Haven't played Baldur's Gate 3 yet because my PC is trash, but Larian seems to have kept the old carry around dozens of barrels strategy from Divinity: Original Sin...

It really showed me that trying to make a video game with fully interactive environments is both fun and entirely immersion breaking.
It's worth a play through, but honestly it ain't all that..
It even got buffed. Damaging or killing chests no longer destroys the loot.
I'd say the barrels are generally less effective than in DOS, but yeah it definitely still exists. I'd also suggest your PC likely isn't too trash to play BG3, as it runs pretty well even on very low power hardware like the steamdeck. Might have to turn everything in the settings down a fair bit but most computers even fairly old ones should be able to get it to play acceptably (that said it looks so nice with more powerful hardware if you plan on getting a new PC any time soon its probably worth the wait.
At least the Necromancer has noticed the explosive barrels. That makes him smarter than most FPS cannon fodder.

I just realized... This series is the first time I've actively rooted against the main characters
Every time I get to the gobbo fort in Act 1 I always use Barrelmancy on Dror Ragzlin. He's sitting there yapping away from his throne about how great the Absolute is while I'm just settin' up mah barrels. Head on up to the rafters, cast a firebolt, and watch the fireworks. On one occasion I did the 4 Halfling Barbarian strat of loading up the entire interior of the fort with barrels and cleared the entire place in a glorious chain reaction.
Tonight I'm about to enter the creche on another playthrough and intend on setting up some Barrelmancy in each of the rooms to make clearing the place on the way out a lot easier and more fun. :^)

In my game Karlach was usually carrying around three barrels or so to Berserk Throw at things that annoyed her. Which was a lot of things for some reason.

This is why you use the actual most powerful spell; enlarged featherfalling owlbear from the top barrel/box. More damage, less aoe, no burning.

If you're doing this in the TTRPG instead of BG3, it's better to use horns of gunpowder instead of barrels. They're cheaper and lighter per unit damage they deal, and since you could stack a bunch in a five-foot cube, you can use Create Bonfire to ignite them instead of Fireball. You'd think you'd just have to ignite one and they'd all go, but gunpowder doesn't start fires.
Too flashy. We used a scroll of Improved Invisibility on a Statuette of Power: Lion and used that to accomplish terrible, terrible deads...with less collateral damage.

In good old Second Edition AD&D, we just filled the floor with wood and hay, and used control flames spell to make it burn quickly. The way it worked, it's moslty like Avatar's Firebending.
I mean, Nixie could have survived, she only takes half damage fron fire. XD
And maybe, if we got lucky, she survives but her clothes don't

I started a new mage in Skyrim that mainly sets things on fire. I wonder who inspired me to make that kind of character. By the way you get only one guess as if you needed more then one.

Barrelmancy is the best magic in Baldur's gate 3. I used approximately 70ish barrels of smokepowder stacked around Raphael. The sudden lag of so many explosions was completely worth the time it took to set up.

Ah yes, this was the same tactic I used in BG3 for the part in Act 2 when Halsin goes into a magical portal to save Thaniel. Just loaded up the area where all the monsters were going to spawn with barrels organized into lanes so that it would funnel them in one direction, waited for them to congregate and BOOM!!!!
Lae'zel and Karlach were only slightly singed. I would have used Shadowheart's fire bolt cantrip instead of one of my fire arrows (I was playing as ranger) but I actually wanted to hit the barrel. :P
Nixie has definitely leveled up a bit. The appearance changes just sell it all the more. The question is if intelligence is still her dump stat?

Put Arcane Lock on the staircase behind the fireplace and she just stands there like an idiot while you do whatever you want.
The next spell of barrelmancy is box compiling. Putting a box into a box into another box, and throwing or dropping said box on a foes head.
Or using telekinesis to sweep the compiled container back and forth over all the opponents until they are a bloody smear.
You know, I feel sorry for the poor necromancer. He just wants to do a good job as a villain!

Just as a reminder, you can bring 20+ explosive barrels to the House of Hope and set them up around the pyramids as a chain reaction when you first enter. Very useful when you fight Raphael later on.

This remind me of a time one of my players killed a group of monsters by dousing the room with wine and flour then casting burning hands on the whole thing. Everything was on fire, but he was able to get out before facing any real damage.
All these decades later, I'm glad to see the trick we used in Ultima VII hasn't lost its currency.
