Great review. I appreciate how you showed all the effects and compared. Seems like no other reviewers of these thought to do this lol. I’ll be interested in what you have to say after use. I just got 4 of the ape sticks today for some eye candy. They look great and musik mode beats all other sound active modes by a mile.
I used them last night to light up the back wall of a karaoke stage. I got compliments on the lighting. Easy setup, easy teardown, lightweight and easy to transport. Also easy to recharge. Exactly what I was looking for. If I had one wish it would be someway to offset the colors when you do a color fade. Since it's an RF remote they all switch to color fade in unison and do the exact same thing. The only way I've found to get around this is by shutting the lights off one at a time and turning them back on. This offsets the timing and gives a rainbow effect. You could probably do this somewhat with groups as well. But I don't want to set a bunch of different groups. I'll do another video once I get a chance to use them more so I can give my updated thoughts. Also now I'm thinking I might need some sticks too! 😃
@@TheAngrySoundTech yeah agree on the color fade. Would also be nice if you could master/slave certain pairs while in musik mode. Unfortunately groups don’t work that way. Overall I’ve been very happy with the sticks and bought the trifecta (3 coins + coinbank) for behind me. I want to either get some cans or maxis for uplighting but still trying to decide if it’s better to have double the lights but 1/3rd as bright ie cans or have less lights but triple power ie maxis. Looking forward to your followup.
I love the effect lenses because they are not your typical uplighting, which makes them stand out from the crowd. I use a combo of the cans and my maxi’s to create the best lighting affect. I just picked up the W-app which opens up your flexibility even more.
I'm curious about that as well. I haven't had them out to a real venue with good high ceilings yet. Just one karaoke gig with them under my belt so far. But once I get a little more use on them I'll make a new video with more real world use details.
@@TheAngrySoundTech i know the maxi are the best but you can buy 24 of the cans for the price of 12 maxi lights so could u just put more of the cans on a wall to make it work just like the maxi for less money and more lights to have extra of ?
They would work but you would obviously need to also order the 10 degree lenses which add more to the cost of the lights. And while they could work I'll tell you why I wouldn't use them as room uplighting. I only use mine behind me and sometimes behind a head table at a wedding. But even at a head table you can run into issues. They are tall and skinny so one little tap of a foot against it and they get knocked over. The last wedding I put them behind a head table I was setting up kicked over cans every 30 minutes during the dance. Also they kind of look like little flashlights to kids. This is a big reason I try to only set them up behind me. Once kids get a hold of them and start flashing other kids you'll be wondering where your lights ended up at the end of the night. I've never had this problem with bigger uplights that don't resemble a flashlight. Also since you only have one 10 watt led instead of three you won't get as much throw up a wall which could be an issue if you want the lights to show floor to ceiling in a venue with 18 foot walls.
@@TheAngrySoundTech kids are not a issue since i dont do weddings ...i do mostly grown up type of events so i dont have to worry about kids picking them up and playing with them ....i was just saying i can buy 24 of the cans for the price of 12 maxi lights ...since i you 24 for the price u can use more on a well to help since only 10w vs the 45w of the maxi
I skipped those because they are too easy for high schoolers to steal, I went with freedom pars. Way too tempting for school kids and no, I'm not going to pack at a school event. LOL
@@TheAngrySoundTech i ended up doing that but they are way too expensive just for a back light and it did not make sense as you can use any loght for that ....Maxis I;d buy them but they are still a bit iffy easy to grab ...sticks maybe but a little over priced and these can things need those plastic sheilds to wrap around .to the wall to hide em away ... basically its a shame though because they are good.
best thing about the lights is the remote lol - simple to use and you dont have to point it at anything for starters unlike others and its and it has a much longer range than any other remote and works on all their other fixtures ....worst thing about these lights in particular is their messa/stealability (making words up here) if placed around a venue without some sort of sheild covers especally...
I did a wedding dance last weekend and a little kid specifically walked up to my cans and proceeded to kick each one over. I like these things but you have to keep them away from people.
@@TheAngrySoundTech Yes the lights are great but I have had same issues as you and worse... A lot of DJs and people looking at buying them overlook this point - they see how great they are but using them in the real world is different than a review, .I had 3 damaged ...then had one stolen ...then just sold them ...shame really ....the idea of having them to place around a venue ... but defeat the object if you cant use them safely ....get them damaged or stolen you have worked for nothing and its a lot of money just to use for a facade light or backdrop I think.- personally .. I would possibly buy more maxis again as now I have the ( idea for you ) white plastic sheilds to put around and guard them in venues or ape sticks if they were cheaper and whilst I think the cans and maxis are great these things come with drawbacks - its a shame but they just too fuckaroundable. My personal advice to you sack them off sell and try and get money back n invest in a better effect ...something like say a 2.5 wifi laser cube instead - it will make you more money n gain you cudos - work in the long run ...cheers
@@byromtaylor6482 That's why I want to buy more Ape Labs tubes that way I can use the steal plate that comes with it when I just want to use the Can by it's self. The plate is pretty heavy, and it's something I doubt people will be able to easily mess with. Also Apple has came out with their own small tracking device that you can use for these which I plan on also buying,
@@the_sound_of_art Hi there mmm that I think needs a re think as it seems like a lot of messing ...as good as the cans are I would not buy again and am done with uplights altogether I think though the maxis are great and the sticks it just wrong/sad having to buy a tracker for your goods... I would go with the plastic sheilds These are quite expensive too though
@@byromtaylor6482 The plus side is that I actually want to use the tubes. It's a win win either way. As for the Maxi's I'll just stick on Tripods. I have considered the shields too btw. I may just make my own shields. Sorry you had a bad experience. It's a sad situation, and I can relate to having things stolen. As for the trackers I don't really mind it. I rather be safe than sorry. Or I can just have a family member come along, and keep an eye out for my lights. That's also something I could do! I still want the tubes though! So that wont change.
So since you have been using these for over a year now. Have you actually tried using them for around the room uplighting?

Thanks for making this video!

To what extent are the ape cans waterproof? Can you run them outside in the rain or just wrap some stretch film around them?
On that more traditional uplighting lense, how far up the wall do they show? Compared to other traditional uplighting. Thanks for the review.

Thank you for this video! In your opinion, do you think the Ape Labs Maxi lights are "proper" uplights for a wedding?
Yes! Those would be the ones to get if you're doing up lighting around a room.
