Man they were tight on this one, a band at the height of their powers, three guitars, Hirst on drums, Garrett's voice, doesn't get any better than that...
Guitar mix and especially the bass sound so 25 year old scotch sort of smooth, not doobe doo doo. Done on a island and patched into mixers to record such perfect tones? now i believe in a god finally!! haha
Although it may not sound like it, but Jim and Martin have so much interplay going on between them. It's technical guitar brilliance on so many levels.
Yeah and Jims little "screams" on the guitar; unique i think to the oils. BUT, its Cliffords brilliant base lines and attention to precision and touch and you can hear every note matches the percussion instead of just "strumming" hmm as you hear after he left- enough said! Listen to Stand in Line, where he just does a little solo, he has such great feel gentleness too and i love his pulse he gives alongside Hursts energetic playing. Pity you never saw Clifford again play with the oils? or never seen him since. Jim and Martins playing crossing each other and in their parts and Jims piano, such great talent and the oils sound
It’s insane. The drumming and the guitars are insane. It’s there own language with the guitars. It just flows. I’ve seen it with Radiohead with there guitar work in some performances. It’s just a language.
Has to be a candidate for best gig ever. Remember seeing this on TV in 85 when I lived in Sydney. Forgotten just how good this was. Thanks for posting Skitizen
Great guitar parts with Martin playing a think fender constantly and Jim punching through loudly like little megaphone bursts and cliffords excellence touch on the Bass and you can hear his bass solo in Stand in Line near the end of the concert. Really top player and frankly i believe gave them part of their sound than any old bass player.
Saw them last night in Sydney. 15,000 people. Great set. Included this song, some classic hits and they even included Wedding Cake island in the encore. They were amazing. Pete's dancing is a little less frantic as he's slowed down, but the band was tight, Hurst a beast as usual and Garratt great. Still a great band live
Wow, what a performance! I saw them the year before at age 18 at Speers Point park near Newcastle. I had never seen speakers so tall and never left a concert more deaf or jazzed about life. I was so excited to buy Red Sails when it was released so I'd know the words to Generals Talk and Kosciusko, and the crowd in unison doing that fog the glass sound vocalised in Harrisburg. Saw them 3 times live and they were never anyway near ordinary. Thanks for posting.
Geeez these guys ARE good!!! Saw 'em 24 times, got the ticket stubs to prove it. Was 17 when this was aired still got it BETA!!! Haahaaa!! Yeah gettin on. The one gig l wish l had ov' been there along with "Last Stand". would then die a happy camper. Cheers!!
Cool tune to play at the Texas border, play it louder then hell so it causes some reverbation off that borderwall. It causes me thoughts of some big butt sized boat from panenanama sailing far away from home going to the other side of the ocean full of harm. I believe your video U.S. Forces shows such a ship. That ship probably was full of shit that people really do not want. A ship like that was seized the other day in Philadelphia. It had more than bananas and coffee on it. The largest confiscation of narcotics. A few moments later Philadelphia's largest oil refinery catches on fire. How in the Midnight Oil burnt. The bad deed doers of the un-united states of southern America... So Thanks for a great time with the music... It really is empowering.
@SumnerMurrayRedstone To say its 'redundant' is way too much. Its similar to DW but thats all. I've played Oils songs with bands and 'know exactly how genius they were - the guitar inter-play alone was magic, not to mention the drums, vocals etc etc thats why they were so great!
Back on the Boaderline is simply the greatest rock song ever played! It's a pity that The Oils let politics get the better of them after Head Injuries - and the less said about Peter Garrett's political career, the better.
More politics the better, this song is about returning from JOE BIJHOIKES (cant spell the bastards name) fascist qld of the seventies, imo the albums post injuries are much more political and higher quality, cheers mike
Yeah, the politics is what brought me onboard and kept me listening...10,9,8 played every night in my house for quite sometime. A band that actually mattered...they didn't just talk the talk, they walked the walk. This whole show is awesome.
Man they were tight on this one, a band at the height of their powers, three guitars, Hirst on drums, Garrett's voice, doesn't get any better than that...
You can say that again 😀
Guitar mix and especially the bass sound so 25 year old scotch sort of smooth, not doobe doo doo. Done on a island and patched into mixers to record such perfect tones? now i believe in a god finally!! haha
all aspiring bands out there listen, see and learn, this band is a real rock and roll band...greatest band on stage i have ever seen....
Rob Hirst is a bloody BEAST! To have much energy, be that fast and yet still so tight… one of the best drummers ever
100%
Although it may not sound like it, but Jim and Martin have so much interplay going on between them. It's technical guitar brilliance on so many levels.
oh yeah those two are so intertwind just perfect
The great musicians don't need to tell you, your ears tell you.

@@xx3868 Giffo was amazing..............even Bones admitted he couldn't emulate he's chord progressions

One of the all time great bands.

Live performance and rock power doesn’t get better than this.
"Rock power" recognized.
Great guitar parts with Martin playing a think fender constantly and Jim punching through loudly like little megaphone bursts and cliffords excellence touch on the Bass and you can hear his bass solo in Stand in Line near the end of the concert. Just got tickets to see them in LA. I'm so excited that they're back
Rob hurst...... Magician..

saw them at a pub here in new zealand in 1980, think it was. Just after their release of Head Injuries. Brilliant
Now this what I call ROCK!!!
One of my fav songs.

Saw them yesterday at my local bowlo. Well me and 399 of my best mates. They still got it!

As well as on video, i recorded this concert on audio which got played many times in the old Torana hatchback. Great song, great concert, great times.
Oils got big volume in my hatchback too. Those days will never come again - we had the best of it.
The best live band....ever!!
never 'just a job' for these guys....100%.....all the time...I miss you guys live
Sums up The Oils live.. brilliant
Now that's not mucking about , that's power.
Brilliant ! Love them !

awesome band!!!!!
Just brilliant.
So raw, so amazing.
Yeah ! Raw as Rock should be. And this bass/drums sound
This does not age, they were whole part of my music education when i was 15 im the mid eighties.
i love this song.....

So Thanks for a great time with the music... It really is empowering.
that bass rips it up
Probably the reason i played drums - Rob Hirst
One of several reasons for me. But I agree : one a the greatest rock drummers, without a doubt.
Same,
Him and Moon, masters of the live show.
He's right up there with Stewart Copeland for me. He plays music on the drums.
@@jokohomo9591 both Drummers i love
best rock band ever
@enlightenedDiamond no worries dude , i remeber a interview when the album was new and they where asked what it meant .it's a long time ago
Awesome!! Love it!!
love it
Amazing, remember Roskilde in the 90th´s
Fuck these guys could craft a song!
@SumnerMurrayRedstone
To say its 'redundant' is way too much. Its similar to DW but thats all. I've played Oils songs with bands and 'know exactly how genius they were - the guitar inter-play alone was magic, not to mention the drums, vocals etc etc thats why they were so great!
I agree. Also a lot of the Oils songs have chord patterns and structure that is all weird. I love it.
brilliant
Just let the music do the talkin’!!
enormissime
@christoraider Thanks Christo
What the fuck happened at 2.07. it was like a bomb went off. Amazing
@enlightenedDiamond i could be wrong but i think it represents nuclear explosions
FUCK YEAH!
2.07! Oh yeah....
Once a friend of mine complained about them having not enough punk. It was in the early 90s and maybe by then he was right. But this...
How much more Punk could you ever have?
F*%+$# this rocks memories of Wellington winter show buildings concert oils rock it was the 10 9 8 7 6 tour
The eighties.
Just quietly…. How good was Rob Hurst!!
Sounds like The Who meets the Sex Pistols
Vintage
red sails are the opera house...... TRUE
Who here knows what 'Red Sails' refer to?
How many times have I done that shitty trip? Always feels powerful and irrelevant.
Great band they were hot.
Just get rid of the fake power freak jumping around.

Peter Garrett was always political, and good for him
If you think this is not political, and that politics doesn't have a prime place in much of the best music, then you are, sorry to say, an ignoramus.
Don't listen to them you loser.
That crowd full of all the 10.9.8 band wagon wankers that never heard of the Head Injuries album.
🤣
It's a song from head injuries they would have heard it before you dick.
