I find this generational gap around something like table manners, of all things, to be ginormously petty but also interesting to see that rift between older and younger people. My parents, for example, they were pretty old school about this sort of stuff; Only eat when everyone has their food, you must hold the fork in a specific way in your left hand and the knife in the other hand regardless if you may be left handed or not, you need to place them down while dressing the table in specific ways, yadda yadda etc. etc. Meanwhile, a friend of mine was brought up a little more loosely when it came to that, to a dogma that essentially was "just don't be gross by throwing or vomiting across everyone on the table and you'll be fine", and when we've had meals at restaurants together we had our meals essentially the same way as one another. I personally do not care a iota if someone starts to eat before I did, I don't want to make anyone stare at their plate at a restaurant watching their food get cold because I haven't gotten mine yet. If anything, I prefer it because seeing them enjoy theirs would only hype me up more for mine, I truly see no point in waiting.

The only reason "waiting for everyone to get their food before eating" ever became a thing surely must've been because it maximizes time available to talk. If the people start eating at different times there'll always be at least one person unable to talk due to being preoccupied with consuming food.
That being said, I don't give a shit. I'm not afraid of some silence, as long as everyone else feels the same way ofc.

NL's ice cream rule is sort of interesting, but it disincentivizes being curious. Even flavor-curious customers that know deep down they might not like what they sample, so they're gonna sample a safe choice, then use they're other two samples to try new stuff. The rate of unnecessary sampling might go down or go up, it depends.

I personally don't eat until others have their food, not because I think it's polite, but because I feel it's kinda awkward sometimes. Usually I am mid conversation when I get my food and so theres no need to stop my line of thought just to eat before others. tipping as well. When I was a kid, tipping was (supposed to be) as a reward for excellent service, but as I grew up it became good manners to tip because the minimum wage earner relies on it and they can't control 90% of the things that we tend to think of as "good service" in the first place (food quality/temperature/timing, having enough time to share between the tables they're assigned, etc). I agree, the difference in wait time is so far apart in cafés and restaurants. Someone's spaghetti comes first, they eat first, because the next baked cheese rice set comes out in another ten - fifteen minutes. The spaghetti would be cold from the A/C.

He's right about the ice cream btw, and if anyone is pressed about it, just realize if you take 2 samples and you don't like either, you just go with the usual instead of risking a 3rd bad sample. It's as simple as that.

I don't have very strong feelings about this one way or the other really, but if I get my food first I am waiting until others get their food. If he insisted I ate then I would take like one bite and then wait.

as a southern homeschooler, i've never even heard of the no one eats till everything is out rule, i used to work in a resturaunt and we always timed our food so everything went to a table all at once but i've never gotten a situation where me or someone else threw a tantrum because someone ate before everyone else, it's wild that people actually -2 NL for such a reasonable stance

See this is one of those things where I wouldn’t do the same as NL, but I respect his opinion. I think I just default to not eating because I assume other people wouldn’t eat.
If I knew everyone felt the way NL does, I would have no problem eating
Edit: he’s very based about the hair take though

I think it isn't rude to eat first, but it is a kind gesture to wait.
It's signals that you value their company more than the food, or something like that. But it should be seen as "going above and beyond" rather than the expected default.

    • @dreambuffer

You know you can just ask others at the table if they're fine with you eating. That's the problem with manners, they kill social connections and turn them into unstated rules.
