    Sorry to hear about all of the losses. I specialize mainly in succulents and while away on a trip to a funeral I came home to a pest infestation. I've lost about two so far that made a pretty good dent. Being broke does not help either. Best of luck!

    Now I understand how these plants attract insects. The smell. Didn't know they did that. Just got one of these for my husband. So im learning about them to inform him so he knows what to do when hes not working. He likes plants. Sorry to hear about all of the crazy weather over there. Prayers will go out for all of you.
    Now one particular carnivorous plant I really want is one of those lantern plants. Very intriguing they are!

    To help protect against the rain, use window screen. Make a big table with the top made out of window screen. You can even make a big window screen BOX to put them all in. The small holes on the screen will allow the water to come thru, yet it will help protect them also from the big drops.
    Will also keep the birds out.

    You say a water tray, I first bought these plants in my early teens some 50 years ago, one a year for three years as they died. The last one I dug up to find the bulb had rotted, far too wet.
    The following year and another plant I kept the water down and had it four years.
    I got another this year after a failure last year, it did well then I found two maggots had eaten the bulb.
    I've got a root showing at the base of the pot where it's quite moist and fairly dry on top of the peat.
    It is flowering so I think I'll try propagating it the way you show, I had previously cut the flowers off that one I had for four years.

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  4 роки тому +5

      Probably laying on the sides as you did. This will ensure that both cut ends are covered in soil and there’s a greater surface area of the flower on the soil. I actually should’ve done it this way! What I’ll do when I get home (if I remember) is to turn one pot sideways and experiment

    Thank you very much the video was very informative and the way you explained the whole biology stuff was really fun. I recently bought my dionea (or flytrap)and I had to question does the ph on the soil effects the growth of the plant or it's not a big issue?

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  2 роки тому +1

      I’m glad you enjoyed it! The soil the plant grow in is slightly acidic. This is achieved by the peat they grow in, as long as your water is neutral you have nothing to worry about.

      Maxsea fertilizer can be used to boost growth. It's natural nitrogen and phosphorus from algae and the like, but is still VERY potent and can be misted over propogation or plants monthly. I'd suggest looking up videos beforehand, but you can get a small amount (which will make GALLONS of fertilizer) for a few dollars.

      Seeing as I only know that Home Depot is an American company (and I assume you are there then), and it’s winter there, then yes. This is the best time to re pot them. I will be doing a re potting video this week too. Use peat and perlite in a ratio of 1:1 (peat and perlite must have NO additives, do not use miracle gro). You can repot at your own convenience :) yes place it directly outside. Depending on your state. If it gets below 0 Celsius then a cold garage/room that stays unheated will work. As long as said room has a south facing windowsill the plant may sit on until the temperatures stay above 0 Celsius. Otherwise the plant will be happy outside. The plant must stay outdoors in the sun 24/7. I’m happy to help if you have more questions and I do have a few videos on their care too

    Can I use filtered water from my vinus fly trap? I made a mistake of transferring it into a pot that had different suculants and ordernary cheap potting mix. Will my Vinus fly trap still live? I'm from Australia NSW.. 🇦🇺 ☺

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  3 роки тому

      No definitely not. Look at pool filter sand, it needs to be silica (inert sand)

    When cutting the stocks for propagation, do you not need to worry about root rot? Do the ends not need to callous over? or would it be okay to dab the ends in a root hormone?

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  4 роки тому +1

      Nope, there’s no roots, so nothing to worry about. Secondly, VFT need to be kept 24/7 like most carnivorous plants :) nope, as I did it is how you need to do it, so don’t worry about it callousing. You can dab the ends in rooting hormone if you wish. Make sure the hormone is safe for herbs

    When would be the best time to cut the flowers? Mine only started producing a stalk a few days ago so its still very very small still, should I just cut it off now or should I wait until it hits a certain hight? I'm worried about how much energy its going to use as my plant is still rather small even if it is growing healthily

    • @TheFlytrapGarden
      @TheFlytrapGarden  3 роки тому

      As soon as you see it

    • @pershop4950

      Cutting it as soon as you see it is fine, but if you want to propagate it, then I think waiting until it gets to about the size where you can get 2-4 cuttings (like in this video) is also good, so you have more segments to try to grow. Since some VFTs only produce that one stalk each year, so you have that one chance that year to try it. Might as well get a few segments from it to give it more chances to strike and make new VFTs.
