Cooking from scratch is why I created my own channel for family and friends. Homemade always tastes better than store bought and is easier than most people think. The recipes look great, we love hummus in this house. 🙂

Frozen blackeyed peas, a little salt, a lot of water. Cook in the crockpot until they are mushy and the water has thickened. Can be a veg but I eat it as soup. Warm, cheap, filling. Ultimate comfort food. I have that yellow bowl, it is part of a set of four, red, blue, green and yellow. My grandfather brought them to my mama when I was very small.

My husband takes a turkey sandwich for lunch everyday. Instead of buying high priced, processed high sodium deli turkey I buy a frozen turkey breast. After roasting it, the actual breast meat (minus the skin and bones) costs about $3.50/lb! He loves it!

I don't keep tahini in my house because of the cost, but I do keep sesame oil for Asian cooking. I substitute it for some of the olive oil in my hummus recipe and still get that nice roasted seed taste but at a much lower cost. Thanks for the inspiration to make my own pita bread....haven't tried it yet, but I will!

I make almost everything from scratch. We eat a lot of popcorn and always pop it ourselves. Never use the microwave kind. I do use a cake mix occasionally. I have also started making on a regular basis, salad dressings. So much better and way less expensive!

I recently bought a silicone popcorn popper for the microwave. I have been popping my own kernels - no added oil - in the microwave. So quick and easy. I add a light spritz of spray-type oil while it is hot and shake on a bit of popcorn salt. Tastes just like movie popcorn. I'll never buy bagged microwave popcorn again!

This video is saved for future reference! I'm definitely trying these two recipes; they look delicious. Due to food allergies, I've gone to what I call a cheater-vegan diet (I eat fish). Recently, I began making my own lentil/sweet potato veggie burgers, lentil breakfast sausages or "meatballs", and dairy-free butter, to name a few things. Not only does it save us money, but everything tastes much cleaner than the store-bought versions.

I'm a little unusual in that I prefer beef in the morning for breakfast, often with eggs - thanks to your video a few months ago saying that buying deli sliced is extremely expensive in comparison, I started buying a brisket of a couple lbs and making a pot of beef like in Marcella Hazan's Italian cookbook, slice it up whilst it's warm, reconstruct the brisket and keeping it in its broth for the week. I then use the broth and vegetables in other dishes I cook throughout the week with it so nothing is wasted. Saves me a pretty penny and is much more satisfying than store bought, so thank you for that encouragement! ❤️🙏

Chicken soup with Matzo balls. You can add in all the leftover veggies in your produce drawer and put in as much chicken as you want from a clear broth to a chicken stew. It warms you from the inside out. Throw some leftovers in the freezer and defrost them when you don’t feel well. I’m making your Sunday sauce right now. It’s become one of our favorites. I make a big batch and we eat it for a few meals ( it’s fabulous the next day!) then throw servings for 2 in the freezer and when I don’t feel like cooking I defrost them and change up the pasta throw some Mozzarella on top and stick it under the broiler and yum yum yum!

I was taking home ec class in highschool in my rural hometown and my aunt's family from an urban area came to visit. I remembered them marveling at the homemade cake I'd made. They said it tasted better than "one from out of the box" and I didn't even know what they meant! This would have been in the 1960s and every food item we prepared was "from scratch" .

Love the Bread recipe and can’t wait to try it! This may be redundant but I notice in the grocery store that people pile up deli meats, Pimento cheese, chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad.
We make our own on a rotating basis so we don’t get bored.
The huge sales on whole turkeys in January were purchased to cook for a lot of sandwiches in early March and early April. In January and February we had ham from the spiral honeybaked ham that we had at Christmas. It froze well and became handy for sandwiches and quiche.
Thank you Emmy and Paul for another great video.

Hi Paul and Emmy, I make my own bread, pizza dough and just recently tried for the first time making my own crescent rolls. This weekend I’m attempting the Danish pastries that have jam or cream cheese in the small depression in the middle. I also make my own taco seasoning so I can control the sodium, and am looking into creating my own version of other seasoning blends. Here's one thing I always make from scratch -- cocktail sauce. I like to dip my shrimp into a sauce with lots of horseradish, so I make my own. Simple. Just combine ketchup, horseradish and a few drops of Worcestershire sauce. I keep a jar of Inglehoffer brand creamy horseradish in my fridge at all times and use that. I often make my own tarter sauce too.

Hi Emmy and Paul. I make my own vegetable stock. I keep a gallon zip top bag in the freezer with the cut ends from onion, carrots, celery, bell peppers and sometimes the stems from fresh herbs from my garden. When the bag is full, I place it in my instant pot, cover with water and cook for about an hour. I then keep the broth in reusable deli cups in the freezer. I usually make about 15 cups of broth each time. I use the broth to season my rice or pasta when I make them, or as a base for soup. I can also make this in my crock pot and cook it overnight. Thanks for all you do.

Good job on the hummus. We have been making it for the past six months since we got a Vitamix. We do more things with it than smoothies. The one thing that we make at home is a Broccoli and Cheese Soup. So many people plunk down a lot of money for those tiny little tubs that bear the name of a bread place on them. We wait until broccoli crowns are in sale and then we whip up the soup. Another favorite is cauliflower soup either with or without curry. You control the amount of sodium and there are never any artificial flavor or colors when you make it yourself.

The pan bread and the hummus looked delicious. I could eat that every day. The bread seemed very versatile as well by using different spices to make it sweet (cinnamon/sugar) or more savory once it was cooked. For me, there are more and more things I make from scratch - all of our breads and muffins, waffles, crepes and pancakes, seasoning mixes like taco or sloppy joe type seasonings, salad dressings, tartar sauce, shrimp sauce, pesto sauce, pasta/pizza sauce, broths, butter, and hummus. Thanks to you I started making refrigerator jams as well! I was making homemade mayo until the price of eggs went through the roof.

Thanks for the tip about blending the hummus ingredients in steps Emmy, I always put everything in together and the hummus seems too clumpy. I always make pesto. I just add lemon juice, garlic and olive oil (no nuts) and blend what I have that needs to be used up. One of my favourites is watercress, which is grown here in UK or Rocket. If they need to be used up just make them into pesto. So nice and money saving. Jars of pesto are expensive in the UK. Thanks for being you Emmy and Paul ❤️❤️

I have a stockpile of bought pasta sauces, but I have started to make my own, more frequently.
Made a batch of homemade earlier, to go in the freezer. Added lot's of vegetables (onions, courgettes, peppers and mushrooms) and blended until smooth.
    Tastes delicious.
Not buying any more in the jar.
Will definately try the bread recipe.

I also cook all of our meals from scratch. Some items I refuse to buy in the store is soup, chili or broth. I prefer to make my own from scratch. I also don’t buy premade rice (yes it’s actually sold in the freezer section). When I cook rice I double or triple the batch and then portion the leftovers into freezer bags. Great for when you need to make a fast meal that calls for rice. Especially if it’s brown rice which takes longer to cook.

Am definitely going to try the bread recipe! I make a lot of cream soups from scratch. Potato, celery, and mushroom are the ones I make the most. By making them from scratch, I can control the salt content. And if I have to say so myself, they are really good!!

Hi EMMY! Could not wait to tell u about this, I buy a bag of lemons for about $3-$4 then I leave them on the counter for at least 24 hrs. Easier to juice that way. I have a very small ice cube tray that I use to freeze the juice then place in freezer bags or food saver bags!
This way I always have fresh juice for recipes or tea! I use the lemon halves afterwards to clean my copper pots with a little salt if needed. Shines them right up!

I make all my own broth. I put chicken, turkey, or beef bones in my pressure cooker with various seasonings. I also make veggie broth as I save my peelings from onions, celery, potatoes, carrots, and pressure cook them, then strain the broth. I then label and date the containers and freeze them.
I buy frozen fruits from Dollar Tree, then mix several together in a pot and bring to a boil, adding a small amount of OJ for moisture and sweetness. I cook on low until it becomes a lumpy mass of fruit and juice. I put in small containers and freeze. I use this "sauce" on pancakes, French toast, ice cream, or just plain as a side like applesauce.
I also save my chicken fat and skin. Once I have at least 2 cups, I boil it until the fat is golden and clear and the "cracklins" rise to the top. I skim off the cracklins, cool and refrigerate the fat. Once cold, it turns white. When I oven roast potatoes and root vegetables, I heat up a couple of tablespoons, drizzle it over the veggies, add herbs/spices, and bake. I also use the fat instead of butter when cooking rice. I use a lot less olive oil and butter now.

I just recently made my first batch of home-made mayo, using a method shown by Nyssa at “Our Small Footprint.” She lives off grid in an Australian homestead with her family, cooking virtually every morsel they eat from scratch. Her food is amazing - and that mayo cannot even be compared to anything you could buy commercially. So simple, so cheap, but sooo good!
