Loved it! A book that occupies your thoughts long after you’re done with it.
The “slow” parts didn’t bug me because I was so immersed with the characters and their world. The book could’ve been 500 pages longer and I would’ve happily sat through it. Reading it was a complete experience. It did help that the chapters were short. Had they been longer, maybe it would’ve been harder to digest.
The Sea of Flames added to the story for me. The author establishes it at the very beginning, so I was expecting it to play a big part in the story.
The jumping forward so many years shortly after Werner’s death kind of took me out of it for a bit, but as I kept reading, I accepted it and got used to it; plus I really loved the very last scene.
Overall an incredibly complex, emotional, profound, and thought-provoking novel with a lot to say. 10 out of 10 for me.

I for one, really enjoyed the ending. I think I would have felt like my emotions had been taken advantage of by the author if they ended it early.
As for the diamond, I like your perspective of it being magical realism. However I also think it’s important to recognize that there are real life problems other than the war still occurring even during the war. For them, being museum workers, the diamond is a real thing for them. Bad things may have happened to them anyway, but I feel like the diamond gave them both hope and fear during their lives.

    • @ebnovels
      @ebnovels  4 роки тому +3

I definitely think it played a role in their lives. I guess I was more surprised at how often the book had the characters (and potentially the reader) wondering if the “curse” was playing a role. Which-like I said-I think there’s tons of symbolism behind all of that, I just found myself completely caught off guard 😅

I love the writing but I was kind of disappointed towards the end I really wish there was more interaction between Marie Laure and Werner. Nothing over the top like a Hollywood movie scene, but just a little more considering we were literally building up these two characters throughout the whole book up until when they meet.

I personally thought this book was AMAZING, but I also agree with you a little about the ending. The first time jump caught me off guard, and left me slightly unsatisfied - I know the interaction between Marie-Laure and Jutta was meant to be one of those instances where the lack of words speaks volumes, but I didn’t really ‘feel’ that, if that makes sense. I just felt like more could’ve been done; the scene with Frederick, though, absolutely wrenched my heart. But anyway, the first time jump caught me off guard, so it’s safe to say the second one definitely did too. It was nice to see that Marie-Laure ended up living a long life, and I thought the last scene got across a beautiful message about human connections and how people live on within us, even if we only knew them briefly - but I also felt like it was unnecessary. I think if there were going to be any time jumps at all, the first one should’ve been expanded upon. Overall, while I didn’t love the time jumps, the writing in them was phenomenal, and a passage that stuck out to me was the one in the final scene where it describes Madame Manec, Etienne, Werner, and her father all in the sky, or something along the lines of that (funny I say it stuck out to me but I forgot what exactly it was haha. Either way I was moved by it’s beauty).
As for the magical realism/diamond discussion, I find what you say very interesting. I totally understand it and am actually pretty surprised I never felt that way while reading it, I guess I was just lost within all the words maybe. Definitely something I want to reflect on.
And fun fact, this is the only book that has ever made me cry.

Curious, for me the ending was what made me love the book the way i do, something about the memoirs of the caracthers living their lifes after all that, gives realism to everything, as if war was just a chapter of their lifes instead of the whole reason to live.

I've started telling people to not expect much from the gem. Like it's a little part of the story, but don't expect it to do THAT much 😂. Like I know it's definitely got its role, but it's more of a plot device and a "is it doing this? Is it not?" Sort of a thing? But I was so drawn to Werner and Marie Laure and I loved their characters so much!
And also it definitely should've ended somewhere around 20 pages before it ended. Like right after a certain gut punch. It ahoidlve ended. It ending drew out so long I didn't get to sit in the sadness of the one part long enough.

I liked the writing, but the story was kind of boring there in the middle. Like you said, it gets to that point where you wanna just get to the present day already! Part 8 hooked me back in, but part 11 should have been the end of the story.
Also, maybe due to the writing style or the story jumping all over the place, i didn't feel connected to the characters. When deaths happened, i didn't feel it as much as in other books I've read recently (ie mistborn).

I liked the female protag the chapter she was introduced, but afterwards it was so broken up i lost interest. Then, i googled the plot and found out about the diamond and i went: what? Not my cup of tea definitely. I felt the story could have been character driven on the two protag instead of fantasy element.

I wanted to read this with you guys over on Byzans. And I got about 100 pages in and had to put it down. For me, I just couldn’t connect with the characters. I didn’t feel anything for them and I felt like I had to care about them because of the kind of book it was, if that makes sense.

I am not sorry that I read the Wikipedia after reading half of the sample chapters, and when I saw the diamond as the main conflict, I was very disappointed. Elliot said it better in the vid, I think the inclusion of a diamond is bizarre, the author could have written a good story without the diamond. I think the story is good enough with the two protag, also the villain sounded uninteresting to me. The diamond also reminds me of Titanic, Jack and Rose and I don't like it. :/

I would’ve also liked more interaction between Werner and Marie-Laure. The short time they spend together was really engaging and beautiful. Wouldn’t have minded a lot more of that.
