Man, what a helpful video! You guys are constantly such an invaluable resource. Got me into sign carving and now I’m hoping to really build a business out of it! Sold my first sign the other day and I want more! Keep up the great work, gentlemen!
Now that you explained how you charge for the extras it all makes sense how you can make money carving signs. You mentioned some things I never thought of. Excellent informative video. Looking forward to more like this on how to price your work.
Great video and information. I definitely need to readjust my pricing as I am pretty much giving away a quality item. Have never had anyone bawk at my pricing but after watching this I see I am leaving some dollars on the table that should be going into the pocket instead.
Great video guys. If you are shipping to another area, try as best you can to determine what the going market price is for a similar product in that area. What I can get in the rural Texas Gulf Coast vs. what the Houston or Dallas areas can fetch are vastly different markets. So do your research before you give a price.
a GREAT VIDEO. very helpful and informative. i have done a few signs for customers for free , and it did pay off.thanks again for the video. always a pleasure watching you and Ryan.
Love your morning videos!! I always get to work early and have time to watch your new posted video. This is a great video! Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge.
I would love for Ryan to make a huge" I love California"sign for free please. And don't skimp on the paint when you lay out that beautiful flag in the back drop🤣🤣🤣
Can you share some of your philosophies pertaining to your business id love to hear your mindsets maybe we can include some of your mindsets as you do business thanks again
Hey David, I'm not quite sure what you mean as far as philosophy and mindset. The best way I can think to answer that is we give the customer the best possible product we can at a good price and still make a profit.
I suggest a 100% deposit. That's time and cost for material you won't get back. There are times where I'll only do 50% but that's for a really big order. If you only get a small deposit, definitely make it non refundable.
I try to stay around 35 to $40 a square foot but the problem that I run into is People think I'm too expensive I love my work and think it's great but I think I'm too expensive but by the time you factor in Paints materials and time that's not a bad price or is it too expensive?
Howdy Sign Dudes... This video is kinda ironic as I was binge watching yalls videos the other day while I was carving a Longhorn Skull....and one of the videos I actually stopped working to watch and listen too was a video from 10 years ago and yalls prices were $30 - $50 a square foot. Inflation I guess. Hahahaha.
I remember a previous video where they mentioned $1 per square inch which would be $144 per square foot. So, that video was really close to what they are currently charging. So, a 2 foot long piece of fencing cedar would be right at that 1 square foot price.
Ok, no problem. Here's a video on the router modification studio.ua-cam.com/users/videoYiHgCVgB7zU/edit And here's the website to order the base plate you need makeawoodsign.com
Sounds like you guys take advantage of people on your prices. Can't believe people will pay for your signs... oh well good job at it if you can get it.
That's an interesting insight. How exactly are we taking advantage of people? We give them a price and if they agree to it, then we give them a top notch product. They know exactly what it will cost them before we ever start carving. It's up to them if they want to pay that price or not.

That's awesome, man!! Congrats on selling your first sign! We really appreciate the kind words, buddy!
Most people hesitate to talk money. Great job guys!
Thanks, buddy! We like to try to hit all different angles of business/woodworking.
Now that you explained how you charge for the extras it all makes sense how you can make money carving signs. You mentioned some things I never thought of. Excellent informative video. Looking forward to more like this on how to price your work.
Thank you, Ron! We'll definitely be doing more of these types of videos
Never be shy about your price and your work i had to learn this when I was younger. Good video guys 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely!
This is really great. Liked when you showed a sign and told what the total price would be. Really helps put it in perspective.
Glad it was helpful, buddy!
Great video and information. I definitely need to readjust my pricing as I am pretty much giving away a quality item. Have never had anyone bawk at my pricing but after watching this I see I am leaving some dollars on the table that should be going into the pocket instead.
Giving people a good value for a good product is one thing, but giving your work and skill away is a whole other ballgame.

Great point, Frank!

Our pleasure, Gayle! You're doing some awesome stuff!
Always helpful information. Thanks, guys.
Thanks, Susan!
Thank you great advice
Our pleasure, Pam!
Great video. I have been doing custom signs but I think I am way under changing them. 1x10x30 inches I have been changing $60 but it for Freind
Ya, man. That's pretty cheap. If it's for a friend then that's cool. But for the general public, I'd raise your prices a bit
good job guys
Thanks, Mark!
Sound advice 👌
Thanks buddy!
fair and honest
yup👍👍
Great video, should help a lot
Thanks Randolph! Glad it was helpful!
I would love for Ryan to make a huge" I love California"sign for free please. And don't skimp on the paint when you lay out that beautiful flag in the back drop🤣🤣🤣
😂😂 It would take a very large sum of money to get me to make that sign!!😂😂😂
Hi you guys I appreciate this video. Maybe you can create a check list as a guide to follow to help stay on track what you think thanks
That's a good idea. We'll see if we can come up with something like that soon.
Thank you so much
Thank you for watching and the nice feedback.
@@oldave100 You are welcome 😊
I always struggle with pricing. I raised my square foot price, (when I started using Halcyon) I did start to charge extra for color.
It can definitely be tricky. You gotta charge more for color. If you're doing more work, you should get paid more.
Can you share some of your philosophies pertaining to your business id love to hear your mindsets maybe we can include some of your mindsets as you do business thanks again

So helpful even if I have to convert to Kiwi Dollars. Thanks guys 👍
Our pleasure!👍👍

Gracias, amigo!
Do you suggest a deposit, and if so, how much? Do you make that deposit non-refundable or can they get a refund before you begin the project?
I suggest a 100% deposit. That's time and cost for material you won't get back. There are times where I'll only do 50% but that's for a really big order. If you only get a small deposit, definitely make it non refundable.
I just made a 24x14x1" sign with 3 small graphics and 36 letters. I charged $100. Did I underprice? (All inset)
I would say that's a little underpriced. It depends on your demographic and where you're at, but a board the size I'd have charged at least $150.
I try to stay around 35 to $40 a square foot but the problem that I run into is People think I'm too expensive I love my work and think it's great but I think I'm too expensive but by the time you factor in Paints materials and time that's not a bad price or is it too expensive?
I think that's a good price. Definetely not too expensive. But you gotta know your market. You might just be selling in the wrong places
This might sound ridiculous eric lol but how fo you price up per squar foot?
Would you be able to give me a basic example if you could please so I can use it for myself if that's ok
I'm not sure what you mean.
Shoot me an email ryan@makeawoodsign.com
👍👍👍
Thanks, Pete!

I'm charging $1,000 per sign. This video let's me know why I haven't sold any 😉 😂😂😂
😂😂😂 Looks like you solved that riddle!
@@oldave100 Seriously though, pricing is a hard thing to nail down. Thanks for the video.
Special signs aka custom signs.
Yes sir! Guess we could've worded that better😂😂
Like the video. Sent eric and email the other day. Please check 🙂
Thanks, Michael! I'll have dad check. He's had several hundred emails in the past few days, so we're a tad backed up 😂😂
@@oldave100 I wanted to get a cordless Dewalt, plunge router and your base will it all work?
It won't work with a plunge base, but for what we do you don't really want a plunge router. At least that's our opinion
@@oldave100 ok, then I need a base for the cordless one, and instruction on how to cutout the base of the router please. Tyvm.
