  • The new PowKiddy RGB10 Max 3 Pro is an affordable and powerful handheld, and can run Linux-based custom operating systems like JELOS. But along with its potential to be a standout budget device, it has had quite a bumpy launch. In this video we'll go over all the things I like about this handheld, how to update its operating system, and some of the shortcomings that even community software can't fix.

Update: JELOS dropped an update today that fixes screen tearing on the PowKiddy RGB10 Max 3 Pro. There are still a lot of other quirks and bugs to work out, but this was probably the biggest dealbreaker for me, and I'm happy to see the progress.

Hey Russ, can I ask for a favour. I really like the pocketability test you do. You are the only person which actually does this real-world test and shows others, so kudos, and know this separates you from others.
My favour is: In the future can you also do the test alongside another device For example, put your phone in your pocket to show it fits in your pocket and is comfortable.... then show the device which might "technically fit" but is pretty uncomfortable, hence calling it as something as portable but not pocketable. You can throw it in your backpack to show it is portable, but then so is something else like the Valve SteamDeck, making the choice easy between the two.
Basically what you did, but with an extra 30 seconds in the video to give everyone a better idea. Let me know if this is a bad video idea, or not.
      Cheers mate, and happy gaming!

As for the audio issue, there's a good chance that you're just getting software distortion.
I would look at the system internal volume levels looking at the amplification sub-menu from Retroarch or even running alsamixer from a terminal if possible and set the volume/amplification to a lower level there.

i'm thinking i'll probably pick one up, my current retro handheld is an rg351p so a lack of a built in wifi chip just doesnt seem like a dealbreaker to me. after all this time with the 351, i'm really excited for the 5 inch screen. i'm optimistic about the prospects of improvements as far as the crashing goes, and the slow charging just isn't going to bother me really. where i'm feeling most let down is with the ergonomics and the lack of stacked shoulder buttons. i hope we can see a similarly spec'd anbernic version of this sometime in the future and that maybe they can improve on the ergonomics. the 405v they're showing off right now looks really nice, but i don't enjoy android handhelds nearly as much. if you look at the back of the 405v, it looks like it will be really comfortable to hold with those deep grooves. if we could get something like that but with this chipset dualbooting linux i'd be all over it. even without stacked shoulder buttons. but for the price, and the entertainment i'll get out of setting this thing up and enjoying the regular jelos updates, this is a can't miss for me. when we finally get this thing playing ps2 decently, and i'm confident we will, it's going to be a real beast in this price point. especially for those of us who don't like android. really excited to see about a potential anbernic handheld with this chipset, i just hope they don't mess it up by going android only. they seem really into android now...

That's really my biggest complaint about these devices, there is very little down time between them and they're all eerily similar. • @dronedoutrc5970
    @dronedoutrc5970 10 місяців тому +10

I believe I know the issue with the sound. The red film on the speakers is a protective film. The little pull tabs give it away that they should have been removed after installation. That could be the reason why it sounds so bad. The audio is just being forced against that film and it cause distortion.

The craziest thing about all these handhelds is that it seems like Retroid has some kind of iron-clad patent on stacked shoulder buttons on a retro emulation device. I'm kidding, but I don't get why we see so few of them, especially when they're geared towards PS1 games and higher where side by side buttons just don't make a lot of sense.

The better performance on the 2s are very interesting, but it's a bit more expensive (150 vs 133 for the powkiddy in Europe) and the smaller screen seems like a dealbreaker to me I would love to enjoy psp titles and I feel like 3.5 inches is a bit small. it would be my first handheld, but I don't mind tweaking a bit with it since I think it's a fun world to explore!

@@Autotrope I mean I understand the issue, but in the context of you clackity clacking away on the buttons, dpad and shoulder buttons, a little click will be as mindless as a mouse click. Its quite literally a non issue; if you dont like it thats fine, but its a really dumb reason to preclude you from getting something. Even typing on a laptop keyboard will make an analogous level of noise here lol

I re-flashed my RGB10 Max2 Pro with the Dec 1st 2023 version of JELOS following your instructions. It worked and the device boots and plays games! Great instructive video by the way! However my reason for flashing it was to enable the HDMI output. Still I can't use the Global Hot Keys [L1] + [Start] + [Select] buttons to toggle the HDMI output. I also tried a build from early in Feb. 2024, however the device would boot but would not display the Emulation Station. Does anyone have any tips for enabling the HDMI output? Is there a specific image I can flash? Are the hotkeys on the JELOS page for the HDMI toggle accurate for this device? Why isn't there a "Display Settings" menu option for toggling HDMI. When I press the [L1] + [Start] + [Select] buttons together the device just goes into the the normal menu that simply pressing the [Start] button would open.

I guess I'll have to wait for the next one. I would have paid an extra $15 if the wifi was built in. I use WINSCP to drop files into it, because it defeats having to swap in and swap out cards, then dealing with Window issues with exfat/fat32. I have a Linux laptop, but I dont always feel like pulling it out for simple file drops. The RG352V has built in wifi, and is not as powerful as this device, yet its easier to work with. Oh well.

I tried the Pickle OS in this handheld and the only way I could get things done was with a mouse. I also got wifi working so that was a good sign of things to come. What I could not do and that was a major bummer was to get AetherSX2 to recognize the actual buttons of the handheld. PES 6 booted fine but I could not get past the initial memory card configuration because the buttons are not recognized by the app... On JELOS the game was playable but with frame and audio quirks. I'm really hoping that the game will work better on future CFW's because PES is presumably a less demanding game than the final fantasy that TAKI UDON showed in his video running with no issues on JELOS. The current state of this handheld is "patient tinkerers only"...

Russ, is the RGB30 (1:1 screen horizontal handheld) on it's way to you by any chance? Taki made a feature on it but missed - what to me is obvious - plug a keyboard in and run the full Pico-8 fantasy console. Basically, can the RGB30 work as a sleek little mini-developer kit with built in controls for the games you write?

Hi, yes I have it. The Linux port of Pico-8 works when using the Raspberry Pi version of the app, but if I remember correctly it doesn't port the whole dev environment, just the splore menu (which I did test and it works great). I'll see what I can do about getting into the dev side with a keyboard before I make my review!

Honestly I like the device even when the GPU driver needs to be adjusted. The lack of wifi is sad but grown up with the RG350 and RG351P, I don‘t care about it.
The only thing which I don‘t like is for example under JelOS in the standard menu, you can hear the crackling sound from the speaker without doing anything on the device. Especially in a silent room it seems to be borderline noisy.
I will try to replace them with the X55 device or X28 and test it again.
I have the feeling that the speakers are fine and the issue is related to the board or driver

I seriously doubt that deleting the old partitions and creating a new NTFS partition is necessary at all before you flash the image to the drive. I'm pretty certain that any partitions on the drive will be deleted, and a new one created that is formatted during the write operation (most likely to ext4). That is unless you select a partition rather than a drive when using your imaging software (I don't know if Etcher actually supports writing to a partition instead of a drive or not).

Got my powkiddy x55 a week ago, was not expecting the enjoyment I've had so far. Jelos OS came updated as well as all of the classic Mario/DK/Zelda/Kirby games (even on n64), almost 300 n64 games to be specific.. A lot of it is bloat, but unlike the powkiddy rgb20s that bricked on me first time removing roms.. The X55 not only let me remove this bloat, it also let me add roms to the original TF2 sd card. I didn't even have to set n64 & dreamcast to performance mode, but for the best performance I would still recommend. I will now be content with waiting a year or two for something around the same price and can play ps2 and etc. This is a great handheld for any begninner and someone like me who has a few emulators and only likes to make minor tweaks. One small gripe is that he ps1 and psp selection on the x55 was a little small but nothing that can't be changed.
