happens 🤗
i really appreciate that, thank you! 🖤i'm so glad i'm managing to balance the tutorial element with telling a story. there's definitely going to be a lot of "cool" moments in the upcoming videos!!
That was a brutal first encounter. I did enjoy it though, looking forward to the next video
i’m so glad you enjoyed it! my encounters tend to be on the more brutal side because i’m so bad at the game, hopefully the future showdowns will be similarly bloody! 🖤
Great video that made me so nostalgic to play - half my game is at another house so I haven't been able to play for years. The first fight is just perfect - dripping with tension and theme and already so much narrative. Seeing the lion severely injured, Zachary gets too close going for the finishing blow and barely lives to regret it. A cautionary tale to tell the other survivors about!
i’m so glad i could capture some of the Kingdom Death magic for you! it’s so nostalgic to go back to the core People of the Lantern monsters for me too. I’m hoping to make at least one nice video that captures the experience of fighting each monster! 🖤
Great video thanks!
Well done!
Your explanation of rules and such are great and I now understand a few things better, so thanks for the great video! Question, how do you change the names on the figures and on the cursor? That is very cool and looks very helpful! Looking forward to the next one!
i’m so glad my explanations make sense! you can link a survivor model and a record sheet to each gear grid by hovering over it with the model or sheer in your hand-you should see a bar fill up for a second or so and then it’ll link! i’ll make a quick video showing this since it’s a bit obscure! 🖤
You rock
Great video. I'm waiting on my key to open the simulation door. I can sometimes convince the game group to play KDM instead of something else. I'm hoping simulator will let me play solo without all the setup required (I don't mind the setup, I love this game).
thank you! 🖤 it’s hard going getting an IRL group to the table, i’m so grateful that mine managed to get a couple of long campaigns in! the Simulator will be a game changer for sure!!
Needed this a long time ago! Great video ! Have you played aeon trespass?
i’m so glad it was helpful! 🖤 i’m hopeful that the next couple i’m working on now will be too!
i haven’t, no, but a friend from my Kingdom Death party has it so i’m curious what she makes of it!
I'm confused. At 36:30 you roll 3 hit location dice to represent one hit with 3 damage. Is this correct? Or are you supposed to roll one hit location and assign 3 damage to that location?
i was completely convinced that you roll one hit location dice for each point of damage, but because of your comment i went back and checked the rules and i've been playing it wrong! for YEARS! how embarrassing! thank you for prompting me to check, it's going to take a while to retrain my brain!
i've added a note in the description - this is probably a good reason to go back and re-record those tutorials sometime. thanks again for pointing it out! 🖤
@@anawfulfeeling Wonderful video! I actually watched it a couple days ago and it's been eating at me if that rule was correct because I thought I'd been playing wrong for YEARS!! Haha. Glad I came back to ask. The beauty of KDM is you can make mistakes and the system works.
@@matternst5310 initially i wrote a comment saying "haha, no, of course you roll each damage separately, it would be WAY too hard otherwise!" - i'm so glad i went back and checked the rulebook! though now i have to grapple with the consequences of this knowledge 😆 i was bad enough at the game already!!
@@anawfulfeeling I suppose one way to counter is dodging after hit locations are rolled. Were you rolling 6 location die for 6 damage and then dodging one location? You might have been playing it harder...
Would you mind telling us what keyboard short cut you use the first time you use it in each video, please? Great work BTdubs!
thank you! was there a shortcut in particular you’re thinking of?
@@anawfulfeeling I can't remember off the top of my head TBH. I *think* what prompted me to ask is when you picked up several dice, but I'm old and forgetful so could be wrong. 😋
@@pastel-heck it's a great video too!
One quick thing: I believe that the survivor that is attacking cannot spend survival. So, if you are attacking the lion and he has a reaction, you can’t spend survival to dodge that reaction, although other survivors could spend a survival as needed.
you’re right! someone mentioned it in another comment 🖤 thanks for pointing it out anyway though!
@@anawfulfeelingno problem! I read through some of the comments to see if anyone else mentioned it and must have missed that. Sorry for doubling up.
no problem at all! 🖤 please keep an eye out for any other mistakes i make in videos, i’m keen to get the rules down!
Thank you for making this tutorial playlist! I just downloaded the Simulator, trying to get my bearings. I noticed when you mouse over your miniatures on the board they reveal their names below them (like 'Zachary')-- my survivor miniatures don't show a name and I can't find a way to create one. Any secret to this?
you’re welcome, i’m so glad it’s helpful! you might need to link your miniatures to their respective gear grids and record sheets, if i understand correctly! my ‘ten tips for the sim’ video covers it, i think, but let me know how you get on! 🖤
@@anawfulfeeling Ah! You're so right-you show us how to do this in the 'features and tips' video. Thanks for directing me to it. Here's a link and timestamp for anyone else in the future who was wondering how: ua-cam.com/video/bd_R4gV4zpk/v-deo.htmlsi=rCeooWgBKyu-XU7B&t=57
yay, pleased to hear it helped! 🖤
How come you didn't roll on the severe table when you filled in the heavy hit to the body and head for Zachary?
when you fill in the heavy hit box, you knock the survivor over but you don't roll on the Severe Injuries table 🖤 it's only subsequent damage to a location after that box is filled that results in a roll on the table.
did they take the turn order cards out of the simulator?
good question! i've definitely seen them in there in a previous patch, if they're missing it might be a bug.
You're resolving damage incorrectly. A monster can only wound as many locations as attack dice rolled. So if an attack has speed 2, damage 3, lets say both hit. You roll 2 location dice and apply 3 damage to each location. You do not roll 6 location dice and spread the damage out all over the character's body. If you rolled the waist and legs, if neither location was wounded, the waist would go to a heavy injury (1 from armor, light, then heavy). The legs would go from light, heavy, to severe. I played this wrong at first too, but spreading the damage like that makes your survivors way tougher than they should be.
hello! you’re right, i mention this in the video description 🖤 thanks for the explanation anyway!
How do you pick up a card from the AI deck without revealing it?
A lantern 10 does matter for monsters only in that it is always a successful hit
My understanding is that the +1 insanity from Monster Controller is only when you have a choice.
Just a funny aside, it turns out I'm a child and my group has taken to chanting "crit the dick" whenever Fuzzy Groin is drawn.
When you take 1 hit doing multiple damage, you take that much damage to 1 hit location. Somehow this is still exactly what happened lol.
Hopefully I don't come across as nit-picky, I don't think your goal is to explain every tiny point of the rules so I don't expect things like the lantern 10 mattering to really be all too important for your purposes. Just sharing notes and offering some Hopefully constructive criticism! Thanks for making content for the KD Sim, nothing but respect!
Thanks so much for these notes, no need to worry about them at all! 🖤 So to pick up an AI card without revealing it, press '1' instead of 'E' - the number keys pick up cards from a deck without revealing when you're hovered over a deck. That reminds me to put it in my tips and hidden features video!
NOOOOOOOO! Lantern year 3 and I have been counting crits during the attempt wound rolls and not the wounds :P
RESET! haha
aah i was just teaching someone the game and they really struggle with that too! 🖤
@@anawfulfeeling Just too keen to do damage 😂
@@anawfulfeeling Its just a other way the game kicks you when you are down.... Rolling lanterns on wound attempts :P
Any reason why you didn't go for the automatic critical hit to get the +1 strength?
i think it was either that i wanted to show the basic attack flow before explaining exceptions like the first White Lion hit location, or i forgot :)
@@anawfulfeeling I see, alright, thanks for the reply.
