On Secret Touch, Neil seems to be expressing the pain of losing a loved one. The lyric " There is no love without pain" seems to refer to this explicitly. On Earthshine, Neil is expressing how we look for illumination when we are in a dark place. A lot of the lyrics on this album are Neil's reflections on coming out of a dark place and finding life again. It's pretty incomprehensible to lose your entire family in one year and be able to come out of it still intact and a contributor to society. Lot's of emotions in the lyrics and I feel they did a good job conveying it in the music.

For me, "the way out is the way in" is when you are experiencing life's challenges and realize that you have to go through it and face it head on being your "way out". Its kind of like having peace. It took me a long time to realize that Rush intentionally structured this song to have the peaceful measured opening and closing outro with all the chaos in the middle being the grief you have to go through to get to the other side. Just brilliant I love this song and this performance so much, I really think it is one of the unrecognized gems in their catalog, and you can see how much it means to Neil as he plays it. Basically the core of this song saved his life.

This song is one of those that I loved from the very first listen but it’s even more amazing when heard LIVE!!! That was a hard one.😪 I never got another cat but I cat sit a friend's cat alot so that I do get my cat fix. I love both of these songs and they have become favourites from their later albums. Vapor Trails is the first album after the hiatus due to Neil's tragedies. Neil did find love again in Carey Nutell whom he met in California when he was on his motorcycle ride. They had a daughter Olivia who Neil was teaching to drum. Unfortunately Neil didn't have too many years with his second family. 💔 as he to got sick. Neil's tragedies and his recovery are a huge influence on his writing on this album. I love the guitar work on Secret Touch. Alex is a genius! Of course all three of them are. There is a excellent live performance from Rio of Earthshine and also Ghost Rider. Their is a very poignant moment at the end of Ghost Rider in the Rio concert where Neil breaks his sticks. As for Alex singing sometimes it is actuality him and other times it is Geddy's voice being dubbed in. I think Alex could of been a pretty good singer if he had worked on his voice with a voice coach but I don't think he was interested. LOL Cheers 🇨🇦 ❤

Vapor Trails mastering was not up to the usual high standards of Rush recording masters, so they made up for it by releasing a remix in 2013. I followed the suggestion of many a few years back when I was collecting rush LP's, many were remasters, and I was told to get the Vapor Trails remix album, and it's production sounds as good as any albums I own from Rush, actually better because it came on a double LP that allowed for wider, deeper high-fidelity vinyl grooves. Though I have other Rush double LP's that this is true of as well. . I haven't attempted to listen to the original, though there are quite a few fans that like it and are sticking with it. Basically I was told it was recorded like the average modern recordings where they condense and amplify everything so it sounds better coming from the modern electronic devices the latest generation uses. But they forgot that most of the fan base still uses LP's or CD's listening through a full size home component hi-fi or surround system and it sounded bad through them. So if you decide to get this album, I too, suggest the remix version which says "remixed" on it, and is a white album without the black bars at the top and bottom, just the flaming ball.
The original sounds "muddy" to some. I like that it is very heavy and fuller in the mids. The remix is cleaner/clearer. I'm one of those "originalists," warts and all.
Ms Whimsy mentioned it prior to playing the song but just to re-clarify, this particular version of Earthshine was actually a different mix than the 2013 Remix that most people are familiar with. While that 2013 Remix was very good, the remix on this video Ms Whimsy used is even better by nearly everyone who compares it. The remix project was called Retrospective 3 (you see it on her opening graphic for the song, with the dalmatian). From what I can tell, Rush gave permission to have a dozen or so songs remixed. Two of them were on Vapor Trails (Earthshine and One Little Victory). So to be sure there is no confusion, this video uses the Retrospective 3 remix. And if you like remixed Rush music, give the other dozen or so songs on that Retrospective 3 remix a listen. They are really good. The kitty clearly approves.

I thought the remix of Vapor Trails was quite an improvement. The original was good songs, just lacked a little. Didn't read much about it. Loved "Counterparts".
When I first got VT I could not listen to more than 20 mins at a time, it gave me a headache. The remix is a vast improvement I can listen all the way through. It is still my least fav Rush album though, the songs just in the main do anything for me.
Two of the heaviest sounding Rush songs. For me Vapor Trails was one of my least favourite Rush albums. Though in context, a weak Rush album is still what a lot of bands could only dream of. Coming nearly 6 years after their previous studio album due to Neil's tragedies, I was just so glad to see them active as a band again that I certainly could forgive them for me not finding the album that great.
