It is a cool option. My room is treated and when I did it according to the recommendations it kicked the bass up way to much for my tastes. But what a cool thing for vintage. As always, thanks for your support Jim.
Someone said on another review of the WiiM that androids will not have room correction available since there are way too many kinds of microphones in them. Maybe one day. But too hard with some many kinds.
They could just pick a couple basic mics from Amazon or wherever and at least give you that option, I have a fairly new iPhone but I’d try it with a $50 or less mic if I have the option
Great explanation Ed. I've played around with it on my Wiim Pro Plus and Android platform. I need to learn a lot more about it though. Seems to apply way too much bass and sounds muddy after it runs Room EQ. I do have s couple crazy bass room issues so i can't totally blame the Wiim! Lol

Is it best practice to set the EQ within your Wiim to flat and zero out your tone controls on the amp before using the room correction, then adjust as needed after?
Wouldn’t you have to rerun the equalizer settings after playing with the tone controls or am I missing something? Btw I enjoy your channel and your relaxed approach to reviews. I wish you continued success!
@@OldGuyHifi I did a research and found help in WiiM forum. it is absolut possible to use the WiiM´s room correction for all connected part. Don't use the "source direct" button whenever you have set the rec selctor to anything but "off", as "source direct" will disable the tape outputs. Case 1, streaming sources to speakers Enable speakers 1. Play something on the WiiM and press the "tape 2" button. The position of the input selector on the Marantz shouldn't matter. Set the rec selector to "off", so the WiiM Pro Plus doesn't try to auto-sense what's fed into it's line input. Case 2, Dual turntable directly to speakers (no EQ) Enable speakers 1. Set the input selector to "phono" (as before) and do not push any of the two tape buttons. The position of the rec selector doesn't really matter, but setting it to "off" will ensure that no output is sent to either the headphone amp or the Pro Plus. Case 3, Dual turntable to speakers with WiiM EQ Enable speakers 1. Leave the input selector in the "phono" position, but set the rec selector to "source" and press the tape 2 button. On your WiiM Pro Plus select the line-input if auto-sense doesn't do so anyway. Case 4, streaming sources to headphones Disable speakers 1 and 2. Play your streaming content on the Pro Plus and set the rec selector to "2->1 tape copy". This will direct the WiiM's line output (connected to tape 2 in) to tape 1 out. The position of the source selector doesn't matter. Caveat: If you have applied the WiiM room correction for use with your speakers you will have to disable it manually on the Pro Plus. Case 5, Dual turntable to headphones (no EQ) Disable speakers 1 and 2. Set the source selector to "phono" and the rec selector to "source", justs as before. The phono signal will also be send to the WiiM's line input, so it may wake up from standby if you have auto-sensing enable for the line input. Case 6, Dual turntable to headphones with WiiM EQ Disable speakers 1 and 2. Set the source selector to "phono". As mentioned before, the phono signal will be send to the WiiM's line in. Select the line-input if auto-sensing doesn't do it. The WiiM Pro Plus output is fed into "tape 2 in", so again set the rec selector to "2->1 tape copy" to direct this signal to your headphone amp.
Did you have the WiiM just plugged in as a regular AUX input? I have a theory that you could do some cool stuff by using it in a tape-loop, since the WiiM Pro and Pro Plus both have inputs and outputs. You could have remote volume control for everything your integrated has plugged into it. Just set your receiver or integrated to the max volume you want.
Justin, I know what you are thinking and I had the same thought but, it wouldn't work. The issue is that the WiiM won't work like an EQ in the tape loop because it can't output to it's self. The input side needs to be connected to an outboard device and then you choose that input in the WiiM app and then you have to choose an output. Watch my latest video. The WiiM digitizes the analog input and then re-converts it back to analog for output. You know what, I may try that. Logically, I don't think it would work. I will let you know. Thank you.
@@OldGuyHifi My thinking is: TAPE OUT to WiiM's line-in. WiiM's line-out to the TAPE IN on the integrated/receiver. Any input (except for whatever TAPE IN the WiiM is on) will be sent to the WiiM input. You use the TAPE MONITOR button to hear anything coming in from the WiiM (never select the TAPE IN the WiiM is on, or FEEDBACK!). The notion comes from the outboard EQs that added auxiliary inputs to fill in for the tape-loop they occupied. The WiiM's streaming output could be chosen on the WiiM and would go direct to the TAPE IN as would the DAC output if you're also using the WiiM as a DAC.
Justin, I totally understand your thought. I will try it but, because of the clunky input/output selections it may fail. I will keep you posted. I will mess with it later today. Thx.
I don't stream music but I think room correction would be very helpful if I could play CDs and LPs through the Wiim. Was that the DACs purpose, Ed? And for the playlist, I'm almost certain I don't have to mention Vangelis or Jean Michele Jarre but there you have it. 😊
You can run a CD player and/or turntable into the unit via it's analog inputs & analog output. Or if your CD player has a digital out you could run that into the WiiM, although the internal DAC is not so good. Honestly Fred, we have got to get you streaming!! I know, I know. Of course Vangelis, Jean Michele and Giorgio Moroder. Also Tangerine Dream.
What is the difference between room correction and a custom tailored EQ for your room. To me, this is what the WiiM is doing, sending out a signal and measuring it to the curve you want and adjusting the EQ to try to match the curve.
Yes. That's what their room correction scheme does. just EQing. Unless it is a true DSP based correction which can account for timing issues etc., then it just an EQ curve. It is after all just a $120 unit with a nice gimmick.
great video. not sure if you aware, room correction doesnt exist for Android right now and only iPhone/iPad (most likely due ot mic variety on android)
Cool ... my cat jumped and ran off when the high pitched tone for the room correction sweep played. I have an iphone that will work with the WiiM Pro, will I also need wi-fi in order for this to work?
What do your ears say to the applied room correction? Would love to see you compare room correction of vintage gear to the WiiM pro. Like a Sansui SE-9 which i believe was the first equalizer that had an earlyv1980ish processor and could move the analog controls automatically.
Robert, It worked ok. I have a Schiit Lokius EQ which I use to just tweak ever so slightly the sound. The Wiim added way too much bass. My room is partially treated to begin with so I really don't have any bass issues. That's where I think the room correction could help is in the bass. That said, I trust my ear more that some device. Maybe I am old school? Who am I kidding? I am old school! I vaguely remember that Sansui unit but, have no hands on with it. Thanks for being a channel member and sharing your experience. I do appreciate it.
@@OldGuyHifi I felt the same way at first but I realized I am used to equalizing my speakers towards the brighter side giving me a false sense of detail while missing a lot of musical information in the mids and bass region. I was not used to having a flatter response curve so it sounded muddy at first when I could hear the mids in detail. After some time I prefer the rc mix, I found I was missing a lot of detail in drums and stringed instruments, having the bass slightly boosted gave me a bit more of a feel from the music. (one thing to note: I ran the room correction a few times with varying results) The best corrections were made when I calibrated at a volume slightly louder than I would listen too. The first attempt sounded like someone threw a wet blanket over my speakers.
@@TheKelzman I do use a very little bit of EQ on occasion to compensate for all the different gear I have through here. Just to try and achieve a bit of balance. Great comment. Thanks so much.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that. I don't use a WiiM device. I had this one in just for the review. Sorry. Part of me thinks it should since your mobile device is controlling the WiiM and the WiiM is outputting the signal. If you try it let me know what happens. Thx.
My question is… does Wiim and other DSP hardware have to do ADAC then DAC back to analog when using an analog source? If so is this process considered lossless? I understand if you start with a digital source then the eq occurs in the digital domain entirely and therefore is lossless (unless gain is too high and causes distortion). Anyways! 😉 Thanks for your review I subscribe to other hifi channels as well and I really think you bring a valuable perspective. I really look forward to hearing about that cheap op “ampable” DAC and how it compares to other options in its price range.
Michael, Form everything I can find, Yes it does an A2D than a D2A conversion on the analog inputs. My source for this info is: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/wiim-pro-review-measurements-streamer.42300/. They discuss the A2D performance. I will test it and see. I suspect that all the WiiM units do it as you can apply EQ to any of the inputs. Great question. I may do another video on the unit shortly. Thanks.
@@OldGuyHifi Thanks I didn’t know that ASR did a review on that. It looks like it’s not a very good ADAC according to them. The recommended use case for the Wiim is digital transport and it seems like it does a pretty good job of that. Looking forward to your next video sir!
That's why you see me using an outboard DAC. The good news is that the A2D seems to be ok. Watch my next video in the morning it addresses all of this. Thx.
Yes. That's the whole idea behind it. You don't want to use the internal DAC unless you don't have a choice. The room correction is just an EQ curve. It can't fix timing, phase or spatial issues. Thank you for tuning in.
Wauw...no Android on a new product in 2024??? That's just hillarius....so let me get this right...I buy a product known for being very good at a cheap price.....BUT I have to buy into the most expensive eco system to use it!! That's just dropping the ball in a massive way🤭🤭 Nice video though🤘
I agree but, knowing WiiM they may figure something out. One of my viewers said it might be be because Apple controls all the internal hardware, i.e., mics etc., and Android is run on a million different devices from a million different manufacturers, that the mics may all be very different and/or substandard. Kind of makes sense. Great comment Claus. Thank you so much.
If you run this through a Geshelli J3 is there a noticeable difference between wiim and the likes of eversolo or any other streamer? I just don't know how one can justify the price hike. I am relatively new to hifi and don't mind spending money but there has to be a compelling reason. I love your videos and your breakdowns btw.
The issue with WiiM is that it is built to a price point and not for audio performance. Think of it this way: if you listen to music on an AM radio the station is playing a digital file CD, FLAC whatever, so the music is fine it is the delivery medium, AM, that degrades the sonic performance. Streamers are the same. Networks are very noisey and the are loads of timing issues in all data whether it is on CAT cable or wireless. A well designed streamer can reclockand and dejitter the signal so the internal and/or external DAC had a clean signal to decode. I did a review of the Eversolo and found that for less money the Cambridge MXN10 out performed as a streamer for sound quality and having a simpler and more robust software package. Eversolo has lots of fancy features that after 10 minutes serve no real purpose and don't contribute to the sound quality. I hope that helps answer your question. Thx for watching and asking.
@OldGuyHifi thank you, so when looking for a good streamer that pairs with the rest of my set up I really need to dig into the details more. I really appreciate your break downs. Folks like you help us newbies understand the audiophile jargon that is meant to confuse us sometimes.

Wonder if there is a way you could feasibly route your turntable through this.... no ground on the pro i see, and I suppose, unfortunately, you would be digitizing your analog signal from the record.
Yes. You would need an outboard phono pre anyway. It would digitize the analog in and then convert it back to analog on the output or keep it digital to an outboard DAC. Thx. Good question.
Can someone confirm that this also works with a subwoofer? I'm deciding between svs sb 1000 and 1000 pro's, which have an app for the settings and are a lot more expensive
@OldGuyHifi looks like it's already capable of doing it since October: "What's New? Broader Frequency Range: Expand the default 40Hz~4KHz frequency range to an impressive 30Hz~20kHz, enhancing both bass and high frequencies." Working on "Integrating independent PEQ Room Correction with subwoofer, enabling automatic level matching between the main speakers and the subwoofer." 👍👍👍

For any of the streaming services like Tidal or Spotify; yes you will need Wi-Fi. You also need Wi-Fi to have our iPhone talk to the WiiM.
Lol your system is very close to mine
Camb AXR100
Polk R700 towers
Schiit Modius DAC
Just picked up the iFi iDSD finale, the adorama exclusive version. $299 😁 looking forward to seeing if it can best the Modius.
Haven't used the built-in DAC with the AXR100, any option on it?
Those Polks are great. I just got the Wharfedale Diamond 12.4s. I love me some Wharfies and my AXR100!. Thanks for stopping by.
@@OldGuyHifi I feel like the AXR100 supplies plenty of power I have the AXR85 Too... both great but the 100 doesn't get as hot (work as hard)
@@ChiefExecutiveOrbiter It is very powerful. More that they advertise. I have that on good authority from the inside. I love mine very much.
Do you know if EQ is still applied when using Tidal Connect - so directly from Tidal app?
Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that. I don't use a WiiM device. I had this one in just for the review. Sorry. Part of me thinks it should since your mobile device is controlling the WiiM and the WiiM is outputting the signal. If you try it let me know what happens. Thx.
Great Ed. Is there a way to use the wiim pro as s preamp to control and room correct all inputs including phono? Thanks
I think so. The analog in appears to be converted to digital and then back again. I am still researching it.
@@OldGuyHifi Ed. Plugged my phono preamp out into the wiim line in. It worked but the fidelity is bad. A no go except for streaming IMO
I have a new video coming out in the morning that address all of that stuff.
Thx.
Does Wiim's digital out work with room correction?
That's just dropping the ball in a massive way🤭🤭
Nice video though🤘
@@MrMickey5751 For what is worth my personal favorite under $1k streamer is on sale at $100 off. The MXN10 from Cambridge. Here is an early Black Friday link and they are available at that price right now. amzn.to/3YM0H3z BTW, that is an affiliate link. It won't effect your price or ability to return it if you are not pleased with it. It does help support the channel. Let me know what you decide and please keep me posted on your thoughts if you get one. Thanks so much.
Did that room correction really output to an external dac?
Yes. It did.
@@OldGuyHifi nice! Now I can get one. Thanks!
Question... Can the EQ and RoomCorrection be used with a turntable or are we just talking streamed music? Thanks!
Any analog input. Watch my new video in the morning and it will answer your questions. Thanks.
@OldGuyHifi Oh yes ofcourse!! Now that I think about it more the signal would be way too low. I had my mind fixated on the ground wire!
Thanks again!!
Can someone confirm that this also works with a subwoofer? I'm deciding between svs sb 1000 and 1000 pro's, which have an app for the settings and are a lot more expensive
I heard that there was an update coming to correct that. You might check their user forums.
What if you don't have an I phone?
Apparently there is now an Android up date. Check the WiiM web site. Thx.
Every time I try room correction it sounds terrible. Flat and zero fun.
I think it is a bit of a gimmick. I did not have any success with it either.
I'm a little disappointed you are playing the UA-cam thumbnail game.
Don’t hate the player, hate the, algorithm?
In what way? I thought it was rather clever.
