The way you broke this down was ridiculous. even though this was a template based video, you perfectly walk us towards a better understanding of what each plugin means in the vocal chain. forever grateful.
Na so I had a session yesterday morning, and I seen this video the night before. Ended up recreating this template with Slate VMR on the spot which saved my session cus the artist was able to perform much better and more free once the processing was on. Ya saved my session!
Look man, I went to full sail and have been engineering for years. This template is FIRE. This is the first template i’ve ever even allowed into my workflow. My cheap ass just recreated it, and thank you for showing this & the settings so that could be an option! You a real one man, thanks for putting on for the engineers. 🎉
Dope template , I just use a compressor for tracking just for more control I think doing this sometimes it tricks the artist in believing this will be the final sound and when you send them the mix this will be what they look for . I like to mix and explain to Artist what I did so just in case they don’t like the move I change it right then . We as engineers should do more explaining . I definitely understand you guys POV tho but I’m just still in love with Artist hearing their raw vocals transform unless I’m already tracking threw analog gear
True. But as an artist you deliver a better performance when your vocals sound close to final version thus making the mixing process easier for the engineer
Oh man! This is SOOOO helpful! You guys are awesome! I would like to see a video regarding setting up the vocal input(s) to accommodate for the -10dB spec that you mentioned, as this I know is quite critical to get a vocal track as "hot" as possible without damaging the quality of sound. That would be quite empowering as is this video. Thanks so much!!!
i think it depends sometimes im pretty happy with my personal template and just add the finishing touches sometimes its not working for the song and start over
I’m interested in purchasing, quick question let’s say I want to add more tracks do I have add all the plugins on each track to make it sound like the recording track? - Help me Devvon
it could help out but it’s for sure not gonna fix the problem in the same way. i think a pop filter is an irreplaceable microphone dressing if u can’t get your hands on one wrap a pair of socks around ur mic & you’ll be good to go 🤣🤣 gotta do what u gotta do
why req over f6 rta? was it an in the moment choice when u were making the template way back when? Or a creative choice? I remember u being really supportive of the f6 in a podcast so I was just wondering

Quick and potentially silly question. If you're recording with a recording template, don't that result in a double mix? If you have already applied effects then what is the actual mixing sesh gonna look like?
Yoooo just got the template and you need to do a tutorial because its only 2 tracks for the beat and to record THAT'S IT! There are no lead tracks, no adlibs track, no dubs track NOTHING! Just literally the 2 tracks you see is what it will be! So we need a video or something explaining how this is even a template frfr!
Bought this template yesterday. the waves template on my mac in studio one 6 work but not on my windows pc in studio one 6. it says missing waves plugins. Maybe the template was created on a mac formatted only hd. please send me another download that works on the windows side. Ps. the stock version of the template loads fine on both mac and pc. It's just the template including waves doesn't work in windows studio one 6. i have the same exact studio one 6 version on both systems.Thanks.
I think what he’s saying is when you are recording, make sure your recording levels are hitting at an average of -10db. Some people like -12 or even -18, but I think they crafted the mix based on -10. So if you’re recording around -10db coming in, the plugins will work automatically with a few tweaks based on the artist of course.
When you record in low latency mode all the plugins turn off... with that off there is huge latency. What settings are you using to record in real time with plugins? Do you have a video for that?
No. Devvon explains that this template is just to make the artist feel more comfortable in their performance during recording and that you can tweak the settings after.
You need an advanced series where you don't have to explain what an EQ is every time you pull one out lol. This channel is super nice, but thats my only pet peeve. Make advanced mixing videos. I already know why we EQ a vocal.
That is a lot of plug ins, it changes the over all sound of your wave and displaces your frequencies, best thing to do is try to get a good vocal head phone mix, and you can use reverb to get the vocalist involved... That is a lot of processing. Once you bounce that it is going to sound pretty bad
As a beginner you copy as a seasoned engineer you’ll see the chain and use it in a way to where you know it’s right for your vocals or change certain aspects to fit others vocals
On a artist to artist basis I could see this recording template being a problem. I understand you're trying to create a vibe for said client but it also puts the client in a box with your template meaning that they're not hearing the bigger picture, instead, they are hearing a controlled version on their vocal over a two track or stems. I think the vibe starts with your source (recording environment, mic and placement, analog tracking (if any) and preamp. I know you're not recording with plugins but in my opinion there is way to much processing on the recording end to evidently "take it home" to mix. If you're not getting close to your end mixing result with the current recording template then why commit to such a recording style? Could save CPU and use a JJP or a CLA vocal rack if you really want to dictate a vibe. End result to me sounded lifeless and lost a lot of dynamics to the vocal.
@@Wurldz @Wurldz As a professional who humbly learns and research's tricks to the trade everyday this is more of a blueprint to how they track and record within their recording environment. Showing his gain staging and recording levels before going into his recording chain would help less experience engineers more IMO. I also do understand he has a bunch of educational videos on that and other areas. This is not a knock towards Devvon, I genuinely love his work and talent, this is just me adding my two cents. Using speicific plugns like the god particle as you mentioned is not boxing yourself in. PLugins are all tools to use. But using the same vocal chain no matter the artist, song, vibe, genre is asinine since not all recording chains work for all. All that to dial in a decent vocal over a two track to not even get close to end product to evidently "take it home to mix". I could almost promise that the "mixing set" of plugins is completely different from the "recording set"
