I live alone so I have single serve meals in the freezer and a paper inventory. I write the name of the food and the amount in pencil, such as “Chili 1 2 3 4”. Then each time I use one, I erase the largest number.
In my deep freezer, I have everything in grocery bags by category: breads, frozen veggies, convenience meals like homemade hot pockets or chicken nuggets.

I date EVERYTHING in the pantry. I also transfer all pasta , sugar , rice , beans, etc . to Mason jars ( oven dry canning) Takes up less space. I call it the VAULT . Because my pantry is just as an important investment like a savings account. The meatballs looked fabulous !

I use a black Sharpie to write the expiration date on everything in my pantry & fridge. So much easier to see at a quick glance to make sure things are used up timely. I appreciate the “behind the scenes” honest peek into your pantry! Thanks for keeping it real, instead of staged.

I was married in 1983 and that Betty Crocker Sweet and Sour Meatballs recipe was one of my go-to newlywed meals! I need to make it again for old time’s sake.
Meatballs are one of the staples I keep in my freezer. I make them in large batches and they are always available for quick lunches or dinners. I have several kinds - Italian, Swedish, Enchilada-flavored and Turkey Ginger Garlic which go in an Asian-inspired vegetable soup. That soup is a favorite here, even with the grandkids!
I have a small pantry in my kitchen which was built with very deep shelves. One might think that’s a good thing - more room for food- but it was awful. I always said my pantry was clearly not designed by someone who cooks. A couple of years ago I asked my husband to re-make it for my birthday gift. I wanted more shallow shelves which he thought was counterintuitive but eventually saw the wisdom of. I treated myself to modular containers and now we have a very usable pantry. I don’t need to keep an inventory because the containers are labeled and I can see what is getting low. There’s a shelf for snacks, one for breakfast items, one for grains and pasta, one for baking and a couple for miscellaneous. I love it and still get a feeling of deep satisfaction when I open the door!

Hi Emmy and Paul. We don't have a walk-in pantry so I just use the kitchen cabinets. Our freezer is organized the way you demonstrated on a video, probably at least a couple of years ago now. We use the food saver for freezer items to extend their life. I know there are two schools of thought on this issue (and it's an individual decision), but we eat things past the date depending on what it is and if it passes inspection by us. We have found if you go to certain websites (sometimes even the manufacturer) it tells how long food is good past by best buy date. We are ok with that as long as the food passes our inspection. That way if something gets stuck in the cabinet and not seen for a while, we don't necessarily have to discard it. If the food looks iffy, it gets discarded because it's not worth getting sick over. Have a great week.

Thanks for the great video again! You inspired me last Friday to do the inventory of the pantry and the freezer. I spent half of Sunday organizing everything. The result is a two weeks meal plan that came together in no time. Solely on what we already have at home!
I googled ingredients I wanted to use, and found some 5 stars rated recipes that I will try out.
I have a pretty stocked up pantry, could go on for longer than two weeks if I wanted to.

I have a canning room full of meat, veggies and jams. I also buy things on sale. I am on the process of reorganizing my pantry and canning room to eliminate any need to eat out. I would like to eat at home as much as possible. I even make our puppy his food as it is much healthier than what they sell in the stores. He won’t even touch can puppy food now. I bought 20 lbs. of chicken leg quarters, roasted them, deboned them, froze the meat in portions and canned chicken stock for our canning room-all for .59/lb. I am stocked on stock for the remainder of the year and beyond.

For my canned foods, I get those cardboard case boxes from the store so that they stack well and if I want something that is underneath the top row, I can move the entire box without things falling over. I am in the process of turning a small bedroom into my food pantry so that I can see everything that I have without it all being in the deep dark cabinets that I seen to never find what I need. I also have a very small kitchen so some of the pantry space will be used for storing kitchen gadgets that I can then clear from the counters. This will make everything neater and more inviting.

Thanks for the inspiration. I decided this week to get organised. I am getting rid of at least 10 items a day either to charity or throwing out and tomorows agenda starts with the panntry. I have added to it and the freezer since Christmas and lost track of what I have but know that by next week I will have my menu plans for the next month and an organised house. Sometimes we all need a little nudge and that's just what you gave me. I know it's common sense but sometimes the weeks go by and it can seem overwhelming . I find by just giving myself a little to do each day I am getting there and don't feel exhausted just satisfied that I've acheived the days goals.

It's "watchyoursister" sauce in my house. My youngest daughter came up with some cute mispronunciations of words when small to the amusement of the family. I cook for only myself now and usually make a recipe for something and portion it into individual portions, freeze some in microwavable containers and have easy meals for several weeks. I also freeze a couple of slices of bread in ziploc bags because there's no way I can use a whole loaf before it spoils. Thanks for these messages.

I date all pantry foods and freezer foods; easy to rotate that way. I decided at 1 pm to fix tacos with refried beans for dinner. I went to my freezer and pulled out taco meat (12 oz cooked feeds the three of us) and a bag of homemade refried beans. I’ve got all the toppings in the frig along with corn and flour tortillas. All my meals for the week will be pulled out of the frig, freezer and pantry. Such a stress-free feeling knowing I can feed us for 6 months with food on hand should something go terribly wrong. I have a roomy pantry not far from my kitchen but also keep one of all my canned goods, peanut butter, syrup, snacks, coffee and tea, cold cereal in cabinets in my kitchen. When I use anything up I replace it from the pantry. It is organized with a couple of shelves for baking items, one for canned goods, one for cereal and oatmeal etc but I don’t date the items in bold black market. Probably should. That being said I don’t keep half as much on hand as Emmy does partly because we do little entertaining and are in our ‘70’s and din’t need as much food. I have never had an extra freezer. Mostly my comfort level is having less to keep up with and organize. We waste nothing! Carole

We did tacos last night with left over must go items too
We had some shells that were already opened to use, shredded a bunch of random cheese pieces and made some pico with some aging green onions, tomatoes and lime. Only fresh item from the store was the lettuce that I'd bought on my biweekly trip earlier in the day.
Had a few soft shells open too so we had "meximelts" and nachos as well
We said it was as tasty as the restaurant
We saved at least $60 by not going out, so it was a big WIN...
As far as your pantry I didn't think it wasn't terrible. But, you did a great job.
Ive got to get after mine a bit. (Again) i did it in January but it can easily get to be a jumble

  • @nevermind7253
    @nevermind7253 Рік тому +2

    Little tip
The potatoes and onions are great in those bags, but if you wrap them in paper... Like news paper or even cut up paper grocery bags they will last even longer as the lite is kept out AND they are not touching each other!
Cut up egg container box's also would work to separate them.... And if they are cut up you can still use those hanging bags!
    Good job....
Congrats on your hard work and honesty with us! 😁

I rarely find anything expired, but I will use expired foods too if they aren’t waaay past the date. I just went through it a few days ago and found some raisins I got in a pickup order that I didn’t order. I pulled them out yesterday and made cinnamon raisin bread.

Hi Emmy and Paul! My pantry looks the same. It’s so easy to let it get out of hand, just shoving things in when I come home from the store. When it is organized, I organize like with like and it’s always in the same place. Canned tomatoes always on the left, followed by tomato sauce, the, canned beans, then vegetables, etc,. I try to reorganize and inventory once a month. I’m slowly getting better at it. I’m a work in progress! I’ve got the exact Betty Crocker cookbook but mine is hard bound. Dated 1983. I happen to have some leftover pineapple I need to use up so I’m going to make that sweet and sour recipe.

One of the biggest ways we waste money is to toss non perishables because of the expiration dates. These types of foods are still good way past the exp. dates. I understand this does not apply to perishables like milk, cheese, yogurt etc, but even those do not magically go bad at the exp. date. Thank you for your videos!

We date everything and rotate continuously. In our kitchen pantry all dry and baking goods are stored in 3 gallon buckets, backup pantry all items are in 5 gallon buckets and long term is in Mylarbags with 02 absorbers and they are in barrels. We have been stocking and storing food for the last 40 years. We raise 11/2 acre garden and corn fields that are planted in 3 sisters of our dry beans, pumpkin, winter squash, popcorn, sweet corn, dent corn for grinding. These not only supply us with generous amounts of food but cash for extras. We also raise and breed chickens, ducks, turkeys. I also have canned goods etc in my kitchen cabinets. Not much room in a senior apt. And I only have in pantry what I use. I get all kinds of dried beans from the free table in my building and transfer them to coffee cans or jars. I usually only make bar b q beans we with them and use each different bean to make a crock pot full of bar b q beans. Northern beans, pinto beans, Lima beans all taste good bar b qued. I have a big tub full of pasta. And try and use different pastas all the time. It is only me now so cooking has gotten easier. I started up cycling square plastic clamshell box's in the refrigerator and freezer helps me so much using every inch!!
I have a very small old refrigerator where we rent so it needs all the help I can give it!
The box's allows me to store way more item's in the space.
I have to be honest, I did not believe it would make a difference, I honestly thought it would work the opposite....
    Boy was I wrong!!
    Same stuffed freezer
ALL compartmentalized.... Like beef, breakfast, pork etc.
    OMG
I actually now have a blank Free space so if I see something on sale I can fit it in!!

We are retired farm people and put food by differently than most folks. We buy canned food like vegetables, fruit, etc, by the case. Cases are marked by date and one is replaced as it is opened. Product is kept in a store room on steel racks; plus free standing freezers. Our frozen food is organized by type, i.e., whole meats, fish, butter, and cheese together; then fruits and vegetables; and lastly foodstuffs that aren't in the other categories. For instance we make bone broth, stock, and soups ahead and freeze, also we keep some hot dogs, fish sticks and bread. The refrigerator freezer is for open packages we are using up. We have a special area in the store room to keep dry goods (flour, oats, dried potatoes, rice, beans). We buy fresh items as needed. We're extremely careful with these resources. We inventory every three months. Of course, when you've done something like this for as long as we have, you almost know what's what, but of course, it needs to be checked. We all need to be reminded to take stock and prepare for the future. We must be good stewards of that which the Lord has blessed us. Thank you for your videos, I like listening to your calming voice. 🙏👑✝

Something that helps me not to waste food is prepping some of our produce right away and repackaging meats into smaller sizes for our 2-person meals before freezing, such as 1/2 lb portions of ground meat. When lettuce is already washed & dried, and I have carrots, onions, celery, peppers, etc. cut up and ready to go, making dinner is easier and keeps us on track eating more veggies, too.

The two bottom racks on the door hold garbage and trash bags.

I try to buy only products I like and eat. I use a ton of black beans, chickpeas, and canned tomatoes. I note their expiration dates in Sharpie on the top of the can and stack those together. For items like oats, raisins, mustard, pasta sauce, or pasta, I put the newest box in the back of the cabinet and pull the older ones to the front. I will follow your lead and write an actual list of what I have, because out of sight is out of mind. I inventory my freezer periodically and that helps me use items efficiently. Still not a master of the freezer, but I'm gaining on it. Thanks for reminding us to make great food from the items we have gathered.

Right now I am using a deep and tall cabinet as our pantry. It has 3 pull out shelves on the bottom, which helps you see food in the back. The other shelves do not move. Because the shelves are so deep, I write the expiration date and item name on the top of the can. Then I can look down and see what I have without pulling it out. I have baking supplies and grains together, and most are decanted in plastic or glass jars. It is not perfect though... My pantry has gotten pretty full and I need to rotate through our supply. It is a work in progress...

    Real life practical frugal tips-
Since we retired and move from Concord, North Carolina to North Myrtle Beach every few weeks, it’s easy to lose track…
Here’s what we’ve had to do:
    1. Clean/Organise/list inventory in the pantry at our main home every three weeks. ( We put it on our Happy Calendar every third Monday).
    2. Pantry is organised by food groups… with no more than 4 of one item ( there are only two of us).
    3. Same goes for Freezor- although we only clean it out / inventory etc every 90 days ( The freezer is in the garage).
    4. We have been cleaning our refrigerator out once a month, but since Emmy’s video on cleaning it out before the Sabbath- we are trying that schedule and seeing if this works better. ( Thank you for that wonderful suggestion on keeping the sabbath in preparing the day before!)
    5. At Ocean Drive beach in North Myrtle we only Stock one or two items of each thing in the pantry.
We are only two minutes away from Aldis, Walmart, food Lion and Publix ( as opposed to in Concord where it’s a 20 minute drive to grocery stores! Plus there are no taxes on food in South Carolina!!!)
We take advantage of the happy hour cheap meals and never go out in Concord where it’s much more expensive!
Thanks again for another wonderful video💙💙💙✝️💕😇

We converted the coat closet to a pantry as it’s steps away from our kitchen and I organize it by category. I organize our chest freezer by category as well using large cloth grocery bags to hold each category and when I restock both I put the older items in the front/top so I use them first. The category bags help my husband find what he needs avoiding the inevitable where is such and such question shouted from the basement. It also helps me know when a particular category needs stocking up because the bag is getting lighter when I pull it up out of the freezer.
