    I have no interest in dating a 19 year old, but I think that a lot of arguments on age gaps are kind of circular. An argument could be made that the lack of common ground across ages even for friendships is a long term *consequence* of cultural age segregation, not some common-sense argument for why it should exist.
    I'm an elder millennial with some much older Gen X siblings, and the ability to form meaningful friendships across a 10 or 20 year gap is literally just a socialization issue.

    • @EyesDontCry
      @EyesDontCry 3 місяці тому +31

      It's also just weirdly specific.
      Like people have different experiences for a variety of reasons, it doesn't mean they can't just enjoy each other's presence as people and have a bond.
      You've got friends from different countries, friends from different economic backgrounds, friends who have struggled and friends who have not.
      These are hurdles nobody denies that, but just because something is a hurdle doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be overcome.
      It's the mindset of "if it's going to fail why do it anyway" but doesn't the same just go for life. Like okay well I'm gonna die anyway and all my friends will die anyway so should I just not bother having any relationships?
      Life is fleeting and relationships more so, just because it's likely to end doesn't mean it shouldn't be pursued. I find it weird if someone is like " I NEED a 20 year old partner" because maybe you have some odd motivations, but if you just so happened to have an age difference, you shouldn't HAVE to say no. If it makes you personally uncomfortable that's fine, it's just odd to then dictate that to other people when I'm sure they have other reasons to not date someone that you wouldn't personally agree with.
      Friendly advice is fine, like "hey this isn't likely to work out so generally avoid this" but having a whole moral outcry about it is just too much.

    • @Jet-ij9zc
      @Jet-ij9zc 3 місяці тому +34

      Also people massively overestimate how hard it is to make a connection with someone of a different age group.
      I'm 24, back when I was 21 I worked with a 45 y-o. Most of our work was done in clients house so we'd spend 40 hours a week either at someone's house or in a truck together. Eventually you figure out things you have in common and their interest will rub off on you to some extent (and vice-versa).
      People assume it's close to impossible to make a friendship/relationship with someone in a different age group because they barely ever go past first meeting with someone of a different age group.

Because people do be out here acting like everyone could reasonably have had a kid at 18-25, and not everyone is cut out for that. Some people took longer to mature and get their shit together. They could be more in tune with their with someone in their 20s than someone their own age. It's not as simple as number different bad. Honestly, as long as everyone is happy and it's not like grooming or anything, even if I think it's weird, I hesitate to fault people because everyone values different things, and it's up to everyone to find their own happiness.

      It's "weird" in the sense that someone walking by such a couple might give an offhand negative opinion to the person next to them and never think about it again, but that's not where we are heading culturally at this point; there are people who literally think that a man in his 30s/40s dating a woman in her early 20s is a "groomer," arguing that because brains max out their development at 25, the early 20s woman can't consent. I'm not gonna go to bat for 40+ year old men dating 18/19 year olds, nearly everyone can agree on that, but the cultural argument has shifted considerably. I'm sorry, but if you think that anyone under 25 can't consent, your opinion shouldn't be taken seriously.

    I'm 24 and I'm exclusively attracted to dudes who are 60+. It's not like the exact age that matters, but I'm into the look of older guys and I like the idea of their greater world experience. I get that it's weird. I have a wonderful dad and have no issues there. But the people I am dating are older than him.
    I am not really romantic and I doubt I'll get married to anyone, but I've had a lot of fun hookups. I am very independent and I am sensitive to potential for a power difference to lead to an abusive situation, it can happen without an age difference but I feel like the risk is higher with one. I've been careful and will continue to be. I've talked about how it feels from the other end as well with some of the guys - a lot of them say it makes them feel younger, they remember their own early sexual exploration at a time when it was somewhere between illegal and taboo. They like it, I like it. I also know that there's a surprisingly large (albeit still relatively small) number of people like me. If it grosses you out then just don't think about it. People have their own sexual preferences, if it doesn't hurt anyone then let it be.
    I'm 24 hours late to this video so most people who are going to watch probably already have, but feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer to the best of my ability. I'm not shy

    • @JPK314
      @JPK314 Рік тому +17

      @@revolversnake126 Ok so there are two dimensions to this for me. I'll start with the non-sexual one: the age gap itself. This is pretty simple - in pretty much every culture there's an idea of "respect your elders" - basically people who are older than you 1. Have wisdom and 2. Have valuable lived experience, and have earned some degree of respect, or at least should be listened to. Whether or not you agree with that in the general case (respect should always be earned, etc) the fact remains that most younger people (including myself) apply this to most older people, at least the ones whose beliefs generally already line up with our own. That puts a power dynamic in place in one way.
      The other dimension is sexually motivated. I am fiercely independent, but in the bedroom I enjoy being more submissive. You can use your imagination here, but generally acting this way with newly met people is on the more dangerous side of hooking up, especially considering the prevalence of dating apps where this information is present from the start, was probably involved in it being a match, and some sexual talk that can involve that may happen prior to meeting

    Relationships are a two-way street. I’d argue that in many age gap relationships, the maturity problem doesn’t really rest with the younger partner; the older partner may have some issues connecting with their own generation and is gravitating towards a younger partner because of that. This certainly doesn’t make it OK though, and there’s a lot to consider.
    Even dating something only a few years younger than you leads to some pretty huge gaps. In the last four years, such an insane amount of things have changed for people in high school and college that if I dated anyone who never went through that, I feel like we’d have a huge experience gap.

Not that there's anything wrong with doing you, but even if your successful, your not as content as you'd think you'd be, while even people who are half assing platonic relationships seem to be having a better experience. And this goes for Irl dating, having as much sex as you want, no stress of marriage or kids, doing pretty well in looks and not hooking up with aholes. And a lot of people's experiences aren't that.
      The fact of the matter is that for most people, platonic relationships have both a higher floor and a higher ceiling, are more varied and dependable.
      There's nothing wrong with liking what you like, but dating and hooking up are two different things.
