Appreciate the super in depth review! My wife and I just built our new home and I had been debating what thermostat to go with for the longest time. Finally decided to pull the trigger and pick up two of these for our home. Was able to buy these directly from our electrical supplier and with instant rebates I got each Nest Thermostat for $4.99 a piece! No brainer!
Thanks for the detailed review. Unfortunately, doesn’t look like there’s too much additional functionality over the existing second GEN model. Consolidating to a single application is nice but not worth replacing a working unit.
I have a honeywell and when I go to Europe for the summer I can have it on 88 and even if outside is 79 it won't go down. Then when I put it up to 89 remotely, it goes down to 87. I hope this does a better job. Thanks Brett great review as usual
A note of caution to people who do not have a "set" schedule like me. If you work different days each week, or different hours each day, you may be disappointed with a "smart" thermostat, since it really can't learn or be programmed to keep up with your ever-changing schedule.. Great video, Brett. I'd love to see how you installed the C Wire.
i use a tado. which notices when i am around the house and if i am away or i disconnect from the home wifi, the device begins the geofencing program. Zero issues and monthly bill went down 3 years in a row. i work a irregular schedule which includes day and nights. love my tado
Bought mine last night when my old one took a dump and this thing is way more of a headache than it’s worth. I can’t adjust the temps like a normal thermostat and I can’t figure out how to manually do anything…. Lol. I’m done with it
I can always depend on you for help with new google products. You’re good at explaining and don’t talk fast like some of the others do. Some of us are technically challenged, LOL. Thanks for the video.
Yes. it would be great to watch you install the C wire as I also only have 4 wires and hence, I am hesitant to get one as I would need to install a C wire.
@@TechWithBrett i did not end up needing it. Your install was super easy. My wire is stapled in the wall and runs across the basement. In the basement, easy access, but no way to pull it down the wall. Staples are too tight. Hate when they put the staples holding wires too tight.
The Home/Away and presence sensing has been a great addition to Google Home. I am not sure why having a C wire would make the thermostat more stable though. All it does is allow the thermostat to draw power from the HVAC unit rather than relying totally on batteries and leakage current. Would be nice to see how you run your C Wire when you do it :)
@@Elfidinn yeah, but you lose the ability for the Nest to control fan then.... Mine is easy to run a new wire through though. Just pull a new multicore wire down. Luckily these wires only drive relays as such so they don't carry much current
A heads up. Google now sells a power adapter that adds the stability of a C wire without actually running a C wire. store.google.com/product/nest_power_connector?hl=en-US
Now is a great time to buy if you have a down payment saved. Interest rates are very low. On the flip side, prices are up and inventory is very low! My girlfriend and I are in the process of buying our first home. After 6 months of looking and seeing 23 houses, we finally found one and our offer was accepted. Good luck!
Actually considering it's such an easy install some places may allow you to swap the thermostat, as long as you reinstall the old one on your way out! Both I and a friend have been able to do this in our apartments. Check with the landlord! :)
A good device if you have the time, technical knowledge and luck to install it. I am a technical engineer but for me the Google nest is a waste of time and money. Google Nest? Never!!! Your explanation is great! Nice video.
I have this same nest thermostat. I wish you or someone would post a video on how to disable all the special features like eco, schedule, sleep, and comfort so I can use like a regular thermostat. The other UA-cam videos don’t use this exact thermostat
Is there any way I can remove any schedule and just choose my temp throughout the day? Mine automatically goes to 75.° which I don’t want it to go below 80°.
Great video. I've passed the link to my son-in-law who was looking to see what this model did. Mine has the learning function, but honestly we ended up just setting the schedules manually anyway.
Another great video! I also have two of the 2nd Gen Nest Thermostats. I like the features of this one, but I'm really curious about that C-Wire issue. Why would this one need the C-Wire when the 2nd Gen didn't and things like motion sensing worked fine? I'd love more info on that and yes, I'd love to see the video of how you installed the C-Wire. Thanks again!
Check your furnace and thermostat, you might already have an extra wire for the C-wire but it's just not hooked up... My wiring has an extra wire that is not hooked up to anything because my old manual thermostat doesn't need it.
As a tech repairing these, they fail more than other thermostats, but it has a great marketing department. Los Angeles DWP put a lot in and failures are reaching havoc on the program.
At 7:40, my Samsung S9 would just say "Connecting" and go no further. Restarted everything 3 times, that I let the connecting continue for a long time each time. Contacted support thru chat, too late for phone support. They went thru everything with me a couple more times, even uninstalled and reinstalled the App. Then they asked if I had something else to use as device. There was a Samsung S8 in the house. Loaded it with the App and everything went great after that.
Very helpful and informative. TY. One detail I didn't hear mentioning is the screen display has a sensor to turn on when it feels a person nearby, very annoying every time I pass the screen lights up, any way to disable this?
Is there a way a temperature swing could be programmed into this or any other smart thermostat? Like I want the thermostat to start heating at 72 and stop heating when it reaches at 79. Then the heating stays off until the temperature inside falls to 72 again
we get a lot of black outs in our cabin 30 miles away: will this device help us know if the heat is off (so we can come prevent the pipes from freezing?)
I have a Nest Thermostat E and don't really see a huge difference functionality wise. Interface is mich nicer on this one, but I like the turn style dial better. Reminds me of the old turn style thermostats bit with a modern twist. Turn style is what made the circular design necessary, now they may as well offer a different shapes too.
In your final review, the issues you mentioned about the second gen thermostat learning a temp you didn’t want it to learn and then having to go into the app to delete it can be easily fixed by turning off the learning function and manually setting a schedule. That way you’d know what’s happening in the morning and afternoon and when you go to bed and have total control. Also, what’s interesting is the older Nest thermostats have fan control to run it separate from heating and cooling too, and can be done in the app and on the device itself, but the Google Hub doesn’t show that as an option like it does in this video. 🤔
Awesome Video Brett! One of the things i have always struggled with my Nest is the ability to do a manual override on the temperatures. Like if its too hot inside then i set it to 65. It will push through only till around 70 but never really work non stop till its 65 inside. Have you noticed this to be gone on the new one?
The design is good looking. Functionality is just worst than my old 14 years old Honeywell thermostat. Airwaves are not working - the feature that supposedly save energy by not running compressor. Once you decide to lower set temperature (cool mode), the compressor kicks in even before you finish working on the set temperature. Setting are very limited. I would go with Ecobee instead.
Great video, do you know how to keep the fan running constantly? I've read that you have to have it on heat or cool, in order to run the fan, or ther no fan only option. Thank you
Question, on schedules, if I set my temp at 18 at 6 am, would it stay 18 until the next instruction? And if so is it cheaper to do that than turn the heating off
was just given one of these thermostats. found I couldn't control it with a web browser. works very well with google home speaker, google home app, but trying to control thermostat with a web browser on my mac doesn't work.
Thank for the video. I only have one question which I saw on the video it can. I don’t care about other features but can it really be setup to cool-heat auto mode. I just want to setup one temp and leave it. I want my house to be in one temperature the whole time. Like if it need cooling it will cool automatically or if it need heating it will heat automatically.
Brett thank you for this video. I already followed. I do just want to point out that right in the beginning you read the box and incorrectly(?) call it the Nest Learning Thermostat when in fact it is not the Learning thermostat, the box just says it is “The Nest Thermostat.” Not learning. I just think this is an important clarification. Am I wrong? 😬 Thanks!
I just bought this thermostat. I watched the compatibility video prior to purchasing because it said my system was compatible. When I went to install it, the Google Home app said my system wasn’t compatible. I have 1 green wire, 1 white, 1 yellow, but 2 red wires. R and RC. What’s the problem. I have 24v, no wire nuts, no stranded wires. HELP
Wish it had a sensor if someone was nearby or not. Often on the top floor there's no one there but sometimes there is. Therefore it'll be hard to really have a good schedule.
Do I need 2 thermostats if i have 2 zones? I got in floor heating and it's divided into ground floor and first floor. It now has 2 separate thermostats.
Help. On approach wake up display not working. It is set up on the settings but will not show temp without tapping side. Any suggestions? Great videos. Thanks
Sorry if it's a stupid question but does this thermostat learn about the thermal inertia of the house like other models nest? For example if you ask him 75f at 7 in the morning, can he calculate (after a few days of learning, maybe) at what time it must start heating to reach the desired temperature at the desired time? EDIT: no it does not. So I'll go with a Nest Learning Thermostat (3d gen). I believe it's an important advantage for modern, well-insulated houses that consequently have a high inertia.
I’m looking for a good thermostat that allows me to turn it on and off manually. I will only be using it a few months out of the year. I need the smart phone option where I can turn on the AC before getting home. This seems too unpractical. Should I skip this item?
They'll save you energy, when your the 9 - 5 type kinda guy, so your not home 1/3 of the day, where the NEST learns that, and controls the heat/cooling when your not at home... otherwise they're not saving you anything over a regular thermostat
Will it control furnace blower ON/OFF? My humidifier is mist kind and requires heat and blower working together with humidifier. My humidifier also requires furnace blower to work a couple minutes after humidifier switches off automatically to distribute all the moisture collected in the duct. If blower stops the same time with mist humidifier moisture still will sit inside plenum and makes it rust. Will this Humidifier Control have this setting so furnace blower work few minutes after humidifier switched off??
So i have one Condenser unit outside with 2 Thermostats inside the house(upstairs & downstairs hallway). So to get a smart Thermostat. I need to get two nest Thermostats and synchronize them, right? Nice video, thumbs up!
Because the third gen does more then this. Supports more heating and cooling system configure rooms and more stages, etc. This device is just the updated version of the white plastic “economy” model with the frosted display from a few years ago.
How does the air filter reminder work can u set a certain time u want to change it or will it just come up when it gets full and say u need to change it
I thought it was a great idea until I tried installing it. I followed the instructions precisely but when I turned the power back on, the unit remained blank!
This likely might get lost in the hay stack but, google does not support anything other than coper solid wires. You CAN use silver or coper 'stranded wires'. It just needs to be super super clean. for a DIY'er you could try this. I would not attempt connecting stranded wires to solid coper if you are not 100% sure you know what you are are doing in regards to using a soldering system. In these cases, hire a pro/HVAC to work their magic. It's never a good idea to be liable for your own work if you are not designated.
Another great video. Thanks for the effort. And yes please show the C wire install. I'm curious though... with presence tracking, have you and your wife left for a night out leaving your kids with a babysitter and the thermostat turns off the heat or AC?
How can I remove the voice (Smart Speaker) feature from my Google Nest Learning thermostat? I do NOT want to command the thermostat by voice. But, I still want the app on my phone so I can control/monitor the temperature remotely.
We are using our nest thermostat at a cabin an hour away from our home. We want to turn up from home and have it warm when we get there. It will not turn off eco from home and heat up. It works fine when we do it manually at the cabin. Is it something in my app? so frustrated!!
Good review. I had a nest 1st gen, then we moved into a new house that came with a fancy Lennox tablet with WAY more useful settings for the furnace so unfortunately not using nest. These are the things my Lennox thermostat can do that I wish Nest would integrate; Half degree temp setting. - i ALWAYS use it. Half degree is noticeable. Fan speed control. - I can set the furnace's max fan speeds (fan only mode, cooling, heating). Humidity control. - Should be able to set this too. As in, what % of humidity goal to set the house at. HRV Ventilation. - I can set when my HRV turns on (for how long each hour), or manually on a timer. I can also set its fan speed as well. For sale; two Nest thermostats new in box. One Black, one stainless. lol
Do you know if this (or any other reasonably priced smart thermostat) can run the fan on regular intervals to equalize the temp between floors? Or if it can talk to a remote temp sensor on another floor?
Can I use the home app on my iPhone to add the nest thermostat? Or download the google home app? Is there any difference between those two apps? Thanks
I had the Nest E learning thermostat installed already I manually set it up for cooling it works fine with leaf, home/away, but I’ll need to copy for the heat settings. Can that be done in the home app instead of doing it manually on the device?
Great vid! At the ~16:30 mark, you show that you can select an End Time. On your phone it shows 11:39am, however I see no way to set end times in 1 minute increments. This is one of my biggest issues with this whole setup, because I'd like to schedule my AC to turn off 2 minutes before on-peak rates kick in, but see no way to get that granular. Thoughts?
Hey great video I have an elderly person in my home with alzheimers. He's constantly setting the heat to 98. Are there any lock outs that limit the range of manually settable Temps?
Great question. Do you currently have this thermostat? Looking at the settings there is no way to lock the Nest Thermostat. I saw that the Ecobee thermostat has a Pin Code lock option.
How do u reset it if your power or internet goes out will it just come back on when the internet comes back or to u haft to pull it off and scan the QR code again to reset it and if so do u haft to shut the power off so u don't get shocked when u unplug it?
It will still work. I did because I really like the motion sensing feature and it wouldn't be enabled without the C Wire. It will working, adding the C Wire just providers more consistent power.
@@TechWithBrett I agree. I just installed this thermostat at pulled a new thermostat cable to add the C wire. The motion sensor is my favorite feature so far.

Can it control a dehumidifier (set humidity percentage) and a fresh air ventilator/ERV/HRV?
Hi, was wondering if there is a way to change the brightness of the display on this model🤷🏻♂️
How do I program a seasonal setting @ 82 for May to July when our condo is unoccupied
Can you put a pin code lock on it?
Another great video. Thanks for the effort. And yes please show the C wire install. I'm curious though... with presence tracking, have you and your wife left for a night out leaving your kids with a babysitter and the thermostat turns off the heat or AC?
How can I remove the voice (Smart Speaker) feature from my Google Nest Learning thermostat? I do NOT want to command the thermostat by voice. But, I still want the app on my phone so I can control/monitor the temperature remotely.
I have a nest protect an ot also enabels home and away rutiner and it helps with my hue ligts turning it on and off when i am awayba real life saver
We are using our nest thermostat at a cabin an hour away from our home. We want to turn up from home and have it warm when we get there. It will not turn off eco from home and heat up. It works fine when we do it manually at the cabin. Is it something in my app? so frustrated!!
That's nice info & great review.👍👏
But can it give the wrong temperature reading like the previous version!
Good review. I had a nest 1st gen, then we moved into a new house that came with a fancy Lennox tablet with WAY more useful settings for the furnace so unfortunately not using nest. These are the things my Lennox thermostat can do that I wish Nest would integrate;
Half degree temp setting.
One Black, one stainless. lol
Great video. Does the Nest have a threshold setting so VRBO renters can't jack it down or up past a certain temperature. Thanks
Can you adjust the brightness on it???
i like how you show the phone screen on the phone ( without showing your hands)
great video by the way. thank you for that.
what if i have Y1 & Y2. where do i connect the Y2 to if there's only one Y spot on the thermostat?
The Star * or OB connection.
I'm having issues with the thermostat reconnecting to my home network. I've reset the router and the thermostat
How do you set the Dead Band difference between the heat and cool modes. Can You set the Nest to Heat and cool modes by time of day?
Great review.... One question.... Can I turn off the system remotely?
Thank You...
Yes
Thoughts?
Hey great video
I have an elderly person in my home with alzheimers.
How do u reset it if your power or internet goes out will it just come back on when the internet comes back or to u haft to pull it off and scan the QR code again to reset it and if so do u haft to shut the power off so u don't get shocked when u unplug it?
great video as always. just wondering why you still add cwire Even though it says it doesn't need one. if I don't have cwire will that work properly?
It will still work. I did because I really like the motion sensing feature and it wouldn't be enabled without the C Wire. It will working, adding the C Wire just providers more consistent power.
@@TechWithBrett I agree. I just installed this thermostat at pulled a new thermostat cable to add the C wire. The motion sensor is my favorite feature so far.
Is this for sale already? Can't find it anywhere in Europe.
