My friends and I got our hands on some when I was in high school and one of us was dumb enough to try it voluntarily. It worked, but it took a lot longer than it does on TV.
@@shanjidahossain5279 Mike was that kid that will inhale or eat or insert anything for a laugh. He actually tried it because he'd seen it on TV and wanted to know if it was true. He took 4-5 giant huffs of Fisher technical grade chloroform, and after like 30-60 seconds he was about to say that it wasn't doing anything to him... then he got all wobbly, took a few steps, and collapsed against a table and broke a bunch of the glassware we'd also stolen from the chemistry lab. He also woke up almost immediately after. :D The bottle said carcinogen and none of us thought it was worth repeating the experiment. I think that unless you're physically able to overpower someone and keep them there for at least a minute without being interrupted, it won't work as an abduction aid.
It takes like 3 big inhales till you feel it. Your fingers start to tingle and you get lightheaded. If you inhale for longer, you kinda get this vertigo like sensation and feel weak, like you cant really lift your arms/legs and for me it acually make my vision lag, like you turn your head and the view lags behind for like half second. And then you just pass out for few seconds. Its kinda boring and very unhealthy. The hungover is smaller than the one from ether and it also is not so obvious on your breath.
So if chloroform takes around 5 mins to knock someone out then movie/show/book scenes involving chloroform could either be 5 mins of comedic drunk-like antics or 5 mins of psychological suspense.
I believe it works by blocking the calcium channels in nerve cells and neurons which slows down the central nervous system. But it is potentially carcinogenic. Diethyl Ether however is highly flammable.
When i was a kid sometimes i caught skunks in traps , i read you could fix a syringe full of this stuff on a long stick and give him night night without getting sprayed . Never got to try it
Chloroform does not smell like acetone even a little bit. Its more like Dichloromethane, Diethylether, Dioxane. Even hexane has a more similar smell than acetone. Thats like comparing the taste of grapes and lemons.
You make it yourself, it's quite easy. 50 parts bleach (standard household 7.5% bleach) to 1 part acetone, chill the ingredients in a freezer for one to two hours before mixing (or the reaction will overheat/boil, but don't let it ice over either, you want it just barely above freezing temp) in a glass beaker or large glass pitcher with strong stirring as you slowly add in the acetone. And add in a half dozen cubes of ice as well (wait until you're done stirring, the cubes get in the way of your spoon). After mixing thoroughly, cover the lid with aluminum foil and let it sit for a few hours at room temp. Once the two-three hours are over you'll notice a thin oily looking layer at the bottom of the container, that's your chloroform, which is more dense than water. You can get a little more to crash out of solution by adding about a quarter cup of salt per gallon of bleach, once the solution has warmed to room temp so the salt will dissolve. After stirring to dissolve all the salt let it sit for another hour or two to fully settle out. Once that wait is over, pour off/decant the top layer of water into a sink (rinse the sink really well after you're done) until you get close to the chloroform layer, then get a smaller glass container and pour the entire contents into it, at which point you repeat the process until you've minimized the water layer on top. Once you've got most of the water out you can use an absorbent cloth like a paper towel and just barely touch the surface of the very thin water layer to suck it up to expose the chloroform. Voila, you now have chloroform. Store in a brown glass bottle in a fridge for no more than a couple months, if any longer you need to spike it with about 3-5% pure ethanol to prevent phosgene gas production (the stuff is farking _deadly)._ That's the cheap and dirty way though, ideally you just use a separatory funnel to isolate the chloroform from the water layer. Taking things a step further, you can run a distillation, and/or add in a drying agent like dehydrated magnesium sulfate/oven-baked Epsom salt to pull out the remaining water (chloroform can dissolve a very small amount of water into itself)
Bait and switch. You talk about everything BUT how long it takes. And how long it takes depends on the concentration in the air. It's not universal. So there is no answer to your question because it is a poorly worded question. Especially for a science channel. The effects of a medicine and the time to peak plasma concentration is different depending on how much medicine you give, how quickly and the individual's metabolism. No two people will react the exact same to a drug. Some might act similarly. Some very much so. But not always. And this video just perpetuates that myth.
fbi i swear i’m just a writer
That's why I'm here too lol

If I’m ever in a person who’s put in a situation I wanna know how long to hold my breath while breaking out of this situation if I’m able too
I just had a stroke reading your comment.

I don’t think that how it work, when someone approached you with chloroform on ur face, human instinct is to panic. It’s over.

At that point, holding the rag over their mouth and nose is doing more work
they don't use that in movies, it's another product

It isnt too bad, it worked very well for an O chem solvent when doing oxidations and halogenations.
Looking for info on liver damage from chloroform, specifically necrosis
