That dog brought her to the lake and then he took off right when she was focusing on the hole , he went off with his buddies into the bush to live happily ever after.

soylentgreenfairy "What is the grass growing on???" A thin layer of soil washed onto the bedrock over the centuries. It's not thick enough to support much growth other than grass, though, and is patchy.
I drive by this often... never noticed it before. I can almost guarantee that the freezing and thawing of the water between small cracks in the basalt caused a fissure which then sped the process of erosion down into a lava tube. Because the area is absolutely riddled with tubes.
Just stumbled onto this video. I have never been here, but I did drive close on my way to Sisters and Bend, OR. There is another Lost Lake just north of Mt. Hood accessed by Lost Lake Rd off of Hwy 35 & Hwy 281. It is much more beautiful around there. There are camp grounds and trails around the lake. You can rent row boats and go out on the lake. My wife, soon to be daughter in law, and I did this in August of 2013. We got some great pictures of Mt. Hood from on the water.
It looks like Lost Lake will finally live up to its name.

I'm thinking that water found the entrance of an ancient lava tube and it is acting like a pipeline to another part of the same network, perhaps later emerging as a spring or series of springs at some distant and lower altitude location.
All I could think was plug it up. A 2inch steel plate should last a few decades. As a young teen, I dammed up a small creek; I did where the banks were highest. 3weeks later I went back, I had flooded the entire area. I created maybe 100 acre pond that was 3ft deep. It's been 30years. I should Google Earth the Area. lol .
U are absolutely awesome, and your Dogg is like a 'detective inspector' sniffing around and observing the phenomenon. Good one Hun. Draining possibly into a larger casym underground. it'd be quite interesting to find out how long the lake has been there for and see if my therory is right , without knowing the previous or it's original size u could say, it's not a lost lake, really it's a recycling body of water feeding itself down the gurgler, then replenishing the bigger body of water so unto never actually truly disappear, just to continue it's mysterious flow, on "Mumma natures Rock watercourse" & conveyor belt
There seems to be SEVERAL "Lost Lake's" here in Oregon!! The one that I have always gone to is just above the Spruce Run aka Jewel/Mist area. I have friends who have gone to other "Lost Lake's" in Oregon.
@@TheDeanoc69 it is sort of true. The lake sits over a partially collapsed lava tube. It is the drainage into the collapsed lava tube that creates the underground river. There are 2 other holes there that I know of. They are quite a bit smaller and slightly higher in elevation so they would be completely dry when the lake is this low. Also, while it is constantly draining, the winter and spring rains followed by the snow melt are sufficient enough keep it pretty full most of the year. Most years it’s still pretty much a lake up until July when it starts getting dry and the inflow can’t keep up with the outflow. I live 45-50 minutes from there and I stop there on my way to visit relatives in Sisters, Or all the time.
@@TheDeanoc69 you’re welcome and yes, I love living near so much beauty. I’ll take advantage of it while I can because I’ll be leaving Oregon in the next couple of years. Just found out that I will be inheriting some family land in Oklahoma that I can’t pass up. I’ll never be able to afford that kind of acreage in Oregon.
@@kef103 This is not a sinkhole, but a collapsed lava tube. The ground all around it is solid bedrock, and the shape of the hole erodes on a massive geologic time scale.
The soil might be fairly firm. Since it does not seem to be eroding much. If it was loose soil, then yes it would be dangerous. I might touch it with a ten foot pole!
I says "every spring" it drains into the hole. Does the lake not exist year round like all other lakes? Surely it will be draining into the hole year round?
And nobody knows where the water is going? Amazing.. you’d think.. there would be a difference somewhere else, in the past, lake was here, hole opened, millions of gallons of water went down it.. just gone!
Wow, I would be freaked out to get close and end up in the center of the world, lol! It is quite amazing, and your directions are great! Thank you for sharing!
It’s probably the roof of a sinkhole. No way I would be standing that close.
It's an ongoing, yearly phenomenon. See: ua-cam.com/video/ibr65Asf3Ig/v-deo.html
It is not a sinkhole. Solid bedrock; a collapsed lava tube. Been there for years and years unchanged.
@@NatureShy ...or is it?
I love the way the dog just nonchalantly walks up to it

I wish that she would have walked around more of the circle than she did, enabling us to see it from several angles.
Thanks for showing us such a Mother Nature's mistery!

I wouldn't be caught anywhere near that thing. Water and saturated dirt can be dangerous!

I want say something.. But nah
soylentgreenfairy "What is the grass growing on???"
A thin layer of soil washed onto the bedrock over the centuries. It's not thick enough to support much growth other than grass, though, and is patchy.
So you don't fish, swim or boat... it's too dangerous to be near water, and saturated soil. Pretty fucking lame.
Interesting video..reading your commentd..they mostly seem rude n snide...trolls in mass numbers...thanks for sharing. .be safe
No trolls this time, just people that can't understand so much carelessness.
Wow amazing! ! Oregon is so beutifull I hope wach it with my eyes some day!
Pro tip: turn off sound
so the dog just ran off into the sunset??
Basically....
Mike Solo I guess so...
He ain't stupid he now's shit about to go south real soon
If you look closely, he is just hanging way out there to the right side.
Wouldn't you if you had this woman for an owner?

StressedYeti you are smart!
Guarantee?
Yes. Central and Southeastern Oregon is full of lava tubes that have collapsed like that. Those single holes in the roofs are called skylights.
Straight to the secret underground alien dwellings 😲
Yeah ... Hey ! The dog just ran off in one direction and just kept on going.
You almost called it lost dog.
Jiggle the handle!

Lost Lake has been doing this for ever. Used to camp there 50 years ago. It fills up in the winter.
Yes, and she knows this. She's just showing it on film for those who have not seen it.
I LIKE YOUR FOOTAGE, VERY PLEASANT,
Legend has it that "Big Dog" hasn't come back since!
Even the water is smart enough to get out of Oregon.
That's right let's turn this into a political bash of the high tax lefties !! Lava tube is my guess.
i adored Oregon when i lived there for a short time...
I live in Oregon City! This should be a family adventure
This should be an 8 hour video of nothing but that water sound with this scenic backdrop.

When would you recommend the best time to visit this spot? Thanks for the video and directions on how to get there.
Best time to visit is spring. Spring is the only time that the this happens. Winter it is snow/ice covered. Summer the hole is filled with tiny frogs.

Is this the lost lake right near Mt Hood?
Is the lake still there?
