I find this generational gap around something like table manners, of all things, to be ginormously petty but also interesting to see that rift between older and younger people. My parents, for example, they were pretty old school about this sort of stuff; Only eat when everyone has their food, you must hold the fork in a specific way in your left hand and the knife in the other hand regardless if you may be left handed or not, you need to place them down while dressing the table in specific ways, yadda yadda etc. etc. Meanwhile, a friend of mine was brought up a little more loosely when it came to that, to a dogma that essentially was "just don't be gross by throwing or vomiting across everyone on the table and you'll be fine", and when we've had meals at restaurants together we had our meals essentially the same way as one another. I personally do not care a iota if someone starts to eat before I did, I don't want to make anyone stare at their plate at a restaurant watching their food get cold because I haven't gotten mine yet. If anything, I prefer it because seeing them enjoy theirs would only hype me up more for mine, I truly see no point in waiting.

NL isn't that crazy with this joint but let's be honest he doesn't have the balls to do this at somebody else's birthday meal. Guy's waiting for Debbie's risotto to get rizzed up.
The only reason "waiting for everyone to get their food before eating" ever became a thing surely must've been because it maximizes time available to talk. If the people start eating at different times there'll always be at least one person unable to talk due to being preoccupied with consuming food. That being said, I don't give a shit. I'm not afraid of some silence, as long as everyone else feels the same way ofc.
the only manners that matter to me is being polite to service workers. If someone is cruel to someone who is obligated to be nice to them, I no longer want anything to do with that person
@@ckorp666 I think you're looking too much into it. You need to stop spending so much time on leftbook. Not everything has to harken back to some social commentary.
NL's ice cream rule is sort of interesting, but it disincentivizes being curious. Even flavor-curious customers that know deep down they might not like what they sample, so they're gonna sample a safe choice, then use they're other two samples to try new stuff. The rate of unnecessary sampling might go down or go up, it depends.
Agreed on the early food thing, but hard disagree on the ice cream. Often there's a flavor I know is bussin and don't need to try, and another which is more of a risk. I'll try the risk, and if I don't like it, get the one I know is good. Also two samples is the absolute max, three is just insane.
I personally don't eat until others have their food, not because I think it's polite, but because I feel it's kinda awkward sometimes. Usually I am mid conversation when I get my food and so theres no need to stop my line of thought just to eat before others. Unless I am starving, I wouldn't eat before other people have their food too. Have never experienced my food getting cold doing this. I wouldn't look down on someone for eating before others have their food, though.
I'm very situational when it comes to this. Company, whether there's an ongoing conversation, how hungry I really am, location, all of it can affect my decision to eat early or wait. But I dunno. No one here really gets mad if you eat when your food arrives, or wait. You're there to eat, chat, and have a good time. Not show off your "proper manners".
restaurants where I am from bring the food at the same time for all people in tiers. soup comes first for everyone who wanted soup and they can eat, no other foods are brought out until the soup is done. then comes various dishes (steak, cooked dishes etc). after all is eaten, comes desert.
I've noticed that manners aren't going away between generations, they're just shifting. Used to be "Wait until everyone has food, use the silverware". Now it's "Complain gently, don't make the life of this minimum wage earner hell"
tipping as well. When I was a kid, tipping was (supposed to be) as a reward for excellent service, but as I grew up it became good manners to tip because the minimum wage earner relies on it and they can't control 90% of the things that we tend to think of as "good service" in the first place (food quality/temperature/timing, having enough time to share between the tables they're assigned, etc). Especially once we got delivery as a norm and tipping delivery drivers was introduced
I've always been taught to just eat when the food arrives if the meal is warm and wait for everyone to get their food if it's cold. I wouldn't mind if someone starts eating their cold salad before I get my food, but I'd wait for others to get their food if I'm in a nice restaurant or with people I'm not very close with
If it's lunch at work with colleagues, I usually eat as soon as the food is at my table. When I am attending a dinner and food lands before me first, I slowly nibble on it and try to enjoy it while maintaining a conversation. No need to rush in that case.
NLs rants about social norms are so entertaining yet so mystifying to me. Maybe it's because of the tism but I just sorta do what I feel like and the people I hang out with do what they feel like and we just kinda roll with it.
I had this happen very recently. Me and my buddy got some hot wings together. He got his order like 5 seconds before mine i said feel free to eat dude. Like i dont give a shit if youre eating. The ice cream idea is insane like what if i saw a flavor and i wanted to see if it beat the regular? like this doesnt help him at all? it just makes the line longer since he also hast to try the regular to order the regular.
I think he's putting too much stock into efficiency and not enough into social flow. If we're having conversation and my linguine shows up, I'm not gonna hold my finger up as I shove forkfuls of noodles down my gullet because they're at the optimal temperature, I'm gonna wait until they're cold so my friend and I can talk about bullshit until their well done steak comes out and we can eat, as equals.
I can't decide if you are a hero for being a friend to the friendless or a villain for willingly associating with those who order their steak well done.
The correct answer here is you wait if you have your food and if you’re the waiting party you hit the people who have food with a “no no go ahead please don’t wait”
I agree, the difference in wait time is so far apart in cafés and restaurants. Someone's spaghetti comes first, they eat first, because the next baked cheese rice set comes out in another ten - fifteen minutes. The spaghetti would be cold from the A/C.
He's right about the ice cream btw, and if anyone is pressed about it, just realize if you take 2 samples and you don't like either, you just go with the usual instead of risking a 3rd bad sample. It's as simple as that.
I don't have very strong feelings about this one way or the other really, but if I get my food first I am waiting until others get their food. If he insisted I ate then I would take like one bite and then wait.
As a host at a restaurant i have had parents meeting their daughter and son-in-law come 5 minutes early and hand me their card before the rest of the party got there so that they could be the ones to pay for lunch.
as a southern homeschooler, i've never even heard of the no one eats till everything is out rule, i used to work in a resturaunt and we always timed our food so everything went to a table all at once but i've never gotten a situation where me or someone else threw a tantrum because someone ate before everyone else, it's wild that people actually -2 NL for such a reasonable stance
If I get my food I'm eating it, I went to eat cuz im fuckin hungry, im eating. That disturbs you enough to leave, good, I'll pay the bill and eat what you ordered
It’s not necessarily about manners. It’s about sharing the experience. It’s weird if one person is sitting there while everyone else at the table eats.
That whole eating manners dabacle must be an American thing. Like it exists here in europe but no one is going to go crazy if you start digging in first.
See this is one of those things where I wouldn’t do the same as NL, but I respect his opinion. I think I just default to not eating because I assume other people wouldn’t eat. If I knew everyone felt the way NL does, I would have no problem eating Edit: he’s very based about the hair take though
I think it isn't rude to eat first, but it is a kind gesture to wait. It's signals that you value their company more than the food, or something like that. But it should be seen as "going above and beyond" rather than the expected default.
You know you can just ask others at the table if they're fine with you eating. That's the problem with manners, they kill social connections and turn them into unstated rules.

The spaghetti would be cold from the A/C.
you should wait until the foodless person invites you to start your meal. Just digging in without a word is barbaric
I love how every time he goes on a rant the dumbest angriest chatters come out of the woodwork
It’s okay to eat before someone, BUT you have to offer a fry
For me it depends if the other person is a fast or slow eater
The 2 first times i had A&W there was hair in it but i keep goin back
like the cioppino, that was sublime
I do the exact same thing with hair. I feel so seen. Representation matters
very true good point lol
Its funny, fancy restaurants pride themselves with bringing out all the food out at the same time.
"Hmmmm I never get this flavour of ice cream. Let me try it. Nevermind, my usual flavour is better." -2!!!
As a host at a restaurant i have had parents meeting their daughter and son-in-law come 5 minutes early and hand me their card before the rest of the party got there so that they could be the ones to pay for lunch.
0:37 this mans CRACKED
Eggman was on fire here. Agreed with every single take.
The prison fit goes hard
I was mostly listening and not watching and was so confused to see FEED GRANPA BLOOD.
If you can do something small to let people around you know they’re respected and love, why wouldn’t you?
The insist rule is such good advice.
as a southern homeschooler, i've never even heard of the no one eats till everything is out rule, i used to work in a resturaunt and we always timed our food so everything went to a table all at once but i've never gotten a situation where me or someone else threw a tantrum because someone ate before everyone else, it's wild that people actually -2 NL for such a reasonable stance
What if I don’t wanna eat my food first, because I wanna eat it with you?
then insist that you want to wait
Almost word for word a Larry David bit
Idk i think it's weird to masticate in front of others if they ain't doing it back.
If I get my food I'm eating it, I went to eat cuz im fuckin hungry, im eating. That disturbs you enough to leave, good, I'll pay the bill and eat what you ordered
I asked my grandpa why he have manners and he said "No one knows, we forgot"
Politeness at dinner means a few things, but seriously eat it while it’s hot bucko.
He's so right
2:25 rocket raccoon
bro is telling curb episodes at this point lol
It’s not necessarily about manners. It’s about sharing the experience. It’s weird if one person is sitting there while everyone else at the table eats.
good rant
That whole eating manners dabacle must be an American thing. Like it exists here in europe but no one is going to go crazy if you start digging in first.
See this is one of those things where I wouldn’t do the same as NL, but I respect his opinion. I think I just default to not eating because I assume other people wouldn’t eat.
If I knew everyone felt the way NL does, I would have no problem eating
Edit: he’s very based about the hair take though
I think it isn't rude to eat first, but it is a kind gesture to wait.
It's signals that you value their company more than the food, or something like that. But it should be seen as "going above and beyond" rather than the expected default.
You know you can just ask others at the table if they're fine with you eating. That's the problem with manners, they kill social connections and turn them into unstated rules.
