@@Nmille98 nah I'm pretty sure that's a simile. Similes are directly comparative, metaphors say that a thing is something else to give an implied comparison. Since this statement compared the barrenness to a nun's porn collection, it's a simile. If he'd said that it WAS a nun's porn collection (thereby implying that it's non existent), that would have been a metaphor. Some of the houses you could enter on Highway 17 had great atmosphere. Something about the way the houses were out in the middle of nowhere, slightly dilapidated, and probably only had a couple people living in them really made you feel what the citizens of this new world felt. One of the houses (the one with the burning corpses outside) gave me really ominous vibes. The way there is barely anything in the house in the way of food, the fact that there is nothing in the way of entertainment for those living there. It really felt bleak and hopeless, and set the tone for the game spectacularly.
Oh wow. Okay, I'm gonna have to watch this over multiple viewings due to its length, but I just wanted to voice my support, 10 minutes in. This is seriously impressive.
One note about freeman’s backstory, You could be a wonderfully decorated engineer and still be reduced to wearing a suit and pushing carts. The ivory tower of academia will reduced those without proper experience in the field to grunts, especially if the project is as ground breaking as what Gordon was working on. Ask your scientist friend. They’ll tell you all about it.
I mean, no? Such jobs are typically given to lab techs and some professors undergrad students. Their qualifications are much different from those of engineers. And 'academics in ivory towers hating engineers' is a tired trope at this point, since most academics are actively teaching engineers alongside their core subjects and often have to work with them in industrial sectors. I haven't met a scientist who is so openly dismissive towards engineers since they have to rely on them for helping them out in projects/writing papers. At the most, I have seen some of them consider engineering and non theoretical fields to be a poor choice for whom they consider intelligent.
@@ronbali3429 Forgive me, I know only a few engineers and they all work in the field. I imagine it could be different from science to science. What I do know is a plethora of life-scientists. Her direct only has her masters and works in the indoor lab, but since she already spent her 5-odd years as a field grunt, hunting down samples 4 hours a day.
I can confirm, did a Diamond Cubic Crystal BvK model fit and what I did was not the theory but instead the coding with next to no background knowledge on BvK while minimal at best knowledge on phonon dispersion.
@@ronbali3429I see it like astronauts. Astronauts aren’t at the top of the ladder it when to comes to space traversal. They don’t design he rockets or perform the equations needed to make it all possible. Yet they’re still very very educated and are expected to do the grunt work and out their neck on the line. There are tasks that require very educated people to do very risky things. And so that’s what Gordon is. He’s very educated and needs to be on site to manage this project. It can’t be handed off to an assistant or student or anyone else. They need a top mind in the room at the moment, in case anything goes wrong.
I mean if not for lag messing with my ability to time airblasts... I run the gambit from 50ms-350ms ping(airblast isn't lag compensated). Then factor in the different rocket launchers differing projectile speeds too?

if you play pyro as support, airblast is the most valuable thing, reflecting rockets, grenades from demo, and even spies or ubered enemies, putting out teammates on fire etc
TF2 is one of the most tightly knit communities there is. Everyone knows all the content creators, we all know the reccurring jokes about lack of support and random crits, and we are all aware of the very small but surving esports scene. TF2 is a game that is hard to describe from an outsiders perspective. A solid 200 hours might be a lot in other games, but TF2 its considered nothing, most veterans average 4000. There's a lot to learn. One of its biggest problems is wasted potential. TF2 is the goldilocks of esports. Recognisable characters, beautiful design and artstyle, mechanics with incredible skill ceilings, easy to understand the basics, and high acessibillity. But, Valve left it to rot. It has a team of 4 programmers. They went to CSGO and Dota, leaving TF2 with bi-annual updates, and a neglected esports scene and community. But thats just my ramblings. Its very interesting to see the perspective of a new player. For example, the backburner may be powerful at lower levels, its detremental as the airblast is it most powerful tool, often neglected. It can reflect projectiles and push players away, essential in pyro v soldier matchups, and only being able to do 4 of them hits . you hard. It all changes with skill. Also, no-one uses crafting. There's other things, but this comment is getting too long.
Might be a little late but yeah I completly agree with this comment, the tf2 community is tightly knit as well which is the thing keeping it alive. I'm hoping to get back into it again and try the community updates
After 2500hrs in this game and 4 seasons of competitive, tf2 is still my favorite game. I have so many memories and friends in this game. Tf2 is a masterpiece abandoned by its creators with a loving and dedicated community.
@In K no, in some interviews they have said they're already working on other games, and we don't know anything about the plot yet for HLA. Theres speculation that it could tie into the 3rd game (by time travel) because there's audio files for 2 different Alyx's, and even then, the fact that it's vr doesn't detract from the fact that it *is* a new game from valve. I'd rather have something than nothing
When you remember the sound design, sound of the guns, voice lines of the enemies and NPCs, and music. not just the song but you remember the exact moment in gameplay where the music kicked in - as much as you remember the plot and gameplay highlights, you've got one hell of an employee working on audio
It's so incredibly surreal that I used to (sort of) know you back in the day when we were both doing Let's Plays and trying to one-up Gamespot and IGN with our heavily edited game reviews. Very cool to see you're still going strong a whopping seven years later with great video-game related content.
Eli's death got me. Like a true father he was more worried about his child watching a traumatic event than his own death and calmly told her to "Close your eyes honey..."
When I see and hear that scene from HL2EP2 it always affects me the same way and I have to remind myself that they are 'fictional' characters. (Then I make my fingers pretend to walk like Ben Affleck explaining to Jay and Silent Bob that they are getting worked up over fictional characters). I get pretty angry at Valve for leaving us there and that's it. I have listened to Merle Dandridge discuss voicing Alyx and she says it is her favorite role. The sound of her crying for her murdered father seems so real not like acting and I would bet that she was truly affected by that scene as well and it is there in her anguish. Fictional characters DAMN!

The Antlion defense part in Episode 2 always gives me goosebumps once Vortal Combat kicks in. It's the kind of song that just makes you want to get right up in the action and blow up some fucking bugs.
I disagree. It absolutely shreds everything if you use it right and as long as you aren't spamming airblasts or trying to play a support role (which the weapon is obviously not meant for) it's downside literally doesn't matter.
@@Laroac What did they do it? I've playing TF2 on and off for the past few years and never noticed any major changes in its effectiveness. If anything shouldn't it be a lot stronger now since they buffed pyro's damage?
@@remembertotakeshowerspleas355 Its airblast cost is the problem, it's understandable that you don't know the reason why most prefer stock compared to back burner from playing tf2 on and off. The one big problem from that drawback is its flexibility, the back burner is good for flanking and... that's it, you certainly cannot 1v1 soldier, heavy, and demoman with it face-to-face because of that airblast cost. Airblast is one of the reasons why pyro could even directly confront these classes especially when encountering them in choke points, it could reflect rockets, arrows, pills, and stickies while also pushing back enemies to have a momentary breathing space that could be important in a short-term such as quick escape or finding cover. Sacrificing so much for one niche that the stock itself could already do consistently isn't a good strategy, with the players now, 9/10 times enemies could predict your strategy and severely punish you for that.
@@remembertotakeshowerspleas355 I've got 10+ years and 4000+ hours in TF2, you're completely wrong and Rycore is completely right. Skilled players don't even touch the backburner, it's a gun for noobs. It's fun in pubs for tormenting bad players, but it's garbage against anyone that doesn't just W+M1 their way through the game. About 75% of the time, stock is better than the sidegrades.
The Orange box single handedly got me into REAL PC gaming in 2008. Was only $20 and got me (reluctantly!) invested in steam to this day. It still stands as the greatest game bundle of all time.
The snow setting that was planned for Half life episode 3 sounded so cool. Not to mention finally being able to see the Borealis. The Episode 4 return to ravenholm made by Arkane would have been epic also.
I picked up the Orange Box on a whim because it was so much cheaper than other games in my local game store. Holy shite was it the best €20 I've ever spent.
Well, I didn't say I got it on release day. I bought it two years after its release, so by that time the few copies they had left in the store were marked down in price.
I'm a TF2 player and I'm sad that Valve almost never updated it anymore. The amazing community is still carrying the game for a decade though so that's good
Trying to get the achievement in the climax of Episode 2 where you have to prevent any of the buildings from being destroyed, drove me absolutely furious.
One of the other points that tf2 has that you didn’t mention, which I don’t blame you for as you don’t have very much time in it, is the games skill cap. All the subtle game mechanics and class interactions add up to a near unlimited skill cap that no one has truly reached. As someone with 2300 hours, I’m still awful and play on the lowest competitive division

1:01:00 "What's more valuable, criticals hits or airblast ammo?" The answer is airblast ammo, every time. The Pyro lives and dies by his ability to airblast to negate projectiles and control enemy movement. Good players won't let you just burn them down with the flamethrower. If you're only using it once every few lives, you haven't learned how to use it yet. You should be airblast in almost every engagement.

Defronnie, you're playing with bad players. That's pretty common on the official matchmaking servers, but W+M1 is objectively a very weak playstyle that any experienced or just skilled player can easily destroy.
Defronnie you just went to either asia server. Apperently, unlike your american or european here, everyone is a tryhard, like everyone. I think its a bit judgement that you went of your way to say volvo love pyro to the max. AND: #3 You either deserved it for walking to the fire or get reflected when ya know, press s to back off or just shoot at a further distance. Dying to a f2p is not a valid excuse to say volvo did on purpose; the players should be the one to blame. 4# Or (oh shit), a bad player, even worse than #3.
The Orange Box... one of the best deals in gaming history, and also my first time getting into Valve's exceptional development prowess. It pulled me into the Half Life series (which sadly never received its full conclusion) stamped Portal onto the gaming scene and set up a fantastic multiplayer game that I'm still playing a decade later. Still remember playing all five games a ton on PS3, despite that version's problems. I wish Valve were still making games but nowadays it seems they're mostly kicking back and letting Steam do the work for them. Excellent analysis as always and a really neat way of examining Valve in one video rather than five. Will you look at Max Payne 3 next?
Possibly, I'm not sure how it would sit with the fanbase, but ports to Source 2 are still enticing, that is if Valve even wants to develop another game at this point.
The Orange Box: My first game that required excessive DRM. Spent all week complaining about how I needed an internet connection to play HL2 and Portal... then Spore happened. Never whined about Steam again!
So Half Life 2 may have helped kill Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, and Portal may have helped kill Half Life 2: Episode 3 and even Half Life 3 for that matter. This almost makes it seem like game development is a zero-sum game.
+DrIvanRadosivic Yes, they do. Gabe said recently that they're going to start shipping new games soon, and I hope they do. I just want them to take it seriously and release something people have asked for. Like say, I don't now... HALF LIFE 3 THE GAME THAT'S BEEN ASKED FOR FOR TEN $%^^&* YEARS!! A new IP, or Left 4 Dead 3 would work too, but HL3 should be their main priority.
One of my most remembered parts of hl2 ep2 is when you drive through a town and get trapped by two walls and get ambushed. And “your not supposed to be here” starts playing and I remember getting a grin on my face.
At the time the way half-life 2 handled level loading was quite revolutionary. Other FPS games back then had smaller levels. Half-life 2's ability to pause the game for a moment to load meant continuity of the level and the atmosphere. The entire game felt extremely cinematic. Other games often used a door with no windows, so often players would instinctively know that must be the end of the level. HL2 usually allowed the player to go back and forward and bring whatever they liked with them. Also if you died half-life 2 was extremely fast as it would only need to reset the environment, at a time when most other games had to completely reload all assets.
I can't believe I just watched this entire hour-long video. I wasn't expecting to cry at the end of this video, god damnit. You are such a great writer.

Mip Mup I don't think i'd say it's a cash grab, because I and many others believe the core design is very solid and entertaining. They're a business trying to make money like anyone else. I'd say that the monetization awful in its early stages and not consumer friendly, but that's something that could be easily tweaked. From what I understand they are implementing ranked matchmaking and in-game ways to earn cards right now. You're right though, EA is total garbo :D
I believe your look at Team Fortress 2 was somewhat unfocused to the point of this video - not because I disagree with the points you made, I mostly agree with what you have to say, very well worded by the way. But TF2 in the Orange Box is not the same TF2 we have today. Depending on which console you talk about the Orange Box on, TF2 varies the most since on every version of the Orange Box except for PC, TF2 is only the original release of the game from 2007 without any added content: all stock weapons, only about 6 maps, and no cosmetics/hats. I think it would've been worthwhile to talk more about this fact.
LuckyStrikeLT the point he is trying to make is that console tf2 *was* pc tf2 back when it was released. The game has evolved from its original position in the orange box and its almost unrecognizable in comparison.
i feel like you don't understand that this video is meant to be a look at these games 10 years later, not about look at these games as they were 10 years ago.

First off, absoultely fantastic video! As a "tf2 veteran" with thousands of hours of the game this video really made me think about the game in a way I havent before. I've just never thought about half of the critisms in that way before. Also the backburner isn't a direct upgrade and airblasting is a super good tool for experienced players ;)
The backburner came out as a direct upgrade. It was slightly weaker when burning someone from the front, but way stronger when burning someone from the back.

And if you killed alyx you wouldn’t be able to hack stuff unless Gordon knew how to which is unlikely
They are working on some vr games but they don't seem to be interested in half life at the moment. Valve other than managing steam and it's big multiplayer games basically just let's the remainder of the staff work on what they're interested in. Currently if I remember correctly about 2/3 of staff is working on vr.
Half Life 3 will probably not come out for either a ludicrous amount of time or never as the people currently at valve are not interested, and if it does come out against all odds it won't live up to hype.
The TF2 part was a little underwhelming and not really a full picture of the masterpiece it is. I still feel you made one of the best reviews for Being a non-tf2 youtuber. Props to you great video
boi oof tf2 isn’t an FPS it’s a war themed hat simulator But really tf2 is an entirely unique entity so calling it just an FPS is not even a quarter of a story, it’s an amazing team based, class, multiplayer game that is so fun that the games community has pretty much reached cult status . The gameplay is the most fun I have ever had in an FPS and learning new ways to traverse the map or kill enemies is what makes me really enjoy tf2,I mean if it was the worst fps why is the game still alive even without an update for over 2 years? @@Nmille98 nah I'm pretty sure that's a simile. Similes are directly comparative, metaphors say that a thing is something else to give an implied comparison.
Since this statement compared the barrenness to a nun's porn collection, it's a simile. If he'd said that it WAS a nun's porn collection (thereby implying that it's non existent), that would have been a metaphor.
That metaphor didn't really work, tbh, but you get the idea, if it's comparing it to something else it's a simile. Than is also a comparative word, same as 'like' or 'as'

One note about freeman’s backstory,
You could be a wonderfully decorated engineer and still be reduced to wearing a suit and pushing carts.
I believe it must very lab to lab, because my ex roommate was a published biologist specializing in botany. She's a doctor now and still is forced to do field work.
They need a top mind in the room at the moment, in case anything goes wrong.

if you play pyro as support, airblast is the most valuable thing, reflecting rockets, grenades from demo, and even spies or ubered enemies, putting out teammates on fire etc
There's other things, but this comment is getting too long.
lol I only have 5 hours in TF2 so far, looks like I have a lot to go
Might be a little late but yeah I completly agree with this comment, the tf2 community is tightly knit as well which is the thing keeping it alive. I'm hoping to get back into it again and try the community updates
Hopefully, when Valve releases Alyx, some of the devs can move back to Tf2
After 2500hrs in this game and 4 seasons of competitive, tf2 is still my favorite game. I have so many memories and friends in this game. Tf2 is a masterpiece abandoned by its creators with a loving and dedicated community.
I’m F2P (so far), and crafting is a struggle. Random item drops don’t happen ‘every 30-70 minutes’ and you never have enough space.

The song inspires you to pick up your shotgun, SMG, and throw some mines at some bugs.
As an avid tf2 player I should probably tell you that the back burner is actually kind of shit for skilled players.
I disagree. It absolutely shreds everything if you use it right and as long as you aren't spamming airblasts or trying to play a support role (which the weapon is obviously not meant for) it's downside literally doesn't matter.
It used to be nuts, but was nerfed heavily in the last couple years.

One of the other points that tf2 has that you didn’t mention, which I don’t blame you for as you don’t have very much time in it, is the games skill cap. The answer is airblast ammo, every time.

#2 That all weapons on every class is has anti-pyro weapon.
AND:
#3 You either deserved it for walking to the fire or get reflected when ya know, press s to back off or just shoot at a further distance. Dying to a f2p is not a valid excuse to say volvo did on purpose; the players should be the one to blame.

+DrIvanRadosivic Yes, they do. Gabe said recently that they're going to start shipping new games soon, and I hope they do.
The biggest disappointment in the history of gaming is Valve stopping making games.
I'm not counting the dota card game.
You should! It is a game! Just because I've never played Half Life doesn't mean I'm going to discredit it as a game that valve has made.
@@FreshTillDeath56 its a shitty cashgrab, disguised as a videogame. just like most EA games these days.
@@FreshTillDeath56 imagine BMW stopped making cars and only produced the i3, no one cares about. Wouldn't you say that they aren't what the were before?
Mip Mup I don't think i'd say it's a cash grab, because I and many others believe the core design is very solid and entertaining. They're a business trying to make money like anyone else. I'd say that the monetization awful in its early stages and not consumer friendly, but that's something that could be easily tweaked. From what I understand they are implementing ranked matchmaking and in-game ways to earn cards right now.
You're right though, EA is total garbo :D
*a card game*
The orange box changed my life, love those games and everything based on source engine
Episode on valve.
Takes a long time.
Coincidence.
I think not!!!
Maybe it's because no one gives a damn about console TF2? TF2 on PC is and always was the main focus.
In other words it was a good game
24:17 This Line is actually in the base game, I got it to trigger during chapter 5 in HL2 just by walking up to Eli randomly, just thought you should know.
It wasn't quite the same. I think it was actually better in the shortened version that we got though.
41:22 Damn, how those cut dialogue of Eli had SO MUCH GRAVITY now that we have Half Life Alyx.
So that WAS you in HL2DM
Noctane But who could the one other player player be?
considering only like 12 people play hl2dm, im not surprised
and im 11 of them
Vitzel nah like 300
First off, absoultely fantastic video!
It was slightly weaker when burning someone from the front, but way stronger when burning someone from the back.
the end is so real that it hurts
im a valve diehard fan and they got me into gaming and stuff
im fucking miss old valve, despite all the love i still have for them
I freaked out when I heard the discord call. I thought someone was calling me
that discord call made me so annoyed and confused i was like "who the hell is calling me i just started really getting into this go away" then i paused the video searched discord and found nothing then i finally pushed play and was so glad i wouldnt have to stop the video for anyone
25:02
Oh dear, it's almost a feature-length film.
Time to grab the popcorn and get comfy.
54:16 this dude just missed 2 consecutive random crit rockets.
He's the kind of player who always gets random crits and then complains about the random crits killing him all the time
23:26 that would make some things impossible and would change the timeline, like how if you kill the scientist in the lambda labs straight up game ends you because you wouldn’t be able to go to xen. And if you killed alyx you wouldn’t be able to hack stuff unless Gordon knew how to which is unlikely
Valve will likely never come back. They are now Steam and some multiplayer games. They made some great games on the way though.
My theory is that they'll eventually release some sort of VR device and use Half-Life 3 as its flagship title to drive sales.
Citation needed.
"I don't hate them, I miss them." That's perfect, exactly how I feel about Valve's direction.
The TF2 part was a little underwhelming and not really a full picture of the masterpiece it is. I still feel you made one of the best reviews for Being a non-tf2 youtuber. Props to you great video
boi oof tf2 isn’t an FPS it’s a war themed hat simulator
But really tf2 is an entirely unique entity so calling it just an FPS is not even a quarter of a story, it’s an amazing team based, class, multiplayer game that is so fun that the games community has pretty much reached cult status . The gameplay is the most fun I have ever had in an FPS and learning new ways to traverse the map or kill enemies is what makes me really enjoy tf2,I mean if it was the worst fps why is the game still alive even without an update for over 2 years? But it’s your opinion so have fun I guess
boi oof
That’s...heavily debateable. And pretty much objectively wrong.
@boi oof is this a personal attack or sumthing?
@@peanutgallery5427 he probably just booted up the game, joined a game as sniper, and got his ass handed to him by a spy, pyro, or literally anybody else in the game.
@@robertryan8462 probs even an engi
I've finally finished the half life series on this recommendation, my God was episode two a thrill
I personally like the end of 2. I found it enthralling and a genuine challenge the first time.
