No empathy from those dudes because the ones who aren't athletes are cutthroat divas who border on sociopaths. Plus they're shock jocks when on the radio so they say the most extreme crap for ratings on the radio then bring it on TV.

Add in the rookie talent show where he made it rain with a stack of bills. He didn't have the right mindset at all. As Martellus Bennett said, in college you pretty much just out athlete everybody.
Can't do that in the pros.
His personal problems and tragedies are note worthy, and being on the Raiders with Lane Kiffin was also not a good fit. But I don't think he would have ever put in the effort needed. And I'm not buying at all trying to say if social media were something back then that it would've helped. I mean he included in the video that pretty well known picture of him in the fur coat.

It's also not discussed in this video, the whole time all these big personal life incidents were going on, Russell was holding out for a massive, unheard of contract that would pay him more than most established QB's in the league...
That made it hard for players & coaches to feel bad for him by the time he finally came to camp.
He's why the following CBA forced a change with a rookie contract cap, to prevent this escalation any further.

You dug deep into why things happened instead of just giving stats. It's refreshing to hear an athletes story from a human perspective rather than just an attention grabbing crash & burn story. I look forward to future content. He really was the man at LSU. He would have been something incredibly special if he'd worked as hard as a Raider as he did as a Tiger. What separates the busts from the greats is that the busts take their eyes off the prize and get lazy when their name gets called. The greats know that the work is just beginning. More than that, the biggest difference between the busts and the greats is how they respond to adversity. I hate that we were robbed of MVP years in the pros, but I'm glad JaMarcus is in a beter place mentally.

This video made me turn from making fun of JaMarcus Russell to respecting him. Everything he went through, and hearing how it affected him, made me feel bad. I respect him for working through it and being better today, and it makes me feel bad for constantly making fun of JaMarcus and treating him, like most people, white or black, as almost subhuman.

I never looked down on JaMarcus Russell (I'm from the N.O. and a LSU fan and had/have family members that went there) and also has had many challenges in my life from the beginning. So when people try to pile on somebody without even knowing their story. I know how it is and have been treated that way. So I understand, cause I get the same treatment.

This is a tragic story and I feel for JaMarcus so much because I have dealt with the aftermath of mental breakdowns from close family members. But at the same time, he really should have considered therapy. This is brings up another issue. The issue that men have this whole stigma against getting help for their mental health. Keep it inside. Don't go to therapy. You're weak if you do so. This is an absolutely destructive mentality. JaMarcus might have been able to cope with his losses in a more healthy way if he did get the help he sorely needed. But instead, he decided to turn to drugs. And he didn't get help until his career was already over.

People just sit on couches and in stadiums and talk mad shit not knowing what people really go through in their life, hell they even forget athletes are regular people too and its pretty annoying that people are that way but its the cruel world we live in. But what i can say about my Jamarcus is he took all the criticism in stride and these days hes making sure the youth are headed in the right direction and that its water in the cooler instead of drank.

I understand they are just people which is why this crazy ass "ice cold soda accident" doesn't add up. I was a big fan of JaMarcus and wanted him to ball out. Sounds like he had a bunch of yes men around him and still do all I hear is excuses. I get it his family died. I lost my pops before my senior season of college ball. He was an addict. Why not tell the team this? Get the help go to rehab and come back stronger? why just blame everyone else? the coaches were mean to him? come on fam we ain't going for that it's a 2 way street take accountability

Man, crazy I never knew this whole backstory about him. He had everything against him while he was on top of the world. That is a lot for a young man to deal with. What a shame the coaching let him down too. The way you and he look at things as a blessing when it seemed like a curse is amazing. We all rise and fall, fall and rise, and rinse and repeat. That's life. Some higher and lower than others. Glad he is now that mentor for those kids, and I am sure he is to them, what he needed himself. Much Love.

Okay I know we all go through terrible things and I’m not any different, but I have to still get myself on track. It’s not easy for any us but if you want to stay there it becomes your choice. I just made a choice after 30 years of all the hurt and pain of my life to get myself up any put on my big boy pants 👖 and stop hurting myself and family. I wasn’t a #1 draft pick but I was #1 to my family friends etc. I come from a abusive family father especially, of course I abused, I was homeless I abused drugs etc. I wanted to be a firefighter or sports athlete who knows. You imagine what J Russ what he what have become in my shoes? He’s still this day is blaming others and situations, sometimes we have to grow up at whatever age that is. Yes seek help from others who have overcome similar problems and situations. But it’s never to late to seek help and grow up and I say that in a good way. GROW UP
