I just love the covers, feels oddly reminiscent of 90s and early 00s fantasy covers, but with amazing art. Wish we got more covers with illustration instead of photo comps but I understand the reasons why its not common.
I knit, crochet, paint a little, sew a little etc…..being a crafter and reading a book about magical crafting. Magical sewing of all things! Not like giant weapon forgeries or something lol. These books are so so fun and sweet. If you got crafters in your life who also love fantasy-this is a perfect gift.
I absolutely LOVED the first book. It got me out of an almost 2 year reading slump. Everything about it I loved: the setting, the plot, the characters, the romance, and the overall celestial magic theme. It was my kind of book. The second one I did not enjoy so much only because I do not care for the “main character grapples with growing evil inside them” trope, I feel it drags on for too long. But I was extremely satisfied with the ending! Everything came together neatly. I’m still thinking about the first book months after reading it! ☺️
I've never clicked so fast on a video of yours 😂 This has recently been on my TBR, so it's really convenient that you post a review for this duology. Thanks so much, Elliot!!! 💝
I love how you describe things in this video! I would like to read this duology but I was not sure... Now I know its exactly something I would like to explore! Thank you! 🤗
I think you would really like the "Pope Joan". It's very unknown and very very good. Not just about historical events but it mostly feels like fantasy and is freaking awesome.
this is my first video of yours and you're absolutely wonderful to watch. i've been really wanting to read Spin the Dawn so i loved learning more about the books through you and I'm absolutely stoked. and lmao i LOVE when writers go into detail on the characters' fashion....but that's probably why my channel is called Bowties and Books lmao
I definitely agree with that very first thing you said, expectations for this book really need to be corrected. It was basically told to me that its "Project runway meets Mulan." What bugged me about this when I read the first one is: 1)The project runway competition ends before the halfway mark. 2)There isnt really good detail into HOW she makes the dresses or anything like that. And the competition is more avoiding her fellow contestants than crafting good clothing. 3)The Mulan comparison really just starts and ends at Shes a female, and has to be a male. Its not as compelling as Mulans reasons. 4)I would straight up call this a romance. The second half of the book killed me because it was practically entirely focused on romance and it caused alot of cliches and weird moments. (Sorry that last part shows my dislike for the book lol) Im glad you were able to enjoy it! I was disappointed i couldnt and it threw me for a loop lol
I dont think this book is going to help you with that AT ALL. Its description of how it makes the clothes is practically non existent, as an artist, it was one of my bigger gripes for the book. The most it explains is the materials thats it. So she will write about how the fabric feels or its colors. Im pretty sure she doesnt even describe the shape of the dress or anything, again, just the patterns and whatever is designed on it. Find something else if you want to learn about dresses and stuff lol
I really liked this duology too and want to buy physical copies for myself. I also turned my sister in these books too. It’s so fun and sweet and wonderful.
I usually don't like first person (I don't know why) but I've been trying to get back into reading first person. I love fashion and cute love stories, along with that fairy tale feel, so I may pick this up! :)
I picked it up cause honestly, those are maybe my favorite book covers i've ever seen XD. Not finished with the first yet and i will say that while i do enjoy it i was kinda (mild spoilers) hoping for more of a tie in between the magic and the tailoring if that makes sense. like i was hoping there would be magic to the sewing to the dying that sort of thing whereas it ended up being more just kind of a catch-all kind of magic that just sorta happens. Still enjoying it though that just was the only mild disappointment
Your so spot on with the magic scissors, I just reread my review to remember why I didnt like it and I ended up saying I thought the scissors were a mistake. Because at first she cant use them because it diminishes her artistic morality, and then she just uses them as a mcguffin to do anything :/
@@lucaleone4331 Agreed! Like so far there's not understanding of the magic or getting better or practice. The scissors just act like you say as a MacGuffin to solve the problem and i was hoping it wouldn't go that way
@@jessenadeau8869 Your comment on "getting better or practice" is what made me dislike the Mulan comparison so much. What I liked about Mulan is that she sacrificed herself to save her father, thats why she took his place. And she was a TERRIBLE warrior at first until she got better and was an amazing soldier in spite of everyone thinking a woman couldnt, and more importantly that she never belonged in the box her people put her in. In this one, Maia was already an amazing Tailor. There wasnt a reason she shouldnt be able to enter the competition. She didnt get any better or struggle to make the clothes. No one said she couldnt do it, they just think a woman shouldnt own their own store? For some reason her trials were all physical instead of creative. What I wish would have happened is instead of Edan we had Maias brother (recently broken by war) join her and HE would do the physical challenges in order to overcome his past trauma while Maia focused on the creative aspects of the dresses. The book just wasnt compelling :/
I read the 2nd book today and really liked the whole series, it’s kind of a cute wholesome series despite the demons and political issues. Or maybe it just seemed wholesome coz the book I finished before this one was Red Sister? 🤔
Hah, I was really on the fence to buy this trilogy this week so this review is really welcome. :D You convinced me to buy it! Small question, I've never read YA before but would like to start. Is this a good try (like would you call this more new adult) or is it more on the younger side?
Edit: sometimes it is amazing what one has to go or put oneself through to realize that in fact one really wishes for a happy ending rather than just a mere ending..
I enjoyed the first book, but for some reason couldn't stand the second! I ended just skimming it to find out what happens in the end. I enjoyed the cultural and whimsical aspects of the duology, but otherwise it landed a little flat for me
I disagree that its balanced. Read more reviews, especially skewed toward 3 and below. The negatives they point out is usually because of its romance. Its heavily romance dependent. The entire last half of the first book is all romance which creates awkward scenes that force said romance and the fantasy takes a back seat. Most of the book is her Significant other helping her with most of her issues, which leans more into the romance than fantasy.
I just love the covers, feels oddly reminiscent of 90s and early 00s fantasy covers, but with amazing art. Wish we got more covers with illustration instead of photo comps but I understand the reasons why its not common.
Tran Nguyen is the artist. I love her work. I actually only knew about the book from her IG lol.

same here!! i didn’t finish the second book cause it didn’t give the same vibe as how amazing the first one was.

I love this duology! I don’t normally read romance, but for some reason I love this one.
Your 'Confused Reader' voice is my favorite thing.
My mom is reading this duology, and she's really liked it. I recommended your channel since I think you guys have the same taste in a lot of books
Wow, this review was so informative, now I really know what it's going to be like, and I'll definitely pick it up when I want a love story! Thank you!
I love how you describe things in this video! I would like to read this duology but I was not sure... Now I know its exactly something I would like to explore! Thank you! 🤗
I loved them both I'm so happy with this whole doulogy!
I don't usually like romance, but you made this seem so interesting! Gonna check it out! Thanks!

I loved the first one so much but for some reason I can't finish the second one 😅 but I'll try it again one day. Love your channel as always

I had the exact same experience!
Same here, the second book felt very rushed and the pacing was off IMO. It was so hard to finish
I really need to learn more about dresses and stuff for writing, so this duology sounds like the thing I need.
For writing your own novel?

Great review thankyou
Yeah, I picked up Spin the Dawn on a whim and I ended up loving it! :)
Every time I see that Elliot posted a video I like drop everything and see it immediately haha
Oh my gosh, the books are wesome...I couldn't put them down❤️❤️❤️❤️ I will never forget Maia and Eden...😭
Ok I didn't know spin the Dawn was gonna be a duology, even more excited for unravel the dusk now!!
They sound lovely
Thank you I needed this. Had a terrible day.
I’m sorry about that!
Tnx. It's going higher on my tbr
I bought this book for that cute cover 😁.
But it was really nice.

I'd love to see this book turned into a movie or TV series ...

Is it a good series to start for beginners to fantasy?
Haha i love food and clothes discriptions
Which Camera do you use?
Hey I have a small doubt
Should I have to read Spin the dawn before reading unravel the dusk
If I do so will I understand the story ?
I enjoyed the first book, but for some reason couldn't stand the second! I ended just skimming it to find out what happens in the end. I enjoyed the cultural and whimsical aspects of the duology, but otherwise it landed a little flat for me

Is it more romance than fantasy?
