  • In this video I finish up most of the bodywork on the Silver 1984 Porsche 944 and send it off to the paint shop. This car is being sprayed the original Zermatt silver so they started off spraying a 2k primer then a clear over the top for shine. The car turned out great but I still had to install the bumpers, door handles, mirrors, and all the trim. Finally I finished up by repainting the wheels. The car turned out great and I think the owner will be very happy with it!

    Your videos are the best! Very informative and as a man let me just say you have a great voice, very soothing. You sound like a nice guy. My first one was an 85 bought new and kept for 11 years. I'm on my 5th car and own an 89 & 91 944S2's which I love. I've had the 89 for four years and bought it not knowing that I had owned it in 96-97. Guy I sold it to kept it all those years then sold it to his dry cleaner who had it for 6 months before selling it to me. These are fantastic cars that let me forget I have grey hair for awhile.

    Great Vid. I’m taking apart my 88’ Celebration now and your videos are a tremendous help! It would be awesome to see you do some vids on disassembly and reassembly of the various parts like doors, hood, windows, etc. really appreciate all! I’m trying to get the right pin pusher to pull the mirrors....Any suggestions/sources?

      I'll see what I can do! I have my turbo torn apart at the moment doing all those things. I plan to eventually make a video on all that, but don't know when I'll get around to it.I just got two 951's in so those are the next set of videos and I'm not sure what all I'll be doing to those yet, but I'll keep this in mind. As for the pin remover, I found mine at radio shack years ago, but it has since closed. Good luck finding one! Thanks!

    My car has one of each handle and it is 85.5. I dont think they make the script ones anymore. I ordered a OE handle for my sons car and it had no script. $218 for driver handle. Ouch!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      Ouch, indeed! I have heard that a lot of VW guys like to buy up the script handles which makes them rather difficult and expensive to find. I have an 85.5 here at the shop with script handles. I think they look nice but I don't really see what all the fuss is about. I have stock pile of the cheap early handles in case I need them.

  • @saraflores9601
    @saraflores9601 6 років тому

    Fantastic work! Why do some 944 door handles have the Porsche script and others have that textured insert?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      Thanks! Since this is an early 944 it still uses the 924 door handles which were mostly VW parts bin assemblies. In 1985.5 they started using the script handles, I guess to not only improve the appearance of the car but to keep Golf owners from pointing out that their Porsche had VW handles. :D

    My door handles are loose on my 951, it is a pain to lock and unlock the doors. Do you have to align the door handles to alleviate this problem or do I just pull the door apart and tighten the handles/ Any help would be great! Also my seal on the hatch back keeps coming loose, should I use an adhesive on it? I can put it back in place and a week later it's loose. Great video! THanks for all your help!

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! If the screw on the side of the door is loose then the handles will move around. That said, if the rubber gaskets on the handles are worn they will be loose even with the screw tight. Hard to say what is making them hard to lock, could be that the lock cylinders need to be greased. You could try shooting some WD-40 down in there for now just to check. The hatch seal shouldn't need any adhesive. There is a metal piece inside that should keep it snug and it could be bent. You could try bending it back into shape with some pliers and see if that helps any. If not, a new seal will do the trick. I got this on from only944 for $74 to my door and I think it looks nicer than the stock seal. I hope that helps!

    love your videos you do good work, i noticed you do alot to the 2.5 do you ever work on the early 2.0? i have owned 5 of the early 924's there fairly easy to work on and you can find them running for very cheap, found a 82 924 where i live but the body is pretty rough and they want 2500 for it, also found another 924 not running they want 400 for it.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      Occasionally I do... I don't come across too many these days. I had a 2.0L 924 nearly 20 years ago now but since then I've been daily driving a 2.5 liter 924S since and never really looked back. A guy with a 931 wants me to change his timing belt so I'll make a video on that soon! Good luck with what whichever car you decide to buy!

    im prepping my car for paint now (also zermatt silver) just wondering if there is a code you give to the paint shop or if they just know how to get the factory color. also, what did you use to paint the door handles? thanks.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому +1

      There's an option code sticker behind the carpet in the trunk behind the license plate. It also has the paint code listed. Zermatt is LY7Y which will help the paint shop identify the paint. That said, I use rustoleum professional satin black for the the door handles. Thanks!

    Silly question but what kind of adhesive would you recommend for the 944 Badge?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому +1

      I used 3M super 90 spray adhesive on the last one I installed and liked that better than the gooey trim adhesive I used on this car. That said, when I have the chance I just buy new ones. They’re around $40 but saves me so much time rather than fix them up and apply glue since they come with the pre cut adhesive pad already applied. Thanks!

    One more question for anyone who might know. Im trying to adjust the headlights on my 83 944. There is a tiny gap at the fender and a large gap at the nose piece. Anyone know how to adjust the lights laterally? I have heard of shims but im not sure the early cars were designed with them.

    • @edredas
      @edredas  4 роки тому

      Hi, hard to say what the issue could be. There should be shims on all cars but often after a respray they will get left out by mediocre repair shops. Also the gaps can be adjusted by loosening the bolts and moving the bucket around, so without pics it can be difficult to see what the exact problem is. Are you on Facebook? I have a group where you can post pics and them maybe we would be able to help! Thanks!

    • @ODoyleRoolz22
      @ODoyleRoolz22 4 роки тому +1

      @@edredas thanks for the reply, i spent about 3 hours last night trying to line up the headlights, my car has had a few "bumps" in the front end so im sure it would be easier if everything was straight. i mostly got everything in a good place now with almost consistent gaps. On one side the bucket was about 1/2" too far outwards, I ended up fiddling with the light cover mounting tabs as nothing else was working, seemed to do the trick although probably not the right way to do it.

    I've noticed 944s have one open faced lug nut per wheel, why is that?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      I’m not sure. The phone dial wheels have recessed lugs but the cookies and Fuchs don’t but the Fuchs were also used on the 911’s

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому

      I was on my phone, I can't believe I misread this. I thought you were asking why the lugs stuck out instead of being recessed but now I can see that you were asking about the lugs with holes for the wheel locks.

      Can I ask what they charge out there for a paint job like that? Would you describe it as a 'good' paint job, or an 'Earl Scheib' paint job?

    • @edredas
      @edredas  6 років тому +1

      Its a $1000 for a respray. I think the Earl Scheib and Maaco jobs look so bad because they just mask off tail lights and spray over everything. They paint over the rubber gaskets and don't remove the bumpers so you see rough spots that ruins the look of the paint. You'll also end up with ugly paint lines and over spray on everything. Since I removed most things it turned out nicer than a cheap respray and the paint job is solid. This was a rush job so I had to get the car to paint and didn't have time to prep somethings. I asked them to prep them, which I shouldn't have. If I had more time to prep everything and pull the doors and all the glass like I usually do, then this would have been a 10/10 car... but the owner didn't want all that so I just did what I could and I would say it's a 9/10. It could be a lot better but for a cheap rush job it looks pretty amazing. Many times the painters at these places are really good but are let down by poor prep. That's what you're going to get for $1000 bucks. I would not let these places do any bodywork to my cars or mask things off. They use a rotary sander with 180 grit that shows right through and looks like 30 grit with paint over it. That said, for me to block sand the car with 400 grit and remove parts you're looking at another grand... so this was still pretty cheap but a step above what you would get at those places... maybe way better considering I replaced a bunch of parts that they never would. :D
