- In an epic fantasy age of dragons and elves, one heroic leader must wrangle his adventuring party and save the realm. Whether in a real life friend group, a world-saving fellowship, or a DnD campaign, we've all struggled to schedule a good start time. Promptness can play a critical role in conquering all-powerful evil wizards. Gotta get an early start.
We’ve been a channel for like 7 years and had never made a Lord of the Rings/ House of the Dragon/ Game of Thrones style sketch before this. That’s wild. Tell us what you think!

We're Chris W. Smith and Jack De Sena (aka Chris & Jack). We've been friends for years and love making high-quality, high-concept sketch comedy. Chris was a Blue Man in Blue Man Group. As a voice actor, Jack played Sokka in Avatar the Last Airbender and Callum in the Dragon Prince. In 2016 we united to create this channel, confusingly titled “Chris & Jack”, which has served as a shared platform to write, produce, direct, edit, and star in our own stuff. We're releasing comedic sketches of all shapes and sizes the first and third Friday of every month. Sci-Fi, Heists, animation, movie tropes, absurdist bits, and plenty of fun new experiments. But above all else, friendship.

I'd watch a whole series of thath! You are amazing!
While watching the video before seeing the comment I told myself, we definitely need these guys playing a ttrpg! Hooraay
jack whyd u end 100 thigns to do before high school and did u liek it
Some people don’t like this extended cut of LOTR but I feel this dialogue really adds so much depth to the characters and their motivations. 👍
Haha this is the best comment.
it's almost like sum kind of... smeiling frids....

Nah, because the books are legit written like this, and it legit makes them feel very verisimilar.
@@grzegorzbrzeczyszczykiewic563 Yeah, for example Frodo leaves the Shire a full year after Bilbo's party. 3-4 chapters into the book. But the entire remainder of the trilogy occurs in the following 13 months.

Damn, too real.
I think they went half past it. So... they're outside?

I just realized it was so easy for the blonde guy to find the grove because it’s literally where he lives.
Wouldn't it be easier to camp out in the grove instead of everyone's respective homes? Seems it would solve most problems and accomodate everyone!
@@fildariusv7045 Sure, but they don't seem to have their camping gear with them, plus they can't have a fire due to the whole "secrecy" thing, so they're going to be spending the night on the cold, hard ground. I don't think they'll be very rested after that!
@@fildariusv7045 they would have to go all the way home to get their yoga mats though
@@TheMagicRata journey of a thousand miles... involves days of hiking at minimum. I work 14-20 miles from my house and google says that is a 5 hour hike. Just hitting google maps and a random point around a thousand miles away turned out to be over a 15 day hike. They are camping along the way and likely wont be able to use a fire the whole way.
@fildariusv7045 What, and just crash in the Elf's bedroom? He might not be cool with that!
another classic addition to the "guys in a trope-y setting encountering social grievances due to miscommunication/the hesitation to be honest about ones feelings, but then overcoming it because their friendship/heist/1000 mile journey is more important than anything else" genre of C&J sketches
Truly, some things are universal
Wasn't Social Grievances that star wars robot guy?
No complaints here. I love what they do, and they bring me joy and laughter every time.
Every story in existence is based on this kind of layering.
Metaphor layer X, followed by real world application Y.
Star Trek isn't about aliens and high tech equipment. 3:10 to Yuma isn't about shootin' guns and spittin' tabaccy. General Hospital isn't about medicine. X-Men isn't about kids with super-powers. These are just the layers we put on the question "How do we get through life?"
This is a short, so you can't do Tolstoy levels of nuance.
This is a comedy, so sharp contrasts are necessary.
This is Chris and Jack, so fine editing and oddly great acting with rhythmic back-and-forth dialogue is the substrate.
Is there a formula? Maybe. Is there a lack of attention to observation of the strata apparent in our everyday life? Absolutely not.
Chris and Jack bring us high quality stuff with a regularity that rivals those paid by gigantic systems designed to do the same, and they don't seem to need much to do it. Every skit is bursting with their love for the craft and they are precisely what this world needs more of.
They're just the kinds of artists I want to support.
@@unrealnewsin full agreement! i hope very much my comment had no ring of dissatisfaction. the formula, the pattern of it, it's an immortal horse. chris and jack understand very well that the humour of it doesn't purely come from juxtaposition
all these stories have heart at the centre of them, chris and jack understand that fully. these sketches should never be characterized as parodies. in their writing and performance is a clear understanding of their inspirations that can only come from love of the narratives they're paying homage to
so excited for julysixth park 2024 :))
guys bein dudes
I love that the dog just decided to lie down, like this debate was cut down to its more critical points and that it went on for much longer than what we saw.
Probably not the first time the party had a debate like this, dog knows it’ll be awhile
It's like every meeting , ever.
I love that you picked up on that, I went back to see it 😂
EGGS?!?
MACRO?!?
Eggs.
I love how that guy has an obvious aversion to eggs.
The CGI trees are distracting from the real dragons.
Chris’ CGI beard next to his real hair was also a strange choice.
@@erifetimyeah! My thoughts exactly! It's like, did they not learn from justice league?
It’s LA in the summer, all the real trees are burning
@modalmixture As a person who lives in Death Valley (secretly), I can confirm the trees are actually NOT burning.
But that could be because there aren't really any trees around...
I also thought that
That's when you just throw up your hands and make camp at the secret location.
But what about the eggs? You haven’t thought about the eggs needed for a well-powered hike! Unbelievable…

@@wulsibeyin6362Eggs!?
@@wulsibeyin6362 Eggs?!
But they don't have all their gear and provisions. They need to trek home and get everything first. And what if they have trouble sleeping in new locations? They really need to get a good night rest at home before an adventure like this one.
This feels strangely relatable despite me never having the problem to get up at first light.
This is basically planning with a group of friends once you get past a certain age.
But that's exactly the problem
You've got to get up before first light so you have time to get to the secret meeting place!
I expected to like it based on my history as a complete fantasy nerd but I’ve grown up and now this is reminding me of most of my work meetings 🤣
Agreeing to retain the emotional benefit of “first light” as an idiom but with the mutual understanding that they literally mean half an hour past first light for practicality’s sake is such a brilliant representation of how colloquial language evolves among social groups
To be fair, here in Spain if you agreed to meet at first light it would be implicitly understood that that definitely and unambiguously means no sooner than half an hour after first light
Just recently heard a spanish woman argue with her german boss on the tram about her being almost there already and not understanding why he’s so upset
I love half past first light. First light obviously comes from a time when there would be about six useful terms for times of day or night, ranging in granularity from about 1 to about 6 hours, dawn, dusk, noon, night, afternoon, evening. People would have been used to it taking a half day just to assemble a party. Half past will have barely existed until the industrial revolution
@@stevecarter8810I think they would have had a much more detailed understanding of other natural phenominon (relative to where they lived) so that they could not only be more specific about times (which was probably less needed but important when it was) but in areas where first light was at dramatically different times throughout the year, they would have adjusted the timing of their day to day activities based on the position of the moon/sun and other more nuanced things. That way they would be able to sleep though first light before getting up stretching and having their eggs (or maybe green juice).
@@jacobpaint Events like dawn, sun up, first light, happen quite close together so give finer control than the rest of daylight hours. I think you're right about local observations. You might agree to meet when the church tower's shadow falls on the common, using it as a short of impromptu sundial. Of course if it's cloudy it's anyone's guess what time that signifies.
I'm old enough that I was a teen before mobile phones and I remember honouring arrangements like "see you at the fountain at 7". Got the wrong fountain or someone was delayed by half an hour, it was guesswork and luck whether the appointment survived. I imagine before clocks it was one level more vague and people had to be all the more tolerant.
Even when early timekeepers existed, you would have to go to the town clock to set the time and carry it home. Punctuality was a virtue was a result of factories and trains. Before that you would have your breakfast when it was ready, after your stretches. But no eggs, please.
My favorite part is how the dog is just there. It wasn't even originally part of the video, according to the post. It just wandered onto the set, and it just chills there. The dog was, in other words, canonized. I love it so much.
“Even your kindred wolf seems sad.” Followed by the cut to the dog was my favorite line. I absolutely love that the dog was unplanned.
'A journey of a thousand miles - each longer than the last.'
Erm...😂
I mean, a mile walking on concrete is shorter than a mile fording a river which is shorter than a mile over a mountain.
Shorter time, that is.
Actually, shorter distance, too, if you aren't taking the third dimension into account (like drawing lines on a map).
@@robspiess True, true...
But what if you're fording a river OVER a mountain, whilst using a concrete path? That's the real question!
you try walking the 996th mile and then tell me it's the same as the 1st one
@@benjaminqmorris Walk that one first. Simple.
Cue Jack: “wait, so I’m a little confused here. Are we saying that each subsequent mile is longer than the one that came previous to it, or are we saying that the final mile of the stretch is shorter than each of the others. I just feel it’s a little ambiguous, and like, I want to understand and be on the same sheet of parchment as you guys, you know.”
the dog was like the main focus for me i love him so much oh my god

I don't even set my alarm until Second Light. I had some First Light blocking curtains delivered from the Amazon and I think the late start really helps me get the energy I need to exercise my Dark Rituals of during the waning fourth of the evening crest.
Alas, my First Light blocking curtains were stolen off my porch after their long journey up the Amazon. Perhaps this shows that our location is not secret enough.
I love describing time this way, hour of the crow is way more interesting than "four am"
THE WITCHING HOUR
I would like to learn what hour these names means
The wadokei was a Japanese time system that divided the day into the 12 animals. Hour of the rabbit etc.
In ASOIAF they call it the hour of the wolf, when the night is darkest, before the dawn.
Chris and Jack, Zach Reino AND Dom Fera?! Did not expect this many of my favourite people in one video today. :D
i was mostly paying attention to the audio then the elf started speaking more and I was like "wait a minute...." 😆
This is how I found out that was Dom fera lmao
"You shoulders attack your ears" is a great way to see that somebody is not entirely loving the vibe of the whole plan.
Right? 😂 I need to use that line at some point
Was quite the quote.
I like how the doggo had to lay down and take a breather while the puny mortals had to bicker about their plans for a long walk. Doggo will be rested and ready for a long walk whenever they stop arguing.
Is Doggo not mortal?
Doggo is preparing to ride at first light
@@robbieboydudeguy
Right. Doggo is WAY ahead of them.
@@JackVermicelli
Doggo is mortal, but doggo is not puny mortal; doggo is fierce mortal.
I'm noticing a pattern where Chris plays characters who are the idea guy/planner of a group, but the group always questions/disagree with his plans.
Which is ironic cuz sokka is the idea guy…
People usually agree with him tho
1:50 i love how the dog is already asleep
gotta say laughed pretty hard at that once i saw ur comment
I'm not gonna lie, every time there was a group shot I looked down at the dog.
This feels like how every DnD campaign starts for me
Arguing about ultimately trivial logistics is one of the most valuable parts of any DnD experience
I really love the wholesome endings we get. Like yeah minor grievances are really funny. But bringing it back around to friendship is just really satisfying to watch.
I agree on that!! :)
This is an eggselent short! (Getting 8 hours of rest a night is indeed the biggest difference between D&D and real life.)
Eggs?!
If I could consistently get 8 hours of rest my live would already be soo much better.
Maybe domesticating fire was a mistake.
I love heists, time travel, spy films, and aliens, but it's always exciting to see Chris and Jack try out a new genre (high fantasy) and knock it out of the park! Loved this!
1:27 - Plan P was such a good, missed opportunity.
Love Zach Reino! Great to see him in this.
YES! Eggs?!?!
“Eggs!?”
Monks put candles between their toes and when they felt their toes getting too hot it would be the perfect time to wake up.
Yeah, that's great. But I roll a lot in my sleep, so I would be afraid I'd start like a fire if I did that, you know? Plus the candle shop is like, kinda out of the way for me.
"Too hot" you mean burned 😅
That is some NONSENSE man
Knowing the kindred wolf just showed up and is indeed, not a paid actor makes this 1000 times better. I vote naming the wolf Eggs.
Life is pain, then you watch a Chris & Jack sketch, then it goes back to being pain but for 3-10 mins, everything washes away
How does "nothing" get washed away? I don't know bro, sound like your low key raw dogging this video and dragging it through the mud.
...Then another thing! Are Chris and Jack sketches not a vital and essential part of your life?! If you proclaim that "Life is nothing" You are fouling the good name of our esteemed (youtube) creators by saying that they THEMSELVES ARE NOTHING.
Alternatively should you not consider Chris and Jack not a part of your life, and thus your insult not being directed towards our creators. The doors to the occult are always open for those who seek it. You must simply open your own door and invite our creators into your life, then you shall find that the nothingness your life entails will be straddled with fulfillment.
Life isn’t nothing.
We’re powering a light bulb for a birthday party.

At this point they all should just build tents there at the spot.

Kindred Wolf is so adorable. I wouldn't mind her in more sketches.
1:00 Each mile longer than the last
If he'd said, "each mile FEELS longer than the last," you'd understand perfectly. And yet, when someone says, "It's cold out," you don't insist they say, "it FEELS cold out," because you're not a pedantic arse in that situation, so what makes you think that's okay here?
We need a viva la dirt league and Chris and Jack collab
YO HEY YO
This one is cooking (not eggs tho)
Never thought about how hard waking up on time for stuff would’ve been before alarms were invented
I mean it wouldn't really have been a huge issue since before timekeeping you just went by daylight - and if you go to bed when it gets dark you'll have no issues getting up by the time the sun goes up, even in summer. If for whatever godforsaken reason you had to get up at other times there were plenty of ways to accomplish that, either just getting to bed earlier or in cases like guard duty you'd just be woken up be the previous shift. By the time semi-accurate timekeeping was available there were out there signals, like church bells in any respectable settlement in Europe
Love the world building of a 6 minutes sketch 👌 chefs kiss
The way the one guy who isn’t Chris, Jack, or the other other guy says “EGGS?!” is unreasonably funny to me
Did not expect musical improv genius Zach Reino in here, fits so well though!
if only we got an hour of musical improv during this sketch, main thing it's missing. least we got "Misha the set dog (who just wandered into that shot)" as an adequate replacement
The difficulty with waking up at any time that isn't declared by a rooster really shows off something we barely even consider these days. Having reliable timable alarms really is such a convenience. Yet we all hate them.
So glad I woke at first light to see this
You were supposed to already be watching by first light.
I see musical comedy genius Zach Reino, I click the video.
3:55 is it just me or does he seem too into "the fingers of the gods"?
I LOVE how the elf says "Eggs?" every time they're mentioned, like he's completely blindsided by the very idea of eggs being involved.
Was just getting into your older videos and you just happened to upload. What a surprise
It's the best UA-cam discovery for me last year. The only channel I took time to watch a bunch of old content
Please let this be an ongoing saga

Real talk, we're all thrilled about the wheel, but alarm clocks really are the best thing we've ever discovered, as a species.
I actually felt joy. wow. that has been a long while, jsut.. it's so good that with a bit of discussion everyone was better for it and nobody was left sadder just... I felt something in my chest! amazing skit
That dog was very good and it knew it.
The dog chilling there the whole time kills me
I love this! Someone should add this to an actual movie where they "meet at first light."
Eggs?🥚🥚🥚
Eggs?
I came for the doggo, and I stayed for the comedy.
Also the doggo.
Doggo was best actor. Totally believed she was a wolf. Knew her marks. Knows how to work the camera. Doesn't upstage other actors. And most importantly, knows her lines, no flubs, no notes!
Zach Reino is such a good inclusion for this sketch, absolutely incredible satire of how fantasy elves act, and fantastic writing too!
So basically, a normal D&D session where the players are trying to come up with a plan
I forgot his name but the guy with the blonde wig killed me on Make Some Noise and Smartypants. It's great to see him in your sketch. Talent attracts talent.
dom fera, now that's someone I haven't seen in a long time.
excuse me sir! your PIZZA sir! I believe you ordered it with EXTRA CHEEEEEEEEEZ?
This can be easily solved with a sleepover
Idk why they gave up on the pee plan so quick. Kept sleeping through my alarm so I’ve been using it for your years. It’s never let me down just ask my kindred wolf!
“we ride at dawn!”
Please leave me. The zombies can have me

Tough to write good endings to sketches. You guys nailed it!
You two give my inner monologue a voice and I'm here for it.
I like how both Chris and Jack gesture to the elf speaking about the importance of rest, since both have reasons to think that it acts as evidence for their owns arguments, despite making opposing cases. It feels like an organic moment of conversation
The constantly backlit elf is my favorite subtle thing
This is so funny to watch with the BTS knowledge about the random dog that crashed their set. 😂

Super wholesome ending!
I love it that while this is going on. The dog is like basically passing out the entire time.
I think you mean "kindred wolf."
I once saw a similar sketch with two legions getting ready to fight. They agree to battle at first light and then end up complaining that is actually quite early and end up with a noon or 6PM battle plan by the end of it. This version was better.
“A thousand miles, each longer than the last.” Excuse me??
This was actually very realistic to a typical business meeting.
these sketches never feel tired man. im so glad to see new ones, forces me to watch the other videos for the next half hour before feeling guilty about not working
