@ProperHonestTech Hey Man - thank You !! Great info !! Not to mention I absolutely love your voice and your defiantly a very blessed man - 🔥 AF- man… love to information Fantastic !! & clear so are you man !
You should always eject drives on a PC as well. This ensures you are not removing a drive during a write process which could case corrupted data. Depending on what programs are accessing your drive you might not even be aware you're drive is being written to.
0:40 - Spotlight Search - Used to frustrate me as it wouldn't find files, which is what I usually want. Tip: Add the Option key and you get a Finder search - Cmd+Option+Space
Should also mention that Macs don’t actually need to be “shut down” every time you stop using them. Instead people should get used to putting their Mac to sleep and shutting down occasionally (every few weeks or when travelling). This was an eye opener for me when coming from Windows.
If it’s during the day, and I’m not using it for a few hours, I put it to sleep. I’m not using it for a period of time, say overnight, I turn the motherfucker off! Peace.
The main difference in Macs is that they usually wake up almost instantaneously, while with Windows you can go and make a coffee while everything restarts again 😅
Hiya , the music in the background thing is new, I was all over my mac looking for the rogue app. love your content, prefer it sans muzac! thanks for all the tips!
If you want to use the external drive on another non mac device, you should think about formatting as ExFAT. ExFAT drives can be both written and read in MacOS or Windows.
8:30 - another favorite tip for quitting apps is to use the "command" + "tab" interface. Hold "command", don't let go. Tap "tab" one or more times to cycle through your open apps (you can also just use the left/right arrow keys or even your mouse to pick the app you want). Then press "Q" to quit that app (works on iPad as well).
Great video! There seems to be a myth going around that only Macs require you to eject an external drive before physically removing it. It’s the same principle for pretty much everu operating system. Windows will complain if you don’t ”safely remove hardware” before de attaching it. The reason is that the operating system can speed up read and write speeds to USB devices by using r/w cache which stores data in the computers primary memory and there’s a very tiny risk that there are data in memory not yet written to the external drive, however these problems were more common back in the days of USB version 1.
Correct. A modern OS should be smart enough to know if there are files at risk and instead of showing the same eject warning just inform you about what files may be corrupted, and only if that’s the case.
Another great video, mate. I really appreciate your efficient presentation style, which doesn't rely on a lot of click-baity titles, jargon, filler, graphics, or unnecessary transitions. I look forward to more of your content.
Please be aware uninstalling a app by moving it to the bin will not uninstall any other files related to that app that are installed in various system folders. If your application has its own dedicated uninstall program I suggest you use that, over the years your system will become cluttered with useless files and in certain circumstances can cause conflicts and errors.
Yes, just remove the app package, will usually leave its other folders scattered all over inside various system places. I recommend using application cleaners (search and you will find free ones that are not actually bloated with other stuff and not free).
@@01Lic I usually use spotlight search with hidden directories visible and keyword the software to find all leftover traces of it, I wish Apple would make this easier.
Great video, thank you. One other thing I found really confusing as a Windows user is the maximise window functionality on a Mac. It creates a new virtual desktop for the application window when you do that. You can then use the Ctl+arrow key to move between them. Until recently I didn't even know that virtual desktops even existed, but once you realise what is happening and how to use them, they are really great.
PHT is the best! Highly useful practical advice for anyone using Apple products. Great presentation and one I share with my Apple friends. Thanks PHT!!
With the intro of the MAC Studio, many users are opting for non Apple monitors to avoid the cost of the Studio Display. I purchased a Samsung M8 and am very happy with my choice, especially the $1000 I saved. My one complaint is the inability to control the volume of the display using the keyboard. I don't care about changing the brightness since I've calibrated the monitor and use it for my photography. But the volume is another issue. I've tried a few workarounds and am not happy with any of the solutions I've found. Can you give us some pointers on how to solve this issue? Thanks in advance. Enjoy your channel.
I’m really enjoying your videos. Even though I haven’t bit the bullet & laid out the cash for a Mac computer, I’m using 2 ipads & an iphone. I plan on getting an M(whatever) Mac Mini the next time they update it so your videos are so helpful. You have such a great organized delivery of information I’m sure I’ll be rewatching in the future. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thank you for this excellent presentation. One can also eject a drive by dragging the drive icon from the desktop to the bin in the bottom right corner of the dock.

To access the iPhone hotspot you don't need to "Allow others to join" or remember the password. Hi. Thanks for the helpful tips. I have never quite got my head around Time Machine, though I use it. You referred to the oldest backup being overwritten when the storage disk is reaching its limit. Is there some warning that this is about to happen. And if I delete a file from my working hard drive does Time Machine automatically delete that file from the backup? Any other pitfalls associated with using Time Machine? Many thanks.
There’s a step I like to try before force quit. When Cmd-Q won’t work, you can use the Activity Monitor to send a message or signal to tell the app to quit. (I assume this is similar to Cntl-C from the terminal.) Anyway sometimes it works when cmd-Q doesn’t and I assume it’s less likely to cause problems than a force quit.
Brilliant. Thankyou. Covering the basics is great as a new MacBook Air user. When I use airdrop to transfer a photo from my phone to my MacBook the word document I have open disappears and photos file appears on the screen. Is there an easy way to get it up again? Rather than finder and word please?
That principle applies to so many similar things. We have screens the size of tennis courts, yet arrows, buttons, etc are like trying to stab a mosquito with a pin. Especially if you are geriatric, like me.
It’s worth noting that some apps still require an uninstaller, and only hard disks are affected by not ejecting first (since they have moving parts) if you’re not actively in the middle of a copy or something.
Love your videos, and your wallpaper set, which I bought. One thing I feel strongly about is that the #1 productivity tool for the Mac, Keyboard Maestro, is being ignored, and this should change. It’s a macro tool that lets you do *anything* related to automation, from running scripts to performing Applescript or Javascript, advanced UI scripting, you name it. I’d love to see you crack this tool, if you aren’t familiar with it, and work up a video about how it can help make the Mac better for users. I’d be happy to help if you like.
Great stuff PHT, thank you. first time on a mac, i downloaded chrome and other items...everything just sits on the desktop,...how do i get rid of all the downloaded icons from the desktop.

Thank you so much for this tip on the screenshot app in the Utility folder. I dragged it to my desktop for easy access so I can just either click with my mouse or from the touchpad. Easier than using shortcut keys. So appreciate it!
The hotspot thing is useful .... but it works very poorly. Once iphone locks itself, goes your connection too, goes same with cable or wifi. You can also plug a cable in to your mac to use it as modem. Any way around connection going away after mac is locked?
@@gbsailing9436 no, i think i clicked on trust this computer once. Try it, somewhere in Starbucks, connect the hotspot or cable in to thunderbolt port and see what happens when phone get's locked. Thank you for it.
Ok, so in formatting external drives, I have the need to use my drives with both Mac and Windows machines and occasionally, the files sizes I am required to use are large. What would you advise to format in that situation?
I think you under value Time Machine. It’s extremely useful to recover a deleted file, and when you buy a new Mac Time Machine can be used to transfer files, settings, etc.
First of all praise for the channel that I watch regularly. I recently got an iMac 4k 2019, everything is OK except for HD which runs at 5400. You do have to eject your usb drive before removing it to ensure no corruption on pc just as on a mac , otherwise you risk pulling it out in the middle of a write . If such is the case your pc or mac , will warn you as you hit the eject symbol !
I remember having trouble with my watch unlocking my M1 Air - I had to toggle the settings a few times, made sure everything was fully up to date, on the same network, iCloud account etc, and then it sorted itself out. Bit of a pain, I know!

As he described, clicking the yellow button on the upper left simply minimizes the app to the dock. But then, clicking the red X does the same thing. Why? Kinda silly to have them do the same thing.
They don't do the same thing, that's what I mentioned in the video. The yellow minimises the still-open window to the dock. Red closes the window - it's gone. But the application itself remains open.
@@ChrisW228 Not true. The yellow button minimises the window. It's there, at the bottom, and you can get that EXACT window back if you need it (browsing a particular web page for example, but want to quickly go and do something else). If you press the red button, the window is closed. So, if you want to pick up where you left off, you have to open a new window, browse back to the website, find your place... there's quite a big difference between the two functions.

@@gbsailing9436 no, i think i clicked on trust this computer once. Try it, somewhere in Starbucks, connect the hotspot or cable in to thunderbolt port and see what happens when phone get's locked. I had to get something done once outside of home, and it was really annoying. I tried searching online, appears im not the only one like this. Nothing wrong with work your doing, it's great! Thank you for it.
spotlight searching not searching among local apps, instead gives wikipedia results. how to fix?
Ok, so in formatting external drives, I have the need to use my drives with both Mac and Windows machines and occasionally, the files sizes I am required to use are large. What would you advise to format in that situation?
Belive it or not, i have a MacBook but not an iPhone. You can also use any Smartphone as an WiFi Hotspot.
I think you under value Time Machine. It’s extremely useful to recover a deleted file, and when you buy a new Mac Time Machine can be used to transfer files, settings, etc.
Excellent content and so easy to follow, thanks!
10::56 Uninstalling Apps: Can we remove Macos's own application? Is it possible?
Thanks for the video. I think I have been watching the Office way too much. I can't help imagining Ryan Howard is making this video.
So long as I can be Ryan during his 'New York Executive' era, and not his 'disgraced receptionist' era 😂
@@ProperHonestTech Wunderkind
you have to do on PCs as well
Excellent video. Thank you.
First of all praise for the channel that I watch regularly.
I recently got an iMac 4k 2019, everything is OK except for HD which runs at 5400.
On this occasion, I would like to ask you the following:
can I install ios on an external ssd and start the system that way?
maybe a video on this topic in the future :) thanks in advance
Why not take it apart and swap the hdd for a shiny new ssd, it’s really easy to do
0:20+ “Things you’ll need to do .. that you’ll only know about if someone shows you”. And there in a nutshell you have the Apple philosophy - keep ‘em ignorant, so our Apple Genius stores prosper 🙄
Superb, thank you!
thank you so much
Griselda? Respect
You do have to eject your usb drive before removing it to ensure no corruption on pc just as on a mac , otherwise you risk pulling it out in the middle of a write . If such is the case your pc or mac , will warn you as you hit the eject symbol !
you got me at rooter :)
Bought the watch and new MBPro won’t or can’t detect for opening…any vids on that?
@@gbsailing9436 yes exactly - it says cannot connect - did some google searches and tried everything, still unable to get them to see each other
I remember having trouble with my watch unlocking my M1 Air - I had to toggle the settings a few times, made sure everything was fully up to date, on the same network, iCloud account etc, and then it sorted itself out. Bit of a pain, I know!
Wow cool, I switched from Windows a lot of things I didn't know
Well done!
Nerd! All solid advice here, although some applications are a little more tricky to remove.
m8 got my hands on a 17" macbook from 2011 with NO fried gpu , 1TB ssd , 17 charge cycles , 16gm ram ,runs 10.7.3 . So what i do ? , make it run monterey !
Great Video! Though this video definitely gear towards new Mac Owner, which should be included into the title. None the less keep up the good work.
Right click? How do you do that? I right click and none of stuff you mention happens.
@@ProperHonestTech I don’t understand why both are needed. In both cases, the window is gone, but the app is still open.
@@ProperHonestTech Thank you. That was the piece I was missing… holding your place and not restarting the app.
Eject, has a ^ icon next tot he drive name, in finder les kliks in any method you showed! love the content tho
He said on pc u don't need to eject external storage but last I check on pc u still need to eject so what is he talking about?
4:42 nope, you have to eject on pcs too !!!!
5:25 you forgot Command+E ;-)
yes you need to eject drive on windows also
