Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (also known as Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II) is an arcade-style action game co-developed by Factor 5 and LucasArts. The second of three games in the Rogue Squadron series, it was published by LucasArts and released as a launch title for the Nintendo GameCube on November 9, 2001. Set in the fictional Star Wars galaxy, the game spans all three original trilogy Star Wars films. The player controls Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. As the game progresses, Skywalker, Antilles and the Rebel Alliance fight the Galactic Empire in ten missions across various planets.
Gameplay
Similar to its predecessor, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Rogue Leader is a fast-paced, flight action game. Each of the game's ten levels introduces mission objectives such as search and destroy or protection that must be completed to progress to the next level. Enemy aircraft are primarily composed of TIE fighters, Imperial shuttles and Star Destroyers. Ground defenses are more varied and include three different walkers, various laser turrets, probe droids and stormtroopers. The heads-up display features a health meter, a radar, an ammunition count for secondary weapons and the "command cross" that allows the player to give limited instructions to their wingmen. The player can control seven craft in the base game: X-wing, A-wing, Y-wing, B-wing, Snowspeeder, the T-16 Skyhopper and the Millennium Falcon. Each vehicle offers a unique armament arrangement, as well as varying degrees of speed and maneuverability. The game initially restricts the player to a particular craft for each level; however, after a level is completed, it can be replayed with any available craft. Some levels offer the player the option to change craft mid-level. Eleven bonus power-ups are hidden in different levels throughout the game. These bonuses improve a craft's weapons, durability and targeting computer and are applied to each eligible craft for the remainder of the game. The player's performance is measured throughout the game, and performance statistics are checked after each level against three medal benchmarks. Each benchmark contains six categories: completion time, number of enemies destroyed, shot accuracy, number of friendly craft and structures saved, number of lives lost and targeting computer efficiency. If a player's performance meets or exceeds one of the level's three benchmarks in all six categories, a medal-bronze, silver or gold-is awarded on completion. Acquiring these medals promotes the player's rank and helps unlock hidden content.[6] Once the player completes all of the training missions and achieves gold medals on all 15 levels, the opportunity to activate "Ace Mode" is awarded. The player may then achieve one more medal per level by completing them with this mode activated.
Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader is set in the fictional Star Wars galaxy, where a war is fought between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance. The game spans all three original trilogy Star Wars films: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles have recently joined the Alliance to help defeat the Empire and restore freedom to the galaxy. The game opens with an opening crawl resembling those featured in the Star Wars films. Further story details are presented through the game's instruction manual, pre-mission briefings, character conversations during the game, in-game cut scenes and movie clips lifted directly from Star Wars films. The game begins with the Rebel Alliance launching an attack on the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's largest space station. In a reenactment of A New Hope 's climactic battle, Luke Skywalker destroys the Death Star after firing into an exhaust port. Skywalker and Wedge Antilles then accompany a Rebel supply convoy from Yavin IV to Hoth. When attempting to rendezvous with a second convoy in the Ison Corridor, they discover that the convoy has been destroyed and are ambushed. After fighting off the attack, the Rebels continue on to Hoth. As depicted in The Empire Strikes Back, Imperial forces locate the Rebel base on Hoth and begin an invasion. Despite Skywalker crash-landing, Rogue Squadron is able to hold off the Imperial attack force long enough for the Rebel base to sufficiently evacuate.

Anyone else use to play this mission (and others) only through the cockpit view? Man that was a blast! I'd use the C stick to look around. I even learned how to trip AT-AT's using cockpit view! I had too much time on my hands as a kid, haha.
The changes to the AI in this game are pretty cool. In the original Rogue Squadron, enemy fighers were basically on rails, flying around the maps on a predetermined path, and would only shoot you if you got in front of them. In this game, fighters' paths are more organic, and they'll actually follow you around. Plus, if they're flying in formation, shooting the fighter in front will cause the tailing fighters to scatter. Pretty cool additions to enemy behavior.
Amazing what an increased framerate and resolution can accomplish. The game looks like a solid single A studio quality game, and thats a huge compliment for such an older title.
Still fire up Rogue Squadron on the N64 from time to time, what a game
I still remember some of the cheat codes to that game.
The snow speeder lasers are much stronger in this than they were in Shadows of the Empire.
Hoth was filmed in Beautiful Finse Norway
R.I.P. Lucas Arts.

R.I.P. Factor 5
R.I.P. Star Wars
Pretty good looking game for 2001!
aren't you dead?...
+user1nation Nah that was a cover up.
+user1nation its a conspiracy
This game had the best graphics in the world at the time of its release. Even PC games didn't look this good in 2001.
Best graphics on that generation.
XBOX > GAMECUBE > PS2
Some people don't realize this, but tripping the AT-AT's take skill.
The camera snap at the start takes the most adjustment
I had it on GameCube. It took practise!
Soo tru I played this game when I was a little kid holy crap it was pain in the ass
not really
@@camptube7621 Have it on GC still and play on Wii U, can't tell you the number of times I've been on one of the last passes and slammed into the AT-AT's head.
This looks really crisp, have to give this emulator a look

No one can run this level except this guy and no one bothers aswell. Amazing.
This looks really good for an old school arcade style shooter.
I wish they would bring back this quality to games.
What I would do to see this series revived someday in the future (and not by EA).
Best game of my childhood
Toasty Bandit jj
NICELY DONE!! I LOVE your Star Wars videos!! Thanks for all the uploads! :-)
Jansen really did make a good shot.
This game and Rogue Squadron III had the best and most movie accurate version of Hoth, ever!!! Not even the OG Battlefront games came close!!
Still one of my favourite games of all time.
Holy shit, you play as a snowspeeder then X-wing in the same level? I need this game.
You can do the same in the new battlefront btw ;p
Yeah, but it's a shit game, Magical Gamer.
+Sfinna If you could explain what you specifically mean with "shit" i'm open for a discussion.
Less depth than Battlefront 2 overall, removal of classes, butchering of the vehicle system (Tokens, really?) butchering of Hero system (again, tokens?), no gameplay variety, and plagued with DLC which should've been in the game at the start minus Rogue One. No galactic conquest, their Instant Action is horrible, every update brings about more bugs than fixes. No modding support.... I can name more.
While you are correct about this. I do personally belive that the game is worth it, if you are a star wars fan. It honestly has to do with what peoples personal preferences is. You might not like it, that's fine. While i think EA/Dice could've done better, it still is a good game for what it is. Also the Hero system. Perhaps they have made the Hero Token system to sort of like.. Once you are playing as a hero it's going to feel magical, special. In SWBF2 It felt sort of magical to begin with, but once you start messing everyone up, you get hero after hero 1 min after another, makes it sort of boring, you know..?
That's just my theory.
when y was a kid y play this games and this is one of mi favorites dude do more plz
still better than the new battlefront
the old battlefront is better than the new battlefront.
damn right
Really sad how a game from 2001 captures what Star Wars fans actually want better than a battlefront game in 2015 after waiting like 10 years for a battlefront sequel. And on top of all of that, battlefront 2 was even worse. Sad.
All they needed was to make this or orginal battle front with modern graphics . Did you guys ever see the orginal battlefront 3 we never got ..you could fly from ground to space in battle

I love Denis Lawson voiced Wedge for this game
His voice is legendary!
I do wish they could have gotten Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and James Earl Jones to voice their characters... At the very least use audio clips from the movies...
My father fought and died at the battle of Hoth. RIP dad.
I just realized that the narrator in this game is the same narrator in Empire At War!!!!!

Voice actor Denny Delk
One of the best games EVER!
it runs incredibly well. so surprised this was in 2001
If I remember, you can blow up the ATAT if, after tripping it, you fire at the spot behind the head and above the neck.
This was my favourite game as a kid!
Didn't know it could look this good.
Mission Complete!
Gold medal!
Rock the eff on, yo!
Enjoy!
I think this is gameplay most of us who bought activision's "Empire Strikes Back" in the 80s had in mind :D
I used to play this all the Time I enjoyed it very much.
I remember playing this at kmart
I really don't understand how this looks so frickin good. My computer is more than capable of playing both GameCube and Wii games (and I just started to venture into PS2) but for some reason THIS game and its sequel are REALLY difficult to play correctly. It stutters and looks choppy at times. It isn't even close to this quality.
My favorite is the 64 version... something about that version that just rocks...
+funkyflights ditto to that but factor 5 just rocks RIP :(
That N64 Rogue Squadron was my favorite because the settings were unique and scorimg wasnt as strict. you lose as many lives as you wanted and it didn't hurt your score
Rogue Squadron 1 Is Cool And Will Always Be The Staple Of Our Childhooda
@@freiza79 You should have tried Rogue Squadron on PC with a pair of active shutter 3d glasses. Best game ever.
please give me a step by step instruction on what exactly you set your settings to. I've been trying for years and nothing stops the horrible stuttering
played this game relentlessly.
2020 and the still can make a game like this
How did you do it so that I ran in dolphin, I run slowly despite the fact that my computer is gamer which configuration do you use?
I would always fly down and fire a lazer burst at the AT AT's before flying between their legs in cockpit view. Just like in the movie.
You killed a TIE bomber by _ramming_ it.
+Spudtron98 Did this like four-thousand times in Rogue Squadron back then in my childhood.
+Spudtron98 As a kid I always called that maneuver "The Ship Crush."
The AI Ties Always Bump Into You If You Cross Their Flight Path

"We copy Commander Skywalker sir, we can't do more"
I’m amazed that is an actual thing you can do
J'étais,et suis toujours fan de ce jeu 👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️🇫🇷
i tried this before but i think had trouble setting up the xbox controller, could you help with that please? it never worked on the pc my fav game of all time really.
Are the game textures modded?
They look incredible for the game's age!! Unique to this day
Bro i always watched this when I was young
this reminds me of star wars battlefront 1
I had a game like this and I was stuck on the part when you had to tie it
The Incom T65-B X-Wing is the fighter that destroyed the Death Star!
I got the gamecube just because of that game, graphics blew me away
I still play this one gamecube!!! 2018 BITCHES!!!
Hopefully someone comes out with a video on how to play this on the new Arcade1up Star Wars cabinet, that would be epic with its flight yoke...
Hi, what are your computer specs? I can't make it work so well.
Dem graphics!
Looks better then star fox for Wii U
It has references in it from Esb
What control setup do you use? I must know.
Holy fuck I forgot just how good this game is
This guy just murdered a bunch of probe droids out for a lovely winter stroll!
I want this to be rereleased on switch so bad! Anyone else ever finish this mission without the X-Wing so you can see the Snowspeeder fly away in the ending cut scene?
Who else noticed they reused the Death Star explosion for the probe droid?
Nostalgia...
❤SOME KANADAIANS HAVE JOINED THE EMPIRE!!🖤🖤🖤
Anyone here know how to stop the game from stuttering on Dolphin?
I loved this game. Gonna hafta seeif emulator is available for Pi.
NIcely done!
cockpit perspective was always much more immersive imho
Man upscaled resolutions and aa and stuff make these old cube games look as good as ps3 era games
Nice
Rip snowtroopers from AT-AT falling
amazing!
+VidGames Can you list the specs of your pc? I can run a lot of games on Dolphin, including Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Zelda Twilight Princess, Smash Brothers Melee, and others. I can even run Wii games like Skyward Sword and Mario Galaxy in 2-4x native res. But I can't run this game. Any idea why? Bad audio stutter and terrible framerates.
Specs: Windows 7 x64
12 gigs ram
i7 quad core 3.4 Ghz CPU
Radeon 6770 1g DDR5
Dolphin 4.0-8863
The ship and vehicle graphics are rough in this as opposed to the third game.
Thank
What is your system configuration?
Why did you neglect your squadmates like that?
why u kamikeze into a tie-bomer?
That armor is too damn strong for blasters my man!!
Looks pretty good but what's with the AT-AT's? They're covered in back and I don't remember that in the Gamecube version
Pretty sure it's cause of the emulator. Can't always run the games perfectly.
the outlining of the AT-AT are too rough Plus When the AT-AT falls the back legs Looked like they broken their back legs when they fall on the front
That armor is too strong for blasters!
This looks incredible!
This whole trilogy needs a remaster on current consoles.
Only problem is that it would be remastered by EA and they would find a way to ruin it.
This Game aged well
i think the jedi fighters sound like gru's plane
Well, hello from 2020
Why can't we get a updated version?
Be cool if they remasterd this for ps4 and xone
When games were playable and not just some battle royale crap.
they need to make a good Battle of Hoth for Star Wars BF2
There should be new rouge squad game play as empire, new order, and droids prequel trilogy use ships, tanks and walkerS
Is it just me or the AT-AT's in this game look a lot bigger?
It's weird how bad this looks at 1080p. Maybe I'm just used to the CRT blur but the game's textures scream overstretched.
neverable2 It's not you, it's the graphics replacement pack he's using.
It looks like total _shit._ If he were using the standard graphics, it would look
far more natural and pleasing.
***** Oh thank God.
neverable2 The funny part is, they say it's an HD-pack for the textures. All they _upgraded_ was a bunch of space background graphics that don't even look like something out of Star Wars.
The "replacements" for the starfighter/starship/ground vehicle textures are just the original textures with a terrible contrast effect added to them, to give the illusion of high-definition because of the high contrast between colors. The resulting effect looks highly unpleasant and unnatural.
I even have a comparison here! iteachvader.deviantart.com/art/HD-Textures-513472173
***** Alrighty, I'll check it out.
***** What follows is subjective. This is my opinion, and I am not stating it as fact.
I got a good look at the updated version, and it still leaves a lot to be desired, to be honest.
The starships look like they were made out of a computer screen error, and the starfighters still look either too pale and incorrectly colored (X-wings, Y-wings) or too high in contrast (TIEs). The laser effects are very lacking in depth, making them feel smaller. The space backdrops are _too_ saturated in depth and vibrancy. It's generally unappealing, and doesn't look like Star Wars.
Bear in mind that I never played this game much, so nostalgic preference plays no role here. I played it once back in 2001 when I was 6, and never played it again until this year. I've been exposed to the original textures just as much as the new ones, and prefer the originals because the textures were _designed_ specifically to look as Star Wars as possible. That's why they look best, even at high resolution. The developers took directly from the source material and made a game from it.
If you were able to hack the game and emulator to allow for far higher-resolution textures and effects, and were able to recreate the originals in high fidelity with no alteration in graphics contrast, I guarantee that the results will receive universal acclaim from Rogue Squadron fans all over.
The high res textures end up making it look worse overall the way they don't mesh with the level's lighting.
I got to the Hoth mission and the game slows down and the sound is distorted. Anyone know a fix for this?
Hao do you find that game
seems to remember playing this on my old N64. Wasnt this good looking tho
+Hr. Djuvik That was likely to be Shadows of the Empire.
+Spudtron98 Or ya know, the first rogue squadron. Both had the Battle of Hoth. But man was shadows good.
was it made for Pc as well!?
