I was re-potting mine and one of the stalks sheared off (about 30cm tall). It looked so pretty that I couldn’t throw it away, so I literally shoved it upright into a small pot filled with soil. I thought it would die but it lived and lived. Didn’t even wilt or turn yellow! 4 months later I noticed roots around the pot. 6 months later a new stem burst through! So yep, it works. What an amazing plant and thanks for sharing. Yours is looking great!
OK, just a suggestion: you may want to look up what the word "zizi" means in French, just so the next time you talk about how nice your zz is or how big it is, etc., you may say that with a smile :)
What a magnificent plant! I actually cut two stalks off of mine in May… Dropped them in water, and literally within six weeks there were roots! I planted it in a pot, gave it to my daughter, and the plant is doing beautifully!
Love your videos! thanks for sharing so much knowledge! Question: My zz plant is getting to big. When I repot it, can I just pull apart some of the roots and stems?
It's still lovely...the stems have elongated, it's much bigger..it appears leaf drop occured..maybe?...i have a medium size zzplant so far it likes the sunny window and full drink of water once a wk or 10days or so and it has thicken up much fuller...thx for introducing me to this zz plant:).
Love the update... I started 2 stems in water 2 years ago after strong winds snapped them off.. they are doing great so far... I was considering placing them in a container but they seem to be happy where they are.. I call them 'the twins'.. Mother plant had to be divided so the smaller plant I call 'auntie'... ;)
Your ZZ plant looks very similar to a plant which is popular around Chinese New Year in Singapore. Most likely a luck/prosperity/fengshui thingie. I see them grown in big clay pots and the potting mix tends to be the local soil which looks like almost solid clay to me. I've never understood how this plant grows or its preferred culture, only the remnants of poor plants which struggled to make it through the festive period.
I got my ZZ plant off of ebay and I totally rooted it in water. It has turned out great. I clipped off two leaves from the cutting when I got it and one of the two leaves has survived but is growing soooooo slowly. I haven't had any issues with scaling yet. I've had it almost a year. I do mist is at least twice a week so maybe thats why? I have a lot of other plants that require misting so I just do all of them.
Scale is just an issue i have... they came in on other plants and now this poor plant has them... I hope you never see a scale insect. :) Have fun with your ZZ. and i hope the leaf cuttings kick it into high gear for you :)
Try separating ...easily get three or more plants, as you know too much moisture ..hurts ...grown them indoors in Toronto with stems over three ft. .. now, living in Barbados hot days cool evenings are ideal I have some over 4ft ... one opinion I'll share if a plant especially ZZ, likes it's spot leave it alone moving or taking it in and out side ... tramatiz a good thing ( you have a beautiful one) 😊
There is a type that stays more compact... this one is not that one... I still have a piece of this plant... I put it outside for the summer and the new growth is still that big.
I've had a ZZ plant for about three years now. I've always watered it the same. I used to have it in in a non-draining pot so I would just watch the water to make sure I wasn't giving it too much. It did fine for a long time. The pot was getting too small and the plant stopped getting new growths. The existing stems were fine, it just wasn't growing anymore and it was getting too top heavy. I re-potted it in a bigger pot that also drains. It didn't get any new growth but stayed healthy. Recently though, the stems have started to wrinkle. The leaves aren't dying off, but the stems were actually shriveling. I took a look at the roots and they were as dry as can be, even though I watered it a few days ago. The soil was also bone dry. So I have repotted it in new soil. It seemed like the plant wasn't able to absorb any water. But I always thought ZZ plants lose their leaves before actually dying. But it wasn't losing leaves. Have you ever heard of ZZ plant stems wrinkling from lack of water?
Have an awesome little video to show you! where can I send it?! you inspired me to get some cutting from my gigantic ZZ and after only 2 months I got amazing roots systems coming from these leafs! :) May be it helps that I live in Queensland Australia but it's awesome. Thank you!
True! gives roots in water just wait for a while does not need fertilizing does not need a lot of light ( just a little) water only when soil is dry very seldom spray to remove dust and let it dry fast POT! I have several of them. Because they are tall I use deep pots and put some heavy stones on the bottom. thank you, always a pleasure to watch your so thoughtful video!
Nice seasonal intro shot. I've been wondering why you have a scale problem. I guess you don't want to circumvent the no systemic ordinance on the hush hush. ;-/. I bet if you mix some alcohol with a spray insecticide and spray 3 times at 10 day intervals you could eliminate the scale altogether. The alcohol destroys their waxy shell so the insecticide can penetrate the body and kill them. The repeat spraying kills the emerging babies. It would be easier to do this during warm weather so you can take the plants outside to do this messy job. I've been wanting to get a ZZ plant. I didn't know they grew so readily from cuttings. I'll have to beg one from a friend.
Try a raw garlic clove....slash it slightly with a knife then bury slightly next to the stem of the plant. The plant will absorb the garlic. The fragrance will repeal maybe all kinds bugs, kills molds and keeps the plant healthy. It is used mostly for rose bushes. I bet it will work... Please let me know the results whoever tries this....
I planted 7 or 8 leaves about 3 years ago. After 2years, shoots began to grow ... 2 leaves per shoot .. but no growth since. I repotted the plants some time ago and nothing changed until this past month two new shoots have appeared, but the original plants have not grown. They are healthy but not growing bigger. What to do?
Ducktape ParaCentral There is a Ludisia discolor update coming very soon.. it's in spike right now. The spiderman is still alive.. it seems to be a little more delicate than the discolor.
Hey I just purchased a zz plant an I noticed potatoes like roots in the soil next to the plants is that normal? And do I leave it there when I repot it?
Thanks... perhaps i will use it a little more.. I made that intro a year or 2 ago in a video editing program.. I was just playing and seeing what different functions it did..

Awesome!!!
Help!!!!!! REPOT ME NOW!!!!!
That is a pretty plant. It is tall enough where you can place it on the floor (in a corner near window). And, yes, soon you'll need a more larger pot.
OK, just a suggestion: you may want to look up what the word "zizi" means in French, just so the next time you talk about how nice your zz is or how big it is, etc., you may say that with a smile :)
+Balataraz Balatarin lol... a Willy plant... lol
Hahaha should be peepee plant lols
Is this why they broken up the dino bones to use as the jesters shoe with the skinny leg? 😂

That's great that the "cuttings" are doing well :) I love that you named the plants :)

did you ever divide your ZZ plant? I'd love to see that video and to know about pruning and repotting. Thanks :)
me too! my zz plant is ready for dividing and i dont know what to do with it! hopefully that video is coming!

My zz plant leaves are turning yellow but the soil is almost dry any tips on what’s going
I thought when they were "leggy" like that it meant that it would really prefer more light than what it is getting.

klb084 I have not seen mine wrinkle badly but I have seen them get a few lines that go away when I water.
Please post you splitting that plant I have a huge’’ one and I need help! Thank you for this!!

Mine is in a purple pot too. I have browning or yellowing tips. Should I cut them off and put them in the soil?
definitely able to root in water. 6 branches 5 with roots after 2 months
Do I have to air dry the cuttings 1st before i put it in water?
I even had succes rooting some short stem cuttings that were rotting in the pot. Just put them in water and it took about a month to root
How did you divide the new plant coming in?
i just went to look for scales on my zz plant and i saw them. They burn holes in the leaves. Thank You.
True!
gives roots in water
just wait for a while
does not need fertilizing
does not need a lot of light
( just a little)
water only when soil is dry
very seldom spray to remove dust and let it dry fast
POT!
I have several of them.
Because they are tall
I use deep pots and put some heavy stones on the bottom.
thank you, always a pleasure to watch your so thoughtful video!
Sounds like you've been growing these for a while :)

***** I am working on the alcohol thing... I just need to set aside some time to make it a regular thing on a schedule... I'm lacking the schedule.
Yes, it's quite a time commitment. I always have to force myself to spray because it's my least favorite gardening job.
what fertilizer did you use for zamioculca?
Stem cutting works, but not sure it is too much faster.
Took over a year to see bulbs.
Worth doing though!
+Christopher Joseph it's true... all around these plants are slow.... but worth the wait
Yeah thanks guys
Have you made a video about dividing the ZZ? Mine is in desperate need and I have no idea how to do it! Thanks for all of your info!!
+Beth Kearns I haven't done that yet... I've been procrastinating for too long. my plant is suffering at the moment... I should divide it soon
Nice video but you talk too much!
Hey can you please do a update
how long did you get that plant to be that tall?
I didn't believe that was a 12 inch pot until you got next to the plant I have one in a 4 in pot.
I know Right! The pot looks small
Try a raw garlic clove....slash it slightly with a knife then bury slightly next to the stem of the plant. The plant will absorb the garlic. Later crawl from the scorpion double? Little and large? Lol
I had some cuttings that I potted up. The plant attracts ants and I had to get rid of it. Yes they root in water - that's how I got my cuttings.
You should have tried natural repellents like raw garlic slightly buried to the plant. Or ant repellants from Lowes.
I think you over-watered and ants were attracted to rotting roots.
Ants where all over it lol
Beautiful plant! Adorable man.
I discovered the bullshit particle 😭
You have such a positive attitude 😉

I have the same problem. I like some answers too. Mine was a stem cutting. In good light not direct sun but it is not growing. What to do?
My zz plant looks SICK....

Ducktape ParaCentral There is a Ludisia discolor update coming very soon.. it's in spike right now. The spiderman is still alive.. it seems to be a little more delicate than the discolor.
That's some major tropism.
did you ever get flowers in the bottom?
I have been shopping for months trying to find a zz plant with 0 luck. I have no idea where to look?
... I always see this plant at Lowe's that I decided a week ago to buy it. I found a small pot and transplant it to a way larger porcelain pot.
Is this from the small leafs? :D
U r so warm n gentle !!! ☺️☺️
Hey I just purchased a zz plant an I noticed potatoes like roots in the soil next to the plants is that normal? And do I leave it there when I repot it?
