    I find this generational gap around something like table manners, of all things, to be ginormously petty but also interesting to see that rift between older and younger people. My parents, for example, they were pretty old school about this sort of stuff; Only eat when everyone has their food, you must hold the fork in a specific way in your left hand and the knife in the other hand regardless if you may be left handed or not, you need to place them down while dressing the table in specific ways, yadda yadda etc. etc. Meanwhile, a friend of mine was brought up a little more loosely when it came to that, to a dogma that essentially was "just don't be gross by throwing or vomiting across everyone on the table and you'll be fine", and when we've had meals at restaurants together we had our meals essentially the same way as one another. I personally do not care a iota if someone starts to eat before I did, I don't want to make anyone stare at their plate at a restaurant watching their food get cold because I haven't gotten mine yet. If anything, I prefer it because seeing them enjoy theirs would only hype me up more for mine, I truly see no point in waiting.

      tipping as well. When I was a kid, tipping was (supposed to be) as a reward for excellent service, but as I grew up it became good manners to tip because the minimum wage earner relies on it and they can't control 90% of the things that we tend to think of as "good service" in the first place (food quality/temperature/timing, having enough time to share between the tables they're assigned, etc). Especially once we got delivery as a norm and tipping delivery drivers was introduced

    The only reason "waiting for everyone to get their food before eating" ever became a thing surely must've been because it maximizes time available to talk. If the people start eating at different times there'll always be at least one person unable to talk due to being preoccupied with consuming food.

    In Sweden servers have a hand-held computer with the total itemized bill and they go round the table and everybody says: "I had this one and this one and this one", and they will tap the items and split it out and you pay, then the next person said what they had, the server will split it out, and they pay. Except that you have to wait for 5 card transactions to go through instead of one, it is not of any inconvenience to anyone because they have a system that supports this kind of process. And cash does more or less not exist anymore here. Tipping in Sweden is not really a thing except when you go to dinner, but if 5 people pay for each of their dinner, they might get 5 tips, so that little bit of extra work might get them quite the bonus. One person paying for everybody is of course normal in a family or with close friends, but if you pay for 5 people for dinner you are out quite a chunk of change and then you technically go out 4 more times with the same people for it to equal out and that is a bit of a pain. Plus you don't want to take something expensive or something extra if you know that someone else has going to pay for it, so just split your bill and pay what you had and that's it.

    I truly don't understand how anyone can disagree with NL's take on not waiting to eat your food. I swear people are just disagreeing to disagree. I cannot comprehend how anyone would think you should let your food that someone worked so hard to cook get cold because someone at the table doesn't have food yet.

      If you’re waiting so long for someone else’s food that yours goes cold then that is a terrible restaurant. Like, walk out and never come back bad.
      In reality, the food is only ever going to be another 40 seconds. Just sit and wait like a normal person

  • @elora512
    @elora512 7 місяців тому

    I agree, the difference in wait time is so far apart in cafés and restaurants. Someone's spaghetti comes first, they eat first, because the next baked cheese rice set comes out in another ten - fifteen minutes. The spaghetti would be cold from the A/C.

    He's right about the ice cream btw, and if anyone is pressed about it, just realize if you take 2 samples and you don't like either, you just go with the usual instead of risking a 3rd bad sample. It's as simple as that.

    Finding hair in food doesn't bother me but once I got chow mein from panda express and found 3 separate hairs while eating. The last one was long as fuck and It took like a full 3 seconds to pull all the way out of my mouth. Definitely didn't eat any more after that lol

    I think he's misunderstanding the point of manners in this situation. The point of waiting to eat is to show that your personal hunger is less important than everyone getting to start their meal at the same time. You are chosing the groups needs/enjoyment over your own. It is a way to show that you are more polite than just fulfilling your personal needs. As with all manners its a "signal" of politeness and can be dismissed by the other people, as NL said if someone says you don't have to wait, you don't have to.
    A similar example would be walking home in a group and reaching a crosswalk first (maybe twenty seconds before everyone else). The crosswalk light turns to "Walk" and you can either wait for your entire group to join you and walk together across or you can rush across and leave everyone behind potentially disrupting the group. You chose your personal need to get home/to your car over the group's cohesiveness. It's a minor thing but in my mind without any other stated intention it shows you are willing to put your needs first and don't think about other people. Which like all manners, the point is to show others you care and are willing to put them before you.

      My thoughts exactly, I don't know why people are reacting as there is absolutely no reason to perceive it as a sign of putting yourself before others. Of course, if you say anything, you can start eating, it's absolutely insane to insist on someone waiting after they would acknowledge it, but just chomping on your food instantly seems equally tone deaf to me 🤷

    So many things in this I agree with. the Egg is right once again. Although I will say, when I'm out to eat and my food gets there first I will feel like a dickhead for eating before you but I don't want you to feel like a dickhead for eating before me if it were to happen to you. I would feel like a dick for doing it even though I don't think other people doing it is a dick move. Weird but whatever.

    I don't have very strong feelings about this one way or the other really, but if I get my food first I am waiting until others get their food. If he insisted I ate then I would take like one bite and then wait.

    Take the utilitarian approach and go to a restaurant with shared plates. Everyone eats together once the food arrives. Dumplings, hot pot, middle eastern and african cuisine, etc Im sure theres more examples but that to me is a happy medium as it omits one social faux pas out of the hundreds being committed consciously or otherwise which is anxiety inducing constantly replaying in your head days and weeks afterwards on repeat for the rest of time and you know what fuck it im staying home eating chips
