OIls are fargon fantastic, whether in a pub, outdoors or masived concert hall, always top notch; and yes it has been a privilege to have witnessed them play in all these habitats.
I Saw them in Gothenburg Sweden 89, Will never forget, great memory. They came on stage in like 2 seconds, we were totally blown away. The drummer was amazing..😁
100% Mr Hines. He’s incredible. Mate of mine was a roadie back in the day for the Oils - use to tell me that he had to nail gun Robs drum set into the stage because he would hit that hard. Dude was a machine.
They would have had a multitrack unit there - a 16 or 24 machine. Whoever was the unit operator alongside Keith and whoever did the mixing afterwards, deserves a medal.
@@odaikorob Yes for the album release, but the this gig was also simulcast Live... ABC, and also for HQ Stereo on ABC's JJJ radio network... I tell ya, though my Kenwood Amp and EV Century studio monitors , its sounded this good!
I recorded this live on a beta hifi tape. ABC classical FM in Melbourne,we did not have JJJ yet or JJ as it was previously called. The mix is amazing and perfectly captures the soul of the band.
This is about the 100th time I've watched this and it only gets better, I am so glad to have been brought up with 80's pub rock, best band to ever come out of this country.
I can make it way Better, make it 101 times, ive cleaned up some of the concert video and converted it to HD 1080P HERE it is ua-cam.com/video/YthH7sZRvUU/v-deo.html
Without doubt the best concert ever shown on tv in any country by any artist. What a setting!. Lucky I put all the concert onto cd 15 years ago before only the strong vanished..why was that.
They definitely had the best of both worlds in this video.. playing on a beautiful afternoon on Sydney Harbour with some brilliant new songs.. a 3 piece brass complement and broadcasted around Australia... life doesn't get much better...
To me, this is easily the greatest, most energetic, best-sounding live music clip on the entire Internet!! Totally blew me away when I first watched this three years ago and it still does now! I want to be in a band like that!! :-))
Peter G one if not THE best bass players in Australia. Ive just learned the name of the " bass" he used in Sleep... a Chapman stick. Ive wondered that for like 40 years 😳 Plus, I have heard or read that the band couldn't play Stand in Line after Pete left because no-one could replicate his brilliant bass playing... a genius 👌👍
I'll never ever will feel so bad about being born 10 years too late and on the wrong continent than after watching these footage videos. Wow. Simply wow.
A thanks belated as it can be for this jewel I only first encountered a week ago. Been an Oils fanatic for decades yet never saw it till now. What everyone else said in praise I second, and add that among so much else to like MO did something unique and did it well: Punk-Prog fusion. And surf, and the rest of course. Along with certain albums, this video should be required viewing/listening of anyone still on the fence or outright hostile to Oil. I also wish a couple of my other fav. bands had a video document from their heydays this good.
My pop Arthur worked on that island as a painter and been there a few times but he passed the year before and I remember watching this live as a 15 year old.
JJ are fantastic, there is a JJ recording of the Oils on you tube of a 1980 gig at a fav hunting ground of theirs,The Antler Hotel Narrabean N.S.W. ,I’m from Melbourne but so jelly of all who attended those concerts but the sound on that is amazing. A truly magnificent band whose lyrics matched their passionate music.
I remember watching this in the mid 80's .It was JJJ 10th Birthday or JJ for those of us who remember am radio . thanks for the momories . P.S. where is the beginning bit of the video where Peter talks about Sydneys biggest barges and getting the equipment to Goat Island .
over thousands of years of man walking this earth its been a privilege to have existed at the same time as midnight oil
....nice one.
OIls are fargon fantastic, whether in a pub, outdoors or masived concert hall, always top notch; and yes it has been a privilege to have witnessed them play in all these habitats.
Likewise, and I couldn't have said it as well. Yes and Weather Report also 'qualify' here, and not so different from MO as many would assume.
I saw them tonight in adelaide, last time was '85
I Saw them in Gothenburg Sweden 89, Will never forget, great memory. They came on stage in like 2 seconds, we were totally blown away. The drummer was amazing..😁
Anybody who leaves Rob Hirst off a best drummers list is completely nuts.
kinda got a keith moon style with those flaying arms
100% Mr Hines. He’s incredible. Mate of mine was a roadie back in the day for the Oils - use to tell me that he had to nail gun Robs drum set into the stage because he would hit that hard. Dude was a machine.
Yes. He is The Best
Hirsty is a Drum God!
Yep👍🏼
One of the best live shows on youtube
I defy anyone to try to sit still and watch this! :-)
The legend Keith Walker was the mixer on this.. This is live, in 85.. Talk about a brilliant live mix. Respect
They would have had a multitrack unit there - a 16 or 24 machine. Whoever was the unit operator alongside Keith and whoever did the mixing afterwards, deserves a medal.
It's unbelievably good. Perfect.
The sound is so great!

Man wears a pink jump suit - You gotta be tuff to do that!
All cred to one of the greatest drummers
it was a very 80's colour, you know. Today men are so fragile that they blame a colour
im from Argentina and i saw midnight in 1993, they are one of the best bands on the world playing alive. Aguante Midnight!!!
snm1973 A great band. Epic performances.
Inolvidable presentación en Buenos Aires, estadio Obras, ante unas 1500 afortunadas personas que estábamos allí.
It's easy to forget just how good these guys were at their jobs.
One of the best band Ever! Lyrics- chord changes- drumming- guitars!

Same thing
Me too

Only the strong is on here now, such a fantastic performance.
What a time to be alive , best cars , best music best times AUSTRALIA
They definitely had the best of both worlds in this video.. playing on a beautiful afternoon on Sydney Harbour with some brilliant new songs.. a 3 piece brass complement and broadcasted around Australia... life doesn't get much better...
August 4, 1985, I saw them here in Santa Fe NM at the now defunct for concerts , Paolo Soleri Amphitheater . One of the GREATEST shows of my life.
The Goat Island quartet, blasting the brass sounds up the back. Peak Oils. Lucky to have seen them live a number of times.
There will never be a sound system loud enough to do this justice. Brilliant.
I love how at 1:50, Giffo continues to shred the bass as he sways out of the way of Peter.
He's think i wonder if he's gonna climb that thing 🤔
Australia's greatest bass player....and bikini designer
These guys are freaky crazy and the drummer is a god 👍🏼👍🏼
Garrett is 6'3" of pure energy!!!!
It’s not at all important but he’s definitely taller than 6’3”!
It was no fluke this band went on to be an international success. 10 to 1 and Red Sails were just superb albums from the start to finish.
this concert as a teenager in a small town still resonates _ FK it was so good _ thanks for posting
To me, this is easily the greatest, most energetic, best-sounding live music clip on the entire Internet!! Totally blew me away when I first watched this three years ago and it still does now! I want to be in a band like that!! :-))
The oils were perfect
I was at this concert. It wasnt advertised so i was lucky to hear about while i was at kings cross.
I envy you.

He's all over the stage... AND IT'S GLORIOUS...
@Austin Lucas - Hello! What a very pleasant surprise to find you here!! :-))
High energy. This is an intense performance. Go! Go! Go! Oz people!
I'll never ever will feel so bad about being born 10 years too late and on the wrong continent than after watching these footage videos. Wow. Simply wow.
A real injustice:)
Probably one of the best live bands that were out there. Always tight.
I remember seeing this concert live on ABC television in 1985 when i was 16 .Oils at there best .
Me too. It was a Saturday Arvo.
Me too, and and it was the moment I fell in love with this band.
